Lionel Richie’s youngest daughter has just announced her pregnancy with her new rich hubby. The Richie fam,’ known for their diverse talent, seems to have another reason to celebrate.

Although Lionel Richie is renowned for his iconic music career, his daughter has managed to carve her own path in the entertainment game, as a sought-after model. Despite leading a relatively low-key life, the news of her pregnancy has caused a slight stir among her fans and media alike.

But who exactly is this lucky dad-to-be? Well, he happens to come from a pretty interesting background himself. Sofia’s husband, Elliot Grainge – whom she married in April 2023 –  is the founder and CEO of 10K Projects. This independent record label has made waves in the music industry, signing some of popular names in today’s hip hop game, such as Tekashi 6ix9ine, Trippie Redd, and Iann Dior.

Interestingly, Elliot’s pops, Lucian, heads up Universal Music Group. Lucian has played a significant role in shaping the music industry as we know it today as well.

Although Sofia Richie has gained fame through her work in the fashion industry, her private life has always garnered considerable attention as well. Her previous high-profile relationship with reality TV star, Scott Disick (a.k.a. Cortney Kardashian’s ex-husband) made headlines, even sparking Lionel Richie to publicly throw a lil’ shade at it when he said he was concerned about her dating such a controversial older cat, like Scott, at that time. Lionel Richie and his daughter, Nicole Richie, share a common personality trait- their openness with the public about their personal lives…even the not-so-pretty-details. And the time that they both opened up about how Lionel ultimately was able to get Nicole to kick her addiction to cocaine and heroin, is no different…

LIONEL GAVE NICOLE RICHIE A MUCH NEEDED WAKE-UP CALL

Lionel Richie’s method to get Nicole off of heroin took a great deal of persistence and an equally terrifying amount of patience as a parent. In 2003, Nicole was arrested for heroin possession. In a prior interview with Piers Morgan, Lionel explained how he used the drug-fueled death of three of his friends and two of Nicole’s friends to finally wake her up:

Lionel Richie: “I went to [Nicole] and I said, ‘When I was growing up I lost three friends, they were the hippest friends I ever knew in life . . . I said, ‘It’s going to happen to your generation. I don’t want you to be in that list of three.’ Three months later her friend died of an overdose and I went back to her and very quietly, I said, ‘I am sorry to hear that, that’s one.’ And sure enough, one year later the second one died and I said, ‘That’s two’ and I got a phone call and she said, ‘Dad I need help, I don’t want to be the third one.'” -Lionel Richie

LIONEL AND BRENDA RICHIE LEAPED INTO ACTION TO HELP THEIR BABY

Lionel was about to kick off a huge tour at the time Nicole called him for help and this is what he and then-wife Brenda Richie, did next to help their child:

LR: “I said [to Nicole], ‘I am with you’ and I canceled [my] tour. I said, ‘Me and your mother [Brenda Richie]’ — who didn’t get along that well — ‘Me and your mother are checking into rehab with you.'”

In a People Magazine interview, Nicole detailed what it was like for her to make the decision to quit drug usage altogether:

“I got so much so fast that nothing really excited me anymore. I kind of took matters into my own hands and was creating drama in a very dangerous way. I think I was just bored, and I had seen everything – especially when you’re young, you just want more. At 18 I had just been doing a lot of cocaine.”

By her early 20’s she was addicted to heroin and this is what she says she told herself:

“This isn’t the life … this was heroin.” …”[Now] I’m happy for the things I have accomplished. I’m happy I’m not in that state anymore.”

Lionel Richie admitted that he once thought the role of a dad was to be a provider, so he always made sure he performed and toured to bring home the bread. But after seeing what Nicole went through, he confessed “I think I wasn’t a good dad.”

In response to Lionel’s confession, Nicole stated:

“I never blamed him. I think he blamed himself. It was very humble of my dad to come forward and say, ‘I made a mistake.’ I love him for that.”

