We’re gonna put this out there before we even get into this story: Here at ILOSM, we do not care if a person is gay, straight, bisexual, purple, has three eyes and a kick stand for a leg. To us, people are people and it is the content of a person’s character that we prefer to judge one by. We salute the late, great Marvin Gaye for standing in his truth and letting the world know what you are about to read. We think that a story like this gives many lessons in tolerance and understanding. With that said, let’s get into the sexual revelation Marvin revealed to his autobiographer, David Ritz, in Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye…

Star athlete-turned transgender, Caitlyn Jenner (formerly Bruce Jenner), wasn’t the only famous ‘straight’ male cross-dresser, so was our beloved Marvin Gaye. The “Sexual Healing” soul singer stated that he was not gay. However, he publicly revealed the following cross-dressing-revelation himself…although many people missed it back in the day.

In 1982, Marvin Gaye revealed these secrets about himself and his Dad in his autobiography:

“My father likes to wear women’s clothing. As you well know, that doesn’t mean he’s homosexual. In fact, my father was always known as a ladies’ man. He simply likes to dress up. What he does in private, I really don’t know-nor do I care to know,” Marvin Gaye confessed in his autobiography.

He continued:

“There have been periods when his hair was very long and curled under, and when he seemed quite adamant in showing the world the girlish side of himself. That may have been to further embarrass me. I find the situation all the more difficult because, to tell you the truth, I have the same fascination with women’s clothes. In my case, that has nothing to do with any attraction for men. Sexually, men interest me. But seeing myself as a woman is something that intrigues me. It’s also something I fear. I indulge myself only at the most discreet and intimate moments. Afterward, I must bear the guilt and shame for weeks. After all, indulgence of the flesh is wicked, no matter what your kick. The hot stuff is lethal. I’ve never been able to stay away from the hot stuff.” – Marvin Gaye

Shame and guilt haunted Marvin as a child:

“I wanted to beat the sh*t out of the guys when they teased me about father,” Marvin said. “I wanted to smash their faces and cut their throats, but I was afraid. I suppose I was afraid that I was just like him-that I was too much of a woman to fight back. Instead of taking my blows like a man, I ran. My main memories have to do with running. And believe me, I was fast. I loved sports, and I always felt that I had great athletic ability-football, basketball, you name it-but I was scared of the confrontations, so I backed off.”

Did Marvin believe his father was homosexual?

“I didn’t know. I didn’t want to know. I just drove the thought out of my mind,” Marvin revealed.

Mrs. Alberta Gay (Marvin’s mother) had this to say when asked if she thought her husband, Marvin’s dad was homosexual:

“I’m not certain. I do know that five of his siblings were homosexual. And it’s true that he liked soft clothing. Soft things of all kinds attracted him. He liked to wear my panties, my shoes, my gowns, even my nylon hose. Marvin would see him like that sometimes.” – Alberta Gaye 

As you can see, Marvin had some internal conflict that was seemingly implanted in him without his consent –whether it was a genetic inheritance from his father, or a learned set of behaviors from his father– it doesn’t sound like Marvin actually wanted it.

Nevertheless, he dealt with it the best way that he knew how…and truth be told, Marvin Gaye, the icon, became one of the bravest artists in entertainment. In fact, he proved to have the courage of 1000 lions, by publicly disclosing such personal information at that time. He was Marvin Gaye–m the man who women all over the world were going crazy over, the man that the fellas looked up to for his swag, and the artist whose classic hits music lovers couldn’t get enough of. To risk all of that, is a display of bravery beyond what many could ever imagine. Job well done Marvin Gaye, your days of ‘running’ were over a very long time ago. Rest on.

In a prior interview, Nona Gaye and her mom, Janis Gaye said Rick James stepped up after his friend, Marvin Gaye’s, untimely death. Nona Gaye was 9 when Marvin was killed by his father. Both she and mom credit Rick James with saving their lives, getting Jan off of drugs and treating them like ‘gold.’ Shocking, considering Rick James’ lifestyle. With Marvin leaving no will and the IRS and creditors hounding the family, Nona said Rick was the one person they could count on for money. She says he literally saved their lives.

