Richard Pryor

The iconic Richard Pryor, as we all know, lived quite the dramatic life – ALL his life- from childhood to adulthood. The circumstances he revealed about how his Fathera died at the age of 57, is just as dramatic and equally bizarre.

PRYOR’S FATHER DIED IN A VERY RARE  WAY

Richard Pryor often discussed what it was like being raised in the brothel that his Grandmother owned and his mother worked in as a prostitute. Then there was his father, LeRoy Pryor, who was his Momma’s pimp and employed several other prostitutes at that same brothel young Richard Pryor called home. Well needless to say, Richard Pryor’s Father died in just as shocking of a manner in which he lived. Pryor once revealed how his Pops died at the age of 57:

“I’d like to die like my father died,” he says. “My father died f**king…he DID! My father was 57 when he died. The woman was 18. My father came and went at the same time. […] I just figured God must’ve loved my Father an awful lot to let him go out like THAT.” – Richard Pryor

Pryor then did what Pryor was great at…cracked more jokes about the situation, in spite of it being painful loss for him:

And the… and the woman that he was making love too, right, couldn’t give away no pu$$y for two years, cause people were going, un-un, no, no, mmm, uh, no baby, uh, no. You done killed one motherf**ka with it, that’s all right. No, that’s some pu$$y you can keep right there, mmm. And I saw the lady recently, and she’s still a little fucked up about it, you know. She came and said, I’m sorry I killed your father. I said, miss, what are you talking about. I said, sh*t, people get killed in plane wrecks and run over by buses and sh*t. He died in your pu$$y. That’s called recycling.

Yep you read that right, Pryor’s dad sadly passed away in the middle of sexual intercourse and Pryor actually turned his pain into laughter when he incorporated his Father’s death into his timeless stand-up concert in 1992, “Live In Concert.” Like we said earlier, the late great Richard Pryor lived quite a dramatic life and from the looks of it, his beloved parents did the same. May they all continue to rest peacefully.

Richard Pryor

The year was 1973 and fans couldn’t wait to see The Mack in theaters. The movie is now a classic, but the road to get it filmed was a long, rocky one…according to what The Mack’s lead actor, Max Julien; and the film’s producer/director, Michael Campus, once revealed. The beloved Richard Pryor was at the center of the conflict and the ruckus he reportedly caused on set was in true Pryor form. So we weren’t necessarily shocked when we heard about this, but it’s still entertaining nonetheless.

Pryor Urinated On Female Co-Star?

Actress, Shelly Winters

Pryor almost didn’t make it into “The Mack” cast, until his good friend, Max, pushed for him to be in it. After which, Pryor’s career began to get back on track.

Why were there reservations about hiring Pryor for The Mack? Because word on the old school curb is that he –get this– urinated on his Caucasian co-actress, Shelley Winters, while filming their movie, Wild In The Streets, 5 years earlier. Wild In The Streets was Pryor’s first movie and after that alleged piss fest, not many in Hollywood actually wanted to work with him ever again.

“The Mack” Director Didn’t Want To Cast Pryor…But Max Julien Stepped In

According to Max Julien, The Mack producer, Harvey Bernhard, absolutely did not want to cast Pryor in the film because of Pryor’s untamed behavior and that infamous urinating incident.

“The Mack” director, Michael Campus

The Mack’s director, Michael Campus, also hated the thought of working with Richard Pryor because of his reputation and he actually described his time on the set with Pryor as “difficult.” Campus said that on many occasions while filming, Pryor showed up to the set high as a kite, and sometimes he was a no-show altogether. Campus also admitted that he was shocked at how well Pryor performed in the film, because on camera Pryor came to life like a true professional and you couldn’t even tell that he was high during taping, once the finished product was completed.

The reason why The Mack saved Pryor’s career, is because it was a huge box-office hit and prompted other Hollywood big wigs to want to be in the ‘Pryor business’ again. He was then able to pull his career and reputation out of a declining spiral. Not sure if Pryor and Shelley Winters ever made up though.

