Demond Wilson as “Lamont Sanford” in “Sanford & Son”

Demond Wilson made all of us take a liking to his “Sanford & Son” character, “Lamont,” back in the day. The only problem was that it doesn’t seem like he ever took a liking to the character himself. We’re not sure if he feels differently now, but almost a decade after “Sanford & Son” was over, Demond Wilson did a Jet Magazine interview back in the day where he publicly went on record and detailed exactly what he hated about being on “Sanford & Son.” Also, if you haven’t heard by now, Demond is never one to filter his feelings, nor his words, which makes what he actually revealed about his dislike for such a cult classic, all the more interesting…

DEMOND SAID THE SHOW WAS “FOOLISHNESS”

Demond Wilson

Here is what Demond said regarding his character and the Sanford and Son show in it’s entirety: “You can’t say that Sanford & Son” was dramatic, was serious. It was foolishness. I didn’t watch it then and I don’t watch it now.” But wait, there’s more…

DEMOND WILSON ADMITS HE’D HAD IT AFTER THIRD SEASON

“I had had it after the third year of “Sanford & Son.” Nothing was real. When you first come into the newness of things, your first luxury car, your first Rolls Royce, your first Mercedes, your first house. All of those things seem exciting and thrilling. But after they were off, you’re faced with reality, and the reality is that your life is empty. I had worked all of those years, gearing myself for stardom but the thing that I failed to do was to have a life. I barely knew my wife and children.” -Demond Wilson, Jet

DEMOND SAYS HE REALIZED HE HAD “FALLEN AWAY FROM THE LORD”

“Sanford And Son” actors, Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson

“I had gotten to a point in my life where I was spiritually low and I’d tried just about everything else…I had fallen away from the Lord.”- Demond Wilson, Jet

So, after all of his years of admitted heroin use and other substances and after the fame and the riches, Demond decided to become a preacher and leave the limelight, which is perfectly okay. He’s still a preacher today and loves his calling, but it’s difficult to ignore the fact that had Demond not had all of the success of his “Lamont” character, his family, himself, and his preaching notoriety might not be where they are today without his “Sanford & Son” legacy.

Respect to the brotha for sharing his true feelings though. We all have regrets and his road hasn’t been an easy one, so his views are understandable somewhat, but his journey and his talent has positively touched the lives of millions across the world and maybe that’s something that should also never be forgotten, nor looked down upon by Demond nor anyone else…just saying.

If there was one thing we loved about the late, great Whitman Mayo, it was his legendary role as “Grady,” on “Sanford and Son.” Just one line from “Fred Sanford’s” ditzy friend, like “Good Googly Moogly!” had us rollin back in the day!’ “Grady” wasn’t necessarily the sharpest tool in the shed, but in REAL LIFE, Whitman most certainly was. When you see what he did for a living after “Sanford & Son,” you’ll understand why…

Shocking Careers After “Sanford & Son”

Whitman Mayo learned early on, that is was imperative for actors to have a steady stream of income in the fickle world of Hollywood. So in 1975, while still working as “Grady,” he opened up his popular Mayo Travel Service traveling agency in Inglewood, Ca.. His travel agency ran for decades and it was so successful that he also had two more branches in Dallas, TX and Washington, D.C. And get this, he actually worked at his agency, looking exactly like his scruffy “Grady” character, since he needed his beard and short ‘fro for his TV gig as well. That’s not all though…

Here’s the kicker- after his 5-year run on “Sanford and Son” was up, Whitman Mayo became a college professor at Clark Atlanta University, a counselor for delinquent male youth, and a motivational lecturer! Ain’t that a blip?!!

Whitman Mayo

In a past interview with LA Times, Mayo explained why he wanted to work with young people:

Mayo [hoped] to expand his work against the urban perils of violence, drugs and despair by founding a school of performing arts and communication skills.”I’ve got this information in my head, I’d like to challenge some young people with it via a school. Teach them how to get information and what to do with it. If you can get somebody to buy a pound of cocaine, you’ve got a skill. You can sell anything. You could do very well in life if you learned to sell something else.”

