We love The Fugees, here at I Love Old School Music. Members, Wyclef Jean, Pras, and Lauryn Hill were giving us real hip-hop…and at times, real R&B as well (thanks to Lauryn’s beautiful voice). But as we already know, things eventually went sour among them.

Before their demise though, it was nothing but love. And to show just how much of a bond they had, in recent years, Pras shared that Lauryn Hill turned down a TON of money to stand by her group members. She also made them lose even more, according to Pras, but we’ll get to that in a minute. During a radio interview with Ed Lover, Pras broke down what she did for them and said that’s why he’ll always love and respect her. Check out what happened below.

Lauryn Turned Down Millions For Her Group Members

Pras tells Ed Lover: “No matter what Lauryn Hill ever do, or say, I will always have so much respect for her because I’mma tell you something she did in the very beginning of our career. So, back when we [were] kinda like just getting on, Penny Hardaway (former NBA player), when he was hot…he goes to the manager and says ‘I want Lauryn Hill, to do a commercial with her. … I don’t want the guys [Pras and Wyclef], I want Lauryn.’ She [Lauryn] was like, ‘Well, I’m not doing anything without my crew…you gotta take ALL of us. You can’t just pluck me away.’ “

But then Pras said the ad agency came back with an offer of $3 MILLION for Lauryn, to entice her to do the commercial with Penny Hardaway, without Pras and Wyclef and she still gave them a ‘Hell no’…

‘Yo, here’s $3 million…you wanna break it off with the guys [Pras and Wyclef], we don’t give a fu*k; but we don’t want these mothafu**as on the set. Tell them Haitian ni&&as to go back to Haiti, but we want you,’ Pras said the ad agency told Lauryn. Then he said, “She turned it down. THAT’s honorable. So that means what happened at that time we couldn’t come back together (after the Fugees broke up) that was pain,” explained Pras.

Why Lauryn Hill Recently Turned Down $90 MILLION!

Although The Fugees have recently reunited as of September 2021 for the first time in 15 years, according to Pras, Hill passed up a prior opportunity to do so…and it was a very lucrative one.

Pras: “Ms. Hill…she doesn’t care about none of that sh*t, all she cares about is truth and respect and if you don’t have that, that woman would rather go into a place of misery…[…] Her thing is, ‘When we first started we were equal. It didn’t matter if the world was bowing down to me and saying -Y’all two niggas need to go back to Haiti.- NO, I don’t give a f*&k, I’m rockin’ with you ni&&as….that don’t mean nothing to me.'”

“Five months ago we got an offer to make 90 million dollars to go on the road…they were like y’all don’t even got to do a record, let’s go on the road. She [Lauryn] was like ‘No,’ and I respect that.

Then Pras explained why she said no and it has a lot to do with the tension that still cuts extremely deep between Lauryn and Wyclef:

Pras: “The worst thing is when you’re in a room with someone and y’all don’t gel with each other and you gotta work with each other. That’s prison… With her, it doesn’t matter if she’s BROKE, if she’s not in that space, she’s not fuc&in with it! And I gotta respect that to a certain extent, even though I’m like “Sh*t, I could use that extra 22 million” (referring to his portion of the 90 mill’ they would have taken home).

Lauryn Hill recently stated her reasons for deciding to tour with the group again in 2021, for their 25th anniversary:

Via LA Times – “The Fugees have a complex but impactful history,” Hill said in a statement, unaware that it was the album’s 25th anniversary until someone brought it to her attention. “I decided to honor this significant project, its anniversary, and the fans who appreciated the music by creating a peaceful platform where we could unite, perform the music we loved, and set an example of reconciliation for the world.”

Wow, when it comes to Ms. Hill…talk about a stand up woman! For $90 million, some folks would be willing to backstab their own Mother…just sayin.’

For the past few decades most of us, true Lauryn Hill fans, have been waiting for her to drop a new album and show these so called new-school singers/rappers out here how it’s really done. It’s been 23 years since she dropped her diamond (10 million) selling album, Mis-education of Lauryn Hill and we think it’s about time for a new one.

Well, we’ll probably just be waiting, according to Lauryn’s former Fugees group member, Pras. In an interview with Vlad TV, Pras broke down exactly why that wish may only be a dream and not reality. Check out what he said below…

“She just felt uninspired. I’m going to say this to you. Some people money is a driving force for them. For her, money isn’t a driving force for her. If she had a billion dollars, if she had one dollar she would’ve done it the exact same way….When she says she wasn’t…she’s been uninspired she means that. This is a woman who she has to feel inspired to create, and if she doesn’t feel inspired she’s not going to create. Because that’s what she gets her source of energy from. When we did ‘The Score’ we were inspired from what was happening. You talking Snoop, Pac, Jay, Biggie, Total; you had so much great sh*t happening that we were like we want to get in that game. Let’s bring something to the game. Let’s bring The refugee Fugees style to the table,” said Pras.

So in other words, because Lauryn Hill is bored with, and uninspired by the current state of R&B and hip hop (understandably so), “that thing, that thing” we want from her…she won’t be giving anytime soon, or probably ever. That was an “all so simple” summarization of a very complex artist and we’re glad Pras broke that down for us. Everyone knows Lauryn Hill has a beautiful, unique voice that is still unmatched after more than 20 years in the game. Even today, her album, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill, remains a classic to many fans. But not only has Lauryn impacted fans with her amazing voice, she also touched the hearts of musicians and other celebrities she’s met along the way. Wyclef Jean is one musician, in particular. In fact, the “Gone Til’ November” singer revealed what it was like to meet Lauryn Hill for the very first time, as well as why he chose his now-wife over Lauryn…while he was dating them both.

