I Love Old School Music fam’…guess who’s back and giving us all ’90s vibes nostalgia? It’s the cast of “Martin”. After years of rumors, beef, and love lost, our favorite crew reunited for a hilarious spoof at the 2024 Emmys.

Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Tichina Arnold, and Carl Anthony Payne II gathered on the iconic sitcom’s recreated set to present Jeremy Allen White with the Lead Actor award for “The Bear.” But that wasn’t all – they also took the opportunity to give the Emmys a little friendly shade for all the years of snubs they received back in the day.

With a photograph of the late Thomas Mikal Ford placed prominently on the table, they paid homage to their fallen cast member. It was a touching moment that reminded us of the love and camaraderie that made “Martin” so special.

And Carl Anthony Payne II fully embraced his “Cole” character, hilariously assuming they were there to snatch an Emmy, not present one.

Now, we all know that “Martin” has been a staple in the Black households long after it went off the air. But it was Tisha Campbell who dropped the mic when she exposed the fact that their beloved ’90s sitcom won an Emmy. The audience couldn’t help but show some love and appreciation for Tisha’s boldness. Do your thing Tisha!

Let’s take a moment to remember the good old days when “Martin” graced our screens from 1992 to 1996. This show was more than just a sitcom – it was a cultural phenomenon. And they had some killer guest stars too, like The Notorious B.I.G., Method Man, and even Tommy Hearns. Remember that episode with MC Hammer? I LOVE OLD SCOOL MUSIC family, we have a few pretty interesting fun facts to share with you, and it involves three children of two legends we greatly respect. That would be none other than New Edition legend, Bobby Brown, and legendary actor, Carl Payne.

At first glance, one would think they have no real reason for being mentioned in the same sentence, given that Carl was best known for crackin’ us up on Martin and The Cosby Show; while Bobby was best known for cuttin’ up on stage. Well, what you’re about to witness, is the one factor they both have in common- they each have grown sons with the same woman. By the way, their sons are making the ladies break a sweat all on their own with their looks. You’ll see what we mean in a minute.

Melika’s and Bobby’s Son [Carl’s Step-son] Spoke About Bobbi Kristina’s Boyfriend

After Bobbi Kristina passed away– and prior to her boyfriend, Nick Gordon’s, death — Landon expressed his hurt and anger in an interview with Vlad TV:

“Nick Gordon is a leach he is a tag-along, he is a weak individual that can’t do for himself. … They were just friends from school [and they only got into a relationship] after her Mother passes away, that’s a bit suspicious.”

As you all know, just five years after the passing of Bobby’s and Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, in July 2015…Bobby also lost his son, Bobby Brown Jr. [from a previous relationship], to an accidental drug overdose on November 18, 2020. The N.E. legend has endured so much heartache throughout the years, but we applaud Bobby for still going strong for the sake of his other children and loved ones.

We’ve all heard rumors surrounding tension on the set of the Martin sitcom back in the day, but the rumors we mostly remember hearing were about how Martin Lawrence and Tisha Campbell couldn’t get along whatsoev.’ We never really heard that there was some major tension between actor, Carl Payne (“Cole) and Martin. So much so, that they were going at it on many occasions while on set, and Carl has now confirmed that.

In a prior interview with host, Jack Thriller, of ThisIs50.com, Carl let the cat outta the bag about what was really happening between them behind the scenes of the Martin sitcom. Read some of what he said below.

Carl Payne: “We Had A Lotta Tense Days On Set”

Carl said that at first he didn’t have a problem with Martin, but once Martin started doing some foul things to him, then he developed an issue with him and their tension lasted pretty much for the duration of the show.

“You know it’s no secret, we had a lotta tense days on the set…we had a LOT of tense days on the set. I live by a certain code of ethics, I from Harlem, you know how we do.”

Carl continued:

“Yeah we had issues, he [Martin Lawrence] had issues with himself really. I think he was battling his own demons, you know what I’m saying? I wish him nothing but the best, hopefully he’s better now, in a better place. I don’t think he was in a good place at that time and that’s pretty much it. It was a great place to work for a long time and then it became a not so great place to work. I keep it professional as long as I can, until you step over that line. You cross the line and you come at me in a way that I can’t sleep at night, or [if] I feel like you’re threatening me, then it’s a different story…period.

We were all like family…and sometimes families fight…families get down you know what I mean and I enjoyed myself to the fullest when we were doing it [filming the show], all of it.”

So, was Carl saying that Martin was threatening him? Wow, things got that heated?!!

