Now before we break down what exactly was said, let’s first say that regardless of if we agree, or disagree with Tyrese’s opinion, there’s one thing we give him a ton of respect for, and that is for not playing the politically correct card like so many other celebs do, out of fear of public and industry backlash. Celebs are still people, with real emotions, thoughts, and opinions just like the rest of us, and who are we to pressure them into feeling as if they should not allow themselves to be real simply because they are celebrities? With that said, let’s discuss the shots fired that were Tyrese’s recent Instagram posts regarding Chris Rock and his bashing of Jada Pinkett-Smith.
Although it’s been a few days now since the biased Oscar Awards aired, the amount of backlash has not quite simmered across America, understandably so.

Tyrese took to his Instagram page shortly after finding out that Chris Rock blasted Jada and Will Smith for taking a stand against injustices with the Oscar Awards ceremony and it’s organization, so he decided to say something about it to the public:

I didn’t watch – I didn’t – but online people are talking and someone posted the tasteless joke that Chris Rock did in his opening – Did you really use your STAGE to tear down and diminish one of the strongest most fearless black women IN this town as the world watched??? Jokes are just jokes right???? Not when someone is trying to affect change……… Not when someone is willing to put it ALL on the line to affect change for our daughters and sons of the future…….. Shame on you Chris Rock – Now let me run to YouTube and watch Leo’s acceptance speech………… So fucking proud of you Leo……

A few days after the show aired the very LOW ratings for the ceremony were releaesed to the public, which were a direct result of the boycott that Jada and Will Smith helped to spark. Tyrese then posted this about:

This is HOW we affect change……….. United we stand together we stand and change will follow – Some people assumed that the buzz, hype and controversy would make people tune IN…….. But instead…….. They tuned out african American’s have ONLY won 14 Oscars in 88 YEARS…….. IF you are working your ass off and you’re fully committed to your CRAFT – you’re sacrificing it ALL and putting your BEST FOOT FORWARD it doesn’t matter if you’re black white Latin gay or straight YOU deserve and “opportunity” to be nominated and win an Oscar, a Grammy or any other award…….. Today we salute YOU for standing with us – ALL of us took a stand and we made a impact……….. Cheers to our daughters and sons of the FUTURE…… We stand up NOW…. And we affect change for them in the future…

Tyrese didn’t stop there, he also posted a side by side photo of Rosa Parks and Jada Pinkett-Smith with a very potent message:

Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, and fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people will not feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone and as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give others permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.

The backlash came because McDaniel’s role as the house slave who disciplined her owner’s daughter, “Scarlett O’Hara” (Vivien Leigh), scoffed at “Rhett Butler” (Clark Gable), but dare not talk back to the wife, “Mrs. O’Hara,” all of whom were Caucasian, while McDaniel played the role of “Mammy.”
Because African Americans felt that McDaniel’s “Mammy” role was a success, but that it also further celebrated the systemic slave system within America during, just as they were trying to fight for equal rights, Hattie’s attempt to take her show on the road as the role of “Mammy” failed miserably with the Black audience.

Overall, we still salute Ms. Hattie McDaniel for kicking down a door that seemed to be cemented shut back then, when segregation was still in full effect and Jim Crow laws were still enforced. If it weren’t for her enduring all that she endured and still representing strength through it all, there would be no Tarajis, no Halles, no Whoopis and so many more. So for that we thank Ms. McDaniel, whom if she were still here, would probably be deeply disappointed to learn that ever since she was the first African American to win an Oscar, there have only been just a little over a handful more Black actors to do the same within the 76 years after she delivered her powerful acceptance speech in 1940.