This is so inspirational to any parents out there who may be disconnected from their children. It’s never too late to admit your wrongs and try to do right by your child. We applaud Lionel and Nicole Richie for their willingness to share their flaws and vulnerabilities from both ends of the spectrum.

Lionel Richie’s daughter may only be 23 years old, but when it comes to defending certain aspects of who she is as a young Black woman, she’d be ready to give somebody an old school pimp slap if they try her. Let Sofia explain…

In an interview with Complex Magazine, Sofia got pissed off when recalling the many times she’s experienced racism in the fashion world and other social settings from people who didn’t realize that she is half African American:

“I’m very light, so some people don’t really know that I’m black. I’ve been in situations where people will say something kind of racist and I’ll step in and they’ll be like, ‘Oh, well, you’re light,’” [Sofia] says, her eyes flashing. “That still doesn’t cut it, buddy. It’s 2016—you better get your shit together before you get slapped out here.”

That’s right Sofia! Let ’em know what time it is! Time to cue up that pimp slap…

As you can see, Lionel Richie’s daughter is an ‘adorable’ 23-year-old on the outside, but she refuses to follow that brainwashed, old school trend of just being happy because she can “pass” for something other than what she beautifully and authentically is. She’s biracial, with primarily Black and Jewish heritage and she doesn’t have to defy, deny, nor suppress any ounce of her parents’ lineage just to pacify others. So we give the young lady a hand clap for always steppin’ up to put ignorance in check.

Although Sofia Richie is mostly know and praised for her modeling career and beautiful face, she admitted that she wanted to be a singer like her pops at one point:

“I wanted to have a music career for a long time. Music is my life and it speaks to me—Rihanna, a lot of Frank Ocean, I love Shawn Mendes!” she says. “But I don’t want my own music career. I’m Lionel Richie’s daughter. When I do this I have to be 100 percent good, and it was too much pressure for me. I just want to have my own direction and be free with it. I don’t want anyone to have a hold on me because of my dad.”

Maybe one day, we’ll hear her music, but in the meantime, Miss Richie will keep getting her paper on the runway and in magazines!

Aretha Franklin’s grandbaby has musical genes running all through her DNA. But was it enough to impress “American Idol” judges, Lionel Richie, Katie Perry, and Luke Bryan? Welp, let’s see *Video is below*…

Initially, Judges Were Surprised

When 15-year old Grace Franklin — daughter of Kecalf Cunningham, Aretha Franklin’s son — stepped out in front of the “American Idol” panel Sunday, February 27, 2022, it was an all-or-nothin’ kinda moment. She surprised the judges when she disclosed her musical royalty lineage:

“My grandma is Aretha Franklin. … I was really close with my grandma. I got to see her all the time. I used to travel with her a lot,” Grace said about Aretha Franklin. “I don’t think I could fully grasp the fact that she was known worldwide, because to me she was always just ‘Grandma.'”

Grace continued:

“I feel like people expect me to sing exactly like her, but I am my own artist and I have my own voice,” Grace confessed.

Before getting down to business, Lionel Richie shared a few personal stories with Grace about her grandmother:

“Stop right there! That’s your grandma!?”, Richie asked Grace. “No one knows this about your grandma but I’m going to tell you. When you were walking in the house, you think, ‘Oh we gonna talk about music, are we gonna talk about the arrangement?’ And she goes, ‘Lionel, I’ve got some collard greens I’ve made.'”

Richie continued:

“You are from a blessed family. I have many messages on my answering machine [from Aretha] that I kept.”

While Katie Perry wanted to know if it was true that the Queen of Soul “kept a little pistol in her purse,” referring to a long-standing rumor about Aretha. Grace told her that wasn’t true, and that her grandmom kept all “the money” in her purse and kept it with her at all times.

Not All Of The Judges’ Were Impressed By Her Performance

Then the pressure was on for Grace to hold her own…just like her iconic grandmother could. She sang Lauryn Hill’s version of “Killing Me Softly.” Luke Bryan said her performance – though on key – was “sleepy and subdued.”

