ILOSM family, we’ve located one of the most reclusive singers of the ’80s era- former Vanity 6 member, Susan Moonsie. Some of you may not know her by name, but if know ’80s R&B, you definitely know her face. Susan was known as the ‘innocent one’ in Prince’s girl group, which also included the late Denise “Vanity” Matthews and Brenda Bennett.  It’s been decades since we’ve last seen Susan, and after laying our eyes on her most recent public photos, we were pleasantly pleased, but not surprised, at the beautiful woman she still is today.

Susan Moonsie is now  years young. She pretty much likes to stay out of the spotlight of the entertainment world and never does interviews, so we don’t have much current info on her, but we do have a few interesting, little known fun facts about her. Check her out below…

Vanity 6: Brenda Bennett, Denise “Vanity” Matthews

Word on the Old School curb is that when Prince first formulated Vanity 6, he initially wanted his then girlfriend, Susan Moonsie, to be the lead singer, but she was too shy and didn’t want to be the lead, so they went with the late, Denise Matthews (Vanity) instead and everybody was happy.

Remember when Vanity 6 first came out, then once “Purple Rain” released, the group swapped lead singers and was renamed Apollonia 6? Well, that was allegedly because Prince and his then-girlfriend/lead singer, Denise “Vanity” Matthews, had an apparent falling out. As a result, Vanity decided to back away from the group just before “Purple Rain” filming began, so Prince hired Apollonia to fill in and they even released an Apollonia 6 album in 1984. And there you have it ILOSM family, another great memory from the long list of entertainers Prince has blessed us with throughout his years of hard work and dedication to music.

Prince

It’s never been a secret that the beloved Prince, had a way with the ladies. There was one woman in particular though, whom inside sources of Prince’s inner circle say meant so much to him, that he wrote one of his most iconic hits about her. His 1984 classic,”When Doves Cry,” was said to have been about his high school sweetheart, who was supposedly the love of his life at that time. She’s an R&B singer we all know…but what many of us didn’t know, was that the two were together for years. Get your scroll on to see who she is…

The High School Sweetheart Prince Wrote When Doves Cry About

She’s one-third of Vanity 6/ Appollonia 6Susan Moonsie! Susan was the ‘shy persona’ of the trio, and Prince actually created Vanity 6 around her when he put the group together. He allegedly wrote the song about their up-and-down relationship and it’s also alleged that Prince wrote the song, “Private Joy,” about Susan Moonsie as well.

https://vintagewoc.tumblr.com/post/157366002130/susan-moonsie-1980s

Prince’s intentions were to have Susan be the lead singer of Vanity 6, but she didn’t want to be the lead. That’s Vanity and then Appollonia were the lead singers instead.

Those who were close to Prince and Susan say their relationship was rocky– they’d break up, then make up…and then break up again, but they allegedly loved each other deeply. Like we said, Prince and Susan were high school sweethearts first – before the fame and money – so maybe that’s why their love was so unbreakable.

Unsurprisingly, their relationship often had issues because of Prince’s alleged relationships with a few other singers who came onto to the scene after Susan. Allegedly, she thought Prince was cheating on her when he started becoming attracted to singer, Denise “Vanity” Matthews, around 1983. Insiders say that’s when Susan ended the relationship, and she even became close friends with Vanity.

Prince Allegedly Had A Relationship With This Singer, Too

Then there’s this other singer whom close friends of both Prince and Susan Moonsie have allegedly said ended their relationship again, and that’s when in 1984 Prince started messing around with singer, Susannah Melvoin, (twin sister of Prince’s The Revolution guitarist, Wendy Melvoin). There is no confirmation on which relationship actually deadened Prince’s and Susan Moonsie’s relationship for good though.

In case you still aren’t familiar with Susannah Melvoin, she was the one who co-sang the popular song, “Screams of Passion,” back in the day. It was also said that in 1985, Prince wrote “Nothing Compares 2 U” (the song eventually covered by Sinead O’Connor) about Susannah Melvoin. Prince was a busy brotha, wasn’t he?

An ’80s R&B Group Also Wrote A Song About Susan Moonsie

Now, here’s one more Old School fun fact that most of us never knew. There was another popular ’80s hit that had a line in it about Prince’s ex-girlfriend, Susan Moonsie. We all know this song, it was Timex Social Club’s hit song, “Rumours.” The line about Susan Moonsie was: “Did you hear that one about Susan, some say she’s just a tease. In a camisole she’s six feet tall. She’ll knock you to your knees.” This fact was confirmed by Timex Social Club founding member/ songwriter, Marcus A. Thompson. Wow…Susan was highly sought after back in the day.

When Apollonia was introduced to the world as the lead singer of Vanity 6 -turned- Apollonia 6 in Purple Rain, she became an 1980’s legend forever.

It was 34 years ago since she made her film debut as Prince’s girlfriend and protege’ in the film. It’s also been 35 years since she first met Vanity 6 singer, Susan Moonsie. Their friendship began abruptly, just as Apollonia’s hiring was due to Prince suddenly casting her to replace his then newly ex-girlfriend – the late Denise “Vanity” Matthews – for the lead role.

The Past Love Triangle +1

Little did the world know at that time though, Prince found himself in a situation where he actually ended up working with three women he dated on one project at the same damn time. Vanity helped him write the film, then left after a heated argument. Susan was his longest lasting love out of all of them, because they were high school sweethearts and were reportedly still together during the filming of Purple Rain. Apollonia eventually became Prince’s homie-lover-friend around 1983 or so.

