When Bad Boy Records rap legend, Craig Mack, passed away on March 12, 2018, at age 47, the world was shocked for several reason. He was way too young, and he reportedly died from congestive heart failure at such a young age. It wasn’t until after his passing, that reports began to spread that Craig had long been battling various health conditions during the decades he was away from the public’s eye.

Following his death, his rare last interview surfaced, in which he revealed that his life had been in danger after receiving threats from an unnamed music executive.

Craig Mack Recalled Threatening Life Altercation

Vlad TV shared footage from Craig Mack’s interview, in which he appeared to be in ailing health. His brain and memory were in perfect tact though, as he recalled the hostile incident that almost claimed his life.

According to Mack, a famous record label exec’ threatened to kill him for not fulfilling the musical obligations within one of his contracts. After Craig refused to record music, without getting paid the agreed upon amount, he says he then rolled around with a gun on his lap, prepared to kill at will because he feared for his life.

Craig Mack: “Next thing I know, money [the music exec] comes with this bullish, mafia mentality..him and his goons…talking about, ‘Yo, you owe us a album.’ And I’m like…’I don’t owe you sh*t, you owe me money. […] So if you could come up with the rest of this dough, then we could come up with the rest of this album. No dough, no records…that’s it.'”

Following that altercation, Mack said the threat was heightened. The unnamed music exec reportedly responded by reminding Mack of how much “muscle” he had to make something happen to him, if he did not show up to the studio to finish recording. Mack says he agreed to meet the exec at the studio, but sensed he was being set up and therefore took his “gunman” with him:

CM: “So I said ‘Alright, meet me up there at 7’o’clock.’ So I went and got one of my gunman, I’m not gon’ mention his name either…he came with me up there. … So they saw him and they fell back, because they were gon’ do something to me.”

Mack said that he and the label owner then talked it out, but he still refused to record the album if he was not paid accordingly.

In the days, weeks, months, that proceeded their tense studio conversation, Mack said he started receiving several death threats on the streets, as a result. This led to his paranoia at that time and he then mentally prepared himself to kill the music executive. According to Craig Mack, it was only by a chance spiritual awakening, that suddenly snapped him out of his quest for revenge. That awakening was a series of gospel songs that randomly played on the radio while he was seated in his car, picking up his ‘sister’ from work.

That begin Craig’s long journey into the secluded lifestyle he led as a member of a reported religious organization, Overcomer Ministry, located in Walterboro, South Carolina.

Diddy & Others Were Banned From Craig Mack’s Funeral

Although it’s still unclear which music exec’ Craig Mack referred to regarding the threats he received, ironically Mack’s previous record label exec, Sean “Diddy” Combs, was reportedly ‘banned’ from his funeral by the religious cult Mack was a member of.

To Diddy’s credit though, the congregation banned MOST of Craig Mack’s hip hop associates of the past, according to Mack’s longtime friend, DJ Scratch. Also for the record, Diddy reportedly offered to pay for Mack’s funeral services…but according to DJ Scratch, the congregation oddly refused his help.

Craig Mack, sadly passed away on March 12 (2018), at the age of just 47, reportedly from congestive heart failure. Much like his death and the details of the last years of life, Mack’s memorial/funeral services were just as surprising and mysterious, according to his friend, DJ Scratch.

Mack’s Service Was A “Very Weird Day”

Mack was buried March 28th, on the property of Overcomer Ministry located in Walterboro, South Carolina, which is where Mack reportedly lived and dedicated his life to Christianity. DJ Scratch was in attendance at the memorial service and posted his experience on Instagram, with a shocking caption that pointed fingers at Sean “Diddy” Combs and many others in the music game:

“I’ve never been to a service for someone famous & I was the only famous person to show up. Very weird day today, but what puts a smile on my face is that Lil Bro was at peace way before he passed away. That’s what matters most to me,” DJ Scratch wrote.

Scratch then hit up his Instagram with another shout out to Mack’s childhood friend, for being there for the brotha:

“I want to salute my Bro Alvin Toney. Alvin is the man that put together Craig Mack’s NY Memorial service.” Then he proceeded to tell a brief history on how Alvn was the one who took Craig Mack to meet meet Diddy and “got him a deal on Bad Boy,” where Mack released the label’s first platinum selling hit ever.

