If you guessed Rick James you were dead on. Now we’re not saying that it’s ever a good thing to not fulfill your military duties after you’ve made a commitment to do so, but we all know Rick was a wild dude, so we at least got to give him his respect for being willing to risk it all – even his freedom – to pursue his true passion. He got himself into that whole mess because after he dropped out of high school he joined the Navy, realized he didn’t like it, so he split…just up and left the country and landed in Toronto, Canada. He formed a group called the Mynah Byrds and then they moved back to the U.S. after being signed by Berry Gordy. While working on their new Motown album, word has it that Rick was ratted out by their former manager, whom they’d just fired, and that’s how he got busted and had to serve one year in a Buffalo, N.Y. prison.

Aren’t you glad that Rick followed his dream? Without Rick in the music game it wouldn’t have been the same. There would be no “Ebony Eyes,” “Super freak,” Fire And Desire”…none of that.

About I Love Old School Music

We salute the incredible people and beautiful memories of that "old school". We’re not saying that every artist and every facet of the soul era was perfect, but the artists’ contributions to soul music and the old school memories of that particular time are PRICELESS.
