R. Kelly & Drea’s Daughter Ended Up In Psych Ward After Coming Out…

At the time when Jaah Kelly decided to come out as transgender, things didn’t get better for her. At just fourteen years old, Jaah revealed that she fell into a deep depression and was hospitalized in a psych ward of a mental hospital for three weeks, but refused to disclose any further info about her stay there. Still, the reason why she came out was because she wasn’t sure exactly how to identify while dealing with her feelings. In an interview with Paper Magazine (via Essence) she said:

“When I posted that video, I was so scared,” Jaah told the magazine. “When I was younger, I always felt like I had to make a choice. I knew that I was a girl who liked other girls. But because of what I was taught, I felt like the only way you could like another girl is if you were a boy.”

As we mentioned earlier, Jaah Kelly also admits that she now identifies as a lesbian, but will not define herself any further. She knows who she is and doesn’t need a label to prove anything.

Drea Speaks Out On Their Daughter’s Journey…
Meanwhile, Jaah’s mother, Drea, is super proud of their daughter, and thanks her father, R. Kelly, for the one thing he gave her that’s helping her with her path in life:

“One thing she gets from her father, true in her DNA, is her ability to create and produce by ear. She’s entirely self-taught,” Drea said about Jaah. “When she wanted to learn piano, she just came to me one day and told me she taught herself how on YouTube. The same goes for making beats. To have my JaahBaby doing what she does in a male-dominated industry makes her all the more extraordinary in my eyes.”

So far, R. Kelly has yet to respond to Jaah or Drea’s statements.

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