The nail in the coffin was when the interviewer acknowledged that we’d all heard rumors about why the Martin show really went off the air, but that he also understood that we shouldn’t believe everything we here. Jack Thriller was alluding to the rumors about past tension between Martin and Tisha Campbell, as well as Martin’s alleged drug use at that time. Carl immediately responded by saying, “You should” believe the aforementioned rumors. In other words, they were apparently all facts.

Beef Squashed Decades Later, After Tommy’s Passing

Carl recently revealed that he and Martin had not spoken in many years, but in 2018 the passing of their dear friend/former Martin cast-mate, Tommy Ford, led to their cordial reunion at his funeral.

And there you have it people. Who would have ever thought “Cole” and “Martin” were beefin’ behind the scenes. Now that we know the real deal, we give them a big hand clap for doing a helluva job on the show and convincing us that they were cool as a fan. So glad they’ve finally let bygones be bygones.

She Lives A Very Private Lifestyle:

Her name is Simbi Khali, born down south in Jackson, Mississippi and now she’s 50 years old living a pretty low-key lifestyle. After the “Martin” show, she did a few appearances on “3rd Rock from the Sun” and “The Bernie Mac Show.” In more recent years, Simbi appeared in several short films, including 2020’s “Buck” and “-Ship: A Visual Poem.”

Meet Simbi’s Ex-Husband, Cress Williams

One thing that was a surprise to use here at ILOSM, is that she was married to a very popular 90s actor. We all know his face, but many of us never knew his name. His name’s Cress Williams (51), and we know him mostly as being the boyfriend of Queen Latifah’s character on “Living Single”.

He and Simbi Khali were married from 2000-2011. They didn’t have any kids during the marriage, but it seems the marriage ended privately and amicably.

Cress Williams has been extra hot on the TV drama scene, he had a recurring role as “Cole Guthrie” on the HBO series, “Code Black.” Cress is also the main character in CW Network’s hit series, “Black Lightning,” a drama pilot from Greg Berlanti, who’s also responsible for the “Being Mary Jane” duo of Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil.

According to the LATimes, Cress Williams tied the knot in 2013 with Kristen Torrianni.

“The wedding was an intimate affair on the beach, with the bride’s and groom’s parents and Cress’ daughter in attendance,” Williams’ rep said. “After getting married in Kauai, they stayed and honeymooned there for nine more days.”

LATimes reports that he met his new wife in 2006, while still married to Simbi. They met at the church they attended, and became closer friends when they started hosting a weekly dinner party together.

Seems that Cress has a broad taste in women. We’re all for diversifying, but many of Cress’ Black female fans have expressed disappointment solely because his current wife is not Black, and others are wondering how his taste in women suddenly became so diverse…

What most people don’t know is that Cress Williams was born in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to American parents. The way race is viewed here in America, is oftentimes different in other countries- with less racial barriers. So could that be the case for Cress Williams? Maybe…and also maybe not. That’s an answer only he can give.

What Bruh-Man Is Doing Now…And His Big Announcement

Big news! Reginald recently announced that the “Martin” reunion show is in the works and the cast is apparently filming now. On his Instagram page, the “Martin” veteran was seated in front of the famous window that “Bruh-Man” oftentimes climbed through to creep into Martin’s and Gina’s crib unannounced. In addition to the “Martin” reunion, Reginald has been heavily active on the stand-up comedy circuit and has toured across the country. In recent years, he starred in a stage play about late singer, Gerald Levert’s, life, titled, “Baby Hold On To Me”…which also starred Gerald’s father, Eddie Levert; and singers, Monifah and Alyson Williams. Another gig that had folks talking was Reginald’s feature in rapper, Big Sean’s, video, which was a rap parody of the Martin TV sitcom. Check him out in that video below (Graphic language):

Reginald revealed, in an interview with Laff House TV, that he initially didn’t want to be a comedian, but that it was comedian, J. Anthony Brown, who sparked that comic itch in him when he asked Reginald to introduce the comedians for a show at a Houston, TX comedy club J. Anthony owned.

Prior to making a name for himself on Martin, Reginald had roles in other TV shows and films, such as Class Act (starring Kid N’ Play), the TV show, True Colors, and he was even in Menace 2 Society. Can you imagine “Bruh-Man” rolling with “O-Dog” and “Caine”? I can’t either, but he was and he did his thing.

