Heartbreaking news to share, I Love Old School Music family…music icon, Quincy Jones, has passed away at the age of 91. According to his publicist, Arnold Robinson, Jones died peacefully on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at his Los Angeles home, surrounded by family.

“Tonight, with full but broken hearts, we must share the news of our father and brother Quincy Jones’ passing,” the family said in a statement, per AP. “And although this is an incredible loss for our family, we celebrate the great life that he lived and know there will never be another like him.”

Quincy Jones is survived by his children: Rashida, Kidada, Kenya, Quincy III, Jolie, Martina, and Rachel. He also leaves behind grandchildren, including Isaiah, Quincy IV, and Nea. Quincy Jones is also the godfather of Al B Sure’s son (and Diddy’s stepson) –actor/musician Quincy Brown– who was named after the iconic producer.

Quincy Jones stands as the second most-awarded artist in Grammy history, with an impressive 28 wins and an unmatched 80 nominations since 1961. His Grammy achievements include three Producer of the Year awards and two honors each for Album and Song of the Year.

In 1974, at just 41, Jones faced a life-threatening brain aneurysm. After undergoing one critical surgery, doctors discovered a second aneurysm on the verge of rupturing, prompting another high-risk procedure. His survival odds were just one in a hundred, but he overcame the challenge.

When he was just 14, Quincy Jones left the home of his ab*sive stepmother, who, he later shared with GQ, didn’t call him by his name until he was 57. To escape, he lied about his age to join the National Guard, where he encountered harsh racism. During this time, he survived a horrific accident on the way to a rodeo in Yakima, which left him deeply shaken and as the sole survivor. The experience led to a lifelong aversion to driving.

Hailing from Chicago, Quincy Jones initially gained recognition as a trumpet player in bands led by jazz legends like Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie. As a prolific producer and arranger, he played a crucial role in the success of many musical icons, including Frank Sinatra, Michael Jackson, and Aretha Franklin. Notably, he produced Jackson’s 1982 classic “Beat It,” enlisting the late Eddie Van Halen for the unforgettable guitar solo. His 1974 album Body Heat reached number six on the Billboard 200, contributing to his impressive discography of hits and Top 20 albums.

Quincy Jones’ incredible impact within the music industry, as well as the beautiful memories he’s created for us all through his work, will never be forgotten, nor taken for granted by his millions of fans worldwide. Quincy Jones: “Have you ever seen the video of them [Prince and Michael] at James Brown’s gig? [Prince] always had this thing with Michael (laughs), they would CLASH (laughs). But [at that time] Michael had 25 years of experience, Prince had 5 years. So Michael went up there [on stage with James Brown] sang for about 15 seconds then moonwalked for about 15 seconds. And then he whispered in James Brown’s ear to ‘Let Prince come up.’

Prince jumped up on the back of his bodyguard, took his gloves off and threw ’em at them [Michael and his crew], then they threw ’em back at him…and then [Prince] came up and tried to challenge Michael. That’s not the way you do cameos, man. You join the family, you don’t fight with each other or try to compete with each other. He made a fool out of himself that night. So Prince] waited for them [Michael, Latoya and their crew] after the show in his limousine and he tried to run over La Toya and Michael (laughs). That was some drama Mama! Jones continued:

He [Prince] came in with a big box of stuff, he’d just finished “Under The cherry Moon…directing it- He had this box of stuff, it was WEIRD man. Kidada Jones, daughter of music icon, Quincy Jones, was the very last person to speak with her fiancé, Tupac, just moments before he died. In a very emotional recollection of what happened at the Las Vegas hospital, where ‘Pac died of gunshot wounds, the pain that clouded Kidada’s heart is evident.

Kidada Was With ‘Pac The Night He Was Shot & They Planned On Having A Baby

Kidada Jones was in Vegas with Tupac on that horrific night of September 7, 1996, when ‘Pac was shot on a Las Vegas strip. The two were also living together in Calabasas, CA at the time of his murder. According to Vanity Fair, they’d planned on having a baby; and whenever ‘Pac was on the road he’d call Kidada nightly, ending their call with the words, “I’d take a bullet for you.” That’s how much he loved her.