What He Loved About Working On Sanford & Son

“I’ve always played older parts. I always said that’s wonderful, I can do it for a long time. When I was 19, I played 60. I got pleasure out of studying old people. As a kid in New York I would go down to the Bowery, talked to the homeless, winos, people in parks. There was wisdom there, though a man might have a bottle of wine in his pocket. I took joy in their idiosyncrasies. Older folk are like children. They can do and say what they want and get away with it.”

Learn, Earn, & Return

Whitman Mayo

Here at ILOSM, we oftentimes chop it up about the beauty in the ‘learn, earn, and return’ phases of life that many celebrities sometimes practice.
Learn: First, one pours an extensive amount of blood, sweat and tears into learning their craft.
Earn: After years of hard work, they’re blessed to actually earn financially from they’re craft.
Return: When one has successfully peaked in their craft, the urge to share the knowledge and wisdom one has gained throughout their journey, becomes top priority, prompting then to enter into the ‘return phase’ of life, in order to help others. That seems to be the life process Whitman Mayo was able to reach. May he continue to rest peacefully after a beautiful job done here on earth.

If you love ’70s TV shows and films, you probably remember seeing the beautiful actress, Marlene Clark, in at least one of them (and she’s still beautiful by the way…scroll down for photo). She starred in several 1960’s and 1970’s films, including Night of the Cobra Woman, Switchblade Sisters, Black Mamba, and others, but her most popular role to date is probably that of “Lamont’s” (Demond Wilson) fiancée on Sanford and Son.

Just as fans were getting used to seeing “Janet” on the Sanford and Son, she was soon out of “Lamont’s” life and off the show. But in real life, Marlene (now 73) was just getting started. A few years prior to her 1976 appearances on Sanford and Son, she married one of the most popular actors of the ’70s era, but many people never even knew they had a thing going on.

Who Is Her Ex-Husband?

Embed from Getty Images

Marlene Clark’s ex-husband is the legendary Billy Dee Williams! Who would’ve thought it, right? They actually made a good couple back in the day, but their marriage didn’t last past 3 years. They wed in 1968…divorced in 1971.

For a few years after their divorce, Marlene kept it pushin’ with her acting career. In fact, she landed even more acting gigs than before, which not only included Sanford and Son, but also TV shows, like What’s Happening and Barnaby Jones.

Surprising Facts About Marlene’s Clark’s Life

Marlene Clark

Here are a few very interesting Old School facts about Marlene, from her prior interview with interviewer,Chris Poggiali:

1. Sadly, she was once nearly ‘gang raped’ by a group of little people on a movie set.

Marlene explained that while working on the set of the 1974 film, Black Mamba, she was almost raped by 24 midgets at one time, during filming! Wait…WHAT???:

“There’s a scene where I get raped by two dozen midgets, and when they jumped on me, half of them didn’t know they were supposed to be acting. They were all pulling their pants down. I said, ‘Oh no! Whoa! It’s time for me to leave, ‘cause these midgets are really trying to rape me!’ The director said ‘Marlene, wait…’ and started yelling at them, ‘No, this is play! This is pretend!’ I was looking around, like ‘Where’s the plane? Get me on that plane!’” – Marlene Clark

2. While filming the 1969 film, Putney Swope, Marlene and several of her female co-stars were tricked into doing a topless scene, but she took it all in stride.

Marlene Clark

“That was my first experience with onscreen nudity,” says [Marlene] Clark, who plays a topless stewardess in the film’s Lucky Airlines commercial spoof. “Bob Downey lied to all of us. He said, ‘Take off your tops. You’re out of focus. Nobody will see anything’ — and we were so stupid, we believed him. Of course, when I saw the movie, I was speechless. Not only was I not out of focus, I couldn’t have been more in focus!” she laughs.

Marlene Clark is no longer in the acting game and the last we heard, she was living a very quiet life in Los Angeles, Ca. She is 66 years young now and a few years back she said that she was really enjoying working at a popular L.A. restaurant as the general manager. As far as getting in front of the camera again, she says she’s open to it, but for now that chapter of her life is closed and she’s grateful for having had those experiences in entertainment that took her around the world and back.–

Demond Wilson and Redd Foxx played junk men on “Sanford and Son,” but geesh…their network didn’t have to treat them like one! Well, at least that’s what happened according to Demond Wilson a.k.a. “Lamont.” Demond revealed some shocking information about how NBC treated two of their top ranking stars back in the day and how he and Redd Foxx were NOT trying to hear that. He detailed it all in a prior interview with “On Your Mental Health.”

