No one slays like Erykah Badu. She’s in her own lane and no one arrives like Badu. For the second year in a row, Ms. Badu has been the host of the Soul Train Music Awards. To say that she’s over the top, would be an understatement. Arriving to the red carpet, resembled an angel from the 70’s, as she rocked her signature top hat. Dressed in all white, Badu made a theatrical appearance, rockin’ her sky-high platform boots, with a fur-adorned coat. Not only did she wear an extremely large hat, she wore a gold accessory on top of that bad boy. The look that she rocked on the red carpet was one of many looks at the Soul Train Music Awards.

Badu’s outfit was from the avant garde designer, Thom Browne’s, SS18 collection.  Badu’s not his only celebrity client though, our girl, Solange, also wore a look by him to the most recent Met Gala.

Badu’s Daughters Are Getting So BIG Now!

Joining her on the red carpet, Badu brought along her 2 daughters, 13 year-old Puma Sabti Curry and  8 year-old Mars Merkaba Thedford. Puma is Badu’s middle child by the legendary N.W.A. affiliated rapper, The D.O.C., and Mars is the daughter of New Orleans bred rapper, Jay Electronica. Like their mother, they’re beautiful with their own sense of style.

Mars and Puma walked the red carpet with their mother, Erykah Badu, at the 2017 Soul Train Awards.

As we previously reported, Puma can SANG like her momma. But at this point, it’s unclear if Badu’s daughters desire to pursue a musical career like their mother. However, it wouldn’t be surprising, given their musical DNA from both sides of the coin. In an interview with ABC News , Badu spoke about her family and children, and revealed that she’ll support her kids regardless of whether or not they decide to pursue a career in entertainment.  She revealed that Mars is a gymnast and very into sports, but her middle baby, Puma, is her clone.

My middle one, she is me. And I don’t know how that happened, but she, is atomically me, chemically me. Whatever they want to do, I’ll support them. They don’t have to be little mes. They can do whatever they want. I’m just grateful that they support me while I do this. Mama goes to work and they’re understanding and they’re grateful. This is the life they understand and know. If they choose to be an entertainer or performer I would support them wholeheartedly the same way they’ve supported me.

Known for her eclectic style and unique sound, Erykah Badu is one of a kind. While the Dallas native has become a cultural icon since bursting on the scene with her debut album, Baduizm, back in 1997, her biggest joy is being a mother to all three of her mini-me’s: Son, Seven; and daughters, Puma and Mars.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
