From Disney, To”Greenleaf,” And “The Bobby Debarge Story”… He’s Actor, Roshon Fegan!

For those who don’t know, Roy’s son, Roshon Fegan is not only a Disney star, he also portrayed the late R&B legend, Bobby DeBarge, in “The Bobby DeBarge Story” biopic in 2019. Additionally, Roshon has been featured in a number of films, including Shake It Up and Camp Rock. He also had a recurring role on the popular series, Greenleaf.

During a prior interview, Roshon revealed what it’s like to be biracial. Being born and raised in LA, he shared details about his lifestyle and upbringing.

“I was born and raised here in Los Angeles,” Roshon began. “So this is all I know, this is my lifestyle; but I do know that there’s a lot of people in the Philippines watching every move I make and making sure they’re proud of the moves that I make; I try to keep it in my mind at all times and I try to make very, very wise decisions.”

It’s quite obvious his parent have steered him in the right direction and it looks like he’s well on his way to solidifying his name in the film industry!

Many of us know him as “Eddie King” from “The Five Heartbeats,” but his real name is Michael Wright. Wright is a helluva talent and always had the ability to not just act his characters out, but become every character he played- from the “Heartbeats,” to “Sugar Hill” and beyond. There was one major career flub that was revealed recently, which Wright regretted more than any other move he’d made in his career and it had something to do with the ’91 film “New Jack City.”

The year 2016 marked the 25th anniversary of the iconic 1991 classic, “New Jack City,” and to celebrate that, the writer of the film, Barry Michael Cooper,  revealed to Ambrosia For Heads, a few behind-the-scenes facts that we never knew. One of those facts is that the role that rapper, Ice T, played- the undercover cop, “Scotty”- was originally written specifically for Michael Wright. Here’s what Cooper explained about that:

Michael Cooper: “He [Michael Wright] was the original ‘Scotty.’ They gave it to Michael Wright. Mike said, ‘I can’t do that.’ Years later he said, ‘Barry, that was the worst mistake of my life, man.’ I said, ‘Naw. It just wasn’t the time.’ Later on [he and Wesley Snipes] played brothers in Sugar Hill. Ice-T came in. Dope rapper; I didn’t know how he was as an actor—’cause I didn’t count [Breakin’ II]. When he got on set, he’s another one that doubled down. He did a very, very good job, and has since turned to a very capable actor. He was fearless, man! That scene at the end when he said, ‘I wanna shoot you so bad my di*k is hard,’ I didn’t write that. That’s ad-lib. He came up with that!”

We could definitely see Wright nailing that cop role and it would have been a big contrast to his “Eddie King” character. Ice T did his thing with the ‘Scotty’ role, but Wright would have also brought that seasoned raw, street element to the role nonetheless. Ah well…although turning down the part was Michael Wright’s biggest regret, we all live and we learn…then keep it movin,’ just as Wright has done.

Troy Beyer- “We lived next door to Alvin Alley and he advised my mom to take me to audition for Sesame Street. It was such a strange time in my life because although I was just four, in many ways I already felt like my mother’s keeper. Whoopi Goldberg, then known as Karen Johnson, was my babysitter [and] used to have to take me to Sesame Street when mom was too high off acid and opiates to get it together.”

Repeated Abuse

Although she was having a winning career on successful on Sesame Street, Troy was losing at home- losing self-worth, losing dignity, and losing her childhood and her innocence… all at the hands of her Mom’s husband at just four years old:

T.B.- “Here I was starring in one of the most innocent childhood shows in history while being molested by my stepfather. When I look back at pictures of myself from that time on set, my solidarity is so obvious. It didn’t take long after for me to be placed in juvenile hall after being taken away from my mother for child neglect. At that time, there were no foster homes available, so I was subjected to coexist basically with criminals. I shuffled through juvenile hall to the foster care system while constantly being by [a] psychologist. My only solace was that I loved my social worker.”

LIFE WITH BIOLOGICAL DAD WAS BETTER THAN BEING WITH HER MOM

T.B.: “In 1977, I moved to Idaho and clearly learned I was black in spite of black people clearly teasing me for being white. I loved having a normal life in comparison to past life with mom. I cannot say that my life in Idaho with my father was wonderful, but it surely wasn’t what I went through with my mom.”