Well, that was then and this is now and Apollonia has maintained a close friendship with the rarely seen Vanity 6 singer, Susan. So much so, that she recently took to social media to show gratitude to her homegirl.

Apollonia Shows Love To Her Former Group Member

Here is Apollonia’s lengthy online post about Susan Moonsie…

apollonia_kotero: Susan Moonsie is EVERYTHING to me! When I stepped into the Prince World , it was this sweet Angel that literally took my hand and pointed out the land mines for me. Throughout the years, she is the only one who has been a real Lady to me consistent and has “always” been here for me and for Prince.

Susan is an honest woman. The biggest heart. She is my Dream. She is my sister. She has also shown Prince nothing but respect to this day. When Denise Vanity Matthews transitioned, Susan and I along with our beautiful sisters Jill Jones and BrendaB were there for Prince. Susan then came to LA to spend time with me. We consoled one another during these difficult times.

I admire this lady. I love this woman with all my heart. Thank you Baby Jesus for my sweet little Susan☔️ Forever grateful for you Susan Moonsie. Thank you for all that you are. #classact #lady #truth #sister #love #thisgirl6 #A6 #beautiful beyond words Did I tell you how much I love this lady ? ☔️ She gets her own chapter in my MemoirsOne last ting! Susan used to put salt in my coffee ☕️ in the a.m. on the road in LA, Minny, wherever. I fell for it every time.”

Susan Moonsie’s Rocky Relationship With High School Sweetheart, Prince

Even though Prince and Susan were in love long before the fame, they remained in love afterwards. The only reported problem was that Prince was a young man, who soon transformed from a struggling Minneapolis artist, into a mega-superstar the ladies were throwing their drawls at every chance they got.

That didn’t stop him from loving Susan Moonsie though, whom he initially wanted to play the lead role in Purple Rain and be the lead singer of Vanity 6. However, Susan was said to have refused the lead role and that’s when Prince found Vanity.

Around 1984, it was reported that Susan had just about all she could take with her relationship with Prince, due to his player ways. By then, he had already dated Vanity, Apollonia, and reportedly singer, Susan Melvoin- sister of his band member, Wendy- right up under Susan Moonsie’s nose.

As y’all can see from Apollonia’s above tribute, no amount of cheating, stopped Susan from having a great heart and developing a long lasting love for her friend, Apollonia, and her late ex, Prince.

Jill Jones in “Purple Rain”

Remember the ‘waitress’ who had the crush on “the Kid” (Prince) in the iconic 80’s classic, Purple Rain? Her name is Jill Jones and as we previously reported, she was also Prince’s background singer, released a few albums, and today she’s doing well at the age of 55.

When Purple Rain released, Jill was just 22 years old. It’s now been 33 years since the film’s release and she’s just let a lil’ secret slip through the cracks about the real deal between she and Prince. She also revealed another shocker about her connection to the iconic Gordy’s musical family.

Turns out, her character wasn’t the only one crushin’ on “the Kid,” so was she…as in real life. But based on info she recently shared online, her ‘crush’ went waaaay further than that and ultimately morphed into some sort of sexual manifestation with the beloved Purple One.

Jill’s Prince-secret came out in an Instagram post, in which she paid homage to the man who was like a stepfather to her (her mom’s longtime companion)- Motown executive, Fuller Gordy, the brother of Motown founder, Berry Gordy. By the way, that’s the other shocker. Who would’ve thought that the Purple Rain ‘waitress’ was actually linked to one of music’s most iconic families?

Jill Jones today at 55

The Secrets Jill Jones Spilled

In her Instagram Father’s Day tribute to Fuller and her mother, Jill recalled an incident where Fuller busted she and Prince sleeping in Prince’s parked car. She also alluded that they’d just finished having sex…IN the vehicle. Jill said she was a “teen” at that time, but we’re assuming she technically means she was a legal teen (18 or 19) because she reportedly met Prince at the age of 18. Their ‘scandalous’ sexcapade apparently happened a few years before they filmed Purple Rain, so that on-screen chemistry we all witnessed between them was 100% official. Read Jill’s reveal about she and Prince in the her homage to her mother and unofficial ‘stepdad,’ Fuller Gordy…

jilljonesmusic: Now imagine this man on his way to work at Motown; early am like 7:30ish tapping on Prince’s black BMW with tinted windows parked in the driveway; waking me and Prince up in his car. 😂😂😂😂( the car over heated and we decided to , nevermind long story lol) I wasn’t an easy teenager lol but I digress Happy Fathers Day Fuller Gordy. You took the time when my own father did not. I got lucky 🍀 the knowledge, wisdom and values you shared will stay with me forever. Much gratitude & love always. Rest in power to both u and my mom. ❤️🎈🙏🏾

Prince’s Intimate Relationship w/Jill’s Female Co-star

(L) Susan Moonsie; (inset photo) Vanity 6

This actually should come as no surprise because by now, we all know that the late, great Prince got around and sometimes ended up in relationships with his female colleagues. Also, Jill wasn’t the only Purple Rain actress who had a lil’ something going on with The Purple One, so did her beautiful co-star/singer, Susan Moonsie (of Vanity 6). Susan and Prince were childhood sweethearts and stayed together until their early 20’s. Geesh! Prince sure did have a way with the ladies back in the day…gotta luv it. Rest on Prince.
