Diddy and his team are likely very worried about the multiple allegations, court cases, and the disturbing 2016 video of Diddy beating Cassie…but there is one person who is admittedly ecstatic to see the mound of controversy surrounding Diddy– Chaka Khan’s daughter, Indira Khan (and possibly Chaka, too). Why? Well, because according to Indira, Diddy did her moms dirty in the past. And now, Chaka, herself, has spoken out on this situation.

Chaka’s Daughter’s Claims About Diddy

Like many, Indira ain’t buying the apology Diddy offered up for savagely beating his then-girlfriend, Cassie (Ventura) Fine. Diddy’s apology came eight years after the 2016 hotel incident took place…and only after video proof surfaced of the beatdown. However, those aren’t the only reasons Indira is goin’ off on Diddy. She’s also happy he’s going through all of this because of the way he once allegedly braced up to and yelled at her moms –while simultaneously having her brother beaten– during an heated incident, according to Indira.

In a comment posted under Diddy’s now-infamous apology video on Instagram, Indira Khan (@theikhanofficial on IG) wrote:

“I’m glad this is happening to you, you got in my mothers face and publicly disrespected her yelling and screaming like a lunatic when my little brother tried to get you out of my mothers face your security jumped my 19 year old brother […] these may be your dark days but I’m singing and dancing watching your demise…”

Indira then tagged her mother, Chaka, in the comment and included several laughing emojis and dancing emojis:

“@ChakaKhan isn’t it great mom[?]”

So, as you all can see, Indira Khan is no fan of Diddy.

Chaka’s Response

A day after Indira went off about Diddy’s alleged disrespect toward her mother, Chaka gave a more politically correct response about this situation:

Via TMZ: “In these troubling times, I’m reminded that the energies of violence and abuse can take many forms, affecting individuals and communities worldwide. As someone who has faced personal lessons, I believe in the power of meditation, prayer and inner peace to bring light and hope to our lives and the world around us.”

“We can address most issues, prevent negativity, and cultivate compassion by seeking Self. Let us take responsibility for our actions, strive to be better, and support those who are hurting.”

She concluded, “May we find strength in grace and wisdom as human beings, walking towards a more loving and just world.”

Back in the day, Chaka Khan had one shocking incident that was definitely kept under wraps, but she dodged this bullet by the skin of her teeth! She has admitted to being involved in a very hostile situation with her then husband, Richard Holland. It all went down while Chaka was 8 months pregnant with their son, Damien, and she ended up doing the unthinkable.

What Happened

Typically when we think of domestic disputes, we usually think of the man being the aggressor, Chaka said this particular incident was provoked by her. In her 2003 memoir, “Through The Fire,” Chaka had previously detailed the dangerous incident, but didn’t disclose who the man was. It wasn’t until 2012 that she revealed it was her ex-husband, Richard, whom she’d once fired multiple shots at during a very hostile argument.

She stated that one night in 1976, she called Holland to let him know she was on her way home had forgotten her house keys, therefore, requesting him to leave the keys in their secret hiding spot. She says that when she finally returned home, the keys were not there, so she had to break a window to get in. This pissed her off and once Richard arrived later that evening, Chaka explained what happened:

Via Wenn: [Chaka] tells National Enquirer, “I went for the shotgun, loaded it, pulled the trigger. I missed him because as soon as he saw the gun, he high-tailed it into the office, slammed the door, and turned out the lights.” Khan…called police for help, but lied to authorities and blamed the shooting incident on an intruder. She continues, “When I came to my senses, as blood trickled from the wound above my eye, I wanted to damn myself to hell that Milini (her then-four-year-old daughter) had witnessed something like this. Not that it was the first fight she ever saw, but it was definitely the worst. I called the cops and made like there was an intruder in the house.”

Apparently when the cops showed up to Chaka’s home, they didn’t buy her story, because they hauled her husband off to jail instead. Following the fiasco, Chaka had a chance to settle down and soon realized what the depth of her actions:

“So there I was, an almost felon, the mother of a five-year old, with another baby on the way, a screwed up marriage and bills on top of bills. And there were thousands of women out there envying Chaka Khan, thinking if only they were me.”

