To say Cissy Houston has been through a LOT in the past few years, is an understatement. If she were to ever pen an autobiography about herself, it would probably read like both a horror film and triumphant greatness all wrapped into one. She watched her daughter soar to great heights in the music game. She also saw her baby plummet to great lows with drug addiction. Then she saw her rise above her struggles yet again, only to be faced with more heartbreak and tragedy soon afterwards.

In a span of just 3 & 1/2 years, Cissy lost her baby, Whitney Houston, in February 2012; and her grandbaby, Bobbi Kristina Brown, in July 2015. Then, Mama Houston was hit with another devastating blow, when her son, Michael Houston, confessed to her on national TV, that is was he who introduced Whitney to drugs- not Bobby Brown, as Cissy long believed. Three years later, in 2018, she learned of the molestation that reportedly happened to both Whitney and her son, Gary Houston, at the hands of their now deceased cousin, Dee Dee Warwick (Dionne Warwick’s sister and Cissy’s former group member). Then came her still persistent battle with denial, anger, anguish, and pain, regarding the sexual abuse revelations.

Through it all, Cissy Houston, is still managing to pull inner strength to get her through the rough times. And although it can be validly argued that she made several mistakes as a parent, it still doesn’t deny the fact that she loves her family and they love her back as well. That love was evident in her recent birthday party Cissy’s fam’ and friends through for her.

On September 30, 2018, a close friend of Cissy’s and executive manager of Whitney’s estate, Ulysses Carter, shared several moments from her 85th b-day party. One of them was Cissy’s emotional speech, as daughter-in-law, Pat Houston, stood nearby:

The other b-day moment displays how the longtime background singer, Cissy Houston, got her dance on at the private shindig. Ms. Cissy was decked out in an all-white ensemble, lookin’ like the fly deaconess at the church banquet, who still hasn’t forgotten how she used to cut a rug in her secular hey day (I joke, I joke…I kid, I kid). Anywho, as her loved ones cheered the birthday girl on, Cissy did a classic strut with her cane in hand, as if it were not a cane at all, but rather a ‘dance assistant,’ if you will. Our thoughts and prayers are with Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy Houston, at this time. Clearly, the past 6 years have been horrific for the 84 year old Houston family matriarch. Ever since losing Whitney in 2012, things have only gotten worse. After then losing her grandbaby, Bobbi Kristina, and now dealing with her son, Gary’s, revelation that he and Whitney were sexually abused by her niece, Dee Dee Warwick- it’s a lot and has reportedly taken a severe toll on her health.

What Cissy Is Reportedly Battling

It’s now been reported by Radar Online, that Cissy is currently battling dementia, and a family source says the latest stress factors within their family caused the symptoms to seemingly rapidly progress:

Via Radar Online: [Cissy Houston] has been battling her own health issues, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively. “She’s in the early stages of dementia,” a source told Radar of the Grammy-winning Gospel singer. “She repeats herself a lot and doesn’t remember what she says. She just says she’s getting old.”

Recent claims made by Whitney’s brother, Gary, that he and his songstress sister were molested as children by their cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, have made her health woes more of a concern for family. “The family is already fractured enough,” said the source, “but she has had enough clarity to know what’s going on with these claims and is very upset.”

This comes on the heels of the family endorsed documentary, “Whitney,” which Cissy and several other family members participated in. This also comes soon after Cissy and her niece/singer, Dionne Warwick (77), released a pissed off statement to blast their family. They are outraged with certain family members, for revealing details of the reported molestation Gary and Whitney Houston apparently endured from Dionne’s late sister, Dee Dee in the film. In their lengthy statement to People Magazine, here’s part of what Cissy and Dionne stated:

“My niece Dionne Warwick and I make this statement to raise our voices above the din surrounding the release of the film, Whitney. Although the film is marketed as a Houston Family approved/endorsed project, neither my son, Michael, Dionne nor I knew of the allegations of abuse, the direction the film would take, until two days before the screening at Cannes. […]

We cannot…overstate the shock and horror we feel and the difficulty we have believing that my niece Dee Dee Warwick (Dionne’s sister) molested two of my three children.