That’s when Perry asked Grace to sing another song. So Grace chose her grandmom’s song, “Ain’t No Way,” which was a better delivery and display of her vocals, but still…Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan were unmoved.

Bryan felt that Grace needed to “add command” to her performance, and therefore voted “No.” Perry completely disagreed with Bryan, telling Grace, “I think you have stardust and sparkle all over you. You are beautiful, and if you’ll trust us, if you’ll listen to us, if you’ll put in the work, I think we can find that next level with you.”

When it came time for Lionel Richie to cast his vote, it was evident that he wasn’t really feelin’ Grace’s performance either. Richie suggested to Grace that she do a little fine tuning on her performance and re-try-out next year:

“I think the best thing for you in life is to take a shot at going backwards. Go back and get a running start and come back at this again,” Richie said.

Katie Perry then got a lil’ frustrated with Richie and Bryan, urging them to give Grace “a shot”:

“Give her a shot, give her a chance!” Perry snapped at Richie. “I’m sure Aretha wasn’t Aretha when she walked into the room, but somebody said, ‘Yes, I want to work with you. I want to develop you.'”

Before briefly walking off the set, Perry continued:

“I will lay down on the ground. I quit this show. I’m going to the bar.”

Ultimately, Grace didn’t make it through to the next round of auditions. However, afterwards, Lionel Richie displayed the same level of compassion he’s oftentimes shown contestants on the show. He walked over to Grace and gave her a hug, while simultaneously encouraging her to try out for “American Idol” next year.

Richie once confessed it would take “miracle” if he can get all of the Commodores to rejoin him again on stage, because two of them were still holding onto the bitter feelings from 30+ years ago.

Commodore, William King, Told It All

Now, we know what the root to all of their bitterness is- Commodores member, William King, laid it ALL out on the table in a 1985 interview he did with L.A. Times, but most people missed this, so here is King’s side of the story as reported in RS:

“I like to think that bitterness is behind me,” said [William] King…forcing a laugh. “I’d love to forget what happened and think nice thoughts about the whole thing. But that’s like living in a fairy tale.”

King still hasn’t forgiven Richie. The problem, King explained, isn’t that Richie left. It’s the way he left. The Commodores were in limbo throughout 1982 while their most valuable member worked on outside projects.

“He kept saying he’d be back,” King recalled, anger in his voice. “First he was coming back after working with Kenny Rogers. Then he had to do Diana Ross. Then he had to do his own album. Meanwhile we couldn’t work. He wouldn’t go on tour. And what promoter would book us without Richie? Would they book the Beatles without Paul McCartney? Richie was our McCartney.

“We weren’t mad because he decided to leave. We were mad at the procrastination. He never called up and said I’m going over there to do this and I won’t be there to work with the group. Not one of the days that he promised to be back did he show up. Finally we had to go on without him.”

Wait, there’s more…King also explained how much Richie’s absence affected their money…

“People gave Richie credit for everything,” King said in an exasperated tone. “The world thinks he produced, arranged and wrote everything we did. We all built that sound. He wrote many of the hits but he didn’t write all of them. But that didn’t matter. People thought he did it all. So when he left nobody wanted to know about us. It was a rude awakening.”

King, the group member closest to Richie, said bitterness about the split hasn’t soured him on his old pal: “We still talk but not as much as we used to. We used to be together all the time. The honest truth is that I miss him very much. I miss the camaraderie we had. I miss the fun we had. The memories of the fun stand out over everything. I’m disappointed that we couldn’t work things out and stay together.”

King revealed that their producer-arranger decided to leave them for Lionel Richie and that just before Richie left the group in 1982, their long time manager, whom King refers to as “the glue” of their group, passed away from a heart attack. All three of those losses left the remaining Commodores in a limbo that forced them to have to keep pushing through their adversity. Nowadays they are successfully continuing to tour and bring the house down everywhere they perform and Lionel Richie is of course still doing his thing also and packing arenas.

