There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the ’70s classic, The Mack. There was murder, there was beef with the Black Panthers and there was mayhem. The film was based on the real life pimp and drug dealer from Oakland, Ca., Frank Ward.

Max Julien’s role as “Goldie” was the film’s portrayal of Frank, who was known as one of the biggest African American dope dealers and pimps of that era. The movie was shot in his “territory” and the only problem was that the Black Panthers also controlled a large amount of Oakland , so things got ugly real quick. Here are the details of what happened:

Via Soul Train: “The fact that the film got made is a miracle,” said the film’s director Michael Campus in the documentary Mackin’ Ain’t Easy, about the making of The Mack.

The movie was set in Oakland, which in the early seventies was a dangerous place. Still, Campus wanted it to be the setting of the film.

Ted Ward, actor Max Julien, actor Dick Anthony Williams, and the real life “Mack,” Frank Ward pictured far right (screeen-grab)

According to Soul Train, the underworld scene of the Oakland area was controlled by four brothers, with the last name Ward. Max Julian described Frank Ward as “a serious criminal,” in the documentary. It was also revealed that the film crew and Campus had to seek special permission from Ward, to be able to film in the neighborhood.

“Were the Ward brothers going to back us?” Campus wondered. “Frank asked, ‘What’s in it for [me]?’ I immediately told him he had to be in the film. Then he said, ‘Okay man, let’s understand one thing. I take you in my world, you take me in your world. I show you what I do, you show me what you do.’ Frank opened up all the doors. I could go anywhere in Oakland with Frank’s permission.”

After Ward gave them the okay on The Mack, the crew had access to locations that were like a golden treasure for that type of film- underground barbershops, fancy nightclubs, pool halls, etc. The pimps, women, homeless people, and junkies shown in the film were all authentic and supplied by Ward, under his close supervision. -via Soul Train

Black Panther founders, (L) Bobby Seale and (R) Huey P.
There were a ton of problems that transpired on set, with the Black Panther Party members:

The producer, Harvey Bernard, said that Bobby Seale, co-founder of the Black Panthers, barged into his hotel room one night and informed him that he and his crew were shooting in “Black Panther territory.” But Bernard was not worried since he had the Ward Brothers to protect him. Black Panthers founder Huey P. Newton wanted $5,000 in exchange for making the film in their territory. “But the check bounced,” Bernard said. The next day when the crew was shooting, bottles and glass started raining down from rooftops and the crew ducked for cover and scattered.

“Frank was so enraged…he felt this was his picture and we were under his protection, not the Panthers. He stayed around us to make sure things were right. We never knew what was going to happen from day to day and if we were going to complete this picture,” said Campus. -via Soul Train

Then things took a turn for the worse after Max Julien attempted to calm the tension down. Max was really cool with Huey P. Newton, so he met up with him to act as a middle man and ease situation. But then this happened:

Frank Ward was shot in the back of the head and killed as he sat in his Rolls Royce with his ‘bottom woman,’ whom was also killed. Many blamed the Panthers for the hit on Frank Ward and without Ward’s protection, the filmmakers and cast had to retreat to safer grounds in L.A. to finish filming. The Mack was dedicated to Frank Ward, but Black Panther leader, Huey P. Newton, still insisted that the premiere benefit the Panthers’ milk fund in Oakland city. -via Soul Train

After Frank Ward’s funeral was over, his brother and partner in crime, Ted Ward, allegedly fled to New Orleans, La., never to be heard from again.

It was never confirmed who actually killed Frank Ward and the young lady. Sadly, Frank was actually starting to go into legitimate business, but unfortunately when you live that lifestyle, there’s no time limit in the code of the streets.

There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the 70’s classic, The Mack.

Newton

The legendary Jane Fonda (82) has always been a woman with two passions- she loves acting, but as a human rights activist, she despises White privilege and injustice within America and beyond. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s, was when her activism was fully put to the test, as the FBI surveilled her for her support of the Black Panther Party. Fonda supported the civil rights organization in several ways- through financial donations, posting bail money for their political prisoners, and more. In 1970, her support of the News Orleans chapter of the Black Panther Party (BPP) showed just how much of a gangsta she really was and how far she was willing to go, in order to help the BPP fight for the rights of African Americans.

