Oscars 2022: (L) Will Smith yelling at Chris Rock; (R) Will smacking Chris Rock

Sometimes I Love Old School Music family…this stuff just writes itself. Now, in case you’re like many of us and slept through the otherwise boring Oscars Awards, and are just hoppin’ online, you’ve likely heard by now that Will Smith smacked the $#!* outta Chris Rock on national television. For a hot second, it damn near looked like it was a WWE event. And now, Will Smith’s sister’s got something to say about it (scroll down for her response).

But First, Here’s A Quick Recap

So, last night Chris Rock hosted the Oscars and did what Chris Rock does…be a comedian who scales the controversial line of hilarious and hilariously-cringeworthy jokes. The latter is what he applied to Will’s wife, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith, and her new closely cut hairdo, which is pretty dope by the way.

Long story short…Chris threw shade at Jada, by jokingly telling her he couldn’t wait to see ‘G.I. Jane 2,’ which doesn’t exist. As y’all know, “GI Jane” was a film that featured Demi Moore with a shaved head. The crowd was stunned, and initially Will tried to do what he normally does in public — take the high road and laugh it off — but that all changed in a matter of about 2 seconds. Once Will saw that Jada was not laughing at all, he got hella pissed and could no longer contain himself. Will rushed the stage, and to the surprise of everyone, smacked Chris Rock as hard with an open hand…which in my opinion is worse than just punching him. A man smacking another man in the face is a sign that he’s not necessarily trying to break his jaw, he’s trying to break his spirit.

As the crowd loudly gasped, Will walked back to his seat near Jada and yelled twice, “Keep my wife’s name out your fu**ing mouth!” Chris Rock took the slap like a G…meaning he didn’t fall down, but he did have to catch himself from doing so. Rock was clearly stunned and pissed, stating “Will Smith just slapped the sh*t outta me!”

Jada has spoken out in recent years, about her struggles with alopecia, which is what ultimately prompted her to rock a shaved ‘do. With it being such a personally sensitive matter for Jada, Will clearly felt that Chris crossed the line. FYI: Chris Rock’s beef with the Smiths goes back to 2016, when Jada initiated a call to boycott the Oscars, after Will Smith was not nominated, and called out Chris Rock for hosting it that year.

Anywho, during commercial break, Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry pulled Will to the side of the stage and gave him a pep talk.

Minutes later, Will accepted the award for ‘Best Actor’ (for the “King Richard” biopic) with tears streaming down his face, stating that just like Richard Williams — Serena and Venus Williams’ dad, whom Will portrayed in “King Richard” — he, too, is a “fierce defender of his family.” Will also said that Denzel told him minutes earlier, “At your highest moment, be careful, that’s when the devil comes for you.”

Will Smith’s Sister Speaks Out

Will Smith’s sister, Ellen Smith

Will Smith’s siblings pretty much stay behind the scenes, but they’re extremely close to Will, and are always ridin’ for him. His sister, Ellen, is pretty outspoken (like the time she seemingly shaded Jada online after news surfaced of Jada’s affair with singer, August Alsina), though she tries to practice restraint when speaking publicly about her big bro, Will. However, we knew it was only a matter of time before she at least said something to show her support for Will amid this smackdown fiasco. In a brief online post, Ellen shared a photo of Will holding his new Oscar Award and captioned it with the following message:

“God does not play about HIS children. 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿
Congratulations Bro bro. Your hard work paid off a long time ago. You’ve been a champion, winner and a huge success on several different levels. It’s your turn. It’s your time. You deserve it. #salute #king #kingrichard 🙏🏿🙏🏿🏆🏆🏆” – Ellen Smith

Will’s Mom & Loved Ones Celebrated Him From Home

During his acceptance speech, Will mentioned that his mom opted to stay home with her knitting group and host an Oscar’s watch party instead. Above is a photo of his mom, Caroline Bright; sister, Ellen; and loved ones dressed up as Mrs. Caroline and the group watched  her baby smack Chris Rock and earn his Oscar Award from home. Alls well, that ends well.
