When news spread that NFL legend, Jim Brown, sadly passed away at age 87, on May 18, 2023, thousands of online tributes from fans and celebrities alike began pouring in. In case you missed it, Monique Brown (pictured below), Jim’s wife of 26 years, announced the heartbreaking news of Jim’s transition on her social media page Friday (May 19), when she informed the public that Jim had died at their home the day prior:

“It is with profound sadness that I announce the passing of my husband, Jim Brown. He passed away peacefully last night at our L.A. home. To the world he was an activist, actor and football star. To our family, he was a loving and wonderful husband, father and grandfather. Our hearts are broken.” – Monique Brown

Jim Brown’s Children

Now, several of the NFL legend-turned actor-turned activist’s six children have taken to social media to pay homage to their Dad.

Aris Brown – the 21-year-old son Jim shares with wife, Monique Brown – posted the following tribute to his father online:

Morgan Brown –Jim’s and Monique’s twenty-something-year-old daughter– posted a series of throwback photos of her dad the day after he passed away, along with this caption:

“My Father didn’t tell me how to live; he just did it and let me watch.” 🕊️🤎

My father was an extraordinary man who affected many people’s lives with his generosity, wisdom, and unshakable devotion. Even when I questioned myself, my father had the unique ability to sense my potential. When I was unable to believe in myself, he did. He always encouraged me to pursue my goals, motivating me to take chances and never accept mediocrity. He showed me that obstacles are simply opportunities for personal growth and advancement.

And I am grateful to admit that I have never encountered a man who could match my father’s greatness.”

Morgan also followed in her dad’s athletic footsteps, by playing soccer for USC IN 2021. She is now a professional photographer.

However, many say Pryor did his best friend dirty after he landed a $40 million deal; while Richard said it wasn’t personal, just business.

They shared a bond that seemed unbreakable. In his infamous 1982 stand-up film, Live On The Sunset Strip, Richard credited Jim with getting him off of drugs. He also said Brown helped him pull through his painful recovery after his 1980 free-basing accident that caused Pryor to set himself on fire and sustain third degree burns.

In the early ’80s, Richard Pryor appointed Jim Brown as the president of his then-new Indigo Productions Company after inking a $40 million deal with Columbia Pictures and the Coca-Cola Co.. But then something suddenly changed…something that left Jim confused, the NAACP pissed off, and many accusing Pryor of betraying his friend due to ‘Hollywood politics.’

According to Jim Brown’s autobiography, Out of Bounds, there were a few things that began to tear a riff into their friendship:

“I learned a lot about drugs through Richard Pryor. Although I didn’t indulge, when Richard was hitting the pipe, he never came by and rarely called. I’d drive to Richard’s house and we’d talk for hours, I would try to convince him to enter the hospital but he was not a man to push.”

After Richard’s free-basing accident, Jim said the relationship between Richard and his family became far more strained, and he also didn’t trust the women in his life. Pryor thought they were after his money:

“How could a motherf***er like me get these fine bit**es? They don’t really love me. They want my money,” Jim claims Pryor told him.

Jim Brown’s autobiographical book

Pryor’s family asked Jim for Pryor’s safe combination, but Richard asked Jim to tell them “no”, says Brown…this is where it got ugly:

“Richard was so weak, he could barely write. His family called me again and said they needed $25,000 to pay bills. I had to talk Richard into writing a check. But his family came to resent me. I had refused to give them the combination to the safe.”

“Then it came apart. I had been the one the family had to go through for money and I made crucial decisions on his behalf. One day, Richard told his family that I had become like a father to him.”

One afternoon, Richard asked me to come by. When I arrived, his family hardly looked at me. Richard was upset, I asked him, what’s up? He said, ‘Well, look, I don’t think I really need you anymore. I think my family can take care of everything.’ My mouth fell slightly open, when I regained my composure, I said okay and left.”

And that was how it all fell apart. Afterwards, the NAACP and many in the public, alleged that Pryor fired Brown from the president position of his Indigo Productions company after receiving pressure from his partners, Columbia Pictures and the Coca-Cola Co., to fire Jim and most of the other African American employees on his Indigo staff. In 1983, Richard did an interview with The Bulletin Newspaper and strongly denied those allegations, stating that neither Coca-Cola, nor Columbia Pictures had anything to do with his decisions and that it was just business…nothing personal..

In the end, Jim’s and Richard’s relationship was allegedly very strained.

It would’ve been great if the two of them had been able to remain close and gotten Indigo Productions off of the ground because during that time, Richard’s company was the only Black-owned production company with a deal as large as his. They could have made a lot of noise in the movie game together, without compromising their characters, nor the art in the process.

