There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the ’70s classic, The Mack. There was murder, there was beef with the Black Panthers and there was mayhem. The film was based on the real life pimp and drug dealer from Oakland, Ca., Frank Ward.

Max Julien’s role as “Goldie” was the film’s portrayal of Frank, who was known as one of the biggest African American dope dealers and pimps of that era. The movie was shot in his “territory” and the only problem was that the Black Panthers also controlled a large amount of Oakland , so things got ugly real quick. Here are the details of what happened:

Via Soul Train: “The fact that the film got made is a miracle,” said the film’s director Michael Campus in the documentary Mackin’ Ain’t Easy, about the making of The Mack.

The movie was set in Oakland, which in the early seventies was a dangerous place. Still, Campus wanted it to be the setting of the film.

Ted Ward, actor Max Julien, actor Dick Anthony Williams, and the real life “Mack,” Frank Ward pictured far right (screeen-grab)

According to Soul Train, the underworld scene of the Oakland area was controlled by four brothers, with the last name Ward. Max Julian described Frank Ward as “a serious criminal,” in the documentary. It was also revealed that the film crew and Campus had to seek special permission from Ward, to be able to film in the neighborhood.

“Were the Ward brothers going to back us?” Campus wondered. “Frank asked, ‘What’s in it for [me]?’ I immediately told him he had to be in the film. Then he said, ‘Okay man, let’s understand one thing. I take you in my world, you take me in your world. I show you what I do, you show me what you do.’ Frank opened up all the doors. I could go anywhere in Oakland with Frank’s permission.”

After Ward gave them the okay on The Mack, the crew had access to locations that were like a golden treasure for that type of film- underground barbershops, fancy nightclubs, pool halls, etc. The pimps, women, homeless people, and junkies shown in the film were all authentic and supplied by Ward, under his close supervision. -via Soul Train

Black Panther founders, (L) Bobby Seale and (R) Huey P.
There were a ton of problems that transpired on set, with the Black Panther Party members:

The producer, Harvey Bernard, said that Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panthers, barged into his hotel room one night and informed him that he and his crew were shooting in “Black Panther territory.” But Bernard was not worried since he had the Ward Brothers to protect him. Black Panthers founder Huey P. Newton wanted $5,000 in exchange for making the film in their territory. “But the check bounced,” Bernard said. The next day when the crew was shooting, bottles and glass started raining down from rooftops and the crew ducked for cover and scattered.

“Frank was so enraged…he felt this was his picture and we were under his protection, not the Panthers. He stayed around us to make sure things were right. We never knew what was going to happen from day to day and if we were going to complete this picture,” said Campus. -via Soul Train

Then things took a turn for the worse after Max Julien attempted to calm the tension down. Max was really cool with Huey P. Newton, so he met up with him to act as a middle man and ease situation. But then this happened:

Frank Ward was shot in the back of the head and killed as he sat in his Rolls Royce with his ‘bottom woman,’ whom was also killed. Many blamed the Panthers for the hit on Frank Ward and without Ward’s protection, the filmmakers and cast had to retreat to safer grounds in L.A. to finish filming. The Mack was dedicated to Frank Ward, but Black Panther leader, Huey P. Newton, still insisted that the premiere benefit the Panthers’ milk fund in Oakland city. -via Soul Train

After Frank Ward’s funeral was over, his brother and partner in crime, Ted Ward, allegedly fled to New Orleans, La., never to be heard from again.

It was never confirmed who actually killed Frank Ward and the young lady. Sadly, Frank was actually starting to go into legitimate business, but unfortunately when you live that lifestyle, there’s no time limit in the code of the streets.

There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the 70’s classic, The Mack.

Newton

Richard Pryor

The year was 1973 and fans couldn’t wait to see The Mack in theaters. The movie is now a classic, but the road to get it filmed was a long, rocky one…according to what The Mack’s lead actor, Max Julien; and the film’s producer/director, Michael Campus, once revealed. The beloved Richard Pryor was at the center of the conflict and the ruckus he reportedly caused on set was in true Pryor form. So we weren’t necessarily shocked when we heard about this, but it’s still entertaining nonetheless.

Pryor Urinated On Female Co-Star?

Actress, Shelly Winters

Pryor almost didn’t make it into “The Mack” cast, until his good friend, Max, pushed for him to be in it. After which, Pryor’s career began to get back on track.

Why were there reservations about hiring Pryor for The Mack? Because word on the old school curb is that he –get this– urinated on his Caucasian co-actress, Shelley Winters, while filming their movie, Wild In The Streets, 5 years earlier. Wild In The Streets was Pryor’s first movie and after that alleged piss fest, not many in Hollywood actually wanted to work with him ever again.

“The Mack” Director Didn’t Want To Cast Pryor…But Max Julien Stepped In

According to Max Julien, The Mack producer, Harvey Bernhard, absolutely did not want to cast Pryor in the film because of Pryor’s untamed behavior and that infamous urinating incident.

“The Mack” director, Michael Campus

The Mack’s director, Michael Campus, also hated the thought of working with Richard Pryor because of his reputation and he actually described his time on the set with Pryor as “difficult.” Campus said that on many occasions while filming, Pryor showed up to the set high as a kite, and sometimes he was a no-show altogether. Campus also admitted that he was shocked at how well Pryor performed in the film, because on camera Pryor came to life like a true professional and you couldn’t even tell that he was high during taping, once the finished product was completed.

