“I don’t even know what to make of it. I hope that everything works out in the end and everybody basically comes out unscathed,” Latifiah said. Chicago PD initially treated Smollett as the victim of a hate crime and spent weeks investigating the incident as such.

But Smollett was arrested on February 21, after prosecutors shared their evidence publicly. They say he was filmed on surveillance cameras meeting with the brothers days before the attack to arrange it.

They also claim he took the two Nigerian brothers on a run-through of how he wanted them to attack him.  Smollett paid one of the brothers with a check that was for $3,500. It said in the memo section that it was for personal training. Police say he deliberately backdated it to make it appear that it was for training.

Smollett will return to court on March 14.
