The officer Hithon ran into is David Cajuso who has been on the Miami Beach police force since 2015. He suffered a head injury and reportedly lost consciousness after Hithon struck him. Cajuso is expected to recover, but witnesses say that the damage Hithon inflicted could have been a lot worse.

“The car was coming westbound from Ocean on 12th and went through the red light, struck an occupied car on 12th and Collins,” Miami Beach Police Chief Dan Oates told the press. “At some point, the driver made a decision to speed away and she continued west on 12th Street… Why the BMW was travelling at some rate of speed through a red light, we don’t have an answer to that question right now.”

Why Did She Do It?

Ryan Jerrell Lucas of Maryland, 22, was in the car with Hithon when she struck the officer. Investigators have spoken to him in hopes of finding out why Hithon was driving so wrecklessly. Lucas has also spoken to Cary Hithon, Cariann’s father, but the details of those conversations have not yet been released.

There is much speculation that Cariann had been drinking heavily. In the video of the final accident, witnesses can be heard saying that she was drunk and had a crazed look in her eyes. Heartbroken by the news, Cary can’t understand why his daughter was acting so “out of character.” He reflected on a conversation they had recently where they discussed responsibility and giving back to her people through her work as an attorney.

“You can’t help but have a little bit of despair and anguish behind something like this because you don’t understand how it could happen,” Cary said to WFOR-TV.

Did Cariann Have To Die?

Those who knew Cariann Hithon saw great things for her in the future. She was a leader and mentor who studied political science at Temple University. Her father thought that she would make a huge impact on society. In spite of her erratic behavior that day, many wonder if she had to die. The officer who shot her aimed directly into her car as opposed to shooting out her tires. Whatever the reasons for this tragedy, Cariann will be greatly missed by many–including her alma mater.

“We await all the facts as this is still a breaking story, but our thoughts are with Cariann’s friends and family during this tremendously difficult time,” Temple spokeswoman Sarah Madaus said in a prepared statement. “We are so proud and grateful to have had her as a Temple Owl.”

Stop the Violence:

On Saturday, June 17, Stevie Wonder participated in the North Minneapolis Conference on Peace. The event was held to help put an end to gun violence among our youth. During the event, the legendary artist spoke to the young crowd with the hope of motivating them to put the weapons down. But, since Black Lives Matter is a very sensitive subject right now, Stevie’s delivery may have come off a bit brash for some.

“It is in your hands to stop all the killing and all the shooting wherever it might be, because you cannot say Black lives matter and then kill yourselves,” Stevie said.

Although Stevie probably meant to shed light on the issue of Black-on-Black crime in hopes of a positive outcome, many fans aren’t exactly pleased with his statement. In fact, many have dragged the Grammy Award-winning singer for allegedly failing to see all of the issues that contribute to the deaths of so many African Americans in the United States. Needless to say, some social media users have absolutely no filter so some of the comments are quite brash as a result.

After years of being silent about the many unwarranted murders of African Americans at the hands of police officers, NBA icon, Michael Jordan, has just stepped up and chosen his conscience over his profits, stating in his new open letter, that he “can no longer be silent” about these horrific murders.

When I heard about Jordan’s letter, my first thought was ‘Here we go again, another celeb following the trend of writing a letter for publicity, without any real intention of using their fame to make true change in our justice system’…

But midway through reading it, Jordan proved me wrong, because although he simply wrote a letter, he at least put his money where his mouth is and vowed to help put an end to unjust police brutality by donating $2MILLION of his own money to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and to the Institute for Community-Police Relations (they’ll get $1 million each). Both organizations work to improve police-community interactions and build trust.

That will be a process, but still a good start, because the sooner the trigger happy cops can take cues from the good cops and learn that Black people aren’t hunting animals, nor target practice, but are actually equal human beings who deserve to be respected as such…the closer they’ll be to lowering the countless blood count on their hands, and the safer African Americans will be when getting pulled over for a broken taillight and such, but I digress. Anyways, you can read Jordan’s full open letter below…

FROM MICHAEL JORDAN:

“As a proud American, a father who lost his own dad in a senseless act of violence, and a black man, I have been deeply troubled by the deaths of African-Americans at the hands of law enforcement and angered by the cowardly and hateful targeting and killing of police officers. I grieve with the families who have lost loved ones, as I know their pain all too well.”

“I was raised by parents who taught me to love and respect people regardless of their race or background, so I am saddened and frustrated by the divisive rhetoric and racial tensions that seem to be getting worse as of late. I know this country is better than that, and I can no longer stay silent. We need to find solutions that ensure people of color receive fair and equal treatment AND that police officers – who put their lives on the line every day to protect us all – are respected and supported.”

“Over the past three decades I have seen up close the dedication of the law enforcement officers who protect me and my family. I have the greatest respect for their sacrifice and service. I also recognize that for many people of color their experiences with law enforcement have been different than mine. I have decided to speak out in the hope that we can come together as Americans, and through peaceful dialogue and education, achieve constructive change.

“To support that effort, I am making contributions of $1 million each to two organizations, the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s newly established Institute for Community-Police Relations and the NAACP Legal Defense Fund. The Institute for Community-Police Relations’ policy and oversight work is focused on building trust and promoting best practices in community policing. My donation to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, the nation’s oldest civil rights law organization, will support its ongoing work in support of reforms that will build trust and respect between communities and law enforcement. Former Supremes singer, Mary Wilson, compared the differences between Blacks in the 60s and 70s vs. the current Black Lives Matter movement that’s aimed at stopping police from using Black people as target practice and killing them at will. Wilson explained to TMZ, that in the Motown era, African Americans were mostly conditioned to fear fighting for 100% equal rights, so unlike today, they only went so far:

“Back in the Motown days, we were not even citizens. It doesn’t even compare…except we didn’t have the violence. You know why? It was because we as Black people ‘knew our place.’ So it wasn’t until Martin Luther King, the civil rights movement and all that stuff…that things started changing and we started standing up for the rights. So it was a different platform. […] I think it gets bad before it gets better, and that may be where we are right now,”said Wilson.

Wilson’s right, times have changed. Back then, people took one of two sides- the peaceful, nonviolent approach of Dr. Martin Luther King; or the demanding, eye-for-an-eye approach of Malcolm X. Both were fighting for the same cause of equal rights for African Americans, but at that time, many feared that Malcolm’s approach was too direct, so they leaned more towards King’s instead.

Today, as millions protest the countless slaughterings of Black people at the hands of some police officers, it seems the two approaches have merged into one- King’s protest marches have fused with Malcolm’s action. Now, instead of African Americans “staying in our places,” many are fed up and are now demanding equal respect, not asking. Just like Mary Wilson said, we’re probably living in a time where in order to get change, things are going to probably get bad, before they get better.
