Mel Waiters, the Southern blues singer known for soul-drenched hits such as “Hole in the Wall” and “The Smaller the Club,” died Thursday morning (May 28) after a battle with cancer. He was 58.

Waiters had been performing since his teens, in the early 1970s, but launched his solo career in earnest in the ’90s (with the help of New Orleans music impresario Bobby Marchan, he told a San Antonio newspaper in 2013). He was popular on the blues cruise and festival circuit for his funky, witty rhythm and blues songs about romance and celebration, and had appeared on the cover of “Living Blues” magazine.

Waiters headlined the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation’s Crescent City Blues and BBQ Festival three times. Below, check out some video of his 2013 performance at the fest, plus some more favorite Mel Waiters cuts.