Lionel Richie Says A Reunion will Take A “Miracle”

As far as what Richie thinks of all of this, peep what he said in a 2014 Rolling Stone interview about the pending bitterness among them, when asked about a reunion with his Commodores brothers:

Lionel Richie- Believe it or not, it can be hard to get five guys onstage. We lost Milan Williams, the keyboard player, to cancer. Over the years, I’ve experimented with guys. I said, “Let me just get three of them.” We’ve done a couple of shows together. But to get the other two, if I could pull that off, I will be the miracle worker of life.

You have to pull away the 30 years of whatever you are thinking about each other. You have to forget about it and just come on stage.

Then again, when you’re in a group, you have to understand it’s hard to break those old guys. No one cares anymore about whatever you were mad at 30 years ago. No one cares. That’s called the group thing. Every group experiences that stupid kind of paralysis.

This is what happens all too often to groups, but it sounds like all of these dudes have love for each other when it really gets down to it. It’s just like a relationship that ended badly- guards are now up on both sides because no one wants to make themselves vulnerable to getting hurt again. The good thing is that all of the members are able to continue to live life healthy and making a living doing what they are most passionate about. Until they reunite (if ever) we’ll just keep vibin’ to their classics.

ILOSM family, Lionel Richie did an interview with GQ Magazine, and he held nothing back about his sexcapades from back in the day. Richie let the world know that he is not just the “Hello” singer who likes to be romantic with the love of his life…nah, there’s more to him than that.

It turns out the “All Night Long” singer confessed that back in the day, he and his Commodore compadres were trying to go “all night long” with as many women as they could say “Hello” to…LOL. Peep excerpts from Richie’s interview below….

[Lionel Richie] on having a high bed-notch count
“When the touring [with the Commodores] started we knew we were gonna do a hundred shows in as many cities, maybe more, in a year. So we decided: we’re gonna make love to every girl in the world. That was our mission statement.”

On whether he kept score
“No, no, no. I mean…we all kept score, yeah. We were college guys, so we liked stats. And when you start out, it’s madness: there’s one in the morning, one in the afternoon, one in the evening. It’s great. You’re killing it. But all of a sudden you get to the fifth show and you’re, like: Everybody get out of my room! You can’t do it. I don’t care whether you’re 19 and sexually possessed – you can’t do that and put on high-heeled boots and run across the stage every night. That’s why drugs became so inviting: because you get a hit of this, and it gives you the stamina. But how long does it last? And then you’re in rehab, and what kind of bullshit is that? Or you’re falling down on stage and passing out halfway through the show.”

While Lionel doesn’t pretend that he now lives like a preacher (he said “I’m in the love seduction business”) he tells why he started slowing down that period of his life:

“It wasn’t the sex and it wasn’t the drugs. It was babies. Holy shit! The first time you get that phone call when someone says… hey, guess what? That’s called fear, shock and awe. That’s when I realized the gun was loaded, you know what I’m saying?….you start hearing stories from guys in other bands of ‘I went to Philadelphia to meet my kid’, ‘I went to New York to meet my kid.’ That puts the fear into the heart of any 19- or 20-year-old. A lot of guys didn’t care. But fortunately enough, The Commodores had a different standard there. We had some basic ground rules. As much as I would love to think we were dangerous we weren’t as dangerous as the dangerous guys. We were Ivy League funksters as opposed to the hard core.”

On getting pleasure from stories of how he helped get other people get laid
“Y’know something? I get more compliments from men than women. Guys use one word: thanks. ‘The greatest times of my life, Lionel, you were right there, baby.’ Or, ‘Hey, Lionel – I’ve made love to you many times.’ And I’m, like, ‘That’s a lie. I’ve never touched your ass in my life!” It’s the simplicity of the songs, I think, that works. A guy once came up to me and said, ‘Hey, you wrote ‘We Are The World”? You should have called it “I Populated The World”‘ heh-heh-heh-heh-heh!”