Jane Fonda’s mug shot

In October 1970, the New Orleans chapter of the Black Panther moved their headquarters into the N.O.’s Desire Housing Project, following the unjust killing of a teen male by officers in the area. Although the N.O.P.D. along wth the national government and FBI, wanted the Black Panthers eliminated, the residents of the Desire and the surrounding community welcomed their presence with opened arms. The BPP was there to aid the community with food programs, protection from racist acts by law enforcement, racist civilians, and more.

As a result of the love the Panthers showed the community, they, in turn, protected the BPP members when it came time for a stand-off between the N.O.P.D. and several BPP members, who were holed up inside of the Desire apartments.

Black Panther Party

The November 19, 1970 Desire project stand-off was the result of the government’s attempt to evict the Panthers from the property. Thousands of residents (including children) from the community, stood in front of the Desire buildings to prevent the officers from shooting and killing the Panthers at will. During the ordeal, the BPP members were inside the Desire project and well prepared for war if necessary- equipped with artillery, grenades, etc. The N.O. mayor at that time, Moon Landrieu, tried to talk them into leaving, but they refused unless they offered to help the residents in that community in several ways. Therefore, Landrieu sent bus loads of officers and a helicopter into the community.

The officers finally retreated, after realizing the Panthers would not vacate the premises, nor would the residents back down.

What Fonda Did To Assist Panthers After Police Standoff

Embed from Getty Images

Following that Nov. 19 incident, some of the members contacted their longtime supporter, Jane Fonda, to inform her of what went down. By November 24, she was in New Orleans, leading a protest that challenged the Housing Authority of New Orleans for previously denying Black Panther member, Harold Holmes, a right to rent an apartment in the Desire Project without any just cause to do so. Thus, leading to the BPP’s taking matters into their own hands and setting up shop at the Desire project anyway.

Following the stand-off, Jane Fonda also praised the N.O. Black Panthers, in the press, for not backing down from the N.O.P.D.’s eviction attempt, stating:

“How can we smug White people say what Black people should do? We have done nothing for centuries to stop the violence perpetuated against them.”

The next day, on November 25, 1970, some of the Black Panther members, were being surveilled by N.O.P.D. officers. When they learned of the surveillance, they asked Jane to assist them with getting out of the state unnoticed, so they could attend a very important Black Panther organized national convention against injustice. Jane Fonda then rented 4 cars- under her name, with her credit card- for them to leave the state incognito. Unfortunately, the N.O.P.D. officers were also surveilling Fonda and that lead them to the Panthers she’d helped. The officers stopped the Panthers in the four rented vehicles, as they were leaving the Desire project and arrested them for no reason, other than being Black Panthers.

Officer Reveals Run In With Fonda

At the time of her November 1970 visit to New Orleans, Jane Fonda eventually realized that her every move was being trailed by an N.O.P.D. officer. That officer also happened to be Black, but was working against the Black Panthers at that time and he later revealed exactly what happened when Jane came face to face with him. In the book, “Showdown in Desire: The Black Panthers Take a Stand in New Orleans,” Officer Larry Williams recalled how Fonda called him all sorts of names for ‘selling out’ his own people. He also admitted that as an officer back then, they knew they abused their authority against the Panthers. Check out the book’s excerpts below:

There was a LOT of danger and gangster-style drama surrounding the filming of the 70’s classic, The Mack.

Ted Ward, actor Max Julien, actor Dick Anthony Williams, and the real life “Mack,” Frank Ward pictured far right (screen grab)

Black Panthers Bobby Seale and Huey P. Newton (via Pinterest)

The legendary Jane Fonda (80) has always been a woman with two passions- she loves acting, but as a human rights activist, she despises White privilege and injustice within America and beyond.

The Dangerous Police Standoff That Led To Fonda’s Help