I’ve been told—as justification for the invasive theme of this film—that Whitney was a public person and therefore the public has a right to know any and everything about her. I say, NO, she was a famous person … a singer, an actress, a quiet but generous philanthropist. She wasn’t running for office, asking for money or trying to win the right to run anyone’s life. Her job does not entitle the “public” to know every intimate detail of her life beyond what she herself revealed during her lifetime. Although she spoke about her struggle with drugs, the interventions, her daughter Krissi and issues in her marriage, she never PUBLICLY spoke about her father’s stealing from her or revealed any claim that she had been molested. IF she was molested I do not believe she would have wanted it to be revealed for the first time to thousands, maybe millions of people in a film.

Many of the late singer’s close friends and family members spoke about her life during the “Whitney” documentary film, but Gary’s claims are what people are really talkin’ about. For those who haven’t seen the film, he says he and his sister were molested by their now deceased cousin, and Dionne Warwick’s sister, Dee Dee Warwick. Needless to say, the claims have led to a media firestorm. Now, reports are revealing Cissy Houston’s reaction to the drama. If the latest reports are true, the Houston family may never be the same.

Disowned?

According to EURWeb, insiders claim Cissy Houston has disowned her son over the allegations he’s reportedly made public. The insider has detailed a call Cissy allegedly made to her son, telling him she’d be “cutting him out of her well.”

If the drastic decision is true, that basically means she no longer wants anything to do with her son: “Cissy called him and told him ‘I’m cutting you out of my will,’ and hung up the phone,” said the source.

Does The Family Believe Gary?:

As expected, the claims have led to tons of questions from fans, friends, and even members of the Houston family. So, does the family believe Gary’s claims? According to the insider, Gary is standing alone these days, because reportedly, no one believes his statements. Since he opened up about the situation during the film, many of their family members are accusing him of making the statements for the sake of publicly to draw attention to the film. “Gary never brought up these accusations before and the family doesn’t believe him,” said the source. “They think it was used to just drum up publicity for the film.”

However, Whitney’s  friend and longtime assistant, Mary, also revealed that Whitney confided in her about the molestation that she reportedly endured at the hands of Dee Dee Warwick. Not sure what the truth is, but there is no doubt that the Houston siblings had deep rooted issues that ultimately led them to drug addiction.

What Would Whitney Have Wanted?

Since the release of Whitney’s latest documentary, fans have all asked the same question: Is all of this what Whitney would have wanted? Amid the allegations, Cissy Houston and Dionne Warwick have reacted to the situation and both have expressed “shock.” Although Gary and Whitney are Cissy’s children, her sentiments are quite similar to Dionne’s. Both women find the allegations hard to believe. In a recent statement, Cissy angrily spoke about her daughter and the private issues in her life that she chose to make public. Cissy admitted that although her daughter did open up about her personal life from time to time, she thinks that this type of situation is something Whitney likely would not have made public:

“Although she spoke about her struggle with drugs, the interventions, her daughter Krissi and issues in her marriage, she never PUBLICLY spoke about her father’s stealing from her or revealed any claim that she had been molested,” Cissy noted in her statement. “IF she was molested I do not believe she would have wanted it to be revealed for the first time to thousands, maybe millions of people in a film.”

In the doc,’ Whitney’s close friend/assistant of many years, Mary Jones, revealed that Whitney painfully confided in her about having been sexually abused by older cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, between ages 7 and 9. Whitney’s brother, Gary Houston, also corroborated the allegations, when he revealed to “Whitney” documentary director, Kevin MacDonald, that he, too, was sexually abused by Dee Dee.

For the first time, Cissy and Dionne are speaking out and they are CLEARLY pissed off. Now that the “Whitney” doc’ has hit theaters nationwide, the ladies have released a lengthy statement to People, denouncing the claims and also revealing apparent friction among the family. Cissy and Dionne want the world to know that even though Cissy’s own son, Gary, confirmed the sexual abuse, they still have doubts. They’re also outraged- not necessarily by the possibility that Whitney and Gary were sexually abused- but because an apparent family secret which makes them look dysfunctional, has been exposed…at least that’s what it seems, based on their statement. Dee Dee may have had her personal challenges but the idea that she would have molested my children is overwhelming and for us unfathomable. We cannot reconcile the Public’s need to know about Whitney’s life as justification for invasion of her privacy or the charge against Dee Dee, a charge which neither Whitney nor Dee Dee is here to deny, refute or affirm. Neither I, Dionne, nor my son Michael who was very close to his sister, and in the film is VERY candid about their drug use, has ever heard these allegations; we have never heard anything remotely connected to the crimes charged against Dee Dee in the film. How can that be fair to my daughter, to Dee Dee, or to our family?