Just about a decade later, Troy Beyer had found a way to turn her tragedies into triumph. She became a star by 1986, starring as the daughter of Diahann Carroll’s daughter in the Dynasty series. She went on to have several more roles, including her unforgettable role as “Eddie King’s” wife in the 1991 classic, The Five Heartbeats. Talk about turning one’s life around and beating the odds! Troy Beyer has done just that.

I Love Old School Music family…how many of you remember the little girl who was sangin’ (yes we said sangin’…not singing, there’s a difference 😊) in The Five Heartbeats? Her name is Tressa Thomas, and she was 12 years old when she starred in the film and killed it with her version of “We Haven’t Finished Yet?” She stole the show as Robert Townsend’s character “Duck’s” baby sister.

Well, in case you were wondering where she’s been and what she’s doing now, we’ve found her and she is now 43 years old, still doing her thing.  Check her out now…

Alright before we go any further, can we talk about how good Tressa is looking now? Her all grown up now…yes she is!

She still performs live and releases new music periodically. Below is a performance of the “National Anthem” by Tressa. She still has her soulful sound!

Since Tressa made her debut in The Five Heartbeats, she’s been continuing her musical and acting career. Her other film credits include Flatliners and Message In A Bottle. She has shared stages with Patti LaBelle, Gladys Knight, Stevie Wonder, Howard Hewett, Dionne Warwick, Earth, Wind, & Fire and Run DMC, and many more throughout her career. In 2001, Tressa did an international tour performing for Royal Caribbean Entertainment (Cruise Lines) as the lead female vocalist. In 2007, she produced The Yesterday Pool, a short film starring Academy Award winner, Mickey Rooney. Tressa starred in “Back To Bacharach And David” at Fonda Theater in Hollywood, CA.

In addition to her music and acting careers, Tressa is also getting her modeling-on…having been featured in various magazines, such as Plus Model Mag, Ebony, Jet, Venus Divas Mag, Variety Mag, for E’Lon Cosmetics as their spokes model. Tressa is currently the owner of her shoe line, Porter and Elaine; as well as her custom graphics design company, Boss Chick HB.

Now, we previously missed this one, but did you realize that was Tressa performing in the made-for-TV movie, The Little Richard Story? Yeah, we didn’t either, but it was her, she played singer, Ruth Brown.

It looks like Tressa has capitalized off of her childhood stardom well. She is a beautiful woman, with a beautiful voice and a dedication to her craft. All too often entertainers who were in her position back in the day, don’t get the spotlight they deserve in today’s entertainment climate. So we wanted to shine a light on the Tressa Thomas- the singer, actress, producer, model, and business woman- and we wish her much continued success in all of her future endeavors.

He hasn’t changed a bit. He’s just another example of how black definitely doesn’t crack! He looks exactly the same. John was actually part of a ReelBlack special celebrating the inaugural release of Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It.

Although John is known for his memorable role in the ever-popular 1991 musical drama, he revealed fans see him out in public and still refer to him as “Greer Childs” from “She’s Gotta Have It,” because he hasn’t changed at all.

During the exclusive interview, he revealed one of the pitfalls he endured during his career. Apparently, the sex symbol role of Greer came with many pros and cons that ultimately impacted his personal life. Although most guys would probably love all of the fame and attention that comes with being a sex symbol, John revealed how it actually ruined many of his personal relationships.

For years, his career flourished but around the year 2000, he decided to take a break from acting due to a number of personal obstacles, including the death of a loved one and a breakup. John admitted that acting just wasn’t fulfilling anymore. So, he stepped away from the limelight to reevaluate his life. But, once he made it back to the stage, he realized his life calling.

Instead of focusing on the cameras and the big screen, he developed a new love for live audiences. But, now John is heading back to film. Next year, he has three films scheduled to be released. Be on the look-out for his upcoming projects, Rebirth of Crowning Glory, American Zealot and Again Comes The Rain. Wishing John Canada Terrell much continued success going forward.

If you’ve ever seen The Five Heartbeats movie, then you probably remember “Eddie King’s” wife, “Babydoll,” who stuck by him through thick and thin. “Babydoll” a.k.a. actress, Troy Beyer, opened up about her life and a lot of horrific and great memories poured out…some of them are just outright incomprehensible and no child should EVER have to go through that.
