It’s our girl, the beloved Phyllis Hyman! Phyllis had one of the most beautiful alto/contralto voices in R&B and the music industry could certainly use a singer of her caliber right now.

Did you get this right, or no?

Phyllis had some classic jams like “Living All Alone,” Don’t Wanna Change The World,” “Living in Confusion,” and she and Norman Connor’s remake of The Stylistics’ “Betcha Bye Golly Wow.”

As you may know, Ms. Hyman suffered from bipolar disorder and sadly after the pain of her long battle against depression became to much for her to bear, she committed suicide by overdosing on pentobarbital and secobarbital in the bedroom of her New York City apartment at 211 West 56th Street. She was found unconscious at 2pm, hours before she was scheduled to perform at the Apollo Theater, and she passed away three hours later at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital. Part of her suicide note read:

“I’m tired. I’m tired. Those of you that I love know who you are. May God bless you.”

Phyllis’ music will continue to live on and she is sorely missed by many.

Here are a few Old School fun facts about Phyllis that you may not know…
