Actress and former Soul Train dancer, Rosie Perez, has always admitted that she had serious anger issues back in the day. She recalled one heated incident when things got way out of hand on the set of Soul Train. One such situation apparently got ugly between Rosie and her then-boss, the late, great Don Cornelius…and let’s just say that neither Don, nor Rosie didn’t play that!

In her book, Handbook For an Unpredictable Life, Rosie Perez told the story of how she went through a LOT of torment as a child and was a ward of the state of New York by the age of 3. Her experiences of physical abuse at the hands of her Mother, the nuns at the Catholic children’s home she was sent to, and having to fend for herself, is what lead her to make the decision to do what she did to respond the way that she did when Don Cornelius made her angry. She says in hindsight, she thinks she overreacted, and this is what she said happened in a prior interview with Soul Train:

Rosie Perez

Interviewer: You didn’t just fight kids at school. You fought back against the nuns. Then you got into a fight with Don Cornelius when you were on “Soul Train.” Can you tell us that story?

Rosie Perez: That was a clue that I needed help. I thought, “I’m so together. I’m in college. I’m going for my major in biochemistry. I’m fantastic,” you know? “I’m on ‘Soul Train.'” And if you just pressed the wrong button, it was, like, just a nuclear explosion would occur in me.

That’s what happened with Don Cornelius. He touched me, and pulled me, and yanked me inappropriately. I freaked out, and I just started swinging, and started grabbing things. The first thing I grabbed was a two-piece Kentucky Fried Chicken. It was a low point. I was beyond embarrassed. I was still walking out with this pathetic bravado like, “So? I don’t care. I don’t care.” By the time I get in the car, I start crying. I felt like an idiot.

Interviewer: You threw a chicken wing at Don Cornelius’ forehead?

Yes. It’s embarrassing, and it was so wrong. I thank goodness that we were able to make up before his passing. But that’s what I mean it’s like, “Am I really enjoying my life? If I am this person holding on to this anger from the past, am I really enjoying my life?” No.

Geesh…Rosie was no joke back then! I guess Don didn’t have time for a feisty 5’1″ woman hurling chicken wings at his forehead every time she got mad about something.

Seriously though, if a man puts his hands on a woman inappropriately, by all means she has every right to react however she sees fit. We don’t condone anyone “pulling, touching, or yanking” anyone, but I think what Rosie is saying is that the extent of what Don Cornelius’ action was, was not as extreme as what she processed it as in that particular moment. So, it seems like that’s probably why she’s now saying her reaction to him was wrong.

Nevertheless, the good news is that Rosie says her anger issues are under control now. Like we mentioned earlier, her anger management issues come from a deep place of childhood pain and abuse from school nuns, according to her book. So to her credit, she didn’t just come here that way…but she had to do a lot of inner soul searching and healing to overcome her past struggles. Props to her for doing the work.

Don Cornelius’ ex-wife wasn’t playing games about her come-up after his death. Not only once, but twice, she came into a large payday.

In 2001, Don Cornelius — founder, creator, and host of TV’s Soul Train — married Viktoria Chapman…the former Miss Ukraine, herself, who according to TMZ, Mr. Cornelius “despised.” International Business-Times also reported that the former beauty pageant model was an ex-adult film star at the time.

And apparently, her hustle game was on point…

Approaching Cornelius’ death, he was adamantly trying to divorce Viktoria, and he wanted it all final before his passing. The source said he wanted the turmoiled relationship behind him. In 2009, Don Cornelius stated in his divorce court docs, “I am 72 years old. I have significant health issues. I want to finalize this divorce before I die.”

Well, their divorce finally happened in 2010, two years before his death. However, that didn’t stop Viktoria Chapman Cornelius’ massive paydays. Of course, one payday came from Don’s death in the form of life insurance. Two policies, totaling $300,000.

Even though Cornelius’ death was ruled suicide, in the state of California, if the policy has been in place for more than two years, it will be paid out.

But The NEXT Payout Was MASSIVE — And For Something Totally Different

Don Cornelius with his then-wife, Viktoria Chapman

$1.85 Million?!? Although Don Cornelius‘ life insurance policies were typical, his property wasn’t. Matter of fact, his house went up for sale years after his death. The initial asking price was $2.295 million.

However, by the close of the sale, it was bought for $1.85 million in 2018. And guess who was the seller, of course. Yes. None other than Viktoria, Cornelius’ ex-wife.