“Prior to Redd and I, there was only one [black show on television] there was Amos and Andy. [Other shows at the time] were not Black shows, there were Blacks IN shows. There hasn’t been an all Black sitcom in…years. They stick all of Black sitcoms today on Cable. [Redd and I] we were breaking ground, we were making history. There was no play book that they could govern Redd and I…because there hadn’t been anybody like us before.”

He continued:

“We were dressing in the men’s room. When our first show aired…[the ratings] went through the ceiling and then Redd and I started dealing with them like men. Redd and I were making history and they tried to deal with us like we were third-class field hands and we said ‘NO that’s not happening!’ I was recently back from Vietnam and Redd grew up in the streets, and so I’m from Harlem, Redd is from St. Louis…[but] he spent a lot of time in Harlem. I have been silent for over 30 years. I have not spoken out against the atrocities that were perpetrated against us.”

After Redd Foxx became completely fed up with the treatment they were enduring he left the show:

“Contrary to popular belief, Sanford and Son was never canceled; you don’t cancel a show in the top 10—Redd decided to leave.”

Demond became an ordained minister in 1984 and here is his take on the state of today’s reality entertainment and the current music industry:

“I believe that we’re living in the last days. The world to day is drunk off of the wine of inequity and I listen to some of these misogynistic rappers that make statements like we want to have the money the power and then we’ll get the respect…and there’s only power perceived, there’s no real power. If you have money you don’t have any power to do anything other than buy things. You don’t have the power to save your own souls and it’s sad. It seems as though with all of these reality shows, a lot of people have sold out and their going for the things of this world and nobody is focused today on anything other than themselves and what they can get for themselves…and even the folks that go to church, most of them are just religious spirit. You know they go in there and listen to these gospel singers who are self-centered and want to have a career and a lot of money and many of them, they’re anointed a lot of them because the anointing comes without reproach, you can be anointed and not be living close to God. And they sing these songs and the people feel good and as soon as they leave church they go right back to their self existence and it’s kind of sad the condition of the world today.”

Demond Wilson

What Demond Wilson thinks about Michael Jackson and folks treating him like a “god” ever since he was a kid:

“I’m looking at the late Michael Jackson who was a little kid from Gary, In…who just sold himself out and allowed the adversaries to transform him into nobody knows what he is and it was very sad. I look at people around the world- they’re lording this kid as though he was a God and that’s idolotry. Anything that you place in your heart…that takes the precedence over your relationship with God is idolatry…it’s an idol. My priorities for the last 25 years have been my personal relationship with God, my family, and my career- in that order and if it’s not in that order, it’s out of order.”

Whew! Demond Wilson doesn’t hold his tongue for nobody and I’m glad that he and Redd Foxx weren’t willing to take less than what they felt they deserved. The inequalities in the entertainment industry are still just as prevalent today, just ask some of today’s top actors like Taraji P. Henson, Monique, and Denzel Washington, whom have all spoken out about the lopsided justices within the entertainment world. They have come a long way, but there is still more work to do and actors like Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson helped to set the tone for that road to equal treatment for African American actors to take place now.

Do you agree with everything Demond said regarding today’s entertainment?

Demond Wilson, best known for his role as “Lamont” on Sanford and Son, once revealed some very detailed information about what he was secretly doing after the cameras stopped rolling back in the day.

At first glance, Demond Wilson, or shall I say, Reverend Wilson, probably isn’t one that you would expect to have had an illegal past, but just like the Old School saying goes: ‘We should never judge a book by it’s cover;’ and just like we always say here at ILOSM: ‘Great success cannot come without great failures.’ So for that reason, we are proud of Demond for being able to openly and honestly reveal his failures and his truths with the public.

Demond Wilson’s Confessions

In a 1985 interview with Jet Magazine, Demond Wilson talked that real talk about his addiction to heroin and how he didn’t like his work on the show. Below are excerpts from that interview.

Redd Foxx and Demond Wilson on “Sanford And Son” set

He’d had it up to HERE with “Sanford And Son”:

“I had had it after the third year of Sanford and Son. Nothing was real. When you first come into the newness of things, your first luxury car, your first Rolls Royce, your first Mercedes, your first house. All of those things seem exciting and thrilling.

