I Love Old School Music fam’…guess who’s back and giving us all ’90s vibes nostalgia? It’s the cast of “Martin”. After years of rumors, beef, and love lost, our favorite crew reunited for a hilarious spoof at the 2024 Emmys.

Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold, and Carl Anthony Payne II gathered on the iconic sitcom’s recreated set to present Jeremy Allen White with the Lead Actor award for “The Bear.” But that wasn’t all – they also took the opportunity to give the Emmys a little friendly shade for all the years of snubs they received back in the day.

With a photograph of the late Thomas Mikal Ford placed prominently on the table, they paid homage to their fallen cast member. It was a touching moment that reminded us of the love and camaraderie that made “Martin” so special.

And Carl Anthony Payne II fully embraced his “Cole” character, hilariously assuming they were there to snatch an Emmy, not present one.

Now, we all know that “Martin” has been a staple in the Black households long after it went off the air. But it was Tisha Campbell who dropped the mic when she exposed the fact that their beloved ’90s sitcom won an Emmy. The audience couldn’t help but show some love and appreciation for Tisha’s boldness. Do your thing Tisha!

Let’s take a moment to remember the good old days when “Martin” graced our screens from 1992 to 1996. This show was more than just a sitcom – it was a cultural phenomenon. And they had some killer guest stars too, like The Notorious B.I.G., Method Man, and even Tommy Hearns. Remember that episode with MC Hammer? Well, Carl’s hat at the Emmys was a hilarious nod to that iconic moment!

That brings us to what Martin Lawrence revealed once, and it may bring a tear to your eye…well, it almost did for Martin as he spoke about it. In an interview with The Washington Post, Martin talked about his days as a young broke comedian/actor.

In 1987, he landed his first acting role ever on What’s Happening Now, alongside Shirley and the rest of the cast. But he was hit with a MAJOR bombshell when soon after his joining of the show, it had gotten canceled. Martin was then depressed about the state of his career, or shall we say, the nonexistence of it at that time…and he was dead broke.

Via Washington Post: Lawrence spent a season on [What’s Happening Now], then it was off the air. “I didn’t get any jobs in acting until ‘Do the Right Thing’ came along,” he says. “But that was a little while. So I went, like, broke.

“I remember, I was down to maybe a couple hundred dollars in the bank. And Shirley Hemphill called me and asked me how I was doing.” Hemphill had been a star of “What’s Happening Now!!” “She’s very smart, she invested her money, and Shirley’s just a real good woman,” Lawrence says. “She asked me how was I doing. And I said, ‘Not too good. I didn’t know shows get canceled.’ “

What almost brought Martin to tears:

Via WP: He talked of moving in with someone to cut down on living expenses, but Hemphill tried to talk him out of it. “She was like a big sister: ‘I don’t want you moving in with nobody. You need your privacy.’ And the next day I opened my mailbox and she’d sent me $500.” Lawrence pauses. “Just wanted to cry, man. I never forgot it. Never will. Never will.”

When he asked Hemphill how he could pay her back, “she goes, ‘Look, I just want you to help some other young comic out.’ Richard Pryor helped her out. You know what I’m saying? It’s a chain.”

Years Later Martin Returned The Favor

By the mid-’90s Martin was now a household name with his sitcom – just like Shirley was when she helped him out back in the day. Martin proved that Shirley’s extreme act of kindness and the lesson she taught him did not go unnoticed. He made sure Shirley made a guest appearance on his then highly rated show. She appeared in an hilarious Martin episode, portraying the wife of actor, Hawthorne James’ (“Big Red” from The Five Heartbeats) character.

Martin Lawrence said it best, Shirley Hemphill was just a good woman. May she forever rest in peace after the beautiful job she’s done.

We’ve all heard rumors surrounding tension on the set of the Martin sitcom back in the day, but the rumors we mostly remember hearing were about how Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell couldn’t get along whatsoev.’ We never really heard that there was some major tension between actor, Carl Payne (“Cole) and Martin. So much so, that they were going at it on many occasions while on set, and Carl has now confirmed that.

In a prior interview with host, Jack Thriller, of ThisIs50.com, Carl let the cat outta the bag about what was really happening between them behind the scenes of the Martin sitcom. Read some of what he said below.