According to Los Angeles Times, Cornelius’ house is described as follows:

“The Traditional-style two-story home, built in 1982, sits at the end of a gated driveway. A three-car garage faces the street. Vaulted ceilings, stained glass and sunken floors are among the features within the 3,500 square feet of living space.

The formal dining room opens to a step-down living room, which shares a two-sided flagstone fireplace with a billiards/game room,” the source continues its description. “The den features a tiled wet bar, and the kitchen has a bay window. There are four bedrooms and three bathrooms. Lawn, mature trees and patios make up the grounds.”

So, yeah. The come-up has been real for Don Cornelius’ ex-wife. She definitely maneuvered and finessed the situation to the fullest, right?

Interviewer: You threw a chicken wing at Don Cornelius’ forehead.

Yes. It’s embarrassing, and it was so wrong. I thank goodness that we were able to make up before his passing. But that’s what I mean it’s like, “Am I really enjoying my life? If I am this person holding on to this anger from the past, am I really enjoying my life?” No.

Geesh…Rosie was hardcore back then!

Overall, the good thing is that Rosie says her anger issues are under control now.

A Few Old School Fun Facts About Louie Carr

He’s Been Friends With N.E. Ever Since “Soul Train” Era

The former “Soul Train” dancer is very close friends with New Edition, whom he met when they first appeared on “Soul Train” in 1983. N.E. called Louie backstage and asked him to come on stage during their performance. But Louie knew that Don Cornelius had a rule that dancers should never go on stage with the music artists. Therefore, before New Edition’s “Soul Train” performance, N.E. and Louie devised a plan where they would keep it a secret from Don –that Louie will go on stage with them — and that Bobby would be the one to give Louie the cue when to come up on stage.

Louie said that while N.E. was performing, he was standing on the side of the stage and Bobby kept looking at him. Once Bobby gave him the signal, he flew up onto the stage and started doing his moves with N.E.. Don Cornelius just looked at Louie in disbelief.

Afterwards, Don was cool with it though, although he told Louie not to do it again. Ever since then, Louie and N.E. have remained cool ever since.

He Reps Both Of His Ethnicities To The Fullest

Louie is biracial — African American and Mexican. So he stays true to both sides of his roots through his arts. He’s a salsa dancer, and as you know, he’s a hip hop dancer and cultural influencer in the game.

If you’re from the Old School, chances are you remember seeing Damita Jo Freeman pop-locking and dominating the Soul Train dance floor back in the day. Her infamous Joe Tex and James Brown performances were crazy!

Damita Jo had a whole lot to say about a few interesting facts we never knew…such as how she used to rebel against Don Cornelius and basically piss him off. She was also not afraid to take risks…even if it would cost her her job. Check out excerpts from an interview she did with SoulTrain.com a few years ago…

Damita Jo On What It Was Like Behind The Scenes Of “Soul Train” & Why Her Mom Called Cops On The Show

Damita: “The bathrooms at the studio were the dancers’ dressing rooms. We would have lunch at 12:00 with a box of chicken and only one Coke! We had nothing else to drink for the rest of the day! We only had one Coke and one drink of water. We couldn’t even use the phone in the studio. I had to call my mom to let her know that I would be getting home late because we had no idea when we were getting out of the studio, but me and the other dancers were told we were not allowed to use the phone. I told my mom about this when I got home and she called the cops and a cop came to the set the next day and explained to Don Cornelius that since most of the dancers were minors, we had to be able to use the phone to call our parents to notify them what time we would be home. So from that time on, we were allowed to use the phone. This all happened during my first weekend at Soul Train.”

DAMITA JO NOW & WHAT ELSE SHE DID TO FURTHER PISS OFF CORNELIUS BACK THEN

Damita Jo (far right) with Jody Watley (C) and friend (L)

Damita Jo: “I remember during the second weekend I was on the show, all of the dancers had been dancing all day and were tired and thirsty. I saw two big garbage cans filled with sodas in Don Cornelius’ office at the studio. I got some of the other dancers…to bring the two garbage cans right out on to the dance floor during the middle of a dance number and I yelled, ‘Break!’ (laughs).”

