When legendary director, John Singleton, passed away on April 29, 2019, following a massive stroke the week prior, countless celebrities paid homage to him and his legacy. One such celeb’ stands out though — his ex-wife.

John only married once in his 51 years and that was to The Color Purple actress, Akosua Busia, who played “Celie’s” sister, “Nettie,” in the 1985 classic. Though their marriage was brief (1996- 1997), they created a beautiful life…their now 25-year-old daughter, Hadar Busia-Singleton.

One day after their daughter paid homage to her Father, Akosua has now spoken out about her ex-husband as well. What the Ghanian actress revealed about their last moments with John, was as equally beautiful as it was heartbreaking.

Akosua also gave insight into the marital union she and John Singleton once shared.

Here’s What Akosua Busia Revealed About Singleton’s Last Words To Her

In an emotional online post, Akosua shared several photos to go along with her touching homage.

Akosua first explained how John Singleton’s peaceful demeanor during their marriage never wavered throughout his life, nor in death, as she and their daughter (recent photo of Hadar pictured below) said their final goodbyes to him in Cedars Sinai Hospital:

Akosia Busia- “John…once was a husband; through trials of life you never raised your voice at me, nor I to you. That peace and warmth was there when Hadar and I held your hand once more before your body left.”

John’s Final Words To Ex-Wife, Akosua, Was About Their Daughter

John was definitely a family man, who maintained a close relationship with all of his children. But Akosua never expected her last conversation with John — about their daughter, Hadar — would be their last:

“On April 3rd when I sent you Hadar’s birthday photo and you wrote “Awwwww ‘so beautiful’ she’s on her way…” I never dreamed those would be your final words to me. Yes, our “baby” is on her way. You too… on your glorious journey ~ .” – Akosua Busia

Not one to typically speak publicly about her ex-husband, Akosua Busia’s beautiful homage to John sums up the love and respect she has for the man she once called ‘husband.’

May John Singleton continue to rest in peace and power, as his impactful legacy continues to live on.

The adorable little girl in the above photo has touched the hearts of millions, with her performance in one of the most iconic Black films of all time. She’s also African royalty…literally! Her father, Dr. Kofi Abrefa Busia, was a  royal prince, who later became the Prime Minister (the President) of Ghana, making Akosua and her sister the ‘first kids’ to the First Family of Ghana from 1969 to 1972. “Nettie” and the late John Singleton — who first blasted onto the Hollywood scene with his 1991 classic, Boyz ‘N The Hood”– dated for quite a while, ultimately getting married in October 1996. The then 30-year old Ghanian, West African born, Akosua, and then 28-year old California native, John, seemed like the perfect couple. But unfortunately, just a year after marriage, they divorced.

The beautiful blessing that transpired during their union, was that their now-25-year-old daughter, Hadar Busia-Singleton, was born (April 1997).

In 2016, the two former lovebirds happily reunited to watch their daughter make history for her college graduation. In her video caption, Akosua explained exactly how Hadar set a new precedent that she and John were beyond proud of:

Akosua wrote, “Graduation Day! Our beloved daughter, Hadar Busia-Singleton, becomes the first ever Ghanaian to graduate from Interlochen Arts Academy, the Number One Performing arts school in America!!! Hallelujah! Amen! @hadsy #graduation”

As y’all know, John Singleton sadly passed away on April 29, 2019, from complications following a massive stroke the week prior. However, his incredible legacy will continue to live on.

(L) Actor, Ernest Harden Jr.; (R) Stevie Wonder

True Old Schoolers remember actor, Ernest Harden Jr.,from his roles in various sitcoms and films back in the day, including “The Jeffersons,” the film “White Men Can’t Jump,” and many more. One of his most memorable roles was his guest appearance on “Good Times,” as J.J.’s art student, “Earl.” Remember that? That was the episode where “J.J.” decided to give art classes in their home in order to raise some extra money and “Earl’s” dad threatened to beat “Earl” to an oblivion for attending the classes.

Well, fast forward to decades later, and Ernest Harden Jr. dropped a bombshell revelation about his friends, Stevie Wonder and actress, Akosua Busia,  that most of us would not have expected.

The Details Revealed…

For decades, Stevie Wonder has kept this tidbit of info on the low, even though signs were there all along. But y’all know we’re truth gold diggers at ILOSM — always diggin’ for truth — and oh the things we learn around here when we do a lil’ diggin.’

In an interview with Actors Entertainment (see video below, starts at 5:03 mark), Ernest revealed that his good friend/actress, Akosua Busia a.k.a. “Nettie” from “The Color Purple,” was in a serious relationship with Stevie Wonder back in the day. In fact, Ernest — a Detroit, MI native — says that’s how he became good friends with fellow Detroit native, Stevie.

They eventually became so cool, that Stevie would call him at 3 a.m.. sometimes. Why? Because Ernest explained that because Stevie is blind, he doesn’t necessarily have a concept of night and day, so whenever he’s up, he simply calls friends, or do what one may do at 12 noon, even if it’s the wee hours of the morning. Back to this whole “Nettie- Stevie coupled up thing though…

Now, remember we said the signs were there all along? Well, we’ve seen Stevie and Akosua out at red carpet events together, but the vibe they’d always given off was one of mentor and mentee. Matter of fact, as we previously reported, Stevie is the godparent of Akosua’s and the late director, John Singleton’s, now-24-year-old daughter, Hadar Busia-Singleton.

In addition to Stevie and Akosua frontin’ for the cameras back in the day (I joke…I joke, I kid I kid…but it’s still true), Stevie is still very close to the “Color Purple” star and Hadar. As we also reported, Akosua co-wrote the song, “Moon Blue,” with Stevie Wonder, for his album, “A Time 2 Love.”

Akosua also oftentimes pays homage to the music genius as the “god-daddy’ of her beautiful daughter. For example, for Stevie’s 70th birthday, Akosua paid tribute with the following photo and caption:

Stevie Wonder with actress, Akosua Busia (via Akosua Busia’s IG)

Happy 70th Birthday Stevland. Thank you for being such a loyal and faithful friend throughout the years. Thank you for being such a dedicated and loving God-daddy to my daughter,[Hadar]. Thank you for being such a gift. May God give you many more years in which to bless the world with your presence. Thank you #StevieWonder #music #legend #genius #humanitarian

In recent years, Stevie was visiting the mommy-daughter duo and took a moment to vibe with them, while singing and playing the piano, as seen in the post below…

Abena Busia: I had the privilege of moderating this distinguished panel of speakers at the UN… We thank the UN for holding this remembrance every year.

If their parents were alive today, pretty sure they would be BEYOND proud of the life accomplishments their children have made. Thanks to Akosua, Abena, and their parents for inspiring so many who will come after them.

Not sure if John Singleton ever knew his ex-wife, Akosua, and his daughter’s godparent had a thing going on back in the day. However, if he didn’t know then, he sure does now because Ernest Harden Jr. has officially let that cat outta the bag.

What Ernest Harden Jr. Does Now

Today, at 65 years young, Ernest is healthy and living life to the fullest. He has two adult children- a son and a daughter. He’s also still getting his acting on. A few years back, he starred in a one-man stage play titled, “Beethoven and The Misfortune Cookies,” which told an interesting true story of Beethoven through the eyes of the Black man that he actually was- unbeknownst to American history. Currently, Ernest Harden Jr. can be seen on TruTV’s “Laff Mobb’s Laff Tracks,” a half-hour comedy series, hosted by popular hip hop DJ/radio personality, Cipha Sounds.
