In case you haven’t heard, L.A. Reid released a memoir titled, “Sing to Me: My Story of Making Music, Finding Magic, and Searching for Who’s Next,”  a few years ago. In it, explained how he and his production partner, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds, got caught up in a longstanding battle between Jermaine and Michael Jackson that many of us never knew knew about.

L.A. Reid said that while he and Babyface were producing an album for Jermaine Jackson (who was signed to their record label, LaFace Records, at that time), they’d suddenly received a call from Michael. MJ asked them if they would be interested in meeting with him to discuss working together on some new music. L.A. and Babyface agreed, but decided not to tell Jermaine until after they saw where the convo’ with MJ would lead to.

After the three of them met up, L.A. and Babyface decided to begin working with Michael three weeks later.

What Happened Next Was What They Totally Weren’t Expecting

Jermaine found out about L.A. and Babyface’s plans to work with his brother and to say he was livid is an understatement. According to L.A. Reid, Jermaine immediately demanded to be released from their label. L.A. and Babyface didn’t want Jermaine to leave, but they also didn’t want to NOT work with Michael Jackson- the greatest entertainer of all time.

Since they were in a pickle, they went back to MJ and told him that his brother was pissed. Then something else happened that shocked them.  L.A. said Michael gave them the most cold-hearted response to ever, regarding his big bro’:

‘“He’ll get over it,” [Michael said].

‘That’s not really the problem,’ I said. ‘The problem was that he wants off the label now.’

“Did he sign a contract?” asked Michael.

‘Yes,’ I said.

“Then he’ll have to live with it because those are the rules,” Michael said and walked out.

That Michael Jackson was one shrewd man. He was not wrong, but you didn’t expect that from Peter Pan. You expect a little compassion or something. No. Cold as ice.’

Jermaine Dissed The Hell Outta Michael In The Worst Way

Then Came Jermaine’s DISS RECORD About His Brother…

L.A. said MJ and Jermaine met up at their Mom’s house to talk it out, but that two days later, he got two very different phone calls. Jermaine called L.A. and said the song is gonna stay on the radio; MJ called and said ‘You’ve gotta put a stop to this.’

They were right back where they’d started, but L.A. said this is what happened next:

“The record disappeared off the air, as if it had never been there in the first place. I don’t know what Michael did. I don’t know if Michael did anything, but it went away in a flash.”

Aaron is 32 years old now, and some of you may recall seeing him on VH1’s “Sweet Sixteen” reality series in 2005, where his parents lavished him with gifts and threw an expensive birthday party, where some of the most popular rappers at that time performed- Kanye West, Swizz Beats, and Jermaine Dupri. Jay-Z and Puffy also attended.

Well, fast forward to today and Aaron is determined to build his own name without leaning on his parents’ legacy and he’s now flourishing in his career, or shall we say- careers…

He has a few, beginning in 2013 he was an A&R at Epic Records (the label his Pops was once the CEO). In case you don’t know, an A&R gig is one of the most revolving door gigs in the music industry. A&R’s get fired all the time because as soon as they don’t find the next hot artists that the label can successfully make money from, the label looks for the next A&R. So Aaron’s multi-year year span as an A&R is pretty impressive. Why? Because regardless of if his dad was running the company or not, Aaron still had to prove that he deserved to be there, by bringing the right artists to the table. However, these days, Aaron is reportedly a producer and A&R for Hitco Music.

Bad Boy Records owner, Puffy, is Aaron’s godfather, and Aaron even gave Puff a run for his money once when he stepped up his A&R game to successfully win over an artist who both he and Puffy were trying to grab.

An A&R’s pay ranges from about 27K a year, to as high as about $175K per year. Their salaries depend on many factors. Aaron’s A&R salary combined with the fact that he’s a professional singer, songwriter, and producer, means that he is standing on his own and doesn’t need Mommy and Daddy to cut him a check every month. Isn’t that every parents dream eventually?

A few years ago he had a budding single titled “Crazy Luv,” but he seems to have put that on that project on the back burner for now. Check out his 2011 video below, which his sister, Ashley (Pebbles’ daughter), co-directed with him.

Aaron said this about stepping outside of his parents’ shadow and he says that he takes his dad’s advice to heart everyday:

“Every day I think about what he told me as a kid, ‘You gotta do what you gotta do so you can do what you wanna do,’” he says. “I take that every day, think about it and apply it.”

