We’re sad to report that Nikolas “Niko” McKnight, the eldest son of R&B singer Brian McKnight, has passed away at just 32 years old after a two-year battle with cancer. The tragic news was shared by Niko’s uncle, Claude McKnight—former member of the legendary gospel group Take 6—who paid tribute to his nephew in an emotional TikTok video posted on May 29, 2025.

Claude remembered Niko as “quirky and curious and ridiculously talented,” reflecting on his musical gift, photographic eye, and creative spirit. For those who followed Niko over the years, many knew him as a singer, guitarist, and artist in his own right—trying to carve out his space while standing in the shadow of a famous father.

But Niko’s life was not without pain—and not just the physical toll from cancer. For years, he and his father, Brian McKnight, had a deeply fractured relationship. That estrangement became headline news in 2023 and 2024 when Brian publicly distanced himself from his older children, including Niko. In an Instagram post that sent shockwaves across social media, Brian said that his estranged children were “products of sin” and that he had to detach from “negativity” to live a life he loves.
Niko didn’t let those comments slide. In multiple public responses, including an emotional post shared by his brother, Brian McKnight Jr., Niko stood up for himself and his siblings, saying they had all loved and supported their father for years—until he turned his back on them. Their mother, Julie McKnight (Brian’s ex-wife), also called out Brian for what she said were “falsehoods,” especially after Brian claimed in April 2024 that Julie had blocked him from helping Niko during his cancer treatment. Julie denied that claim completely.

In January 2024, Niko went public with his cancer diagnosis. Though he never disclosed the exact type of cancer he was battling, his updates showed he was fighting with grace, faith, and a touch of humor. Throughout his journey, Niko kept a presence online, sharing music, thoughts, and a glimpse into his life—even when things got rough.
Sadly, the rift between Niko and Brian McKnight never seemed to heal before Niko’s passing. As of now, Brian has not made a public statement about his son’s death.
Niko is survived by his mother, Julie, his brother Brian Jr., and other family members who remained close during his fight. Fans and followers continue to flood social media with love, condolences, and outrage—mourning not just the loss of a young life, but the heartbreaking silence from the man who helped bring him into this world.
We’ll continue to follow any updates, but for now, we send love, and uplifting energy to Niko’s loved ones. Rest in power, young king.