Needless to say, Chaka’s trigger happy moment ended her marriage to Richard Holland, the man she wrote her hit song, “Sweet Thing,” for.

Lawd ha’mercy, Chaka almost went to the slammer for this one! Had Chaka landed one of those bullets into her then-husband (thankfully she didn’t), soul music as we know it, would have been totally different, because Chaka would not have been able to build the long lasting legacy she’s built now. Split-second decisions are vital- they can be our best friends, or our own worst enemies if we’re not thinking logically. We’re glad that Chaka had a bad aim that day and hopefully the effects of her daughter, Indira, experiencing such a volatile event, didn’t mentally or psychologically scar her for life.

The exploitation took place when Stevie was working with Rufus ft. Chaka Khan, on their 1974 album, “Rags To Rufus.” Both Chaka and Stevie wrote some of the songs on the album and apparently Chaka gave up a LOT of bread that she could have earned for being a co-writer on their biggest hit song from that album, “Tell Me Something Good.” But that is where she says she got exploited by Stevie. Here is what Chaka detailed about that in her book:

“Next thing I know, I was working with Stevie Wonder on the lyrics for “Tell Me Something Good.” And because I was jazzed about having Wonder on our album, I forfeited a co-write credit. A lot of people can’t believe that. They ask me if I’m bitter. Did I feel exploited? If I had been able to predict that song would be a smash, would I have done things differently? No, I’m not bitter. In a way, I was exploited but that happens to everybody no matter what field he or she is in.”

Chaka has a great outlook about the millions of dollars she gave up, many people would have still been holding a grudge against Stevie 40-plus years later. But the truth of the matter is business is business, so Stevie wasn’t really at fault, because it was up to Chaka to have the knowledge, or at least a knowledgeable team around her to advise her to do otherwise.

“The Rags To Rufus” album earned Rufus ft. Chaka Khan their very first Grammy Award and it sold over a million copies at the time of it’s release. Who knows how much it’s earned by now- with all of the movies, commercials, and additional albums it’s sold.

We can’t really blame Chaka for not being bitter, because if it weren’t for the success of “Tell Me Something Good,” which Stevie added his flavor to, then Rufus may not have blown up at the time that they did and Chaka might not have become the Chaka we know her to be today. So Chaka’s amateur decision was actually like a blessing in disguise.

We love us some Chaka Khan, here at ILoveOldSchoolMusic, and just as much as we love her beautiful voice, we also love her inner strength. She’s been a survivor in the midst of several adversities within her life. As most of us know, she and her sister/singer, Taka Boom, completed a rehab stint a few years ago, during which time Chaka revealed that her good friend, Prince’s, tragic death scared the living daylights out of her. Chaka was reportedly addicted to the same prescription pain med, fentanyl, that Prince accidentally overdosed on in April 2016.

And just like the rest of us, no one is perfect…that fact goes for Chaka’s 44-year-old son, Damien Holland, as well, who has also had his fair share of struggles throughout the years. Chaka shared rare photos of Damien and his daughter, but before we get into their pics, I wanna point out that there may be a reason why most of Chaka’s fans know all about her beautiful, talented singer daughter, Millini Khan (50), but don’t know much at all about her son. It could be because for the past decade or so, Damien, too, has had a reported drug addiction and has stayed out of the public’s eye. However, there were times when Damien could not dodge the public scrutiny though…

Chaka’s Son’s Legal Problems

Murder Trial
In 2006 Damien stood trial for the murder of his former friend, 17 year old Christopher Bailey, after shooting him inside of Chaka Khan’s L.A. home. Damien was adamant in his claim that the shooting was an accident and Chaka testified on his behalf. He was ultimately found not guilty.

