I Love Old School Music fam’…guess who’s back and giving us all ’90s vibes nostalgia? It’s the cast of “Martin”. After years of rumors, beef, and love lost, our favorite crew reunited for a hilarious spoof at the 2024 Emmys.

Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold, and Carl Anthony Payne II gathered on the iconic sitcom’s recreated set to present Jeremy Allen White with the Lead Actor award for “The Bear.” But that wasn’t all – they also took the opportunity to give the Emmys a little friendly shade for all the years of snubs they received back in the day.

With a photograph of the late Thomas Mikal Ford placed prominently on the table, they paid homage to their fallen cast member. It was a touching moment that reminded us of the love and camaraderie that made “Martin” so special.

And Carl Anthony Payne II fully embraced his “Cole” character, hilariously assuming they were there to snatch an Emmy, not present one.

Now, we all know that “Martin” has been a staple in the Black households long after it went off the air. But it was Tisha Campbell who dropped the mic when she exposed the fact that their beloved ’90s sitcom won an Emmy. The audience couldn’t help but show some love and appreciation for Tisha’s boldness. Do your thing Tisha!

Let’s take a moment to remember the good old days when “Martin” graced our screens from 1992 to 1996. This show was more than just a sitcom – it was a cultural phenomenon. And they had some killer guest stars too, like The Notorious B.I.G., Method Man, and even Tommy Hearns. Remember that episode with MC Hammer? Carl Was Almost “Theo”?!!
In an interview with Comedy Hype, Carl revealed he was THIS close to jackin’ the “Theo” role from Malcolm Jamal Warner. During the final round of auditions, several known actors were in the building. He says Sheryl Lee Ralph auditioned for the “Claire Huxtable” role and Jaleel White (“Urkel” from Family Matters) almost became “Rudy” (which was originally scripted for a boy). Carl says that he, Malcolm, and a dude with a Jheri curl named, ‘Sugar,’ were the final three up for the role of the “Huxtable’s” son, “Theo.”

You could be too dark skinned, you could be too light skinned, you could be [too] short, you could be [too] tall. … I just want you to know that it had nothing to do with your talent why you didn’t get this role. And I don’t want you to be swayed, or disappointed by that because you’re very talented. But I do want you to understand the business aspect of this.'”

I never saw any of those things [sex assault allegations] that they’ve talked about. So let’s just clear that up right now. I also don’t think that you can take away this man’s legacy in terms of what he did in the Black community and just in general for a generation. You can’t take it away. Whether he’s guilty or not? That’s between him and God, I don’t know.

But he wasn’t necessarily a nice man at times. Wasn’t a nice man, know what I mean?

Nonetheless he turned it into a positive. “I learned a lot,” Carl said of his bitter conflict with Bill Cosby. “And the thing about me is…I take everything and always turn it into something positive.” Well said.

Melika’s and Bobby’s Son [Carl’s Step-son] Spoke About Bobbi Kristina’s Boyfriend

After Bobbi Kristina passed away– and prior to her boyfriend, Nick Gordon’s, death — Landon expressed his hurt and anger in an interview with Vlad TV:

“Nick Gordon is a leach he is a tag-along, he is a weak individual that can’t do for himself. … They were just friends from school [and they only got into a relationship] after her Mother passes away, that’s a bit suspicious.”

As you all know, just five years after the passing of Bobby’s and Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in July 2015…Bobby also lost his son, Bobby Brown Jr. [from a previous relationship], to an accidental drug overdose on November 18, 2020. The N.E. legend has endured so much heartache throughout the years, but we applaud Bobby for still going strong for the sake of his other children and loved ones.

We’ve all heard rumors surrounding tension on the set of the Martin sitcom back in the day, but the rumors we mostly remember hearing were about how Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell couldn’t get along whatsoev.’ We never really heard that there was some major tension between actor, Carl Payne (“Cole) and Martin. So much so, that they were going at it on many occasions while on set, and Carl has now confirmed that.

In a prior interview with host, Jack Thriller, of ThisIs50.com, Carl let the cat outta the bag about what was really happening between them behind the scenes of the Martin sitcom. Read some of what he said below.

Carl Payne: “We Had A Lotta Tense Days On Set”

Carl said that at first he didn’t have a problem with Martin, but once Martin started doing some foul things to him, then he developed an issue with him and their tension lasted pretty much for the duration of the show.

“You know it’s no secret, we had a lotta tense days on the set…we had a LOT of tense days on the set. I live by a certain code of ethics, I from Harlem, you know how we do.”