WHAT HAPPENED WHEN PEBBLES CAUGHT L.A. REID & PAULA ABDUL

In L.A. Reid’s book, “Sing To Me,” he let a whole bunch of cats outta the bag about their past drama-filled marriage. One of them is when L.A. says Pebbles had already suspected something was up between he and Paula Abdul when they worked on a song together. But Pebbles flipped out when she later caught them at his house, so says L.A. Reid:

L.A. Reid- “We asked if [Paula] would choreograph a music video for Kenny  [Babyface] … and she said she would trade us for a song. We wrote ‘Knocked Out’ for her and we took [her] into Studio Masters, where it took a long time to cut her vocal. … We didn’t work on the [Paula] album — Pebbles saw to that…

BUT THEN THINGS GOT UGLY…

Usher dropped a few unknown tidbits of old school facts about his personal life and his career, which seemed to kinda all be intertwined together. In a previous interview with The Roots’ drummer, Questlove, on his Pandora radio show, Questlove Supreme, Usher chopped it up about everything, from how he got caught up in music legends, Antonio ‘L.A.’ Reid’s and Kenny ‘Babyface’ Edmond’s beef back in the day, to how Tevin Campbell ended up getting work that was originally meant for him; to issues with his ex-wife/mother of his two kids, Tameka Raymond, and also his mother/ex-manager, Jonetta.

L.A. Reid & Babyface Drama Led To Tevin Campbell Taking Usher’s Songs

It turns out “Can We Talk” was originally Usher’s song…until Babyface gave it away to Tevin Campbell in order to spite LA Reid at that time, according to Usher:

Usher: “When I first signed to LaFace Records, I wanted to do an album with Babyface and LA Reid, right? I signed specifically for that reason. So LA Reid wanted Babyface to work on me…and they were going through, you know, a lot of drama at the time. They were kinda severing their ties. He [Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds] got mad…and he built an entire album for me, and he gave the whole album to somebody else…Tevin Campbell! ‘Can We Talk’…was my song…”

“Can We Talk” ended up being the biggest song of Tevin’s career. It stayed at #1 on the R&B charts for weeks and the entire album, I.m Ready, sold 2 million+ albums. By the way, I dig Usher and Tevin, but I gotta admit that after the way Tevin killed it on “Can We Talk,” I couldn’t imagine ANY other singer recording that song…not even Usher.

Issues With His Momager vs. His Mother

Usher’s mother was his manager for years, until he fired her. But he acknowledges his gratitude for her…

Usher: “I’m a grown man in theory because I’ve always been the man of the house…I’ve elected to be the provider of the family even though my mother is the protector…she crippled me a little bit for a minute because my focus wasn’t, had nothing to do with business. Had everything to do with art and I thank her for that because I wouldn’t of established the focus that I have now…if I was always kind of trying to figure out who’s trying to take the money, where the money’s coming from, I would’ve been petty…I would have lost sight of what the goal was…”

Biggest Regret? Denying A Young Chris Brown

Usher: “So there’s one thing in my career that I definitely regret, one thing. And to this day I battle with it which is why I always show support of this artist whenever he asks…So his manager comes in…They show him to me…I was working on an album at this time, they wanted him to perform on this album…I was like okay cool…Then I went to my team and they was like ‘I don’t think you should work with this artist’…Then he left…Chris Brown.”

Ex-Wife, Tameka Raymond & Why He Stayed So Long

There were rumors that Usher fired his mother because she didn’t approve of him marrying Tameka and that caused tension in their professional life. Usher didn’t specify if the firing rumor was was true, but he did acknowledge that his Mom tried to warn him about marrying Tameka…

Usher: “That marriage and that relationship was gonna come to an end…but it served a purpose in my life…And no matter what my mother was attempting to tell me, and a lot of people were trying to tell me about that, I think a lot of it had to do with my lack thereof a father…I did not want to be a person who would just roll out…”

In his memoir, “Sing To Me: My Story of Making Music, Finding Magic, and Searching For Who’s Next,” L.A. Reid revealed details about the horrible time in his former artist, Rihanna’s life, after she and Chris Brown went through their domestic dispute in 2009. He talked about how he and Rihanna had formed a close relationship and how she appeared at his home to duck the media and try to put the pieces of her career and personal life back together again.