“After my husband was killed, I slipped into heavy drugs,” says Janis. “I was very depressed. I wanted to just die like him.” She credits Rick for sending them to a clinic to get cleaned up. According to her, “Rick said your life will be better for it.” The strange thing about it was she said it was crazy because Rick was one person she used to get high with. Now he was changing their lives. By the early 90s, James’ career had stalled and only Teena Marie could deal with him and his habit. But Rick kicked it and tried to save a few others. This is proof that things aren’t always what they seem on the outside. Just when you think you know a person, they sometimes shock you. Outside of the drugs, the alcohol, and wild sex stories, this shows that Rick was still a man of character beneath it all.

Nona Gaye also spoke on how she always saw her Dad (Marvin Gaye) and mother, Jan, do drugs and knew they had a problem. Then, like parents, like child – she unfortunately started doing drugs too at 14 and eventually would do them with her Mom.

Through all of that, Nona was still able find success on film, rather than following the career path of her late father, Marvin Gaye (1939–84). Nona Gaye made one record in the early 1990s before vanishing into years of substance abuse. Becoming a parent herself in 1997 forced her into a healthier lifestyle, and she began earning notice for her small, but well-executed supporting roles in films such as Ali and The Gospel. She also replaced Aaliyah in the two Matrix sequels after our beloved Aaliyah sadly passed away in a plane crash.

Gaye and her younger brother grew up in New York City, Los Angeles, and Ostende, Belgium, where their father had settled for tax reasons. The marriage between her parents, which lasted from 1977 to 1981, was a troubled one, and both had substance abuse problems, but the extreme love Marvin and Jan had for one another seems to still be there even after Marvin’s passing.

Marvin Gaye’s son has just apparently said he’s ‘got to give it up’ when it comes to his seemingly drama-filled marriage to wife, Wendy Gaye. Word on the Old school curb is that the R&B legend’s son trekked on down to the courthouse to file divorce papers, and this comes just two months after Marvin III was arrested for domestic violence.

Although Marvin and Wendy have been together for some years now (how many years isn’t clear, since Marvin listed their marriage date as TBD…whatever that means), it’s likely become quite clear to him that their once happy union has become too toxic for them both.

It was just back in January, when Wendy reportedly called the po-po’s on her hubby, claiming Marvin III laid hands on not only her, but her cousin as well, inside their Calabasas, CA home. According to Wendy’s DV filing at that time, she claimed Marvin III grabbed her by her neck, while simultaneously lifting her up off the ground. She also claimed that when her cousin stepped in to help her, Marvin supposedly physically attacked them both, and pointed a gun at them…says Wendy.

Needless to say, cops were called, but it wasn’t until the next day that Marvin III turned himself into police custody. He was hit with two charges– felony assault with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor domestic violence. He ultimately was released after posting a $50K bond. It’s unclear where those charges stand today.

Fast forward to present-day, and Marvin III is ready to call it quits on his marriage. According to his divorce filing, Marvin simply listed “irreconcilable differences” as his reason for opting to divorce Wendy. He’s also reportedly requesting that the court block Wendy from receiving any future spousal support.

When it comes to further dividing up any profits he and his siblings, Nona and Frankie Gaye, have seen from their Pop’s post-humous earnings/royalties, it sounds like Marvin Gaye III ain’t having that.

If reality TV would have existed back in the day, Marvin Gaye and his then-wife, Janis Gaye, would have garnered ratings that were through the roof. Their colorful escapades -and in this case, their sexscapades- make today’s reality shows look like Sesame Street in comparison.

In case you missed it, Jan released a memoir in May 2015, titled “After the Dance: My Life With Marvin Gaye” and a lot of the details she revealed are mind blowing! One of the things Jan disclosed was her alleged affair with R&B legends, Frankie Beverly and Teddy Pendergrass; Lawd…she told it all.

That Time Frankie Beverly Crawled Away From Her…Literally

According to Janis, Marvin loved to see her get busy with other men and/or couples in the bedroom. He was 15 years her senior and was the dominating factor within their relationship. Then along came her fling with Frankie Beverly that had both and odd beginning and ending. Marvin apparently arranged a hotel hookup between his wife and Frankie:

Via DailyMail- Noting a chemistry between Janis and Maze singer, Frankie Beverly, Gaye did everything he could to set up an illicit liaison between the two. When Beverly came for a visit, Gaye not only booked him a room at a local motel but booked the adjoining room for Janis, saying he needed her out of the house so he could focus on music.