(L) Max Julien as “Goldie” and (R) Richard Pryor as “Slim” on set of “The Mack” film, 1973

As you can see, Richard Pryor had become somewhat of an outcast in Hollywood, following his reported piss-gate incident. Not only was that obviously a disrespectful thing to do to another human being, but there was Pryor – an African American man – peeing on a Caucasian woman’s head during the civil rights era in 1968! Geesh! Richard P. didn’t give a you-know-what.

Here are a few more fun facts  about The Mack movie:

– According to what Max Julien stated on the DVD commentary, Richard Pryor and producer, Harvey Bernhard, had a heated argument during filming. Later that night, Pryor was going to Bernhard’s hotel room to attack him with a sock filled with ball bearings, until Julien calmed Pryor down.

– The infamous Player’s Ball scene was largely Richard Pryor’s idea. Other parts of the story Pryor took directly from people he’d known who were living that lifestyle a the time. That included real life incidents of seeing gangsters put a man in the trunk of a car with rats; and forcing a drug pusher to stab himself at gun point.

– The final draft of the script was written by Max Julien, Richard Pryor, and Michael Campus.

Those were all colorful moments in the ever-so-colorful legacy of the late, great Richard Pryor. We still love the man’s work, but even he, himself, had publicly admitted to just how wild his past endeavors in his professional and personal lives really were.

Richard Pryor, Twitter

A new documentary by Austin, Texas, filmmaker Jesse James Miller’s I Am Richard Pryor, has debuted on the Paramount Network on Friday. It is billed as a celebration of “the life and career of the iconic comedian who lifted himself out of poverty to achieve worldwide success.”

The documentary features many clips from his comedy specials and acting roles, but the film also dug deep into his upbringing. His past in Peoria, Illinois, which Pryor would only begin discussing openly later in his life, was addressed.

I remember the candid words of Richard Pryor many years ago, in regards to his relationship with a transgender, but more importantly, the details regarding his childhood.

I Am Richard Pryor, Documentary Event, Twitter

Richard Pryor openly admitted to being with a transgender woman…and after you see the details within this article, you’ll probably have a better understanding about all of this.

Richard Pryor Proudly Admitted Dating A Transgender

The legendary comedian, Richard Pryor Sr. said he tried a relationship with a transgendered man for about two weeks. He said:

“I never kept him a secret. My best friend for instance, knew I was f**king a dude, and a drop-dead gorgeous one at that. I even admitted doing something different was exciting. But after two weeks of being gay, enough was enough and I went back to life as a heterosexual.”

Back in January (2018), Quincy Jones sparked a media firestorm when he spilled all the beans about a few of his famous friends. From Michael Jackson, to Marlon Brando, and Richard Pryor, Jones told it all, during his interview with Vulture magazine. He even made mention of the Jo Jo Dancer star having a sexual relationship with Marlon Brando behind closed doors. Of course, the allegations led to a heated discussion on social media and many wondered if Jones had gone too far by spreading rumors or if he was really keepin’ it real and telling the truth.

In Denial?:

When TMZ caught up with Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Lee Pryor, in West Hollywood, she was once again asked about the whole debacle surrounding her late husband’s sexuality. She had no reservations reiterating what she’d previously said. Her husband was bisexual and despite his daughter, Rain, denying the allegations, Jennifer insists she was a child who wasn’t there or had any knowledge of her father’s sexual life behind closed doors. “I think Rain has trouble with the truth herself,” Jennifer says in the video below. “She doesn’t wanna, I mean, she was not there…she wasn’t there. It’s kind of sad wishful thinking and I don’t know why she’s ashamed. She shouldn’t be, she should be proud of her father’s truth.”

Check out the video:

Jennifer’s latest comments follow her prior response to the allegations. After Quincy Jones made headlines with his statements about Pryor’s sexuality, of course, his widow was asked about the statements. Surprisingly, she admitted Jones was telling the truth. She also explained how drugs may have played a part in Pryor’s sexual escapades, but she confirmed there definitely were a few escapades. “It was the ’70s! Drugs were still good, especially quaaludes. If you did enough cocaine, you’d f*** a radiator and send it flowers in the morning.”