‘Pac Was Tense In Las Vegas Hotel With Kidada

VF reported that the night ‘Pac was shot, he told Kidada he didn’t want to go to the Tyson fight, but he’d promised Suge Knight he would. However, he didn’t want her to be around the rowdy pack of people at the fight, so he told her to stay at the hotel instead.

In the hours leading up to the fight, Kidada says Tupac became more tense and when she asked him if he was planning on wearing his bulletproof vest he said, “No. It’ll be too hot.” Later that day she says their ride to Las Vegas was silent and ‘Pac seemed to have a lot on his mind. They made it to Vegas, she settled down in the Luxor Hotel, while he went to the Tyson fight at the MGM Grand. Hours later, ‘Pac came back heated:

Via Vanity Fair: “Some nig&a started a fight with me for nothin’,” [Tupac] told Kidada. “Something’s up. You stay here.” After a fast change into a basketball jersey and some baggy sweats, he was gone.

Kidada: When I got to the hospital they handed me a bag of bloody clothes and jewelry and told me, ‘He had no blood pressure when he came in. He’s had two blood transfusions and he is in the ICU hanging on by a string.’ I got a blanket from the hospital and circled the parking lot for nine hours. I said, “There’s no way he’s gonna die. There’s just no way. […] I walked around there ’til the sun came up….I was in complete shock.”-Via Q

What Happened Between Kidada & ‘Pac After He Regained Consciousness

Via Vanity Fair: [Tupac] regained consciousness once when Kidada was putting Don McLean’s “Vincent” into the CD player next to his bed. She heard a moan, and his eyes fluttered open. They were filled with mucus and swollen. “Tupac,” Kidada said, coming close, “do you hear me?” He seemed to nod. “If you can hear me,” she said, “move your feet.” The sheets rustled at the end of the bed. “Do you know I love you?” she said. “Do you know we all love you?” This time, the nod was distinct. As Kidada turned to the door, Tupac shook in convulsions. Then he slipped into a coma.

After ‘Pac’s Death “I Didn’t Want To Be Alive”

Via Q: Kidada said, “He and I lived together for four months and then he was murdered. […] It was the most horrible thing that ever happened to me. I knew we should’ve never gone to Vegas that night. I had a horrible feeling about it. I’ve gone over it in my mind a million times. It wasn’t supposed to happen. We weren’t supposed to be there. It was the worst possible thing that could’ve happened. [..] I never got to say goodbye. It’s not something that should happen to anyone. […] For a while afterward, I didn’t want to be alive. I was on my back, literally on my back, for months. My father [Quincy Jones] underestimated how that affected me and shaped and molded me as a human being.”

Six days after ‘Pac was shot, his beloved mother, Afeni Shakur, had no choice but to make the heart-wrenching decision to take him off life support on September 13, 1996. Rest on Tupac and Akeni Shakur…gone but never forgotten.

ILOSM fam,’ when you grow up with a dad who’s one of the most iconic musicians/producers ever, you tend to have quite a few interesting throwback memories to share. One such memory is the one Jones’ 46-year-old daughter and “Black AF” actress, Rashida Jones, told during a 2015 interview on Apple Beats 1 radio show, with Vampire Weekend’s host, Ezra Koenig. It involved “Blurred Lines” singer (and son of late “Growing Pains” actor, Alan Thicke), Robin Thicke, and R&B legend, Al B. Sure.

Why Rashida Jones Cancelled Thicke For Al B.

During her Apple interview, Rashida discussed her days growing up with her Pops and actress mom. In doing so, she revealed that in junior high school, she dropped Robin Thicke like a bad habit, for Al B. Sure, but apparently her plan didn’t quite work out when it came to Al B.:

His dad was on ‘Growing Pains’ and my mom was on ‘Twin Peaks’ at the same time so we met at an ABC party and we flirted and exchanged numbers, landlines obviously,” Jones recalled. “I called him and asked him to come to junior high prom with me. And then for whatever reason, I don’t remember this, he reminded me of this a few years ago, I called him back and said, ‘I’m so sorry. You can’t come with me because Al B. Sure is actually coming with me.’”