His Favorite “Martin” Episode Helped Martin When He Was Down

Reginald says his favorite “Bruh-Man” episode was one that seemed like a real-life heartfelt message he was gave to Martin, as Martin was “going through some things” in his personal life at the time. All of the cast and staff knew that Martin was going through some struggles at the time, and Reginald said that scene really hit home for Martin:

Reginald Ballard – “My favorite ‘Bruh-Man’ episode…it really wasn’t that much acting…it’s when I had the dream of the sandwiches and uh…when we walked, when I was leaving out I said [to Martin] ‘Hey man, you need to get you some rest man you look beat down,’ and we really had a moment right there because that’s when Martin was going through some things. And the producers were like ‘Yo, say man, it look like you really was telling him (Martin) you know, he need to slow down.’ And he (Martin) looked at me, he was like “yeah, yeah…” and that was like a real catching type moment.”

“Bruh-Man” is a married man also, Reginald’s been with his wife for approximately three decades.

-Reginald was a football player all throughout high school in Galveston, TX and he earned a full scholarship to play linebacker at Southern Methodist University, where he majored in theatre and then he transferred to the University of Missouri and continued to act and play football.

What most people don’t know is that Cress Williams was born in Heidelberg, Baden-Württemberg, Germany, to American parents. The way race is viewed here in America, is oftentimes different in other countries- with less racial barriers. So could that be the case for Cress Williams? Maybe…and also maybe not. That’s an answer only he can give.

We hate to see that he and actress, Simbi Khali, had to end their 11 year marriage, but sometimes, such is life. Wishing Cress and his wife, Kristen, all the best. Also can’t wait to see Simbi Khali back on the screen again, her talent is much too underrated.

We could never forget “Bruh-Man” from the 5th Flo'” on the Martin Show. The way he used to climb through Martin’s and Gina’s window to fix himself a “breh-fuss sammich” and then would tell Martin “Yo Moms in my apaaatment” always stole the show and had us crackin’ up nonstop. We were having a 90’s flashback session here at ILoveOldSchoolMusic, and there’s no way we could talk about 90s sitcoms, without talking about “Bruh-Man”, the character that was played by actor/comedian, Reginald Ballard. Check out what he’s been up to below…

What Bruh-Man Is Doing Now

Recently Reginald Ballard has been heavily active on the stand up comedy circuit and has been touring across the country and he recently starred in a theatrical stage play about late singer, Gerald Levert’s life (which also starred Eddie Levert and singers, Monifah and Alyson Williams) called “Baby Hold On To Me.” Another gig that had folks talking in was Reginald’s feature in rapper, Big Sean’s, video, which was a rap parody of the Martin TV sitcom. Reginald actually revealed, in an interview with Laff House TV, that he initially didn’t want to be a comedian, but that it was comedian, J. Anthony Brown, who sparked that comic itch in him when he asked Reginald to introduce the comedians for a show at a Houston, TX comedy club J. Anthony owned.

Prior to making a name for himself on Martin, Reginald had roles in other TV shows and films, such as Class Act (starring Kid N’ Play), the TV show, True Colors, and he was even in Menace 2 Society. Can you imagine “Bruh-Man” rolling with “O-Dog” and “Caine”? I can’t either, but he was and he did his thing.

Reginald revealed that his favorite “Bruh-Man” episode was an episode that was like a real life heartfelt message he was giving to Martin when Martin was “going through some things” in his personal life that the public didn’t know about at the time. All of the cast and staff knew that Martin was going through some struggles though and a message Reginald gave him through his character while he and Martin were filming a scene really hit home for Martin. Here is what Reginald said about that:

“My favorite ‘Bruh-Man’ episode…it really wasn’t that much acting…it’s when I had the dream of the sandwiches and uh…when we walked, when I was leaving out I said [to Martin] ‘Hey man, you need to get you some rest man you look beat down,’ and we really had a moment right there because that’s when Martin was going through some things. And the producers were like ‘Yo, say man, it look like you really was telling him (Martin) you know, he need to slow down.’ And he (Martin) looked at me, he was like “yeah, yeah…” and that was like a real catching type moment.”

A Few More Facts We Learned About Reginald a.k.a. “Bruh-Man”:

– “Bruh-Man” is a family man in real life…
“Bruh-Man” is a married man also, Reginald’s been with his wife for 27 years…

Reginald Ballard has two adult children- a son and a daughter.

-Reginald was a football player all throughout high school in Galveston, TX and he earned a full scholarship to play linebacker at Southern Methodist University, where he majored in theatre and then he transferred to the University of Missouri and continued to act and play football.

It’s always a beautiful thing to see entertainers from back in the day still grinding and doing what they love. Reginald is a good example of that and we can’t wait to see where his acting and comedic skills take him next.