But after they wear off, you’re faced with reality, and the reality is that your life is empty. I had worked all of those years, gearing myself for stardom but the thing that I failed to do was to have a life. I barely knew my wife and children. I had gotten to a point in my life where I was spiritually low and I’d tried just about everything else…I had fallen away from the Lord.

Wilson was addicted to heroin:

Before I came to California, I was on heroin. When I came from Vietnam I was on heroin. I did a film in Canada for Warner Brothers called “The Dealing” and I was on it then.

And then I went to California and I did that film with Sidney Portier, “The Organization,” and I think I kicked it right after that. I wasn’t shooting or anything, I was just snorting it.

How he kicked his drug habit:

Demond Wilson

God spoke to my heart and said “What will you do for me?’ and I said ‘Lord, what would you have me do?’ I wanted the covenant, this contract and I signed it with my spirit and my heart.

Noting that “Sanford and Son” is still shown in reruns in most parts of the country, Wilson revealed that he was never pleased with his work. [He said] “You can’t say that “Sanford and Son” was dramatic, was serious. It was foolishness. I didn’t watch it then, and I don’t watch it now.”

What is important to Wilson today is of course, his ministry and his family- [his wife Cicely, and children, Nicole, Melissa, Christopher, and Demond Jr..]

He said this about his home life: “It’s the country, the normal lifestyle for children. They are not in that plastic atmosphere of Hollywood.”

Hollywood clearly left a bad taste in Wilson’s mouth. From the outside looking in though, it is hard not to notice the fact that had it not been for Sanford and Son, we wouldn’t know Reverend Wilson today. So in my humble opinion, it sounds like Hollywood was a much needed gift and curse for Demond Wilson’s career and personal growth. It’s just the game of life: We all have to sacrifice something to gain something, because greatness never comes without a price.

Redd Foxx wasn’t the only funny one in his family, he credited his brother with that title as well. He also credited his brother for fueling him with motivation to become a comedy star, but when you see the incredible things he did for his big bro’ on Sanford and Son (and beyond), you’ll probably gain even more respect for Foxx, one of the greatest to have EVER done it.

Foxx’s brother, was oftentimes in and out of jail during Redd’s younger years and he died well before Redd Foxx did. But the Sanford & Son superstar spent the rest of his life honoring his brother…check out what Foxx once revealed about this in excerpts from a Jet Magazine interview…

What Redd Foxx Did To Honor His Brother

Redd Foxx paid homage to his late brother (pictured below) in a way that falls right in line with the thoughtful, generous brotha all of Foxx’s friends and family knew him to be:

– His brother is the REAL “Fred G. Sanford.” Foxx’s real name is John Elroy Sanford and his brother’s real name is Fred G. Sanford. Yep you read that right, Redd Foxx made sure that the “Sanford and Son” execs allowed him to name his character so that he could honor the memory of his brother, Fred, who’d died five years before the show premiered.

– Their dad’s name was Fred G. Sanford also, but Foxx didn’t name his character after him because he left his family when Redd was just 4 years old. Therefore, Foxx grew up idolizing his big brother instead.

(L) Redd Foxx; (R) Foxx’s brother, Fred G. Sanford

Foxx Explained Why He Regularly Performed In Prisons Across The Country

During the height of his career, many people thought Redd was crazy for so-called ‘wasting his time and money’ to perform for convicts in prisons. But again, Fred was very thoughtful and a man of great character, so in honor of his brother, who was also an ex-con and because he understood that prisoners were still human beings and not throw-aways, he dedicated his life to performing in prisons. Here’s what he told Jet Magazine about this back in the day:

(L) Redd Foxx; (R) Foxx’s brother, Fred G. Sanford

“My brother was a first baseman but he could never get a break in baseball at that time because of race prejudice,” Foxx [said]. Although their mother worked as a domestic for Harry Grabner, who was an executive for the White Sox baseball team, Fred couldn’t play for the Sox.

“The World was not ready for a Black player on a White team in 1937. My brother was the best first basemen in Chicago, but he never got the chance and turned to robbery,” Foxx said. “He was like a lot of other kids who turned to crime because of lack of opportunity for their natural talent.