Custody Of Son’s Daughter Granted To Chaka

By December 2011, Chaka was granted permanent custody of Damien’s then-10 year old daughter, Daija (who is approximately 22 now), and Chaka’s sister Tammy McCrary, was granted full co-custody. This happened after Chaka told an L.A. Superior Court County judge that Daija’s mother was reportedly unfit to be a mother at that time, due to her alleged heavy drug addiction. It later came out that Chaka’s son, Damien- who lived in his mom’s home with his daughter’s mother- was also reportedly heavily addicted to drugs then as well. In the September 2011 initial custody filing, Chaka stated that she had already “assumed on a day-to-day basis the role of the child’s parent fulfilling both the child’s physical and psychological needs for care and affection.”

2015 Arrest w/Reality Show Friend
In December 2015, Damien Holland made headlines again when he and his oil heir millionaire friend/Celebrity Rehab reality show star friend, Jason ‘Gummy Bear’ Davis, were reportedly arrested in Beverly Hills, CA for driving a stolen Audi Q5 and identity theft. But ever since then, Damien has obviously been living life on the straight and narrow…

PHOTOS CHAKA SHARED ABOUT HER SON & THE GRANDDAUGHTER SHE’S RAISING

After learning of the life struggles Damien Holland has experienced, it’s understandable why- when we fast forward to today- Chaka is photo’d (above) with her grandbaby, Daija, smiling from ear to ear and happy as can be about her son. In March (2017) Chaka posted a Happy Birthday wish to both Damien and his daughter, Daija…all three of them celebrate their b-days in the same month. Needles to say, the sight of Damien shocked the hell out of her fans.

Some fans never even knew Chaka had a son, while others were pleasantly surprised that his typically-hidden presence was revealed.

Chaka Khan has a lot on her plate right now, but she is “every woman,” who is clearly earning that title more and more everyday. She’s a 69-year-old mother of her teenage granddaughter, a hands-on grandmother to her other younger grandkids, a very actively performing singing legend, and a continued work in progress from her own past addiction. Through it all, we still love Chaka and wish her continued success with balancing her day-to-day ‘hats.’

In 2006 though, Chaka ended up having to pay for her son, Damien Holland’s, mistake and so did her mother, Sandra…when a judge ordered all three of them to cough up some major money in a wrongful death lawsuit. It all started after Damien (then 25) killed his friend, Christopher Bailey (17), in 2004. Chaka has discussed this tragedy several times in interviews, but see how she and her Mom got tied up into the situation below…

WHAT HAPPENED THE DAY OF THE SHOOTING

During Damien Holland’s 2006 murder trial, he confessed to shooting his friend, Christopher Bailey, in the face with an M-16 assault rifle, as they argued about Christopher allegedly having an affair with Damien’s girlfriend. But Damien was adamant that he shot him by accident and that his intention was never to shoot his friend. Damien was acquitted of all charges after the jury heard the testimonies from him; his mom, Chaka; and others’ during the trial. However, there is more to this story…

PARENTS SUED CHAKA & FAM’ BECAUSE THEY REPORTEDLY DIDN’T BELIEVE THEIR STORY

According to Chaka’s son, Damien, he shot his friend, Christopher, inside of Chaka’s Los Angeles, CA home in Sept. 2004, which is where Damien was also living at the time. L.A. newspaper, Daily Breeze, reported that Christopher Bailey’s parents believed Chaka and others excluded pertinent info from their testimonies that they think could have gotten Damien convicted. So Christopher’s parents ultimately filed and won a $1.3 MILLION lawsuit against Chaka; her mom; and son, Damien, for negligence and wrongful death of their son (although it’s still not crystal clear how or why Chaka’s mom was incorporated into this). Here’s what was reported:

Via DailyBreeze: Since the trial, [Glen] Newton [Christopher’s dad] has grown to believe that many of the witnesses – including Khan – lied about the circumstances surrounding Bailey’s death, possibly because they feared repercussions from crossing Holland and Khan.

[Christopher] Bailey’s parents sued Khan, Holland, Khan’s mother and Khan’s company in September 2006, alleging wrongful death and negligence.

Khan’s mother, Sandra Coleman, settled with Bailey’s family for $500,000, court records show, although the family contends that was only half of what they agreed to. Superior Court Judge Bob Hight approved a default judgment against them in November for more than $1.3 million, plus interest, according to court records.