I spent many years in recording studios (sometimes with Dionne and/or Dee Dee) where I earned my living. I also went “on the road” with my group The Sweet Inspirations to try to help provide a good life for my family BUT my children always came first in my heart and in my life. When I was away they did not stay with four or five different families; they stayed at home where their longtime babysitter, Phyllis, or my dear friend Bae or their father took care of them. In all the years I traveled Dee Dee, who was 21 years older than Whitney, NEVER BABYSAT for them.”

When news spread, that there was a new documentary, titled “Whitney,” centered around the life of our beloved Whitney Houston, many were cautiously intrigued. The documentary, spearheaded by Whitney’s sis-in-law/ex-manager, Pat Houston, was promised to give never before heard of intimate details about the late singer. After trailers of the doc’ were released, anticipation really built up, because it revealed details given by Whitney’s family and friends, that the world really didn’t know- such as she and her brother, Gary Houston (Pat’s husband) were sexually assaulted.

Pat Houston Tells What Cissy Never Knew

Of course, the molestation revelation was news to fans, but it’s just been confirmed that it was news to the Houston siblings’ mother, Cissy Houston, as well. According to the Associated Press, Cissy had no clue that her children were molested back in the day…and by their own famous cousin at that, allegedly. It wasn’t until it was time to shoot the documentary, that Pat told Cissy what both Gary and Whitney had reportedly previously confessed.

In a recent interview, Pat admitted it was very “difficult” to tell Cissy the news, but she knew it had to be done:

“It was deeply a revelation for her. You think about her, and it being a bit overbearing for her to hear — and her kids not telling her. That’s pretty tough to have to deal with,” said Pat.

Family Confirmed Whitney & Gary Houston Were Sexually Abused

As we previously reported, several family members were interviewed for the documentary, including mother, Cissy Houston; sister-in-law, Pat Houston; brother, Gary Houston; as well as Whitney’s ex-husband, Bobby Brown. Alleged Molestation Led To Whitney’s Sexuality Conflict & Unhappiness, Says Family & Friends

Dee Dee passed away in 2008, but the turmoil she reportedly left behind caused heartbreak and lifelong pain. Whitney’s aunt, Mary, believes the sexual abuse was a contributing factor into decisions Whitney later made in her love life…

Via DM: Mary claimed the abuse made Whitney “question her sexual preference” – prompting her to demonstrate that she was heterosexual by marrying Bobby Brown.

The director of the “Whitney” doc,’ Kevin MacDonald also believes that the reported molestation led Whitney to have unresolved issues about herself and her sexuality:

“I don’t think you can explain anyone’s life from one particular event that’s happened to them. But I think that it’s certainly fair to say that it’s maybe, in my opinion, the major contributor to Whitney’s unhappiness,” MacDonald said. “That and the fact that she never talked about it, and that nobody in the family talked about this and clearly it happened as you’d learned in the film.”

Whitney Later Grew Close To Her Sexual Abuser?

The film sheds light on Whitney’s personal struggles and it also presents her long rumored bisexual relationship with best friend, Robyn Crawford, as fact. Ironically, Dee Dee Warwick and Whitney grew closer later in life and it was suggested in the film, that their similar struggles to hide their sexuality is what bonded them:

Via DailyMail- One source close to the Warwick family said: “Dee Dee was openly lesbian in the music industry. Not necessarily in public, but I don’t think that was a secret within the music industry. … Whitney felt closer to Dee Dee by virtue of them sharing a similar orientation. It is interesting that there is that connection.”

Dionne Warwick’s sister, Dee Dee, passed away in 2008, at age 63 and she also struggled with drug addiction throughout her life.

Director: Family Struggled To Tell All

The film’s Oscar Award winning director, Kevin MacDonald, admitted, in an interview with Deadline, that prior to filming, he had no clue the Houston family would drop such huge, yet delicate revelations.

Kevin MacDonald: I interviewed Pat Houston and Gary Houston. … [Gary] told me that he was abused by a woman in the family, and Pat Houston told me that, yes, Whitney had said to her, “This is what happened.” […] Then I [interviewed] Mary Jones … and she told me Whitney’s point of view on this, and what Whitney had told her in detail, and how important she felt it was for understanding Whitney, but how scared everyone was to talk about it.