In case you’ve been unplugged from social media for the past few hours, Kanye, Jim Brown and Donald Trump, are the new faces of comical memes, jokes and overall online chatter. They’re trending everywhere following their early Thursday meeting inside the Oval Office, for several reasons: (1) It was odd and seemingly pointless, other than a press-opp for all of them; (2) ‘Ye and Jim were lookin’ pretty coon-like; and (3) we still don’t know what the actual focal point of the meeting was.

At any rate, former civil rights legend, Jim Brown, has now been forced to defend his meeting with Trump; against thousands of folks who’ve been calling him out for condoning Trump’s oftentimes, racial/gender/socio-economic biased policies and statements.

Overall, the meeting was strange and Kanye overpowered it with narcissistic, socio-political rants that were kinda all over the place.

At one point during the meeting, Trump referred to Kanye as a “smart cookie,” then also gave Jim a compliment for being “smart” as well. That’s a back-handed compliment in my humble opinion. It’s sorta like telling a darker complexioned African American woman, ‘You’re beautiful…for a dark skinned woman,’ as opposed to admiring her simply for the beautiful woman that she actually is…PERIOD. Could be me, but Trump seemed as if he were giving ‘Ye and Jim subliminal pats on their heads and subsequently complimenting them on ‘being smart…for a negro,’ but I digress. Anywho, back to the topic at hand.

Jim Brown mostly sat in silence, as Kanye ranted and raved in true ‘Ye fashion about well…everything. Kanye’s rants were all over the place and Jim Brown could barely get a word in edgewise. But on second thought, it’s unclear as to whether, or not, his silence was a sign of regret for being there. Whatever the case, here’s one of the few things Jim did manage to say when Trump pulled him into the convo:

“You know why I’m here? I’m here to serve, I’m not here to ask for anything,” Jim told Trump. Trump’s reply was, “Yeah, that’s really nice man.”

Then Jim Brown held a press conference on the White House lawn, explaining why he was there to ‘serve’ Trump. He started off with announcing why that meeting made him feel “privileged”:

“We had the opportunity to meet with the President of the United States, which everybody doesn’t have that privilege.”

The NFL legend then pissed off many even further, when a reporter asked if he’d discussed Trump’s insensitive bashing of Colin Kaepernick and other NFL players who take a knee to peacefully protest against police brutality and officers’ unjust murders of people of color:

“I can be very blunt about taking a knee. …First of all, I’m an American. That flag is my flag. Things that I’ve overcome in this country…make me a better person. I don’t think that we should take knees and protest, instead of standing up for our flag. I think we should work it out as a family.”

…Says the man who once publicly supported Muhammad Ali’s fight for equal rights against America’s judicial system. Hmmm…check out the video clip of his full press conference below…

As Donald Trump continues what appears to be his I’m-not-racist-because-some-of-my-best-friends-are-Black public display of affection for his African American brethrens, yet another one has shown up for him. That would be NFL icon-turned actor, Jim Brown.

Jim Brown’s Trump Praise And Shunning Of Black Folks Opinion

Now, we’re not surprised by this one, due to Jim’s prior praise for the former reality show star-turned president. Nonetheless it’s still interesting that even now, the dude who once stood up for freedom of speech, equal opportunity and civil rights in the 1960s, is going to bat for a man who seemingly does not. At any rate, check out what Jim said in his latest interview on the syndicated show, JT The Brick Radio Show:

Via Yahoo: “I should be criticizing Trump on every level because he does certain things that call for criticism, but when I look at television I see all these announcers become experts and they’re pointing the fingers and they’re not doing a doggone thing but pointing their fingers, I find myself really pulling for the president,” Brown said. “Now, that would make me very unpopular in the black community, very unpopular with a lot of Americans … but I think that there are certain good things that are coming out of this presidency because we’ve never seen anything like it.”

Trump’s Praise Of Jim Brown

Of course Trump pounced all over the opportunity to attempt to confirm to his followers, that he’s loved by Black folks as well. On Monday morning, he immediately took to Twitter to thank Jim Brown for his support and to also take credit for the result of former president Barack Obama’s hard work:

“Thank you to the great @JimBrownNFL32, perhaps the greatest running back of all time, for your wonderful words and support. Since our meeting in New York, African-American UNEMPLOYMENT has reached the LOWEST LEVEL IN HISTORY. You get it!”