We’re not sure if Chaka and Damien paid their portion of the judgement, but there are no further claims from Christopher’s family stating that they didn’t pay. But there’s more…

CHAKA’S SON’S ‘CONFLICTING STORY’ BROUGHT OUT AT TRIAL

Via Today – During questioning by his attorney, [Damien] Holland admitted he made up a story about the gun going off during a struggle with Bailey. Holland also said he persuaded friends to lie to the police and had a friend punch him in the face to make it appear he had fought with Bailey. “I didn’t see any way out of the situation,” Holland said. “I felt terrible,” said Damien.

This entire situation is extremely sad, and Chaka once described it as a “living nightmare.” Hopefully, Christopher Bailey’s family has been able to find some peace after his death.

If you haven’t heard by now…Chaka Khan is never one to censor her words, nor her feelings. If she does not like you, or something about you, rest assured you will either get a funny look from her, or a direct calling out from this living icon. Kanye West is no exception to this fact.

Chaka recently voiced her opinion, yet again, about Kanye’s homage to her, by sampling her song, “Through The Fire,” for his debut single, “Through The Wire.” It turns out, she hated it! However, a move she made with Kanye afterwards has some folks confused.

A few years ago, Chaka told Britain’s Daily Mail newspaper this regarding Kanye’s sampling of her song:

“I didn’t like at all what he did with my song because he made me sound like a chipmunk… I didn’t know that he was going to take my vocal and speed it up. I didn’t give him permission to do that and yet the song kickstarted his entire career.”

Fast forward to 2022 — during a recent interview on Fox 5 (video below) — Chaka is still goin’ off about what she hates about Kanye’s sampling of her song. She also said she has zero desire to chop it up with ‘Ye going forward.

Here’s What’s Confusing About Chaka’s Statements

Don’t get me wrong, ’round here at I Love Old School Music…we love us some Chaka…but we’ve also gotta call a spade a spade when we see it.

What’s confusing about Chaka’s continued disdain for the way Kanye sampled her vocals is that she showed up to perform that very song — “Through The Wire” with Kanye in 2004 AFTER he’d already released the song for his “College Dropout” album that same year. ‘Ye’s album released in February 2004…and 6 months later in August 2004, there was Chaka on stage, singing her heart out with him at the 2004 VMA Awards.

So, the question is: What transpired afterwards? Because from the looks of their collaborative performance (below), everything was al good between them.

The Reality Is…

At any rate, let’s be real….we all know that Kanye isn’t always the most likable personality and he sometimes comes across like a jerk to many, BUT that doesn’t negate the fact that the dude is a solid producer/artist.

As phenomenal as Chaka Khan is, the harsh reality is that Kanye will likely reach a broader audience than Chaka by the end of his career…go figure! On the flip side, does Chaka deserves the same amount — if not more — accolades than Kanye? ABSOLUTELY. But unfortunately, the opportunities for today’s artists are different than what they were during Chaka’s era.

So, although Chaka’s point of view about her dislike for Kanye’s song is understandable, we can’t ignore the fact that when Kanye released his 2004 “Through The Wire” single, it reintroduced Chaka to a much broader audience of generation X’ers and Millennials at that time, who otherwise would not have paid as much attention to — or may have missed altogether — her beautiful legacy.

Now, when it comes to Kanye’s questionable political views and whatnot…nah, that’s where I’d suggest the brotha just stick to what he does best – be a creative force for the culture.

CHAKA’S SON’S ‘CONFLICTING STORY’ BROUGHT OUT AT TRIAL

Via Today – During questioning by his attorney, [Damien] Holland admitted he made up a story about the gun going off during a struggle with Bailey. Holland also said he persuaded friends to lie to the police and had a friend punch him in the face to make it appear he had fought with Bailey. “I didn’t see any way out of the situation,” Holland said. “I felt terrible,” said Damien.

This entire situation is extremely sad, and Chaka once described it as a “living nightmare.” Hopefully, Christopher Bailey’s family has been able to find some peace after his death.