Can’t knock Lionel Richie and the rest of the Commodores for what they were doing in their hey day. They were young men, their hormones were running rampant, and they were in a position where every woman of their dreams were offering themselves to them like they were in a Piccadilly’s buffet line.

We’re glad that the Commodores were fortunate enough to have wisdom that steered them in the right direction and didn’t allow their hormones to overshadow their hunger for creating great soul music.

LIONEL AND BRENDA RICHIE LEAPED INTO ACTION TO HELP THEIR BABY

Lionel was about to kick off a huge tour at the time Nicole called him for help and this is what he and then-wife Brenda Richie, did next to help their child:

LR: “I said [to Nicole], ‘I am with you’ and I canceled [my] tour. I said, ‘Me and your mother [Brenda Richie]’ — who didn’t get along that well — ‘Me and your mother are checking into rehab with you.'”

In a people Magazine interview, Nicole detailed what it was like for her to make the decision to quit drug usage altogether:

“I got so much so fast that nothing really excited me anymore. I kind of took matters into my own hands and was creating drama in a very dangerous way. I think I was just bored, and I had seen everything – especially when you’re young, you just want more. At 18 I had just been doing a lot of cocaine.”

By her early 20’s she was addicted to heroin and this is what she says she told herself:

“This isn’t the life … this was heroin.” …”[Now] I’m happy for the things I have accomplished. I’m happy I’m not in that state anymore.”

Lionel Richie admitted that he once thought the role of a dad was to be a provider, so he always made sure he performed and toured to bring home the bread. But after seeing what Nicole went through, he confessed “I think I wasn’t a good dad.”

In response to Lionel’s confession, Nicole stated:

“I never blamed him. I think he blamed himself. It was very humble of my dad to come forward and say, ‘I made a mistake.’ I love him for that.”

This is so inspirational to any parents out there who may be disconnected from their children. It’s never too late to admit your wrongs and try to do right by your child. We applaud Lionel and Nicole Richie for their willingness to share their flaws and vulnerabilities from both ends of the spectrum.

To Lionel Richie’s ex-wife, Brenda Richie, he may not have been ‘Husband of the year’ (we can’t forget about the infamous 80’s fiasco when Brenda allegedly kicked that hotel room door in and turned into Mike Tyson on Lionel and his then-mistress-turned-wife-turned-ex-wife, Diana Alexander), but Lionel sure does earn the ‘Father of the year’ title. In recent years, Sheila E. and Lionel Richie spoke out about the adoption of Sheila’s biological niece, Nicole Richie.

Lionel and Sheila E. told their stories from two conflicting sides of the coin, and here is what they revealed…

In the Huffington Post video above, Lionel Richie spoke with his daughter, Nicole Richie, about why he and Brenda (pictured below) decided to adopt her when she was about 2 years old after meeting her at a Prince concert (this starts at the 3:19 mark of the video). One of the most touching things Lionel spoke on was the “abandonment issues” Nicole displayed as a toddler, that according to him was the result of her being “handed around to every member in the family” and not having a stable home at that time:

Lionel recalls what he told then-toddler Nicole: “I said to you I’m never ever going to leave you’ and you had this lil’ look on your face and I said ‘No, no listen, I’m NEVER going to leave you,'” something Nicole said she clearly remembers.

Lionel Richie continued: “It was very important that you understood that no matter when I went away- if it was two months, or one month, or two weeks…I’m coming right back. And as soon as you realized I think over time that ‘Okay he’s not leaving me, he’s just going to work,’ then I think you felt safer.” Nicole affirmed his assessment that she did finally feel safe, at home, and at peace with her new parents.

As beautiful and honorable as that was for Lionel and Brenda to love Nicole unconditionally and give her stability, it didn’t make the transition any less painful for Sheila E. and her family…although they were extremely grateful.
