Remember the ’90s group Hi-Five? They had us dancing to hits like, “I Like The Way (Kissing Game)” and “She’s Playing Hard To Get.” There were 5 members at one time, hence the name Hi-Five, but they’ve actually had a total of nine members in the group…we’ll get to that in a minute.

Five of the nine members have been struck with some form of great tragedy and as of 2014, the tragedy was still striking, or shall I say, one of the members did the striking and reportedly caused the tragedy.

RUSSELL LAMONT NEAL – ARRESTED FOR THE MURDER OF HIS WIFE

Let’s start with the most recent horrific crime that was allegedly committed by one of the original members of Hi-Five, Russell Lamont Neal. In June 2014, Russell reportedly confessed to murdering his 24 year old wife, fitness model and aspiring boxer, Catherine “Brasilia” Martinez. Lamont was ‘deemed incompetent to stand trial.’

Russell was living in Houston, TX at the time of the incident. Houston police said that he walked into the Houston sheriff’s department building and stated something like ‘My wife is dead. I would like an attorney.’ He then calmly waited for the cops to question him and take him away. The cops eventually arrested him without incident.

One witness said “He wasn’t resisting arrest or fighting with them, or saying anything. When they brought him out in handcuffs, he was just as calm as can be and they just put him in a police car.”

After Russell was booked, he told police Catherine’s body was at their home at the apartment complex. Police said they had to break the door down and once inside, they found Catherine Martinez, dead on the living room floor with multiple stab wounds and blunt force trauma injuries to her head. Her body was covered with a blanket and her autopsy results showed that she died from puncture wounds. He was later released on $100,000 bond as he awaited trial.

By May 2015, U.S. Marshal’s Service deputies arrested Russell Lamont Neal, in Waco, TX after a warrant was issued out of Harris County, on charges that he failed to appear for a court date in connection with the July 2014 murder of his wife Catherine. The weird thing is that authorities say earlier that day, police were called to the residence Russell was in, after someone reported that a person there was showing suicidal tendencies. The police showed up, spoke with Russell and then left because they said that the court time had not passed yet, so they had no basis for arresting him. Later that same day, Russell skipped out on court and the police went back to the home and arrested him. That wasn’t a wise move on Russell’s part.

TRESTON IRBY – SHOT 5 TIMES

In 2009, Treston Irby was shot five times outside of a New Haven, Ct. nightclub. Police said Treston appeared to be an innocent bystander.

After going through depression once the fame was over, Treston said the shooting was almost like a blessing in disguise to get him back on track. “The day I woke up out at the hospital after getting shot 5 times, that’s when I knew it was time to start working,” Treston said.

TONY THOMPSON- ACCIDENTALLY OVERDOSED

Tony Thompson was known for his high pitched lead vocals. In 2007, he was just on his way to reviving his career and had also formed his new record label and signed Hi-Five to get things poppin’ again…but that’s when tragedy struck. Sadly, Tony was found dead outside of a Waco, TX apartment complex, by two of the complex’s security guards. He was found next to the air conditioning units located behind the apartments and died from huffing a toxic amount of freon from the air conditioning units. Freon is a hydrocarbon that is widely used in air conditioners and refrigerators.

Tony’s autopsy report was released by a medical examiner at the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences in Dallas, TX. It stated Tony had a history of inhaling freon. It also stated that no other drugs, nor alcohol were found in his body, but that his bloodstream did contain trace amounts of methadone, a drug commonly used to combat heroin addiction.

RODERICK “POOH” CLARK PASSED AWAY IN 2022

In 1993, one of the original members of Hi-Five, Roderick “Pooh” Clark, was involved in a near-fatal car accident, leaving him permanently paralyzed.

Sadly, on April 17, 2022, Roderick passed away after having been “hospitalized for pneumonia for two weeks before succumbing to complications from the infection and the disease,” according to TMZ.

TORIANO EASELY – FIRST DEGREE MURDER

According to a 1990 LA Times report, ‘HI-5 singer Toriano L. Easley was arrested for first-degree murder in Oklahoma City on Sept 1. [1990]. According to Oklahoma City Police Capt. Jim Gallegly, the singer allegedly shot an acquaintance following a heated argument. Easley, who sang background vocals on the HI-5 release “I Just Can’t Handle It” reportedly [was] expelled from the group.’ Toriano was 17 at the time of the shooting and arrest and he reportedly served most of his 15 year prison sentence.

MARCUS SANDERS

Marcus is the only member who hasn’t been struck by some horrible crime or tragedy, thank goodness.

We’re not sure how all of this happened within one group, but something clearly went wrong in their lives at various stages.

The last we’ve heard is that Russell is currently confined to a mental institution, after the court deemed him to be ‘too incompetent’ to stand trial…even though officers reportedly stated ‘he knew what he was doing when he killed Catherine.’ The ‘insanity’ conclusion apparently was determined after Russell supposedly said he longer answers to the name, Russell, and instead insisted that his bail-bondsman (and presumably everyone else) refer to him as “Jesus Christ.”