Carl Payne: “We Had A Lotta Tense Days On Set”

Carl said that at first he didn’t have a problem with Martin, but once Martin started doing some foul things to him, then he developed an issue with him and their tension lasted pretty much for the duration of the show.

“You know it’s no secret, we had a lotta tense days on the set…we had a LOT of tense days on the set. I live by a certain code of ethics, I from Harlem, you know how we do.”

Carl continued:

“Yeah we had issues, he [Martin Lawrence] had issues with himself really. I think he was battling his own demons, you know what I’m saying? I wish him nothing but the best, hopefully he’s better now, in a better place. I don’t think he was in a good place at that time and that’s pretty much it. It was a great place to work for a long time and then it became a not so great place to work. I keep it professional as long as I can, until you step over that line. You cross the line and you come at me in a way that I can’t sleep at night, or [if] I feel like you’re threatening me, then it’s a different story…period.

We were all like family…and sometimes families fight…families get down you know what I mean and I enjoyed myself to the fullest when we were doing it [filming the show], all of it.”

So, was Carl saying that Martin was threatening him? Wow, things got that heated?!!

The nail in the coffin was when the interviewer acknowledged that we’d all heard rumors about why the Martin show really went off the air, but that he also understood that we shouldn’t believe everything we here. Jack Thriller was alluding to the rumors about past tension between Martin and Tisha Campbell, as well as Martin’s alleged drug use at that time. Carl immediately responded by saying, “You should” believe the aforementioned rumors. In other words, they were apparently all facts.

Beef Squashed Decades Later, After Tommy’s Passing

Carl recently revealed that he and Martin had not spoken in many years, but in 2018 the passing of their dear friend/former Martin cast-mate, Tommy Ford, led to their cordial reunion at his funeral.

And there you have it people. Who would have ever thought “Cole” and “Martin” were beefin’ behind the scenes. Now that we know the real deal, we give them a big hand clap for doing a helluva job on the show and convincing us that they were cool as a fan. So glad they’ve finally let bygones be bygones.

Twenty-three years ago — when Martin Lawrence and Eddie Murphy co-starred in the 1999 film, Life — they probably never in a million years would’ve imagined that their kids would fall madly with each other decades later. But, welp…here we are, and thus far the union of Martin’s daughter, Jasmin Lawrence; and Eddie’s son, Eric Murphy, has been a beautiful thing to witness. So much so, that Martin is apparently already foreseeing the two jumpin’ the broom in the future…we’ll explain in a minute. Anywho…meet the happy couple below…

Meet The Happy Couple – Martin’s Daughter & Eddie’s Son

Check out the happy couple, Jasmin Murphy (26) and Eric Murphy (33). These two lovebirds have gone public with their relationship within the past year or so, and are clearly head over hills for each other. That fact is evident in the lovey-dovey social media posts they share every now and then.

They officially went public in 2021, although it flew under the radar. Eric kicked it off by sharing the photo above of himself with Jasmine, and he captioned his post with this:

Eric Murphy – “Head over heels in LOVE with YOU @jasmin_lawrence ❤️❤️❤️❤️ #myotherhalf #equallyyoked #iloveyou”

Jasmine soon followed her man’s lead, and a few weeks later she posted the photo below, along with this caption:

Jasmin Lawrence – “Happy birthday, my love! I’m so incredibly blessed to know you, to love you, and to have you by my side. Cheers to many more blessings, laughs, and beautiful memories! I love you so much!! 🖤✨”

More recently, Eric went in with is love display for Jasmin, when he wrote this heartfelt birthday post on her 26th b-day recently:

I pray that God blesses you abundantly as you enter your 26th year. You have made my life better than I ever thought it could be. You embody everything I ever prayed for in a significant other. How Do Martin And Eddie Feel About Their Kids Dating Each Other?

Although Martin and Eddie are mostly radio silent about their kids’ love-lives, Martin gave recently offered some insight into how they really feel about Jasmine and Eric’s union. While appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live in July 2022, Martin confessed that he and Eddie “kinda just stay out of their [kids’] business” and “let them do their own thing, and respect their thing.”