Thank you to the great @JimBrownNFL32, perhaps the greatest running back of all time, for your wonderful words and support. Since our meeting in New York, African-American UNEMPLOYMENT has reached the LOWEST LEVEL IN HISTORY. You get it!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 27, 2018

In case you’re wondering why the current unemployment decline is NOT Trump’s doing, The Tylt breaks it down precisely:

…Experts argue it was Obama who successfully righted the American economy after the recession hit. The economic gains we’re currently seeing are all directly attributable to former President Obama’s efforts.

The current economic expansion just became the third-longest on record. The economy has been adding jobs every month for more than six years, the longest winning streak since World War II. And the federal budget deficit has sharply declined from a high of 9.8 percent of GDP in the middle of the Great Recession to a manageable 3.2 percent last year.
When it comes to job creation, the economy has been adding jobs for 78 months in a row. Saying Trump is responsible for the current economy is completely disingenuous—his main efforts have been to undo Obama’s legacy, many of which are directly responsible for the economic gains the U.S. is seeing.

Not Surprised By Jim Brown’s Trump Support

Embed from Getty Images

As previously mentioned, Jim Brown’s latest interview does not surprise me one bit. Why? Because ever since I first laid eyes on him standing with Trump outside of Trump Tower after Trump won the election, I knew right then and there, that the brotha’s past push for civil rights was long over.

Other reasons this doesn’t surprise me, are because it was just days earlier, that Jim was photographed hanging out with Trump’s other Black celebrity supporter, Kanye West.

And of course we can’t forget about the time Jim Brown spoke out against NFL player, Colin Kaepernick, for silently protesting against the inhumane treatment and killings of people of color. That’s the very thing Jim Brown fought for with Muhammad Ali in 1967. Wow.

Listen, we all have a right to support any politician our hearts desire, but that doesn’t make any one exempt from being called out over it, just sayin.’

NFL icon, Jim Brown, has many saying “What the hell?!!” following his recent comments about ousted NFL player, Colin Kaepernick- who exercised his first amendment rights to peacefully protest the thousands of murders of African Americans at the hands of police and against other injustices in America.

Brown The Activist?

Let me first remind everyone of who Jim Brown is…or was: He’s an NFL Hall of Famer-turned actor-turned activist. Now he wholeheartedly disagrees with Kaepernick’s activism. Confused much? Understood, I was too…at first.

Brown’s Odd Message About Kaepernick’s Activism

Colin Kaepernick

Brown recently had this to say about Colin Kaepernick taking a knee during the singing of the National Anthem of NFL games and Kaepernick’s current difficulty now finding placement on an NFL team this year:

Via ThePostGame: “I want to be in his corner…God bless him,” Brown told ThePostGame. “I’m going to give you the real deal: I’m an American.’ … “I don’t desecrate my flag and my national anthem. I’m not gonna do anything against the flag and national anthem. I’m going to work within those situations. But this is my country, and I’ll work out the problems, but I’ll do it in an intelligent manner. If you have a cause, I think you should organize it, present it in a manner where it’s not only you standing or sitting on one knee, but a lot of people that is gonna get behind each other and do something about it,” Brown said. “If I ask you one question: Who is Colin calling on to follow what he’s talking about?”

Brown probably forgot in that moment, that when Muhammad Ali (the man Jim Brown backed) took a stand against the government during his 1967 draft refusal, he stood ALONE, without asking anyone to join him at first, because that’s what leaders oftentimes do. But there’s more…

Via ThePostGame: “Colin has to make up his mind whether he’s truly an activist or he’s a football player,” Brown said. “Football is commercial. You have owners. You have fans. And you want to honor that if you’re making that kind of money. … You have to understand there’s intelligence that’s involved, OK? I can’t be two things at once that contradict each other. If I sign for money, then the people I sign with, they have rules and regulations.”

Where’s the “rule” in the NFL handbook, that says players cannot peacefully exercise their freedom of speech as an American citizen?

Colin Kaepernick kneeling during National Anthem (2016)

Whether anyone agrees, or disagrees with Kaepernick, here’s the undeniable factor that Mr. Brown should remember: Maybe EVERY player doesn’t just “sign for money”…maybe they do it because they love it as well. Maybe they also live by a personal motto that no amount of money can buy their submission as a human being, much like what Kaepernick has displayed.

Brown’s Life Parallels His Own Advice…& “Roots”

After reading Brown’s comments, it reminded me of another interview he did recently, discussing the difference between athletes like him and Ray Lewis (who is also against Kaepernick’s fight against injustices), verses athletes like Ali, Kareem Abdul Jabar, and Kapernick. Then it all made sense:

Via Esquire: “When Kareem stood with us at the Summit, when we backed Muhammad Ali’s position on the draft, he was the youngest person there. He was going on to great stardom,” [explained Jim Brown]. “The risk he took to be there was unbelievable, because it could have killed his whole career. By standing up, you could lose endorsement deals. You could lose contracts. People were not interested in you standing up; they wanted you to play whatever sport it was they signed you to play.”