As Janis and Beverly smoked a joint in Janis’ hotel room, well aware of the awkwardness, there was a loud bang at the door. It was Gaye, seemingly hoping to catch them in the act. Beverly crawled back to his room on his hands and knees, and Gaye found Janis alone.

Wife Explains Why She Cheated With Frankie & Teddy P.

The visual of the cool-calm-collected Frankie Beverly, crawling outta that hotel room is entertaining, I must admit. Anywho, that hookup didn’t go as apparently planned, but Janis said she began having a sexual affair with Frankie Beverly AND Teddy Pendergrass at the SAME time behind Marvin Gaye’s back! Here’s what she said:

Via NYPost: Soon after Jan and Marvin married in October 1977, he was once again telling her that he loved her but was not in love with her. Gaye — now almost 40 — complained to his 22-year-old wife about her sagging breasts and her stretch marks, explaining, “There’s a big difference between pleasure and excitement. As a man, I can’t help but seek excitement.”

“I was barely 22,” she writes, “yet was convinced that I had lost my youth forever.”

They had vicious fights, including one time when Gaye, behind the wheel with both kids in the car, began to swerve and threatened to “drive this thing off the road!” […]

In time, torn by Gaye’s cruel treatment, Jan slept with [Frankie] Beverly and also hooked up with Teddy Pendergrass, Gaye’s main musical rival.

[Jan revealed she snorted cocaine with Teddy P. and one night when they were out on a date, a jealous Marvin sat outside the restaurant they were in and stalked them. Jan believes she was sleeping with Teddy and Frankie Beverly because she was acting out of anger at Marvin.]

The Violence

Then things turned violent, according to Jan:

Via NYPost: Gaye’s jealousy turned violent. One day, high on a blend of psychedelic mushrooms and cocaine, he started to talk about Jan’s betrayals and became “enraged.”

“He took a kitchen knife and put it to my throat,” she writes. “I was petrified, paralyzed. I thought it was all over.”

Gaye told her, “I’ve loved you too much. This love is killing me. I beg you to provoke me. Provoke me right now so I can take us both out of our misery.”

It’s clear to see that Marvin Gaye had his flaws and so did his wife, Jan Gaye. They are perfect examples of children who were broken, growing up and becoming broken adults. When Marvin sang, he sang from a place that sounded much like his life – painful and passionate.

Sounds like Marvin Gaye was also a good example of what we always say here at ILOSM: Celebrities have accomplished great things, but that doesn’t make them perfect people, it simply makes them perfectly flawed human beings- just like the rest of us. We love us some Marvin Gaye, here at ILOSM…but by now, we’ve all heard about the many struggles that plagued the late icon’s life. Some of them were not his doing and some of them were caused by his own personal demons, as Marvin himself has even confessed. But there’s one vital part of his life that many do not know, and that is the reportedly true biological bloodline of he and Anna Gordy’s (Berry Gordy’s sister) adopted son, Marvin Gaye III. Typically, we aren’t too surprised by what we learn about Marvin anymore, but this one tripped us out.

According to historian/author, Michael Eric Dyson’s biography, “Mercy, Mercy Me: The Art, Loves and Demons of Marvin Gaye,” as well as author, Steve Turner’s biography, “TROUBLE MAN: The Life and Death of Marvin Gaye,” Marvin Gaye and Anna Gordy had taken very controversial steps to have their son, Marvin III.

MARVIN GAYE HAD SON WITH THEN-WIFE’S TEEN NIECE, DENISE GORDY?

It has been revealed, in the aforementioned biographies, that the reportedly REAL mother of Marvin Gaye III is actually actress, Denise Gordy, 71 (pictured below), the niece of Berry Gordy and Marvin Gaye’s then-wife, Anna Gordy. Denise was said to be just 15 years old at the time of Marvin III’s birth in 1965, which means Marvin Gaye risked being jailed for statutory rape, had anyone found out back then.

Let’s not forget that Marvin Gaye did publicly date his then-girlfriend (who eventually became his wife), Janis Gaye, when she was 17 and he was 34. So, being with a not-yet-legal young lady wasn’t foreign territory for him back then. Moving on…

Anna Gordy’s and Marvin Gaye’s pregnancy/birthing scandal was supposedly pre-arranged by the couple, because Anna — who was 17 years older than husband, Marvin — reportedly couldn’t conceive by that time.