Quincy Tells All:

For those who haven’t read Jones’ Vulture magazine interview, he definitely had a lot to say and didn’t cut any corners. “[Marlon] Brando used to go cha-cha dancing with us. He could dance his [expletive] off. He was the most charming [expletive] you ever met. He’d [expletive] anything,” Jones told Vulture. “Anything! He’d [expletive] a mailbox. James Baldwin. Richard Pryor. Marvin Gaye.”

Jones had so much to say, even his daughters told him he needed to slow his roll. Although Quincy Jones was apparently telling the truth, obviously his daughters weren’t the only ones with problems with the interview. Pryor’s daughter definitely wasn’t pleased and she boldly called Jones out. Despite the details Jones provided, Rain Pryor adamantly denied the claims. The late comedian/actor’s daughter took to Facebook to respond to Jones’ allegations. In her Facebook post, she discussed her childhood and relationship with her father. “My dad was very open with his life, so much so that news of his relationship with a trans woman in the early 70s and 80s wasn’t really newsworthy nor notable. As a child I knew her, not as the trans person in our home, but the lady whom everyone accepted. So much acceptance I did not know she was trans until recently.”

She went on to discuss Quincy Jones. “Q was once a brilliant music producer who is losing his mind – and decided to garner publicity for himself with a sensationalized interview,” Rain Pryor said. “Then on top of it all, my dad’s so-called widow validated it, because she needs to keep legitimizing herself and tarnish our dad even after he’s dead. She hated Q and Daddy.”

Advice Richard Pryor Gave Haddish As A Teen That Changed Her Life

Tiffany said that when she was growing up in a foster home, she was always getting into trouble at school and her social worker ultimately gave her an option to either enter psychiatric therapy, or a Laugh Factory comedy camp for the summer. Tiffany chose the latter and that’s where Pryor gave her advice that she uses to this day. Tiffany said she was attempting to do comedy on the Laugh Factory stage and Richard Pryor just so happened to be there:

“He [Pryor] said, ‘Look, people don’t come to comedy shows because they want to hear about your problems, or politics or religion. They come to have fun, so when you’re on stage, you need to be having fun. If you’re having fun, the audience is having fun.’ And then as I got older I started realizing, ‘Oh man. I’ma try to do this in everything in life because once I started having fun onstage, you know, people were nice to me. People were kind; it was easier to move forward,” Haddish explained in an interview.

Other Hilarious Celebrity Stories Haddish Revealed

As many of us know by now, Ms. Haddish has earned a top spot as a juicy story teller and official tea spiller, with the inside scoop she’s been giving in the past year alone! So here’s a brief recap of some of her hilarious celebrity encounters..
1. During an interview on “The Ellen Degeneres Show,” Tiffany was choppin’ it up with Ellen, about her love for Oprah and how she once met her during her days as a ‘professional movie extra’ in Hollywood:

“I did this move called ‘Their Eyes Were Watching God’ and I was an extra and it was a movie that Oprah was producing. … She had walked by and I was making all the other extras laugh and she said, ‘You’re a very funny young lady.’ I like like, ‘Eeeee!'”

Haddish revealed that Oprah encouraged her to keep her informed of how her career was going, to which Haddish obliged and said she wrote Oprah several letters. Tiffany also told Ellen about her desire to one day start a home grown vegetable business with Oprah, called Tiff & O and that’s when Ellen interrupted her with a big surprise. She told Tiff’ that maybe she should say those things to Oprah herself, and that’s when Oprah walked out. Tiffany could NOT believe it and immediately burst into tears, while simultaneously running over to give Oprah a hug. Check out that beautiful moment between Tiffany and Oprah up top.

