Drena De Niro’s son, Leandro De Niro, reportedly battled with substance abuse, ultimately losing his life to an alleged overdose.

When news first spread about her son’s passing, it was reported that law enforcement were investigating it as a possible overdose, after Raphael’s body was found seated in a chair at a New York apartment, with drug paraphenelia beside him.

Robert De Niro’s Daughter Speaks Out About Grandson’s Cause Of Death

Now, Drena has confirmed her son’s cause of death in an Instagram post, where she vented about the destruction of the drug, fentanyl. She also alleges that someone intentionally sold fentanyl-laced drugs to Leandro without his knowledge:

“Someone sold him fentanyl laced pills that they knew were laced yet still sold them to him,” Drena wrote in her comments. “So for all these people still f**king around selling and buying this s***, my son is gone forever.”

Family Pays Tribute To Leandro De Niro

Raphael De Niro was the 19-year-old grandchild of Robert De Niro and his ex-wife/former model, Diahne Abbott. They adopted daughter, Drena, as an infant; and the their family seems to be a very close-knit one.

Shortly after Leandro’s death, Drena posted a heart-wrenching tribute to her son online:

“Leo my darling I love you today like the first day I held you in my arms. The same man that picked us up from the hospital when you were born drove us to the funeral home where I touched and held you for the last time . You were kindness acceptance and love and I can’t believe any of this is real YOU made everything bearable and every burden lighter. You didn’t deserve to die like this but I can only believe that God needed a strong powerful angel in their army . I’m holding you every second of every moment I’m my heart and memories until I’m with you again . My heart is broken forever . Me daddy and your family love you , I love I love you with every beat of my crying heart 💔💔💔😭🕊️🕊️🕊️”

In case y’all didn’t already know, Robert De Niro has always dated and/or married African-American women, including Raphael De Niro’s mother, actress Diahnne Abbott (76). Diahnne’s most popular roles were in the 1986 film, “JoJo Dancer, Your Life is Calling,” and in the 1976 film, “Taxi Driver,” alongside De Niro. FYI: Diahnne is Robert’s first wife, he’s recently divorced his 2nd wife, Grace Hightower, who is also Black.

Robert and Diahnne were married from 1976 to 1988 and although their union didn’t last, their unconditional love for their two children (including Diahnne’s biological daughter, Drena, who Robert adopted back in the day) remained constant.

He’s a real estate broker and founder of The De Niro Team at New York’s Douglas Elliman real estate firm and has built his name in the game as one of Manhattan’s top real estate agents. In 2016 Raphael initially gained media attention after selling $721.4 MILLION worth of high end New York properties in just one year. Also, of course his client list is jam-packed with a long list of celebs, including Renée Zellweger, Kelly Ripa, and countless others. He and his dad own several properties together, including New York’s infamous Greenwich Hotel.

Son Does NOT Want To Be Compared To His Famous Relatives

Despite his famous relatives, Raphael revealed in an interview with The Real Deal, that he didn’t even realize his parents were famous until his pops started really blowin’ up in the late 80’s:

“Not until about 1988 [Raphael said of his revelation that his dad was famous], when my dad’s career started to take off in a commercial way. Prior to that, he was more of an actor’s actor. I kind of shunned the attention. Walking around with him was sort of difficult for me. At a certain point in my 20’s, I stopped caring.”

Even though he “stopped caring” about being in the shadows of his father, Raphael still admitted that for him, it has always been of the upmost importance that he does not allow himself, nor his work, to lean on his family’s name. He admitted, in that same interview, that he only wanted to be remembered as “somebody who didn’t try to cash in on the family name, who tried to make his own way and tried to be honest and forthright in his dealings with everyone.”

His Parents Fought To Keep Him Grounded

Raphael De Niro: “I always had some kind of summer job — folding rugs in this Persian rug store, working as a production assistant for my dad or working as a busboy at Nobu [his dad is a co-founder] when it opened in 1994. Within three consecutive years from 1986, 1987, and 1988, Toukie lost three of the most important people in her life- her mother to liver cirrhosis; her brother/popular multi-millionaire fashion designer, Willi Smith to AIDS; and she and Robert De Niro’s first child together from a miscarriage – in that order.

After Toukie’s brother (pictured above with Toukie) died of AIDS, she and De Niro were 100% dedicated to using their popularity to raise money and awareness about the disease, but that’s also when she miscarried their child:

[Via People Magazine, 1989] In June 1988, while making a panel for the national AIDS quilt in her brother’s memory, Smith suffered her miscarriage. “I was under a lot of stress from my mother’s and Willi’s deaths,” says Toukie. “I realized though, there’s a time and a place for everything, and this was God’s way of telling me that this was neither the time nor the place to have a child.”

Thankfully, Toukie Smith and Robert Di Nero were later blessed with their twin sons, whom they love more than life itself.