According to the biographies, Anna Gordy — with her husband’s approval — faked her pregnancy for the media and claimed that she’d given birth to Marvin III. However, years later Marvin Gaye revealed in his biography, “Divided Soul: The Life of Marvin Gaye,” to author David Ritz, that their son, Marvin III, was really “adopted.” The book released in 1985, a year after Marvin’s death. According to several reports, that’s when Marvin Gaye III learned his true identity – that allegedly: his biological mother, Denise Gordy, is not his ‘cousin’; his ‘adoptive mom,’ Anna Gordy, is his great-aunt; and his ‘adoptive father,’ singer Marvin Gaye, is his biological father…allegedly.

Most of us have heard the story behind the horrific shooting that led to the untimely death of Marvin Gaye. On April 1, 1984, the “Sexual Healing” singer was shot twice by his father, Marvin Sr., after he attempted to intervene during an argument between his parents. The shooting took place at his parents’ home in the West Adams district of Los Angeles, CA.

Marvin Gaye Jr.’s mother, Alberta, recounted the horrific final moments of her son’s life during an interview with local police:

“I was standing about eight feet away from Marvin, when my husband came to the door of the bedroom with his pistol,” she said. “My husband didn’t say anything, he just pointed the gun at Marvin. I screamed but it was very quick. He, my husband, shot – and Marvin screamed. I tried to run. Marvin slid down to the floor after the first shot.”

Approximately 20 minutes later, Marvin was rushed to the California Hospital Medical Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival just one day before his 45th birthday. Not only were fans shocked about his sudden death, but how he died also created a media firestorm.

Despite the horrific murder, Marvin Gaye Sr. only received a six-year suspended jail sentence for his son’s death. Although Marvin Sr. admitted to killing his son, there were aspects of the shooting that ultimately led to the judge’s ruling in his favor. In the months that followed, more details emerged surrounding the shooting that have been largely either overshadowed are not shared with the public at all…until now…*SCROLL DOWN FOR VIDEO*

Marvin Jr. and Sr. didn’t just have an argument, there’s other ‘proof ‘that Marvin Jr. was the aggressor?

It was brought out during the trial of Marvin Gaye Sr. that his son, Marvin Jr. reportedly charged at him and attacked him, delivering blows to his body and head. That alleged attack led to what Marvin Sr. had told his attorneys all along- that he had several injuries and bruises on his body as a result of Marvin Jr. being the aggressive force during the attack…

Ultimately Marvin Sr. took a plea of manslaughter. However, after the witness accounts, the details that were shown within the trial- including the the multiple injuries Marvin Sr. reportedly sustained during the final altercation with his son- along with the autopsy finding, which confirmed there were drugs in Marvin Jr.’s system at the time of his death, the judge did not even find cause to issue Marvin Sr. a sentence under his manslaughter plea. The judge instead allowed Marvin Gaye Sr. to walk free.

During an interview with the LA Times, the retired pastor, Marvin Gaye Sr., expressed remorse for shooting his son and also shared his side of the story. He also argued that his son abused cocaine, which was reportedly confirmed by the autopsy findings. ”I’m sorry and I regret what happened to this moment,” Marvin Gaye Sr. said in the interview, conducted in the Los Angeles County Jail. ”I do know I did fire the gun. I was just trying to keep him back off me.”

“If I could bring him back, I would. I was afraid of him. I thought I was going to get hurt. I didn’t know what was going to happen. I’m really sorry for everything that happened. I loved him. I wish he could step through this door right now. I’m paying the price now.” -Marvin Gaye Sr.

Throughout the trial several of Marvin Jr.’s siblings, as well as his mother were by his Pops, Marvin Sr.’s side during the trial and I always wondered why. Now, after watching this court footage, it helps to bring a bit more clarity to the matter and into their mindset at that time.

The rare court footage and detailed account of the murder trial does not negate the fact that Marvin Gaye Sr. should have clearly found another option to getting his son off of him, other than shooting than man. But it does shed knew light on the situation for those of us who were unaware of the actual details of what really went down on that sad day for music and humanity. Rest on Marvin Gaye.

“You’re So Vain” singer, Carly Simon, claims she had some very risqué encounters with two old school icons- Redd Foxx and Marvin Gaye. When we first read what she revealed in her 2015 autobiography, Boys In The Trees, we let out a collective, ‘Say whaaaat?!!’. Though, I must admit that after reading Janis Gaye’s (Marvin Gaye’s wife) autobiography, we were not completely shocked at Carly’s claims about Marvin…but the story she told about Redd Foxx was a little more surprising. Why? Because we don’t typically hear those types of claims about the late comedic icon, unlike the beloved Mr. Gaye.