Here is what L.A. detailed about he and Rihanna’s relationship and the crazy aftermath that followed in an excerpt from his book:

“Our relationship really blossomed after “Umbrella.” Rihanna started coming to my office and we would discuss her follow-up…

I was sitting around my new house in the Hamptons with a couple of my A&R people, smoking some weed and listening to the new Rihanna album in the final stages. When we heard the song “Good Girl Gone Bad,” I knew I had found the title for her album. I had no idea how ironic that would become…

She was set to perform at the Grammys in February 2009. The producer of the show reached me in my suite at the Beverly Hills Hotel the day before the Grammys. Rihanna had not showed for the rehearsal, he told me. The next phone call came from a publicist who worked for us. “Rihanna just had a car accident,” she said. “That’s all I can tell you right now, but she’s in the hospital.”

As it turned out it wasn’t a car accident, it was her incident with Chris Brown. I never knew much more about what happened than the public did. The details were kept from me. I saw the photos of her battered face the same time everybody else did. I managed to get through to Rihanna at the hospital, but it was a brief conversation. I was able to voice some concern, which I hoped was comforting, but I felt helpless. She was in bad shape and embarrassed, and didn’t want any visitors. All this was happening in her life at the point where she was moving beyond simply being a pop star with some hits into a lady the world cared about. It was tragic.

L.A. said he finally got a call from Rihanna and this is what happened next:

Several weeks later, her manager called to say Rihanna was coming to New York and wanted to see me, which somewhat surprised me. The fact that she was making my house her first stop in New York showed me that apparently our relationship was stronger than I had realized. It wasn’t until then that I saw just how close we’d become.

She flew into town on a private jet, but the paparazzi still found her. She came straight to my apartment and they swarmed outside my building. I didn’t ask her too much about what happened. We talked mostly about what her next career step would be. I ordered some Caribbean food and we listened to music. I played her a couple of demos, but there wasn’t a lot of talk — most of our communication was telepathic. My only advice to her was to turn to music — it sounded cliché but that was what had gotten me through dark times. She stayed for hours. She already had her own A&R team — which I wasn’t part of, although I was the head of the company. We decided to start working together more.

She had stayed at my house so long, I was late for a meeting with Bon Jovi at a private club up the street. I delicately extricated myself and told her to feel free to stay at my house after I left. Later, Erica told me she stayed another couple of hours.

Sometimes an artist needs help making art, sometimes an artist needs help making a hit, and sometimes an artist just needs help.”

L.A. Reid couldn’t have ended it on a more precise note- just like we always say, here at ILoveOldSchoolMusic: entertainers may oftentimes appear larger than life, but the reality is that they are not without flaws, they’re simply perfectly flawed human beings who sometimes need help, just like the rest of us. It’s a beautiful thing that L.A. was able to be the support system that Rihanna needed at that time. Both she and Chris were very young adults then and hopefully they’ve been able to grow and learn from that terrible incident.

When L.A. Reid was promoting his then-new memoir in 2016, “Sing To Me,” he let several cats outta the bag, so to speak. One of them was the time he recalled the time when Whitney Houston was signed to Arista Records (where he was the President), he realized that he’d “failed” her in a major way, and he still regrets it to this day. L.A.’s regret is that he allowed Whitney Houston to do the interview that he set up with Diane Sawyer back in the day, which ultimately caused serious damage to Whitney’s reputation and career. Why? Because that’s when Whitney told Diane her now infamous phrase, “Crack is wack.” The media ran with her quote and our beloved Whitney was never able to live that down.

L.A. confessed it was during that interview, that he instantly realized just how bad of a drug problem Whitney actually had at that time. Below is what he told Wendy Williams about that interview and Whitney’s “crack” quote:

“I didn’t really know…I was so naive. I didn’t realize that there was an issue. I said let’s get Whitney with Diane Sawyer and promote the album.

She [Diane Sawyer] asked her the question about substance abuse and when Whitney said, ‘crack is whack,’ my mouth dropped. I felt like I really failed her. My job is to protect talent and try to present them in a way that people will love them. My job is not to drum up controversy or drum up gossip. My job is to present them in the best possible way, so I COMPLETELY failed her that day.”

Although that interview was an extremely sad thing to witness, in a way, it probably lifted somewhat of a burden off of Whitney’s shoulders, because the “Perfect Patti/pop princess” image that had been created for her, by her label and marketing team, was almost too much for any person to live up to.