Fred ended up earning record breaking plaques and awards while in prison for his outstanding baseball skills on the prison teams. Red Foxx explained why he was so passionate about honoring his brother by performing in prisons:

“I’ve been to almost every prison in America, but you never read about it. I’ve been to Atlanta Federal, to prisons in San Francisco and to the one in Chicago several times. I’ve been to Attica (in New York). I’ve been to Sing Sing in Rahway Penitentiary in New Jersey. I’ve been to most all of them.

“The memory of my brother is the story behind these appearances. My brother, Fred, is the one I named my TV character (on “Sanford and Son”) after. […] He always told me how important it was that inmates got some entertainment inside the prison walls. So I just dedicated myself to it. After he passed, I started doing all those shows.”

And there you have it ILOSM fam!’ Another fun fact about an Old School icon who had a heart as large as his popularity. Rest on Redd Foxx, after a job well done.

When “Esther” and “Woodrow” adopted their son on Sanford and Son, the teenager added a different dimension to the show and then after a few episodes, he never returned. Ever since his Sanford and Son days actor, Eric Laneuville, has been on various TV shows and movies, but over a period of time it seemed like Eric and his career kind of phased out. After doing a lil’ digging, we’ve learned that phasing out couldn’t be farther from the truth when it comes to Eric’s career.

Actor, Eric Laneuville, with “Fred Sanford” (Redd Foxx) on “Sanford And Son” [screen-grab]

Not only does the brotha age well, he has been consistently making bread for many years right up under our noses. He’s not that teenage kid with the afro anymore, he’s actually 69 years young now. Scroll down to see what’s up with Eric Laneuville now…

Embed from Getty Images

First off, can somebody point us in the direction of the fountain of youth Eric Laneuville is sipping from? Back in the day he often played characters that were younger than what his real age was and now we see why.

Like we mentioned earlier, Eric is now 69, but he looks more like 49! Could his anti-aging have something to do with the fact that he’s been living a well-off, stress-free life? Based on how his career has been thriving behind the scenes, probably so.

You see, Eric is a very in-demand director, who has directed far more TV shows and movies than the amount of roles he’s played…and has been doing so for the past few decades, ever since the mid ‘80s.

Embed from Getty Images

Sure we’ve seen Eric in various shows like St. Elsewhere and Room 222 back in the day, but it’s his director’s hat that has kept him in the biz. He’s directed TV shows that range from Doogie Howser, ER, and Everybody Hates Chris, to the TV show he’s currently directing, which is the ABC TV drama series, Mistresses. More recently, he’s directed the Lethal Weapon series, starring Damon Wayans and Clayne Crawford; as
well as the CBS series, FBI: Most Wanted, in addition to other television shows.

Unfortunately, Crawford has reportedly caused a ton of hostile problems and outbursts on set with Damon Wayans and some staff members. It apparently got so bad that in June 2018, Variety reported that Eric Laneuville quit the production, after he’d had it up to HERE with Crawford’s outbursts and Clayne then agreed to go to counseling. Crawford had reportedly cursed out the crew about kids being on set at a nearby swimming pool where they were filming. Crawford also reportedly called Wayans a “pu&&y” after Wayans got cut from shrapnel that mistakenly exploded during one scene. Wayans supposedly clapped back at Crawford, telling him to “suck this pu&&y’s d**k.” Geesh…can’t blame Eric for leaving off that set. But I digress.

Anywho, we would list all of his credentials, but we’d be here all night…it’s that many, so hopefully we’ve given you a good taste of Eric’s range and how many projects he’s touched and turned to platinum.

In 2014 Eric, along with Debbie Allen and Stan Lathan, were honored by the Director’s Guild of America for ‘their outstanding careers in television and their groundbreaking contributions to greater diversity behind the camera.’

As far as Eric’s personal life, he’s pretty much the type of dude who likes to fly under the media radar, but we do know that he has a son, named Sean Laneuville.

Overall it’s still difficult to get those images of “Esther” and “Woodrow’s” adopted son out my head whenever I see Eric Laneuville’s face, no matter how much older he gets. Eric has come a long way since his Sanford and Son days, but the impression he left on us Old Schoolers, as the teenager with the big ‘fro, will forever be etched in our memories.