Hopefully, Whitney’s struggles and triumphs will ultimately help others who have gone through similar situations.

The father of Robyn Crawford- the longtime friend/former assistant/rumored lover, to the beloved Whitney Houston- spoke out for the first time about the situation between the two ladies.

Before we get into what he’s revealing, we wanna point out what we, here at ILoveOldSchoolMusic,  always say: Celebrities are real people, with real life issues, just like the rest of us. Robyn Crawford’s Father Speaks Out

In a 2017 interview with Radar Online, Robyn Crawford’s father, Dennis Crawford, revealed that he’d already known- since Robyn and Whitney were kids- that they were in a romantic relationship:

“I knew 40 years ago, we all knew,” Dennis Crawford, 79, insisted to Radar today. “I saw them together.” The doting father, who said he saw the two women holding hands and kissing, accepted his daughter’s longtime romance with the famous singer. “When she told me, there was nothing I could do about it except love her,” he recalled.

Other’s Close To Whitney Make Similar Claims

In the April 2017 documentary, Whitney: Can I Be Me, Whitney’s bodyguard (whom the film The Bodyguard was loosely based on), Kevin Ammons, spoke about how the love Bobby Brown and Robyn had for Whitney drew serious tension:

Robyn was the person who was keeping her together,” Lavar recalls.

Bobby Brown

Bobby Brown has made recent claims similar to Ammons.’ Bobby stated, in an interview, that during his marriage to Whitney, he knew about her alleged relationship with Robyn. He also said her mom, Cissy, was the one who ultimately pushed Robyn out of Whitney’s life, leaving her severely depressed. Bobby expressed that he believes if Robyn would have still been in Whitney’s life, Whitney would still be alive today.

What Whitney’s Mother Cissy Houston Says

Many of you may recall when Cissy did an interview with Oprah in 2013 and stated that it would have “absolutely” have bothered her if Whitney and Robyn really did have a lesbian relationship. Later on, in her Remembering Whitney, Cissy Houston wrote about Whitney and Robyn:

“I just didn’t want her [Robyn] with my daughter. I know nothing about a romantic relationship. That’s what everybody said, but they didn’t know either.”

Myrna Smith, a member of the group, The Sweet Inspirations, sang back up for rock & roll legend, Elvis Presley. Smith had many fond memories of Elvis in which she reflected on his love for music as well as his love for black women, particularly her.

Sweet Inspirations:

The Sweet Inspirations was an R&B gospel group comprised of four members: Cissy Houston, mother of the late Whitney Houston, Sylvia Shernwell, Myrna Smith, and Estelle Brown. While they were successful in their own right as a group with many hit recordings, the one song that stood out the song was their song, “Sweet Inspiration.” Back in the 60’s, that song had many people bopping their heads and tapping their feet.

One of the people who loved that song so much was allegedly Elvis himself. According to Elvis.com, Elvis loved the song so much that he contacted the group to have them sing back up for him. The ladies of Sweet Inspiration worked with Elvis in Vegas, on his national concert tours, and on recordings from 1969 to 1977. Aside of Sweet Inspirations, Smith sang back up for Elvis in his Graceland recordings as well. Cissy Houston left in 1969 to pursue her own solo career but the Sweet Inspirations remained loyal to the king of rock & roll.

It was clear that Elvis loved his background vocalists. Elvis loved gospel and soul music. The Sweet Inspirations did a great job of blending their voices to make a soulful sound that Elvis couldn’t get enough of. Even after singing and performing in concerts, they allegedly would continue to sing and jam all night. Presley reportedly called the ladies his “church sisters”. Up until the day she died, Myrna Smith made a living telling old stories of Elvis and even singing as a back up singer for Elvis impersonators. Despite her financial struggles, she was determined to keep her career and her friendships with her group mates going for as long as she could. According to the documentary This Time, The Sweet Inspirations were hoping to resurrect their fortunes with the help of producer Peitor Angell, however, their fame would never be the same without the original King being alive and well. Tragically, Smith died at the age of 69 on December 24, 2010 from kidney failure. Because of Smith’s memories, we learned two things about the King of Rock and Roll: he loved black women and he was possibly not racist.
