Rev. Bernice King, the daughter of late civil rights leader, Martin Luther King Jr., is livid after peepin’ Donald Trump’s latest claims, in which he oddly involved her dad’s powerful legacy. In fact, Bernice is so offended by Trump’s MLK-comparison, that she has called him out over it, by shutting down his imaginative claims with a ‘receipt.’

What Trump Said That Made MLK’s Daughter Respond

As y’all have heard by now, on August 8, 2024, Trump held a press conference at his Mar-A-Lago resort. He seemingly grew a tad agitated when a reporter asked him about the massive crowd that Democratic Presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris; and her VP nominee pick, Tim Walz, recently drew on the Presidential campaign trail. That’s when Trump oddly compared himself – by way of comparing his crowd size – to a deceased civil rights icon, MLK, claiming he drew a bigger crowd during his January 6, 2021 rally, than Dr. King did for his revolutionary “I Have a Dream” speech in 1963.

“Oh give me a break,” Trump spewed. “I’ve spoken to the biggest crowds. Nobody’s spoken to crowds bigger than me. If you look at Martin Luther King when he did his speech, his great speech, and you look at ours, same real estate, same everything, same number of people, if not we had more. And they said he had a million people, but I had 25,000 people.”

The Math Ain’t Mathin’

Trump’s crowd-size claim is not accurate, as was pointed out by The Associated Press’s fact checkers:

“Approximately 250,000 people attended the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, at which King gave his speech, according to the National Park Service. The Associated Press reported in 2021 that there were at least 10,000 people at Trump’s address.” – AP

Additionally, Trump’s claim of the location of his 2021 rally was also inaccurate. He did not hold his rally in the same location as MLK.  Dr. King delivered his speech from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, which is nearly one mile from where Trump’s rally was held at the Ellipse– the grassy area near the White House.

In a response to Trump’s inaccurate claims, Bernice King re-shared a clip on X (formerly Twitter) of his MLK-comparison statements, along with photos of MLK, and the crowd that showed up for her father’s 1963 “I Have A Dream Speech” –which was visibly far more massive than Trump’s 2021 rally. She captioned her post with this:

“Absolutely not true. I really wish that people would stop using my father to support fallacy.”

Props to Bernice King for speaking up for her iconic father who’s no longer here to speak for himself…but also, who’s positive, unified legacy continues to stand the test of time.

As the world continues to mourn the loss of Dexter Scott King, the youngest son of the legendary civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, his family and loved ones gathered to pay beautiful homage to him.

As we previously reported, on Monday, January 22, 2024 Dexter tragically succumbed to prostate cancer at the age of 62. In an emotional press conference held at the King Nonviolent Center for Social Change in Atlanta on Tuesday, Reverend Dr. Bernice King, Dexter’s sister, shared the heartbreaking details of his battle with the disease and his unwavering dedication to their father’s legacy.

With tearful eyes, Reverend Bernice King struggled to find words to honor her beloved brother. She described how Dexter fought his cancer for three and a half years, displaying immense strength until the very end. “He kept the faith. His might was strong until the end,” she said, her voice filled with pride and sorrow.

Dexter’s passing marks yet another tragic loss for the King family, coming less than a year after the passing of their oldest sister, Christine King Farris, at the age of 95. Dexter’s mother, Coretta Scott King, a prominent civil rights activist in her own right, also passed away in 2006.

As Chairman of The King Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Dexter dedicated his life to protecting and advancing his parents’ profound influence on the world. Bernice King described her brother as an innovative leader, fiercely dedicated and at the forefront of their family’s mission.

The press conference revealed that Dexter was cremated on the same day as his passing, in accordance with his wishes. A memorial service to honor his life is being planned and will be announced at a later date. Bernice King cherished the time she spent with her brother before his death, remembering his words of encouragement, “I’m proud of you. Keep this legacy going. You got this.”

Dexter’s wife, Leah Weber King (pictured below), expressed immense admiration for her late husband, stating, “He gave it everything and battled this terrible disease until the end. As with all the challenges in his life, he faced this hurdle with bravery and might.”

A towering figure with a strong resemblance to his iconic father, Dexter had captured the nation’s attention in the past. In 1997, he met James Earl Ray, the man who had pleaded guilty to assassinating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dexter believed in Ray’s innocence and hoped that a trial would expose a broader conspiracy. Unfortunately, Ray passed away before the trial could take place.

Beyond his role in upholding his father’s legacy, Dexter had a deep love for the creative arts. He even portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the 2002 television movie “The Rosa Parks Story.” Balancing his artistic pursuits and his commitment to the King family legacy, Dexter lived his life with immense dedication.

The loss of Dexter Scott King leaves a void in the hearts of many around the world. His fight against cancer and his unwavering dedication to his father’s legacy will forever be remembered. As we mourn his passing, let us also celebrate his incredible spirit and the impact he made to carry forward the torch of justice and equality that his father ignited. Rest on, king.

With allegations of assault and harassment looming, Jonathan defends his use of Coretta’s name, expressing his utmost respect for the iconic figure and her enduring legacy.