Meeting Lauryn:

On an episode of Unsung, Wyclef shared details about his rise to stardom, his music career, and his transition to politics. So, of course most fans know you can’t think of Wyclef and not think of The Fugees. Wyclef explained how he and Pras crossed paths with Lauryn, which ultimately led to the birth of The Fugees. He admitted that he was completely taken with Lauryn’s talent.

“Pras called me one afternoon and said he needed me to come down to this studio to lay down some vocals. ‘I’m here with those two girls I told you about in this group we callin’ Tyme. We doin’ a track,’ Wyclef said. ‘I need you to come sing some of that reggae stuff you’re so good at.’ […] The two girls were named Marcy and Lauryn, and the minute I saw Lauryn Hill, I couldn’t believe my eyes. She was in the vocal booth, and when she came through the door to say hello I experienced that feeling when everything stops for a second. It’s a moment I’ll never forget.”

Wyclef On He Chose To Marry Wife Instead Of Lauryn:

In addition to her musical talent, Wyclef was also attracted to Lauryn and as most of us know by now, the attraction eventually led to more than just hit records. Wyclef cheated on his wife, Claudinette Jean, with Lauryn Hill and their whirlwind romance was the beginning of the end for The Fugees. For years, Wyclef has been blamed for the group’s downfall. A few years ago, Wyclef released a book titled, Purpose: An Immigrant’s Story, where he opened up about the affair. He already knew how fans would react, but also revealed it was all much more complicated than he could put into words:

It was a passionate roller coaster ride, every single day […] The real Lauryn is much more complicated than what comes through in her art. Same goes for me.”

ILOSM family it has been a helluva 24+ hours for Fugees rapper/singer, Wyclef Jean. He’s been harassed, handcuffed, apologized to, and according to ‘Clef, also lied on by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department all within hours apart from each other.

Wyclef has just spoken out for the second time in two days to now address the wack apology the L.A. Sheriff’s Department publicly issued. We’ll explain why it’s wack in a minute. But for those who didn’t catch what went down between ‘Clef and the L.A. deputies, here’s a quick recap:

First Came The Arrest & Wyclef’s Blasting Of Deputies’ Misconduct

In the wee hours of Tuesday morning (3-21-17), Wyclef was wrongly arrested, harassed, and placed in the back of a cop car by deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, who ignored his repeated requests about why he was being detained. It turned out to be a case of mistaken identity in a robbery case. During the incident, ‘Clef’s associate recorded the ordeal as ‘Clef maintained his composure, yet boldly spoke to the camera, giving precise details of what was going down, while placed in handcuffs. He also made it clear to the deputies that he was going to sue the department for their misconduct.

He then posted the videos on Instagram to blast the deputies…

What just happened to him on the streets of Los Angeles, Ca. has him heated. He was wrongly arrested, harassed, and detained by deputies of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department in what appears to be a very race related, unwarranted issue that turned out to be a case of mistaken identity!

Wyclef thought quick on his feet though as he was being placed in handcuffs, by having one of his associates record the ridiculous incident. He boldly spoke to the camera, giving a play by play description of what was going down in two Instagram videos, as the deputies repeatedly ignored his words and proceeded with their harassment.

Wyclef: “I will sue…”

Throughout the entire ordeal, Wyclef, was clearly pissed the hell off, but his composure remained in tact the entire time. In his IG videos, Wyclef referred to the officers as ‘the LAPD,’ but it was later discovered that they are actually L.A. County Sheriff deputies. Wyclef tried to tell the deputies that he was a recording artist, on his way home from the studio. They ignored him. He then told them “I am suing…” They ignored him. He then turned to the camera and let people know that when he was stopped, the first thing the deputies did was take his Haitian bandana he was wearing around his forehead, then handcuffed him, prior to getting information as to who he is, or why he was in the area…

Wyclef’s Second Police Harassment Video:

wyclefjean: “I was asked by the police to put my hands up. Then I was told do not move. I was instantly hand cuffed before being asked to identify myself and before being told why. In the process I said my name and told them they have wrong person. They proceeded to ignore me and I was treated like a criminal. I am sure no father wants his sons or daughters to see him in Handcuffs especially if he is innocent. As some one who has law enforcers in my family, I was appalled by the behavior of the LAPD.”

What in the world did his Haitian flag have to do with his arrest? Hmmm…not sure, maybe a look into Trump’s vow to crack down on immigration may put us in the right direction to find that answer. But then again, maybe not…because Sandra Bland (the young lady who was wrongly arrested and harassed by a Waller County, TX officer during a traffic stop, then mysteriously died in custody)….and Philando Castille (the young man who was brutally murdered during a traffic stop by a Minnesota police officer, in front of his children, as his girlfriend bravely streamed it live on Facebook) were not wearing Haitian bandanas, like Wyclef. The only obvious commonality they all have is being born with brown skin…

It’s no secret that the L.A.’s law enforcement systems has had their fair share of racial profiling incidents for many years. Wyclef Jean is probably just another one to add to their record books. However, this time we can rest assured that Wyclef, the man who once ran for President of his native country, Haiti (he came to the U.S. as an immigrant when he was 9), will not let this situation go unnoticed. He will more than likely do what he said in the video, and sue the brakes off of the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department over this atrocity.