2. During a break from filming the hit movie, “Girls Trip,” in New Orleans, La. Tiff’ said her co-star Jada Pinkett-Smith, asked her if she and Will could tag along on a swamp tour, which Tiffany had already planned on going solo. Haddish admitted that when she picked up Jada and Will from their hotel, in what she called her ‘cheap rental car,’ she was happy and terrified to have so much ‘money’ in her back seat (referring to Will Smith) LOL. Watch that hilarious video clip up below…

3. And of course we can’t forget about Tiffany’s revelation about another well known celeb biting Beyonce in the face at a party. You can read about that fiasco HERE.

The job of a standup comedian is tough. It’s even tougher when you’re the son of one of the most iconic comedians of ALL time. That would be the case for Mason Pryor. Now, if you’re like many of us, here at ILOSM, you’re probably saying to yourself, ‘Mason WHO???,’ and understandably so. So, before we show y’all how the brotha just got profusely booed on Showtime at the Apollo and how he responded to it, let us first start with the basics…

Harpo, Who Dis??

Mason is Richard Pryor’s youngest son, whom most of us never even knew existed. He was born Franklin Matthew Pryor and currently goes by the name, Mason Pryor, to incorporate his mother/former model, Geraldine Mason’s, maiden name and his father’s name. As y’all can see from his photos, the 31 year old comedian looks a lot like his Pops, even down to the afro he’s rockin’ nowadays.

In fact, when he stepped onto that Apollo stage the other day, some fans felt like they were about witness the 1982 era Richard Pryor: Live On The Sunset Strip all over again. That anticipation quickly left the room though and fans soon learned that the aspiring offspring of Richard has a loooong way to go before he reaches his daddy’s level.

Video Of Pryor’s Son Getting Booed To Smithereens

Mason Pryor’s Apollo Show appearance was his first major television appearance. He was a contestant on the show, which aired Thursday, and he probably gained a whole new respect for the roads his Pops had to travel to carve out his signature niche in the comedy game.

Even though Apollo host, Steve Harvey, tried to hype the crowd up for Mason, prior to him steppin’ onto the stage, Mason was booed to Timbuktu and back. When he first came out, the crowd showed interest and couldn’t help but notice how much he looked like his dad. However, about a minute into his set, the boos raineth down uponeth Mason Pryor with a vengeance, as he was in the middle of telling a Trump-Putin joke that didn’t go over well. Harvey stood on the side of the stage, looking hella worried for Mason, while Mason’s face displayed utter embarrassment. Watch the fiasco below, if you can make it to the end, because it’s kinda unbearable to watch…

His Reaction Is Priceless & We Love It (Video)

Now, I must admit that I, too, thought Mason Pryor’s Apollo jokes were wack as hell. However, after seeing his reaction to getting booed and his winning spirit, I’m now #TeamMasonPryor. The brotha took the embarrassment and turned it into a positive learning experience. Check out what he said below.

Mason Pryor on initial his reaction as he was getting booed:

“I was shocked. I had done…a few comedy clubs here and there. I’ve opened up for Eddie Griffin before, but this was my first BIG opening show. So when I went out there, the first thing I did, was I’m looking at the crowd, lights and everything and I’m like ‘Wow! This is really nice guys…this is gonna go GREAT!’ LOL. And you can kinda tell…halfway through that first Donald Trump bit, I was like ‘Aaight this is taking a REALLY long time to get to the end’ (LOL). So…it is what it is man.”

When Mason was asked to appear on Apollo, it was an opportunity he didn’t want to miss and stated that his Pops had appeared on show back in the day, so he wanted to as well. He doesn’t regret getting booed at all:

“That’s the game. You know, with music it’s easier- we’ve tested the market….we’ve sold this album, we’ve already put it on the radio, we know this is going to be good. With comedy, you can’t tell a joke before you tell it, because they’ll know the punchline. So you gotta go out there. You gotta go out there…be a dare devil.”

Mason is just grateful that at least people now know who he is:

“I went from being, ‘Wait, you’re that one guy’s comedian son? WHAT?!!’ To now it’s like, ‘Yo, this dude is not funny, but he’s HERE!’ LOL.