L-R: Reality television star and transition adviser Omarosa Manigault, NFL legends, Jim Brown and Ray Lewis and Rev.
Brown continued:

“So you’ll find there’s a brotherhood of individuals. I’m a brother to Ray Lewis, a different generation. Curtis Martin. I still love Kareem and the fact he is an activist. We have great respect for each other that goes beyond the field of play. There are great athletes, and there are athletes that are great—that go beyond their greatness on the field or on the court. Those are the guys that are really like-minded individuals, who will stand up forever to try to make things better for themselves and for the people who come after them.”

Jim Brown stood with Muhammad Ali in 1967 as Ali risked his career by refusing to be drafted for the Vietnam War because it went against his social and religious beliefs. Brown’s current advice to Kaepernick runs parallel his own life, because Brown stood by Ali, only after he, himself, had just retired from the NFL. Brown also stated that he didn’t fully agree with Ali’s stance, but he did have great respect for his bravery and felt that Ali had a right as an American to stand up for what he believed in.

(L) “Fiddler” (played by Louis Gossett Jr.) and (R) “Kunta Kinte” (played by Lavar Burton) in “Roots”

Some could also argue that Jim Brown’s life has a great parallel to the 70’s classic film, Roots, as well: Ali and Kaepernick vs. Brown is like “Kunte Kinte” and “Fiddler. Fiddler was the “Yessuh Massa” slave who ultimately gained great respect for Kunta’s bravery of trying to escape the plantation…even though Fiddler never found that courage for himself.

NFL icon/civil rights activist, Jim Brown (80), was recently spotted in LAX airport with his lovely 40 year old “tender-roni” wife, Monique Brown. Okay, we know their 40 year age difference is surprising, but what’s even more surprising to many, is Jim’s response when asked about Pres. Donald Trump and also about Kanye West’s recent reversal of support for Trump after he didn’t get invited to the presidential inauguration.

**SCROLL DOWN FOR JIM BROWN’S VIDEO RESPONSE**

Before we get into what Brown recently said at the airport, we’ll fill you in on what he said a while back about this topic in case you missed it: Jim Brown voted for Hillary Clinton and publicly supported her throughout the presidential election. However, after Trump won the election, Jim said he would support Trump as president and that he disagreed with his fellow civil rights leader, Congressman John Lewis,’ sentiments that Trump is not a “legitimate President” due to the intelligence findings that Russia allegedly hacked the election to help Trump win. Brown’s reaction to Lewis was that although he, himself [Brown], was also “defeated” by Trump’s win, “He won, in my opinion, fair and square, and I’m going to support him as President of the United States.”

The one detail Jim overlooked was that he based his assessment off of his “opinion,” while Congressman Lewis is basing his off of highly classified information that prominent politicians, such as himself, recently were made aware of. But now Jim Brown had more to say…
Jim Brown has further explained his alternative view about the ‘alternative facts’ president, recently telling TMZ that “His [Trump’s] seat is a great seat of power. The president won his position. He is president. If he can give me respect, I sure can give him respect. And if I can go to have him help poor people, inner city people … then why shouldn’t I do that?”

As far as Kanye, Brown was pretty much like ‘that’s Kanye’s business, not mine.’ See what else he said below.

WATCH JIM BROWN’S ALTERNATIVE VIEW RESPONSE ON TRUMP

Overall, it seems like Jim Brown is treating Trump’s win like an NFL game- where when the team loses the game, the players are trained to still show respect to the winning team, to avoid looking like ‘sore losers.’ After watching the video, it doesn’t necessarily sound like Jim Brown is a ride-or-die player for Trump, because he still doesn’t agree with Trump’s policies. BUT Jim does sound like the old player who has lost his will to fight and has thrown in the towel, because he believes that there is nothing else anyone can do about Trump since he holds the most powerful position in the world basically. However…

Many would argue that Brown’s viewpoint is based on an ‘alternative fact.’ While it is a fact that Trump holds a powerful position, it’s an ‘alternative fact’ that Trump’s opposers have to simply sit back and accept Trump’s ruling. That’s evident in the millions who have protested and brought major heat to Trump’s executive orders, several of which Trump and his team reportedly have now had to discreetly abandon due to pressure from the public’s opposition, according to reports by MSNBC and several other media outlets.

Anywho, ILOSM fam’ let us know what you think about Jim Brown’s ‘alternative view’ on Trump.