On how her famous performance with Joe Tex happened, and why Don Cornelius was furious with her:

Damita Jo: “He [Joe Tex] had asked me to dance with him before his performance so when the song (“I Gotcha”) started, he pulled me up on the stage and I danced. None of my dancing was choreographed. It was impromptu. I just did my own interpretation of the song through my dance moves. I remember Don Cornelius was looking at me angry the whole time I was dancing with Joe because he didn’t want the dancers to interact with the guest stars. I just knew this would be my last time on Soul Train. But after that episode aired, the show’s ratings went up. […] It was very exciting to me. I loved being on TV! I danced with Joe Tex two other times on Soul Train.”

Damita Jo Freeman

Damita Jo Freeman expressed great gratitude for the late Don Cornelius and Dick Clark:

Damita: “Don opened up many doors. He opened doors that gave me an opportunity to slip through and help to make dreams happen. Dick Clark gave me the tools once Don opened the door for me. I applaud them both.”

Last we heard, Damita Jo Freeman was currently writing and working on children’s books. We love how she took her opportunity on Soul Train and ran with it. It’s great to see her still in business and continuing her legacy. Do your thing Ms. Freeman!

While we were waking up, eating a bowl of cereal, and watching the dancers doing the bump and pop locking down the Soul Train line, Dick Clark was rigorously working behind the scenes to shut down our favorite Saturday morning show and trying to snatch Don Cornelius’ top-rated soul spot by doing what many people in his position had been doing since as far back as we can remember. Of course Dick Clark was the man when it came to dance TV during that time with his already well-established American Bandstand that primarily catered to a Caucasian audience, but it was only after he saw what Don Cornelius was doing, by bringing soul to mainstream TV, that Dick wanted to dominate that section of Black media and cash in with his own soul version that he was going to call “Soul Unlimited.”

Dick Clark on set of “American Bandstand”

It turns out there were eventually some cut throat, takeover tactics being used behind closed doors. Here is what happened as stated in the book, The Hippest Trip In America: Soul Train and The Evolution of Culture & Style (via Daily Mail):

‘The impact of Soul Train on the television landscape was not lost on Dick Clark. By 1973, Clark was no longer just cherry-picking talent [from Soul Train] but actively trying to co-opt Cornelius’s franchise by launching his own black-themed dance show, Soul Unlimited.’

Clark launched a special episode of his copycat show and despite it being amateurish, with ‘Clark’s power in the record and television industry, including the backing of ABC, this rip-off could have proved fatal to Cornelius’s dream’, the author writes.

Clark’s power move outraged Black political leaders who along with the Black community believed that having a black-owned show on television was not only cool, but an extension of the civil rights movement.

Jesse Jackson

Led by Chicago’s Reverend Jesse Jackson, they contacted Clark and ABC executives to protest. ‘The idea that Clark, with whom blacks had always had an uneasy relationship, could kill Soul Train led to threats of an ABC boycott.’

Black leaders were joined by one of the most powerful men in the history of the black music business—and also a consultant to ABC, Clarence Avant, who went ballistic when he learned about Clark’s power move.

Avant was invited by Clark to a meeting to discuss Soul Unlimited. ‘Clark wanted my okay’, Avant recalled. ‘He wanted me to endorse his idea. I freaked out. If you do this, there’s no Don Cornelius’, I told him. We had just gotten free enough to have something on TV. ‘I told Dick Clark no – I would not endorse his show’.
Avant then set up a meeting with top ABC executives in New York and met with ABC chairman and founder Leonard Goldenson and president Eldon H. Rule.
‘I was very upset, very upset. If Dick Clark had been allowed to do it, then there would have been no Don Cornelius’, the author quotes Avant.
Avant received a threatening letter from William Morris Agency that represented Dick Clark Productions telling him to stay out of their business. But Avant was a powerful force behind the scene in the black music business in the early 1970s and would not be intimidated.

“Soul Train” dancers

Word on the Old School curb is that after Dick Clark’s plotting scheme, Don Cornelius never uttered two words to him again.

The elephant in the room for this Clark vs. Cornelius situation is obviously the issue of race and in my opinion, Don Cornelius was the absolute best person to bring Black music and Black culture to the national spotlight, because he was of that culture and therefore was able to make sure that form of entertainment was delivered to the public in it’s most purest form. Dick Clark on the other hand, was the best person to bring the young Caucasian culture to national TV with his show, American Bandstand, for the same reasons.

