“Fresh Prince’s” ‘Aunt Viv #2’ Now Has A New Career That’s Totally Different From Acting

Posted On : February 4, 2018

Remember when “Aunt Viv” mysteriously swapped identities on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air back in the day? Within the blink of an eye, “Aunt Viv” transitioned from the beautiful mocha complexioned Janet Hubert, to the beautiful caramel Daphne Mawell Reid.

At that time, there was no explanation given as to why the sudden change in “Vivians” were made. The only acknowledgement the show, was when Will walked into the kitchen during Daphne’s first episode and told “Aunt Viv,” “You look different.” It was hilarious and left fans wondering ‘Where’d Aunt Viv go?’ But we all eventually became accustomed to seeing “Aunt Viv’ #2” on the show and kept it moving.

Ever since Fresh Prince, Reid had several more roles in various shows, but nothing as impactful as her time on Fresh Prince. That led us, once again, to wonder ‘Where’d Aunt Viv go?’

Daphne Maxwell Reid’s New Careers

Always amazing to spend an afternoon with my Fresh Prince family. Wishing that James Avery was still with us to make this complete.

So we did a lil’ diggin’ and here’s what we’ve found out. Although to this day, the now 69 year old actress isn’t officially retired from the acting game, she has chosen to enter a different career. Daphne is now in the fashion industry, designing custom made jackets, which debuted during New York Fashion Week in 2017. Here’s what she stated about adding a new career title to her name in her late sixties:

Daphne Reid: 2016 brought the start of a new creative venture for me. I am offering an opportunity for a select few to obtain one of my Custom Made Wearable Art creations called DAPHNE STYLE. I have made these Chinese inspired silk brocade coats for myself for many years and have had the opportunity to wear them as the host of “Virginia Currents” weekly show on WCVE, PBS. After many requests, I decided to share my collection.

In addition to her Daphne Style fashions, Mrs. Reid is also a photographic artist, with a business name that plays on her prior Fresh Prince days- Daphne Maxwell Reid’s Fresh Prints. Here’s what she said about that:

Daphne: The time has come for me to share my photographic eye with you. I hope to awaken your childhood sense of wonder and curiosity with “Daphne Maxwell Reid’s Fresh Prints®” a collection of signed DIGITAL PRINTS, NOTE CARDS, and four BOOKS that share with you the stories of the journeys that have taken me around the world, as well a one book of memories in the form of a cookbook.

And there ya’ have it ILOSM fam.’ Much respect for Aunt Viv’ #2 a.k.a. Daphne Maxwell Reid, for being a great example that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