Carl continued:

“Yeah we had issues, he [Martin Lawrence] had issues with himself really. I think he was battling his own demons, you know what I’m saying? I wish him nothing but the best, hopefully he’s better now, in a better place. I don’t think he was in a good place at that time and that’s pretty much it. It was a great place to work for a long time and then it became a not so great place to work. I keep it professional as long as I can, until you step over that line. You cross the line and you come at me in a way that I can’t sleep at night, or [if] I feel like you’re threatening me, then it’s a different story…period.

We were all like family…and sometimes families fight…families get down you know what I mean and I enjoyed myself to the fullest when we were doing it [filming the show], all of it.”

So, was Carl saying that Martin was threatening him? Wow, things got that heated?!!

The nail in the coffin was when the interviewer acknowledged that we’d all heard rumors about why the Martin show really went off the air, but that he also understood that we shouldn’t believe everything we here. Jack Thriller was alluding to the rumors about past tension between Martin and Tisha Campbell, as well as Martin’s alleged drug use at that time. Carl immediately responded by saying, “You should” believe the aforementioned rumors. In other words, they were apparently all facts.

Beef Squashed Decades Later, After Tommy’s Passing

Carl recently revealed that he and Martin had not spoken in many years, but in 2018 the passing of their dear friend/former Martin cast-mate, Tommy Ford, led to their cordial reunion at his funeral.

And there you have it people. Who would have ever thought “Cole” and “Martin” were beefin’ behind the scenes. Now that we know the real deal, we give them a big hand clap for doing a helluva job on the show and convincing us that they were cool as a fan. So glad they’ve finally let bygones be bygones.

Remember “Cole,” the not-so-bright best friend of “Martin” on the 90’s sitcom, Martin? He’s also known as “Cockroach” from The Cosby Show too. His Martin character was actually the dumbest dude ever…LOL, but he was FUNNY! On Martin, “Tommy” was the one who always had a “mysterious job” that nobody ever knew about, but in REAL LIFE, it actor, Carl Payne (“Cole”) was actually the one with the mysterious job that everyone eventually found out about, and the cool thing is that he was not trying to hide it. After the fame of Martin faded, Carl began to venture out and do things that he’d never done before. One of those things was working a regular 9 to 5 job for the very first time, to take care of his and we respect that wholeheartedly.

He said: “It started out as research for a role and then I kept doing it and I like it. I got a family man, you know and there’s no shame in taking care of your family.”

As you all know, just five years after the passing of Bobby’s and Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in July 2015…Bobby also lost his son, Bobby Brown Jr. [from a prior relationship], to an accidental drug overdose on November 18, 2020. The N.E. legend has endured so much heartache throughout the years, but we applaud Bobby for still going strong for the sake of his other children and loved ones.

Remember “Cole,” the not-so-bright best friend of “Martin” on the 90’s sitcom, Martin? He’s also known as “Cockroach” from The Cosby Show too. His Martin character was actually the dumbest dude ever…LOL, but he was FUNNY! On Martin, “Tommy” was the one who always had a “mysterious job” that nobody ever knew about, but in REAL LIFE, it actor, Carl Payne (“Cole”) was actually the one with the mysterious job that everyone eventually found out about, and the cool thing is that he was not trying to hide it.

After the fame of Martin faded, Carl began to venture out and do things that he’d never done before. One of those things was working a regular 9 to 5 job for the very first time, to take care of his and we respect that wholeheartedly.

From “Cole” To Car Salesman, Watch Video

FYI: Carl is no longer a car salesman, but back in 2011, he’d become one after his “Martin” sitcom fame. When video surfaced, of him as a Honda car salesman a while back, fans were surprised by the thought of “Cole” selling cars. Now that the initial shock of his reality is over, Carl Payne eventually spoke out about his time as a car salesman and why he did it.

He said: “It started out as research for a role and then I kept doing it and I like it. I got a family man, you know and there’s no shame in taking care of your family.”

Check out TMZ’s footage of Carl on his job at the car lot a few years ago. We don’t necessarily like the way TMZ presented their story and tried to almost poke fun at the man for earning an honest living. HOWEVER, the way Carl responded to them with class and dignity is applause worthy, so here it is…

We give Carl Payne a big hand clap for being such a humble brotha, as well as for man’ing up to do what he needed to do at that time to take care of himself and his family. There’s nothing wrong with being a car salesman and once you actually get past the fact that he was once a big time sitcom actor, you realize that he had a good job that a lot of people wouldn’t mind having right about now.

As far as the ongoing tension he had with Martin Lawrence, all we can say is WOW! They did a helluva job covering that up! Thankfully they’re in a better space now.

Carl Payne is now a producer and/or writer for several stage productions, internet shows, and TV shows. As mentioned earlier, he’s no longer working at the car dealership. Keep doing your thang Carl!