Not that neither couldn’t have probably successfully brought other cultures to the forefront, but when entertainment is represented in the most authentic way possible, it’s always delicate.

Don Cornelis on “Soul Train”

At least Dick wasn’t a dummy and was able to recognize a viable market when he saw one though, but I’m ecstatic that his plan didn’t work. Could you imagine growing up without Soul Train and instead having his version called “Soul Unlimited?” The thought of it even makes me cringe. What would life have been without watching The Lockers pop-locking every Saturday morning; or the dude, Louie Ski Carr, who used to hop across the stage with shades and a hat; or not being able to watch Rosie Perez and Damita Jo dance like no other?!! Don’t even get me started on that cool, laid back, soulful swag Don Cornelius brought to the show and of course the soul artists were always off the chain.

So again, I’m extremely happy Don Cornelius won that battle. May both he and Dick Clark continue to rest peacefully.

So, what’s been up with Cheryl Song? I know many of you are probably thinking to yourselves “Cheryl WHO?”…but no worries, just think back to the days of watching Soul Train and seeing the Asian lady with the long hair, twirling and kicking across the dance floor…that light bulb will instantly go off in your mind.

Now that we’re all on the same page, let’s take a look at where Cheryl has been all of these years. After her 14-year run on Soul Train from 1976-1990, it just seemed as if she fell off of the face of the earth. We were curious, so we did a lil’ digging and here’s what we found.

Cheryl did an interview with SoulTrain years ago, where she talked about the racism she experienced on the show, her career afterwards, and a few other things we found to be interesting. Below are a few excerpts from her Soul Train interview…

Cheryl On How She Ended Up Being On A Mostly African American TV Show

Cheryl: I went to a predominantly Black high school, Dorsey High School in Los Angeles. A lot of my friends in school were on Soul Train, such as Jeffrey Daniels and Jody Watley, so I was brought onto the show as a dare. It was like, “let’s see what the reaction will be when she comes onto the show.”

On The Racism She Experienced On Set

Cheryl: The first time [on Soul Train] was scary. A lot of the Black dancers did not like the idea that a non-black person was dancing on the show. I remember I was placed on the risers and some of the dancers were jealous and I remember I was placed on the risers and some of the dancers were jealous and I thought they were going to jump me. I was called a high yellow b*tch and others.

On Her Working Relationship With Don Cornelius

Cheryl: I worked for Don for a while after I danced on the show. He had opened up a dance studio in West Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard and I was one of the dance instructors. Later on I worked in the production office for Soul Train. Although I had a close relationship with Don, it was strictly business.

ST: Did you ever do the Soul Train Scramble Board?

Cheryl Song: Yes, I did! I won Afro Sheen products but I couldn’t use them. (Laughs)

Her Parents Did Not Want Her To Dance On “Soul Train”

Cheryl: It caused a lot of conflict with my parents. They wanted me to study math or science or some related field. But I wanted to study dance and I did.

Why She Left “Soul Train”

Cheryl: My partner at the time, Myron Montgomery, wanted to leave. I really didn’t want to, but I soon realized I couldn’t stay on the show forever, so I left.

Cheryl Song definitely stood out on Soul Train as being one of the most memorable dancers on the show, not only for her dancing skills, but because she represented a minority on a TV show where Black people were the majority. It’s good to see that she’s doing well in life and you never know, maybe we’ll see her on another cruise soon. Thanks for reading ILOSM family and in the words of the late, great Don Cornelius: “We wish you love, peace and SOUL!!!” (Okay that was a little corny, but I couldn’t resist…don’t judge me).

Don Cornelius with his then wife, Viktoria Chapman

Don Cornelius’ ex-wife wasn’t playing games about her come-up after his death. Not only once, but twice, she came into a large payday.

In 2001, Don Cornelius — founder, creator, and host of TV’s Soul Train — married Viktoria Chapman…Miss Ukraine, herself. According to International Business-Times, she was an ex-adult film star at the time.

Well, apparently, she hadn’t forgotten the game…

Approaching Cornelius’ death, he was adamantly trying to divorce Viktoria, and he wanted it all final before his passing. The source said he wanted the turmoiled relationship behind him.

It finally happened in 2010, two years before his death. However, that didn’t stop Viktoria Chapman Cornelius’ massive paydays. Of course, one payday came from Don’s death in the form of life insurance. Two policies, totaling $300,000.
