Redd Foxx’s mom told Jet Magazine in 1980 that the side of Foxx that the world didn’t know was the extremely kind hearted, very giving side of him. She also said that he was a christian who once told her when he was a young kid, that he was going to “preach.” Redd eventually jokingly responded to his Mom’s statement and said: “I’m already preaching. I deliver sermons in my night clubs and I do a lot of preaching on my TV show [Sanford and Son].” I don’t think that was actually the type of “preaching” his mom was referring too though…LOL.

One other thing his mom revealed was that Foxx never wanted her to attend his shows because of all of the foul language he used and she said “he doesn’t cuss before me or swear.”, So one time she sneaked into one of his nightclub performances at the Sutherland Hotel in Chicago and this is what his mother said happened after the emcee introduced Foxx:

“I got under the table. He said I know you’re here and you’ll have to get out.” She didn’t and he didn’t tell any “blue ones.” she chuckled. She referred to his dirty jokes as the “blue ones.” After that performance she never bothered to attend his nightclub shows ever again, but she always showed of with bus loads of folks to his Sanford and Son tapings. Redd Foxx was a true ‘Mama’s boy’ and there’s nothing wrong with that.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
