Brunei recently announced that starting on Wednesday, April 3, 2019, it will began implementing it’s new hardcore criminal sentences, based on Islamic law (Sharia Law). According to CBS, the country’s new penalties, ‘include death by stoning for gay sex and amputation for theft.’

In response, George Clooney wrote an opinion piece, on Deadline.com, calling for a boycott of all Brunei-owned hotels, which are all high end hotels. Clooney urged the public to boycott in order block money from flowing “directly into the pockets of men who choose to stone and whip to death their own citizens for being gay or accused of adultery.”

Some of the Brunei-owned hotels are located in the U.S., such as luxurious The Beverly Hills Hotel in Beverly Hills, CA, as well as the lavish Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles. Many celebs, including Clooney, have admittedly stayed at those hotels in the past, but now it looks like that’s about to change.

After Clooney’s boycott call, Degeneres tweeted a list of the upscale Brunei-owned hotels, announcing she will be boycotting all of them:

“Tomorrow, the country of #Brunei will start stoning gay people to death. We need to do something now. Please boycott these hotels owned by the Sultan of Brunei. Raise your voices now. Spread the word. Rise up.”

Elton John tweeted a message, urging his fans to boycott as well:

“We must send a message, however we can, that such treatment is unacceptable. That’s why David (Elton’s partner) and I have long refused to stay at these hotels and will continue to do so. We hope you will join us in solidarity.”

It’s great that they are banning together for the LGBTQ community. However, T.I. sparked major debate after he called out White celebs and Black folks out on this.
