In 1985 we got to witness Doug E. Fresh (52) and Slick Rick (54) made hip hop history when they spit the lyrics, “La-di-da-di, we like to party/We don’t cause trouble, we don’t bother nobody, we’re..Just some men that’s on the mic/ And when we rock up on the mic we rock the mic (Right).” Little did we know at that time, that we decades later, we’d be introduced to Doug E.’s six sons, who have grown up to witness first-hand, the impact he’s had on our lives. Now, Doug E. is letting them know just how impactful they were to his life and growth as a man as well.

Doug E. Fresh’s Message About Sons…

Doug E. Fresh- “When I think of Father’s Day, I always reflect on my role as a leader, teacher, protector, & provider for my 6 boys! I often wonder if I should’ve done less or more throughout my journey as a father,” wrote Doug E. Fresh. “Throughout my career, my greatest desire was that they saw me as the worlds greatest FATHER! I’ve come to realize that just as my father wasn’t perfect, neither am I , & neither will my sons be.”

He continued:

“Perfect is an unreasonable expectation for humans, but patience is a key component to never giving up as father, as a man! They’ve never been too far away throughout my entire career , & Im blessed to continue to have my sons & father by my side! To have a great support system & great moms to balance me as a parent 🙏🏾
My heart hopes that we will continue a generation of men who love hard, & do our best to be the best!

ILOSM fam,’ we’re sending a big congratulations to comedian/actor, Mike Epps, and his blushing bride, after the two quietly got married on Sunday, June 23, 2019. What we’ve now learned is that the shindig wasn’t a complete ‘secret,’ because Snoop Dogg, T.I., the iconic Whispers, and the legendary Doug E. Fresh, all managed to get an invite and help him usher in the new chapter of his life.

However, his current marital bliss did not come without a somewhat tense journey to get there. So before we share all of his beautiful festivities with y’all, we’ll take a quick trip back down memory lane to the intense divorce tussle with his first wife, Mechelle.

First Up: Where Epps & His EX-WIFE Came From, To Get Where He is Now…

It was back in September 2017, that we reported Mike Epps had just learned a whole new meaning to Johnnie Taylor’s soul classic song, “It’s Cheaper To Keep Her.” That’s when he and his now ex-wife of 12 years, Mechelle Epps, had finally made their divorce final, and the ex-Mrs. came up big time. Matter of fact, Mechelle’s new theme song could very well be Johnny Kemp’s joint, “Just Got Paid…it’s Friday night….” after the hefty payday she received in their divorce.

Meet Doug E.’s Grown Sons Now…

Their birth names are Dayquan and Solomon Davis. Their rap names are Slim and Trips and they are the rap duo, Square Off. This year (2018), Slim will be 29 years old and Trips will be turning 27. By that age, their dad had already made his impactful mark in hip hop as one of the pioneers of the art, with hits like “Keep Rising To The Top,” of course, “La-Di-Da-Di,” and several more. So it’s no secret to his sons, that they have some big shoes to feel, but they are up for the task.

In a past interview with New York Daily News, Slim and Trips revealed that their dad, Doug E. Fresh, doesn’t offer them handouts, nor act as a crutch for them. He makes them be men and earn their spot mostly on their own:

“We don’t got it easy at all,” said Trips. “We had to grind in this from the bottom, and we’re still grinding.” … “Everything we’re doing, they don’t really see him involved in it,” Slim said. “When he is involved in something, that’s us coming to him…mainly everything we do is our concepts, our own direction.” … While they say their dad has limited involvement, both agreed he is a valuable resource to have nearby. “He gives great advice,” said Slim.

They also said they don’t necessarily wanna stand in their dad’s shoes, they want their own shoes to feel, understandably so:

“People look at us to fill his shoes, but those are his shoes,” said Slim. “We got our own thing we’re doing.”

Slim and Trips also admitted that they started off trying to “mimic” their dad with their rap styles, but then eventually realized that was not the way to go. By the way, for those wondering the obvious question: Can they beatbox like their legendary pops? The answer is nah, not at all, according to Trips and Slim…

The good news is that even though they didn’t inherit their dad’s beatboxing skills, they still inherited his ability to spit REAL bars and not that wack ‘mumble rap’ nonsense some of these young rappers of today are labeling as hip hop.
