In addition, the church confirmed Long’s death from cancer-related causes.

I am confidant through my belief in God that my husband is now resting in a better place, said Long’s wife, Vanessa. Although his transition leaves a void for those of us who loved him dearly, we can celebrate and be happy for him, knowing he’s at peace.

In September 2016, Long released a statement that said he was recovering from a “health challenge” to debunk the myth that he had been recently hospitalized. However, it was never disclosed what that health challenge was.

The church said he was not in the hospital and released a statement from Long.

I am recovering from a health challenge that I trust God to deliver me from. It is unrelated to the eating for life diet consisting of mostly raw vegetables that I am continuing, as part of a holistic approach to good health. At this time, my family and I are requesting that you respect our privacy. I truly appreciate your prayers and support for me, my loved ones and my beloved New Birth Church Family.

Long delivered his final message to New Birth at a watch service to bring in the new year. Despite the fact that he was not in the best health, his spirit would not die as he continued to preach.

He is survived by his wife, First Lady Elder Vanessa Long, four children: Eric, Edward, Jared and Taylor; and three grandchildren.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