Catherine’s family thinks Russell’s putting on an act to avoid being sent to prison. “At Rusk State Hospital. He’s trying to play crazy,” said Catherine’s sister, Emy.

Russell’s Brother’s Story Is Eerily Similar

Years prior to Russell reportedly confessing to murdering his wife, his younger brother, Ronald Neal, had already been convicted for doing the same to his. Ronald was convicted of killing his 29-year old wife, Stovyne Magee.

Stovyne’s family never really liked Ronald:

Via True Crime Daily- “She had started telling me stuff like bits and pieces of things,” said Kevin Wesley, Stovyne’s brother. “Like you know how he would jump on her and lock her up in the closet and whipped her with a belt one time and with a belt buckle.”

“She wouldn’t hardly ever wear makeup, but if she put on ‘makeup-makeup,’ she was hiding something, you know, a bruise or a black eye or something,” said Niecy, [Stovyne’s sister-in-law].

In 2007, Stovyne’s family says things took a turn for the worst, after Ronald reportedly got drunk and knocked Stovyne to the ground, while also spraying disinfectant in her face.:

“She was done at that point,” said Kevin Wesley. …

“When he found out that she had filed for divorce, he had took some TVs, computers and stuff like that, and he left, and he called me that same day and he said ‘Yeah, this divorce ain’t gonna be easy.'”

And it’s not. The divorce turns deadly.

“Thursday morning when I turned my phone on, on my way to work, I had this phone call from Ronald,” said Niecy. “I’m like ‘Hello.’ He said — this is what he told me: ‘Bitch, get your black dress ready because I’m fixing to kill this bitch.'”

The day that Stovyne filed for divorce, Ronald did what he said he would…he reportedly killed her at her home. Stovyne’s 10-year-old son called 911 and stated Ronald had dragged his mom into the bedroom. The child pleaded for help.

Via TCD – “My mom said ‘Please Ronald, don’t hurt me,'” the boy tells the 911 operator. “Please, please rush ’cause she’s crying, please.”

The phone call disconnected after shots were fired, reportedly hitting Stovyne five times.

When cops arrived, Ronald barricaded himself inside the home, which led to a two-hour standoff. By the time they were able to get inside, Stovyne was already deceased.

Ronald reportedly planned on pleading insanity, but he eventually pled guilty to murdering his wife, Stovyne. He is currently serving an 80-year sentence in prison.

So many questions. Could Russell Neal have followed his brother, Ronald Neal’s, initial plan of appearing to be insane to avoid prison? Did they learn such volatile behavior from their upbringing as kids? Thoughts, ILOSM family?

Marcus is the only member who hasn’t been struck by some horrible crime or tragedy, thank goodness.

We’re not sure how all of this happened within one group, but something clearly went wrong in their lives at various stages.

As of today, Hi-Five is still doing their thing. The group now consists of Treston Irby, Shannon Gill, Marcus Sanders, Andre Ramseur (aka Dre Wonda), and Faruq Evans.

What Went Wrong With Hi-Five?

In the article, we revealed that one of the members, Russell Neal, had been charged with the murder of his wife, 24 year-old Catherine “Brasilia” Martinez, in June 2014.

When Russell met his wife, who was 20 years younger than him, he gave her the impression that he was rich and popular. However, she quickly learned that he was quite the opposite. Because Russell was struggling financially, Martinez was forced to be the bread winner for Russell and her 2 sons.

Despite the fact that she held their marriage down, Russell was physically abusive to her causing her to cover up bruises with makeup.

Glenda Lewis, one of Catherine’s sisters, spoke to Crime Watch Daily about the abuse that her sister endured.

There were bruises and scratches and she would try to come to our house with makeup, and she would try and cover it up with makeup. You would see the foundation, everything trying to cover up her eyes, but we would tell,” said Glenda.

After leaving her mom’s house on June 28, 2014, Catherine Martinez was nowhere to be found. Then, her husband calmly walked in the the Houston Police Department on July 1st 2014 to let the police know that his wife needed medical attention because she was hurt.

Police officers discovered the body of Catherine with several stab wounds and blunt force trauma.

Sadly, the family of Catherine Martinez has yet to receive justice for her death as Neal is a patient at Rusk State Hospital. A judge believes that he is mentally ill and incompetent to stand trial. However, prosecutors refuse to give up.

Neal has been ordered to continue treatment and has another competency hearing in August 2017.

Remember the 90’s group Hi-Five? They had us jammin’ to hits like “I Like The Way (Kissing Game)” and “She’s Playing Hard To Get.” They always had 5 members at one time, hence the name Hi-Five, but they’ve actually had a total of six members in the group…we’ll get to that in a minute.

Five of the 6 members have ALL been struck with some form of great tragedy and just as of last year (2014), the tragedy was still striking, or shall I say, one of the members did the striking and allegedly caused the tragedy.
