Sonia’s looking great at 65 years young! She’s clearly been taking care of her health. Go ‘head “Maria!”

We also salute her for being one of the first Latinas cast on a mainstream TV show back in the day. She started Sesame Street in 1971 and became a season regular in 1974. Sonia’s also a writer on Sesame Street and has won 15 Emmys for her work on the show.

Check out this video clip of Sonia recently talking about her time on Sesame Street and the importance of having people of color on TV at the time when she started on the show:

Thanks for the memories “Maria!”

Here’s an Old School fun fact about Sonia:
The little baby who played “Maria’s” and “Luis'” daughter on the show, was actually Sonia’s real-life daughter with her husband, Richard Reagan. Her daughter’s name is Gabriela Rose Reagan (b. April 6, 1988) and on Sesame street her name was “Gabi” and she started in season 21. Below is a pic of baby Gabriela with “Maria,” “Luis,” and “Big Bird.”

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
