A few years ago, there was a very popular meme featuring New Orleans hip hop legend, Bryan ‘Birdman’ Williams, where he was asking for folks to put some ‘respeck’ (just as it’s spelled) on his name. It was in reference to the now infamous interview he’d done during the highly popular radio show, The Breakfast Club, when he decided to check the hostss for what he felt was disrespect over the years. Since that epic interview, he hasn’t really spoken about why he acted the way he did. Also, since Birdman (or Baby as he’s ‘respeckfully’ known throughout the rap game) presumably answers to no one, people have never gotten clarity on the matter. Now, years later, Birdman is clearing up his stance on morning radio talk shows and how he feels about them, and of course since he is the New Orleans OG -who everyone knows and loves- the Cash Money mogul held nothing back in his response.

Classic Hip Hop Moment

The interview took place back in 2016, when The Breakfast Club hosts invited Birdman for an interview on the show. However, when they initially believed Birdman would likely be attending alone, he came through with a whole Goon Squad- a move the hosts probably thought was weird. At that time, Birdman kept it very short with his reason for participating in the interview. During his tense exchanges with hosts, Angela Yee, DJ Envy, and Charlamagne Tha God, he snaped at them with this brief proclamation:.

“Stop playin’ with my name … Put some respeck on my name.”

Birdman never made it clear, exactly what he was so pissed off about. When the hosts tried to ask for an explanation, Birdman simply said, “I wanted to look you right in the face, like a man, and tell you how I feel.”

Afterwards, Birdman and his crew rolled out, and the interview was never referenced again. Until now….

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
