Remember when you couldn’t go anywhere without hearing these lyrics blaring through radio speakers? “Been around the world and I-I-I I can’t find my baby, I dont know where I don’t know why, why he’s gone away, I don’t know where he may be, my baby, but I’m gonna find him….”

That was in 1989 when a new England born, ‘blue eyed soul singer’ burst onto the music scene and set R&B on fire with her alto voice and women empowerment themed songs. Women were belting out Lisa Stansfield hits nonstop: “All Woman,” “All Around The World,” etc. Lisa went on to sell 20 million albums, was at the height of her career and just like that, she vanished from the airwaves.

There were several reasons why Lisa Stansfield decided to throw in the towel in the midst of having success that most artists could have only dreamed of. One reason was her take on the new-found fame she received at that time:

“It gets a bit too much sometimes,” she says. “After the third album I was despondent about things. I couldn’t walk down the street without people looking at me. At that time I thought I’d love to not do this. But I’d stop for a month and then I’d feel it again. You can’t help it. It’s in you and you want to get it out. It’s lovely but it’s a curse sometimes.” She laughs.