Although Martin says he and Eddie have yet to discuss their kids’ union, they seem to be cool with it. He also jokingly said he’s gonna do away with tradition if their kids marry each other…confessing, “I’m gonna try to get Eddie to pay for it.”

Wedding Bells In Their Future? She Just Caught Sister’s Bouquet

It’s unclear if Eric will be puttin’ a ring on it anytime soon, but he’s apparently droppin’ clues that that is the direction they’re headed.

When Eddie’s other daughter, Bria Murphy (daughter of Nicole Murphy), recently got married (in July 2022), guess who caught the bouquet?

That’s right…Martin’s daughter, Jasmine, caught Bria’s bouquet…and Eric made sure to point that out in this celebratory post:

Eric Murphy – “I am overwhelmed with joy celebrating my sister Bria, and her husband Michael’s wedding. I am so extremely happy for you both! Yesterday was such a beautiful day!! Special shout out to Jas for catching the bouquet 💐👀😉❤️ Also, thank you all so much for all of the birthday wishes today. MUCH LOVE 💛🖤”

Don’t know about y’all, but from my viewpoint, all of the stars seem to be aligning for Jasmin Lawrence and Eric Murphy to take their relationship to the next level. Wishing them the best!

We all have done things at some point or another in our lives that we regret — some are big regrets and some are not so big — but the fact of the matter is that most of us have them. Rick James was no different…and although he lived his colorful life unapologetically, there was one mistake he wished he could take back. It involved his beloved mother.

Rick James’ Big Regret

In his memoir, “Glow,” the “Superfreak” hitmaker confessed the following:

“I had OD’d in Buffalo and was rushed to the hospital where the doctors quickly brought me back to life. I was kept there for observation. Without warning, I decided to get up and leave. My Mom had come to the hospital to stop me from leaving. When she saw me getting dressed to leave, we got into a yelling match. I pushed my Mom to the floor just to get her out of my way. As I looked down and saw my beautiful little mother on the floor, I knew my life was terribly, terribly wrong. I never forgave myself for that moment.”                                    

James’ mother died shortly thereafter. The death of his mom so depressed him that he revealed he’d become a recluse in his own bedroom, and lost himself in drugs.

Other Celebs Who’ve Confessed Regretful Moments

Rick James as we all know, is by far not the only superstar to have  as a result of drugs. Many celebs have unfortunately had their moments, such as Martin Lawrence, or George Clinton, for example.

Remember Martin Lawrence’s situation after he’d admittedly smoked some bad weed? He was subsequently caught by police walking the street stripped down, in a delusional state as a result. A witness, who said he was an acquaintance of Lawrence, said the actor was cursing, waving his hands and yelling, “Fight the establishment!” Martin reportedly ran out onto a busy street when police arrived and tried to fight them off when they attempted to restrain him.

Heavy drug use was common for a touring funk band during the 1970s…but for George “P-Funk” Clinton, it was crack that took the biggest toll on him. He once spent a night in jail with Sly Stone after being busted for possession in a Denny’s parking lot.

In his book, George Clinton also recalled an incident when a then-teenage Chelsea Clinton (Bill and Hillary Clinton’s daughter) went backstage after his concert to take a photo with him (shown above). For George, that didn’t go so smoothly. Startled by the Secret Service, the P-Funk legend said that he was forced to conceal a red-hot crack pipe in one hand while shaking the then-first daughter’s hand with the other. He’s been clean for several decades years now and regrets his heavy drug use of yesteryear.

George Clinton also has a whole new outlook on life: “One of the best things about getting off crack is not waking up in the morning and thinking about where you’re gonna get it,” he concludes.

Moral of the story is: life comes at us fast…but the beauty is in the wisdom we gain from the mistakes we’ve made — that’s priceless.