The reason why The Mack saved Pryor’s career, is because it was a huge box-office hit and prompted other Hollywood big wigs to want to be in the ‘Pryor business’ again. He was then able to pull his career and reputation out of a declining spiral. Not sure if Pryor and Shelley Winters ever made up though.

(L) Max Julien as “Goldie” and (R) Richard Pryor as “Slim” on set of “The Mack” film, 1973

As you can see, Richard Pryor had become somewhat of an outcast in Hollywood, following his reported piss-gate incident. Not only was that obviously a disrespectful thing to do to another human being, but there was Pryor – an African American man – peeing on a Caucasian woman’s head during the civil rights era in 1968! Geesh! Richard P. didn’t give a you-know-what.

Here are a few more fun facts about The Mack movie:

– According to what Max Julien stated on the DVD commentary, Richard Pryor and producer, Harvey Bernhard, had a heated argument during filming. Later that night, Pryor was going to Bernhard’s hotel room to attack him with a sock filled with ball bearings, until Julien calmed Pryor down.

– The infamous Player’s Ball scene was largely Richard Pryor’s idea. Other parts of the story Pryor took directly from people he’d known who were living that lifestyle a the time. That included real life incidents of seeing gangsters put a man in the trunk of a car with rats; and forcing a drug pusher to stab himself at gun point.

– The final draft of the script was written by Max Julien, Richard Pryor, and Michael Campus.

Those were all colorful moments in the ever-so-colorful legacy of the late, great Richard Pryor. We still love the man’s work, but even he, himself, had publicly admitted to just how wild his past endeavors in his professional and personal lives really were.

There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the 70’s classic, The Mack.

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-7695" src="https://www.iloveoldschoolmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/bobby-seale-and-huey-p.jpg" alt="Black Panthers Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton (via Pinterest)

The year was 1973 and everybody couldn’t wait to go see The Mack in theaters. The movie is now a CLASSIC but the ride to get it made was a long, rocky one according to what the star of the film, Max Julien, and the producer and director of The Mack said. The beloved Richard Pryor was at the center of the conflict and what he did was in true wild Richard Pryor form, so we weren’t necessarily shocked when we heard about this, but it was still entertaining to hear nonetheless.

Here is why Richard almost didn’t even make it into the cast of The Mack, until his good friend, Max, stepped in and pushed for him to be in it, after which, Pryor’s career began to get back on track:

Richard Pryor (L) and Max Julien (R) in “The Mack,” 1973

Word on the old school curb is that Richard Pryor urinated on his Caucasian co-actress, Shelley Winters, during filming of their 1968 film, Wild In The Streets. That was Pryor’s first movie and after that, not many in Hollywood actually wanted to work with him.

According to Max Julien, The Mack producer, Harvey Bernhard, absolutely did not want to cast Pryor in the film because of Pryor’s untamed behavior and that infamous urinating incident.

The year was 1968 when Richard Pryor’s career had just started and that was the same year his career almost ended. He did the unthinkable to one of his co-stars and it had gotten him shunned in Hollywood for years. That was until his opportunity to appear in the 1973 film, The Mack came along.

The Mack is now a classic, but the ride to get it made was a long, rocky one according to what the star of the film, Max Julien, and the producer and director of The Mack said. The beloved Richard Pryor was at the center of the conflict and what he did prior to get him shunned in the industry was in true, wild Richard Pryor form, so we weren’t necessarily shocked when we heard about this, but it was still entertaining to hear nonetheless.

According to Max Julien, The Mack producer, Harvey Bernhard, absolutely did not want to cast Pryor in the film because of Pryor’s untamed behavior and that infamous urinating incident.

Pryor had become somewhat of an outcast in Hollywood after that incident, because keep in mind that not only was that a disrespectful thing to do to another human being, but here was Pryor- an African American man, peeing on a Caucasian woman’s head during the civil rights era! He’s lucky all he got was outcast during that time…y’all know what I’m talking about.

The reason why The Mack save Pryor’s career is because it was a huge box-office hit and that is what prompted other Hollywood big wigs to want to be in the Pryor business again. He was then able to pull his career and part of his reputation out of that declining spiral.

We don’t know if Pryor and Shelley Winters ever made up though.
Yeah ILOSM family, this is just yet another colorful moment in the ever-so-colorful legacy of the late great Richard Pryor. We still love the man’s work, but even he himself has admitted, and even written a book about just how wild his past endeavors in his professional and personal lives really were.

Here are a few other fun facts that we found interesting about The Mack movie:

– According to Max Julien on the DVD commentary, Richard Pryor and producer Harvey Bernhard had a heated argument during filming. Later that night, Pryor was going to Bernhard’s hotel room to attack him with a sock filled with ball bearings until Julien calmed Pryor down.

– The infamous Player’s Ball scene was largely Richard Pryor’s idea. Other parts of the story Pryor took directly from people who he knew living this lifestyle. These included putting a man in the trunk of a car with rats and forcing a drug pusher to stab himself at gun point.

– The final draft of the script was written by Max Julien, Richard Pryor, and Michael Campus.

There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the 70’s classic, The Mack.

Ted Ward, actor Max Julien, actor Dick Anthony Williams, and the real life “Mack,” Frank Ward pictured far right (screen grab)

<img decoding="async" class="wp-image-7695" src="https://www.iloveoldschoolmusic.com/wp-content/uploads/bobby-seale-and-huey-p.jpg" alt="Black Panthers Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton (via Pinterest)