If Mason Pryor’s comedy doesn’t take him far, his personality sure can…gotta love his positive lease on life.

Most Of The Greats Have Been Booed

Most great comedians know that getting booed off stage, is damn near like a right of passage in the beginning phase of one’s career. No one actually wants to get booed, but many legendary comics have revealed how their past booing experiences ultimately made them step their game up.

Dave Chappelle once said that getting booed was “the best thing that ever happened to me.” The late Charlie Murphy once revealed that he was booed and one heckler even shouted “You ain’t Eddie!.” That was clearly a low blow for Charlie, as he tried to step outside of his brother’s comedic shadow, but he eventually came back stronger. Hopefully that’s what Pryor’s son, Mason Pryor, will do in the near future. Best of luck to him.

It’s been about week and people are still talking about Quincy Jones’ epic interview, where he dropped massive bombshells about superstars in the entertainment world. Depending on what side of the fence you’re on, you either grabbed your popcorn and allowed Q to enlighten and entertain us all about the goings-on behind the scenes of the industry; or you were either pissed with the iconic producer. Actor, Marlon Brando’s, son, Miko Brando (who was also Michael Jackson bodyguard and very close friend), happens to fall on the latter. He’s just spoken out to defend his late pop’s legacy, much like Richard Pryor’s daughter recently did (then deleted) on social media.

Brando’s Son Responds To Q’s Claims

Simply put, Miko says his dad did not have sex with Richard Pryor, regardless of what Quincy Jones, nor Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Pryor recently confirmed:

Via TMZ: Marlon’s oldest living son, Miko Brando, tells TMZ … “The Marlon Brando family has heard the recent comments by Quincy Jones and we are disappointed that anyone would make such a wrongful comment about either Marlon Brando or Richard Pryor.”

Quincy’s and Pryor’s Widow’s Claims

Many of y’all may recall, during Quincy’s new Vulture interview, but if not, here’s what he said:

Quincy Jones- [Marlon] Brando the actor and Jones were longtime friends. During a down period in Jones’s life, he spent time on the island in Tahiti which Brando owned. The two called each other Leroy, owing to a story recounted extremely well (one among many) in this recent GQ profile. used to go cha-cha dancing with us. He could dance his ass off. He was the most charming motherf*cker you ever met. He’d f*ck anything. Anything! He’d f*ck a mailbox. James Baldwin. Richard Pryor. Marvin Gaye.

After the interview, more details about Pryor’s bisexuality (which we previously reported in 2014) began to re-emerge as internet users everywhere, started seeking proof of Quincy’s claims. Once Pryor’s past public admissions about his open bisexuality re-surfaced, everyone pretty much concluded that Q and Pryor’s widow were probably being truthful about Richard and Brando.

Pryor’s Daughter’s Defense Of Dad

Rain Pryor tried to also deny Quincy’s and Jennifer Pryor’s revelation, in a lengthy Facebook post, but has since deleted it. However, you can read it in full HERE. In her post, she revealed surprising details about the past interactions she’d had with her father, Richard’s, transgender girlfriend back in the day, but still denied that he had sex with Marlon Brando.

Can Children Truly Know Their Parents’ Entire Sexual Past?

Richard Pryor...

When we previously reported Rain Pryor’s denial, that her dad had sex with Marlon Brando, I questioned whether or not Rain is actually fully capable of defending her dad’s sexual history. Don’t get me wrong, she apparently was very close to her dad. However, as we all know, it is not uncommon for children to not be thoroughly informed about all of the details of their parents’ sex life – past or present. That’s one aspect of life where typically Brando’s and Pryor’s peers and friends (like Quincy Jones and Jennifer Pryor) would likely have more information about the late icons.

That could also be why Rain Pryor has since deleted her post and Miko Brando only released a short statement- there’s only so much they can probably say in their dads’ defense, understandably so.

Whatever Brando’s and Pryors’s sexual orientation, the bottom line is they were both gifted at their crafts. ‘Nuff said.