Martin Lawrence, as we all know, is a helluva comedian. Behind the scenes, he’s also one to stand behind what he believes…that was apparent when he found out that NBC had completely banned him from appearing on their network following one of his raunchy sets on “Saturday Night Live” back in the day. You see, it all started with the topic of women’s hygiene, and apparently it went downhill from there, at least in NBC’s opinion it did. However, to this day, Martin couldn’t care less. Let us explain…

What Had Happened Was…

On February 19, 1994 Martin Lawrence made his first and last appearance on ‘Saturday Night Live.” How come? Because he’d said some things that revealed his opinion about some females’ hygiene, and he used a whole lot of curse words while saying it. He was live on-air on SNL and most of his monologue was ultimately wiped out. This must have been really bad because here’s the statement that was released by SNL when they re-broadcasted the show in it’s edited state:

“At this point in his monologue, Martin begins a commentary on what he considers the decline in standards of feminine hygiene in this country. Although we at Saturday Night Live take no stand on this issue one way or the other, network policy prevents us from re-broadcasting this portion of his remarks.

In summary, Martin feels, or felt at the time, that the failure of many young women to bathe thoroughly is a serious problem that demands our attention. He explores this problem, citing numerous examples from his personal experience, and ends by proposing several imaginative solutions.”

At the time of SNL’s statement, it was then reported that Martin had been ‘banned for life’ from ever appearing on the show again. But it wasn’t until recently, during an interview with “The Breakfast Club,” that Martin cleared up that report. Though he wasn’t banned from SNL per se, he was in fact banned from NBC, the network home of SNL. So, in essence he was still banned from SNl at that time. But there’s more…

Martin also revealed that NBC eventually reneged on their banning of him [likely after realizing that damn near everything Martin had his hands on at that time was a straight up money-maker for all involved, and they probably didn’t want to miss future opportunities]. Anywho, check out what Martin said during his interview:

When The Breakfast Club asked him about the NBC ban, Martin jokingly said, ‘“I don’t give a damn.’ He continued, “I’m not banned from SNL. They banned me from NBC at the time for a minute. But then they realized the way it went down wasn’t what they thought and then they sent me an apology letter.”

Martin them explained why he will always follow his heart when it comes to his art:

“I don’t compromise my comedy. I never did in the past,” he said. “When I put out ‘You So Crazy’ they wanted me to water in down and give it an R rating and I took an NC-17 just so I can say what I wanted to say.”

And there you have it ILOSM fam’…Marty-Mar said what he said. So, here’s a message for the major corporations looking to censor Martin Lawrence next time: *in my P. Diddy voice* “Take dat, take dat, take dat.”

As he recalled during a prior interview on Netflix’s “Strong Black Lead,” Garrett Morris’ end on Martin might have happened quite abruptly — to say the least. Even while Garrett Morris was in a particularly troubled situation, allegedly there was no sympathy for the actor.

Remember When ‘Stan’ Was Hospitalized?…

Well, it really happened. According to the source, in 1994, Garrett Morris was robbed in real-life. During the robbery, he was shot and hospitalized.

NOTE: This happened during Martin‘s second season. Did you ever notice how you saw less of “Stan”?

Supposedly, they tried to make the situation work. However, Morris ended up missing several episodes of the show due to his injuries.

“So while he was recovering in the hospital, he shot a few scenes to tie up his storyline with the reason being that Stan was about to undergo plastic surgery to escape the IRS,” Jasmine Brand mentions.

Likewise, in season three, he made one more appearance on the show before totally disappearing. But why would he phase out like that?

It Happened While In The Hospital…

If you thought it was wild that Ice Cube’s “Craig” got fired on his day off, imagine actually getting fired while recovering from a gunshot wound. This is what Garrett Morris says happened to him.

The actor — in an exclusive with Netflix‘s Strong Black Lead, a show geared toward shining examples in the Black community — says Martin Lawrence didn’t do the things he told reporters regarding his incident.

According to Morris, Martin said he was by Garrett’s bedside in tears. Yet, the actor basically says Lawrence is stretching. The source quotes Morris as follows.

“The man who produced ‘Martin’ was basically Martin Lawrence. After I had no bad words with him, still to this day, I do not understand why he decided to fire me. While I was in Daniel Freeman Hospital.”

“Not only did he fire me when I was in the hospital itself, but then went around telling people in interviews that he came and sat by my bed and cried and stuff like that,” Garrett Morris continues.

The source also notes that publications have reached out to Martin for a comment on Morris’ statements. However, the pending Bad Boys for Life actor hasn’t responded.