Simon alleged that before she hit it big in music, she was working as a secretary for a TV variety show, and it was during that time that she was sexually advanced upon by both legends in a bold, no-holds-barred type of way. Below is what was Rolling Stone Magazine detailed about Simon’s encounters with Foxx and Gaye.

Carly Simon’s claims about Redd Foxx:

When Simon’s career was slow to take off, she found jobs as a summer-camp counselor and as a secretary on a TV variety show. Her first day on the set, she had to go to the dressing room of comedian Redd Foxx, who promptly dropped his trademark red-fox fur coat, revealing that he was stark naked underneath. She quickly fled.

Carly Simon’s claims about Marvin Gaye:

Marvin Gaye, in his dressing room, was stripped only to the waist, but when he asked Simon to stick out her tongue, “Marvin lunged at my face, swept my tongue into his mouth, and began sucking on it. I extracted it without inflicting damage.”

Additionally, Carly Simon confessed to one such advance in her book…the one she says actor, Jack Nicholson, made toward her back in the day According to Rolling Stone, Jack’s reported advance toward Carly turned into a sexual fling:

When Jack Nicholson was making Carnal Knowledge with “Bugs, Artie the Garf, and Mike the Nick,” as he called them (Candice Bergen, Art Garfunkel, and Mike Nichols), he spent a couple of nights at Simon’s New York apartment. The first night, he showed off his seduction technique after she made a pot of coffee: “We chatted for a few moments and then he said, offhandedly, ‘Do you ever drink coffee in your bedroom?’”

Anywho…if Carly Simon’s claims are true, it sounds like Redd Foxx was trying to get Carly the heck up outta his dressing room ASAP — either that, or he was trying to get her to come in and “turn off the lights,” like Teddy P. once sang.  As far as Carly’s alleged ‘Marvin Gaye encounter,’ that was just weird. Well…both encounters were weird, but the thing that we’re still curious about for both incidents, is what exactly happened immediately afterwards, and how awkward was it that very next time Carly Simon saw Foxx and Gaye at her job?

One thing’s for certain, if Carly’s claims are accurate, then Marvin Gaye and Redd Foxx must’ve been making some hella bold advances back in the day.

Rick James told a very interesting story in his memoir, Memoirs Of a Super Freak, about the time his then Motown label mate, Marvin Gaye set him up, causing him to catch flack from Berry Gordy. Here’s what he said happened:

Rick James – “One day at the studio I ran into Marvin Gaye. He asked me, “Rick, have you gotten your bonus?” I said, “What bonus?” He said, “Your bonus for going platinum.”

“I said I hadn’t. He said whenever somebody’s album goes platinum, Motown gives them a bonus. I said I hadn’t gotten mine yet. He said that if it wasn’t cash, then a Stutz (exotic car) or something.”

I began to get pissed. I hadn’t received anything and I certainly felt I deserved it.

The next day I got up early and went to Motown. I was mad. I went into Suzanne DePasse’s office and screamed.

“Where’s my bonus?”

She calmed down and said, “Rick, this is something you should talk to Berry Gordy about.”

I tried calling Berry but he was nowhere to be found.

I didn’t know it then but Marvin loved to start shit up with the company and their artists. Motown did sometimes give bonuses for huge selling albums but it wasn’t mandatory and Marvin knew this.

He was just trying to rile me up and cause trouble. He knew I had a crazy nature and he knew that I would run straight to Motown and raise hell. Marvin was always like that, a crazy motherf***er, but I loved him to death.

I never got a bonus and Berry Gordy called and told me that I was out of line. At that time Marvin was divorcing Berry’s sister, Anna, and he was recording an album that she would get all the royalties from. So I guess he felt like causing even more trouble than usual. Berry did end up throwing some extra money my way but he made sure I knew that from then on I had to talk straight to him if I had a problem. – Rick James, Memoirs Of a Super Freak

It must have been like a spontaneous combustion sometimes, with two dominant personalities like Marvin’s and Rick’s together in the same room…anything was bound to happen. We love them both dearly though and we only wish we could have been flies on the wall for some of the stories they lived to tell.
