ILOSM fam’ if you haven’t heard by now, we have sad news to report, Walter “Junie” Morrison, one of the founding members of the legendary 70’s soul group, The Ohio Players and a member of Parliament-Funkadelics, has passed away at 62 years young.

Junie is the singer/songwriter/keyboardist/producer known for his contributions to many hits, such as “Fire,” “Funky Worm,” “Pain,” Ecstacy,” “One Nation Under A Groove,” and so many other now highly sampled pieces of funk classics.


News began spreading about Junie’s death around mid-February. However, he actually passed away on January 21, 2017, but according to his daughter, their family chose to to make the announcement a month later. The cause of his death hasn’t been released, but on the day of the announcement, his daughter, Akasha Morrison released this statement via Facebook:

On January 11, 2017 Junie Morrison reposted into the world of social media: it would be SELAH. so be it. And ten days later, SELAH. Dear friends and colleagues, we lost another great one. I’m sure you can agree that Junie will be greatly missed. I wasn’t around my father much but somehow I am like him in so many ways. In that regard, thank you for your support and respect of our privacy during this time. -Akasha Morrison, etc.

Singer Solange Knowles (a.k.a. Beyonce’s lil’ sis’), paid homage to Junie Morrison on her fire album, A Seat At The Table. She also stated that her parents, Tina and Matthew, were the reason why she was such a huge fan of his work.