The daughter of Quincy Jones explained Sure was a family friend who was probably trying to be nice, but it wound up not happening. “So you didn’t get to go to the dance with Thicke or Al B. Sure,” Koenig concluded. “I didn’t. I actually worked the door! So sad.”

Kidada Jones, daughter of music icon, Quincy Jones, was the very last person to speak with her fiancé, Tupac, just moments before he died. In a very emotional recollection of what happened at the Las Vegas hospital, where ‘Pac died of gunshot wounds, the pain that clouded Kidada’s heart is evident.

Kidada Was With ‘Pac The Night He Was Shot & They Planned On Having A Baby

Kidada Jones was in Vegas with Tupac on that horrific night of September 7, 1996, when ‘Pac was shot on a Las Vegas strip. The two were also living together in Calabasas, CA at the time of his murder. According to Vanity Fair, they’d planned on having a baby; and whenever ‘Pac was on the road he’d call Kidada nightly, ending their call with the words, “I’d take a bullet for you.” That’s how much he loved her.

‘Pac Was Tense In Las Vegas Hotel With Kidada

VF reported that the night ‘Pac was shot, he told Kidada he didn’t want to go to the Tyson fight, but he’d promised Suge Knight he would. However, he didn’t want her to be around the rowdy pack of people at the fight, so he told her to stay at the hotel instead.

In the hours leading up to the fight, Kidada says Tupac became more tense and when she asked him if he was planning on wearing his bulletproof vest he said, “No. It’ll be too hot.” Later that day she says their ride to Las Vegas was silent and ‘Pac seemed to have a lot on his mind. They made it to Vegas, she settled down in the Luxor Hotel, while he went to the Tyson fight at the MGM Grand. Hours later, ‘Pac came back heated:

Via Vanity Fair: “Some nig&a started a fight with me for nothin’,” [Tupac] told Kidada. “Something’s up. You stay here.” After a fast change into a basketball jersey and some baggy sweats, he was gone.

Kidada Describes Very Sad Hospital Moments With Tupac

Kidada: When I got to the hospital they handed me a bag of bloody clothes and jewelry and told me, ‘He had no blood pressure when he came in. He’s had two blood transfusions and he is in the ICU hanging on by a string.’ I got a blanket from the hospital and circled the parking lot for nine hours. I said, “There’s no way he’s gonna die. There’s just no way. […] I walked around there ’til the sun came up….I was in complete shock.”-Via Q

What Happened Between Kidada & ‘Pac After He Regained Consciousness

Via Vanity Fair: [Tupac] regained consciousness once when Kidada was putting Don McLean’s “Vincent” into the CD player next to his bed. She heard a moan, and his eyes fluttered open. They were filled with mucus and swollen. “Tupac,” Kidada said, coming close, “do you hear me?” He seemed to nod. “If you can hear me,” she said, “move your feet.” The sheets rustled at the end of the bed. “Do you know I love you?” she said. “Do you know we all love you?” This time, the nod was distinct. As Kidada turned to the door, Tupac shook in convulsions. Then he slipped into a coma.

After ‘Pac’s Death “I Didn’t Want To Be Alive”

Via Q: Kidada said, “He and I lived together for four months and then he was murdered. […] It was the most horrible thing that ever happened to me. I knew we should’ve never gone to Vegas that night. I had a horrible feeling about it. I’ve gone over it in my mind a million times. It wasn’t supposed to happen. We weren’t supposed to be there. It was the worst possible thing that could’ve happened. [..] I never got to say goodbye. It’s not something that should happen to anyone. […] For a while afterward, I didn’t want to be alive. I was on my back, literally on my back, for months. My father [Quincy Jones] underestimated how that affected me and shaped and molded me as a human being.”

Six days after ‘Pac was shot, his beloved mother, Afeni Shakur, had no choice but to make the heart-wrenching decision to take him off life support on September 13, 1996. Rest on Tupac and Akeni Shakur…gone but never forgotten.

Many Quincy Jones fans had no idea Rashida had given birth to son, Isaiah Jones Koenig, in August 2018. Matter of fact, most fans of the Parks & Recreation and The Office actress, also did not know about the first child she and her famous boyfriend had. Thus, the term, “secret baby.”