Jonathan’s Comments That Sparked Initial Backlash

Addressing the backlash, Jonathan emphasizes his intention to convey respect for Coretta Scott King, acknowledging her monumental achievements and the profound connection she shared with her husband. He explains that his admiration extends to both Coretta’s personal legacy and her crucial role in American and world history.

Jonathan further highlights the powerful influence Coretta Scott King has had on him and his girlfriend, actress Meagan Good. Following the interview, Bernice King took to X (formerly Twitter) to swiftly express her discontent, pointing out that her iconic mother should not be treated as a prop:

While Jonathan does not mention the interaction directly in his latest statement, he assured that his intentions regarding his comments about Coretta Scott-King were pure and rooted in respect:

During the trial, audio clips revealed that Jonathan had encouraged his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, to emulate both Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama. It is clear that Jonathan holds these influential women in high regard. But the jury found him guilty of assault and harassment against Jabbari, despite viewing surveillance footage of Jonathan running away from Grace during their alleged altercation.

Only Time Will Tell

In spite of the criticism and potential implications, as y’all can see…Jonathan remains unapologetic for utilizing Coretta’s name. He firmly asserts that his immense respect for her remains intact. Even though MLK Jr. lost his life when his four children were just young kids in 1968, they clearly learned and/or inherited some of his personality traits. In particular, his son, Dexter King (56), has recently displayed his ability to forgive, much like his Pops. Forgive what, you ask? Forgive Newsweek’s highly insensitive tweet of his father in an open casket, presumably in efforts to get link clicks to their article about Dr. King, Jr.

Fast forward to a few days later and Bernice’s brother, Dexter, has a slightly different take on the senseless tweet by Newsweek- he believes it was an “honest mistake” on Newsweek’s part. Although I’m not quite sure how one ‘mistakenly’ posts an open casket photo and captions it “Have you seen our old friend Martin?,” Dexter has a different outlook. Like I said, it’s great to see that Dexter inherited his Pops’ ability to forgive. Couldn’t be me though…nah! You disrespect my parent like that, I’m holding that grudge for life!

Bernice King HasChange Of Heart After Newsweek’s Apology

Anywho, Dexter wasn’t the only King offspring to forgive though. After Newsweek issued an apology for their ridiculous tweet, surprisingly Bernice King found it in her heart to forgive them as well.

Newsweek’s apology via Twitter:

“Earlier this afternoon we published an opinion piece with an insensitive image of Martin Luther King Jr. We sincerely apologize to the King family for this egregious error.”

Bernice King’s statement of forgiveness about Newsweek:

“Today I saw where Newsweek published this insensitive image of my father. […] We must never forget that Dr. King was a husband and was a father so we deal all the time just with continuing to manage our father and the great work that he’s done…so it was difficult. […] I want to thank Newsweek for immediately responding and removing the image and for giving an apology. Apology accepted.”

And there it is people, alls well that ends well. Respect to Dexter and Bernice King for finding it in their hearts to forgive…but hopefully, never forget.

Pepsi’s Vague Attempt To Send United Message Backfired

1. Pepsi used a blend of people (mostly Caucasian with a few other nationalities sprinkled in between) in a failed attempt to give their ‘protest’ commercial a multi-cultural ‘we are the world’ type vibe. That’s great right? WRONG in this case, because the message was unclear. All the viewers could conclude is that the paid extras and Kendall were marching in protest of…something. And it’s that confusion that brings us to wack reason #2…

Liberals & Conservatives HATED It

2. Although groups from all walks of life were confused, in particular two of them were really beefin’ with Pepsi on the internet- Liberals vs. Conservatives- so Pepsi didn’t stand a chance either way.

Those against the Black Lives Matter movement (mostly conservatives) are pissed because the commercial seemed to support the BLM movement. That in and of itself, is a whole ‘nother topic because it’s pretty baffling that anyone would think it’s wrong to stand in solidarity against the hundreds of thousands of unjust killings of Black people at the hands of police. Moving on…because again, that’s a different topic for another day…

Those in support of the Black Lives Matter movement (mostly liberals and anyone else who thinks cops killing Black people at random is wrong) were pissed because the commercial seemed to downplay the severity of the issues at hand, by doing two things: (a) not casting a more diverse group of people; and (b) by suggesting that because Kendall Jenner handed the police officer a Pepsi and he drank it, that is all it takes to end police brutality and get equal rights.

The Kardashian Backlash

Many commenters also didn’t like Kendall Jenner doing such an ‘insensitive’ commercial just to get a check and they ultimately took aim at the Kardashian crew for being “gold digging attention seekers.”

So yeah…this whole Pepsi sha-bang didn’t go over well.

Pepsi Scared To Pick A Side?

Overall, it seems like the creative heads at Pepsi were obviously scared to choose a movement– whether it be women’s rights, Black Lives Matter, pro-Trump, anti-Trump, LGBT rights, Blue Lives Matter…or whatever. Pepsi’s mistake was trying to create a ‘kumbayah’ moment in a society that unfortunately leans toward the opposite direction. So now Pepsi just looks weak and insensitive as a result of their indecisively nonspecific protest commercial.