Many of us, old schoolers, remember actress, Rain Pryor, from her tenure on the 80’s/90’s sitcom, Head of the Class. She’s also the Richard Pryor’s daughter and loved her Pops unconditionally. Her dad has been making headlines all over the internet, after Quincy Jones revealed, in his recent interview, that Pryor had sex with the late actor, Marlon Brando. Soon after Jones’ reveal, Pryor’s widow, Jennifer Pryor, also publicly confirmed Quincy’s claim, stating she knew her husband and Brando had hooked up, but it doesn’t bother her, because she sees it as a non-factor.

However, the way Rain Pryor sees it, it’s a major factor. Now that a social media firestorm has occurred for many people who never knew Richard Pryor was openly bisexual, Rain has stepped up to slam everybody. Without naming names, she’s now taken to social media to go off -indirectly- on Quincy Jones; her stepmother, Jennifer Pryor; and all media outlets that have reported on Quincy’s and Jennifer’s interviews (we’re assuming that includes us).

**FYI: As we have previously reported, Richard Pryor was never ashamed of his bisexuality. In fact, he’s written about it and discussed it publicly. He also never hid the transgender woman he was dating back in the day.**

Rain Pryor’s Statement About Dad’s Bisexual Revelations

Rain -who was a child at the time- admitted that she knew the transgender woman her dad dated, but she believes that Quincy and her stepmom are lying about Marlon Brando. Read her statement below:

“My dad was very open with his life, so much so that news of his relationship with a trans women in the early 70s and 80s wasn’t really newsworthy nor notable. As a child I knew her, not as the trans person in our home, but the lady whom everyone accepted. So much acceptance I did not know she was Trans until recently.

There were no murmurs, nor was it tabloid news or execution by public opinion. It was just another day in our lives. It was just another identity I can assess our father was trying to navigate and process. It’s funny how during a time of huge inequality, it would have seem to matter more, and , now it’s sensationalized news, but the characters are wrong, and it’s all done to elevate the egos of sad empty people who’s money is proving it doesn’t buy happiness. However, Daddy did NOT have relations with Brando. There were no trips to his South Pacific Oasis, no flowers or love notes between. Not even a film role.

Why this sudden need to drag Daddy through the Hollywood mud? I find it tasteless and infuriating. At least get the details right, but of course we live in the age of faux news is real unless we disagree for our own agendas, and people need to stay relevant by dishing dirt.

As one of his children, I should not have to defend my brilliant and bruised father to anyone. I should be commenting on his genius comedy and the fact that he not only wrote, directed and produced … he had an office at Columbia Pictures and was once one of the Richest men. I should be sharing prolific anecdotes because he was an activist and so brutally honest. But instead I am sharing much vulnerability with some mean spirited gossip rag readers who believe anyone with money and fame. Bottom line. This man Richard Pryor, is not your Hollyweird scandal performance. He is our Daddy. He is our perfect imperfection. He is our legacy and we are most certainly his. So get a life and focus back on what’s really going on in the world. -Rain Pryor

JUNE 1995. QUINCY JONES AND RICHARD PRYOR CELEBRATING THE PUBLICATION OF ‘PRYOR CONVICTIONS’

Questions & The Obvious

Listen, we get it. Although Richard Pryor proudly spoke publicly about his bisexuality, it’s understandable why Rain would want to protect her father. However, if Rain just admitted she did not know that her father’s girlfriend was a man at that time, isn’t it a possibility that Quincy Jones and Pryor’s wife knew more about that part of his sex life than she would have at that time? Not saying it’s true, but it’s highly possible, given that adults don’t typically discuss their sex lives with their minor children, but rather with their peers.

It seems that Her dad had a nonapologetic self-assured awareness about him that allowed him to fully embrace himself regardless of what the external world thought about him. That type of vulnerable authenticity is something that we, here at ILOSM, respect about him. Rain Pryor has a lot to be proud of in her iconic daddy.