Scratch’s reveal, that he was “the only” famous person in attendance, displayed his heartbreak over the fact that most of Mack’s music industry friends weren’t their to pay homage to the late rap legend. Of course it didn’t take long for that news to spread and one of the main celebrities fans slammed, was the cat who first released Craig Mack’s music in the 90’s, Diddy. BUT THEN THIS HAPPENED…

Diddy Was BANNED From Mack’s Funeral

A few hours after posting his frustration about Diddy and others not attending Mack’s funeral, DJ Scratch discovered even more shocking news about why Diddy was not there. Turns out it was due to two reasons- (1) Diddy didn’t even know the services had already taken place; and (2) Diddy was banned from the services by the religious congregation that Mack belonged to. Scratch revealed that Diddy also offered to pay for Mack’s funeral, but there’s a backstory to that as well. After learning all this, Scratch went back to Instagram to clear things up to his fans:

“When I left Craig’s memorial service I called @Diddy to thank him for giving Craig the platform for the world to know Craig Mack’s music,” Scratch wrote. “I told him I just left the service, he said ‘They buried Craig already, what service are you talking about?!?’ He didn’t know about the memorial service. @diddy offered to pay for Craig Mack’s funeral, but the religious community Craig was in declined. None of his Friends or colleagues were allowed to attend his funeral. Diddy respected their wishes. Craig was immediately buried on the property where he lived. Yesterday’s service was a memorial for Craig’s friends in NY & for fans to attend thrown by Craig’s childhood friend Alvin Toney.”

He continued:

“If you look at my post the day Craig passed I praised @Diddy for signing Craig because I saw what he went through. I said no famous people showed up to Craig’s memorial service was weird because I saw so much love online, but I didn’t see a line outside. If @Diddy didn’t say yes, there be no Flava in our ears. Salute Diddy!!!”

Not really sure why Diddy- the man responsible for giving Craig Mack his first big break- was banned from honoring him at the services, but pretty sure he’s at least thankful that Scratch cleared this up publicly. Rest on Craig Mack.

Although it’s been years since the hip hop world heard the dope rapper spit, upon hearing about his untimely passing, many fans instantly craved a sense of 90’s nostalgia in honor of Craig Mack’s memory. For the past 24 hours, many have been blasting Mack’s 1994, classic remix for “Flava In Your Ear.” That song set the tone for Bad Boy Records, because as Diddy recently pointed out, it was the label’s first hit ever. It was also the first time fans had the opportunity to hear Craig Mack, L.L. Cool J., Rampage, Busta Rhymes, and Notorious B.I.G. on one song. Speaking of Biggie, shortly following Craig Mack’s unfortunate passing, details have now re-emerged about the history he and Craig Mack had back in the day. Let’s just say that it wasn’t all that it was cracked up to be.

The United Front

In the mid 90’s, Craig Mack was oftentimes seen in interviews and shows together. Unbeknownst to most of us at that time, the so called brotherhood we thought we were witnessing, was anything but, when it came to Biggie and Mack. In fact, according to what Biggie revealed back in the day, he was only on Mack’s song and seen in public with him to put up a united front for the sake of their Bad Boy clique.

Their dislike for each other was so prevalent, that it eventually got to a point in which Biggie outright admitted that he didn’t “fu*k with” Craig Mack in a televised interview. Don’t take our word for that though, see for yourself in the video clip below (Biggie says this at the 1:47 mark of the video)…

Why Didn’t They Get Along?

Although Biggie, nor Craig Mack, never publicly revealed the exact reasons they did not get along, there were many talks around the industry as to why that was the case. Craig Mack had a reputation for being a very outspoken, flamboyant cat back in the day. He was also known to be a tad stern whenever label CEO, Sean “Diddy” Combs, tried to persuade Mack to try certain styles of music tracks that would help elevate his career to the next level. Diddy and Mack had extensive discussions about the direction of his next project, following the hype of his Grammy nominated “Flava In Your Ear” single, but apparently, Mack wasn’t down with Diddy’s ideas at that time.

Biggie reportedly witnessed many of the issues Diddy was having with Mack and over time, he may have grown to dislike Mack’s personality. Not sure if they clashed face to face, but based on the fact that Biggie had no problem publicly saying “I don’t fu*k with” Craig Mack, it’s probably safe to assume the two emcees had some type of disagreement(s) behind the scenes.

Mack’s Life & Career After Bad Boy

By 1995, Mack reportedly got fed up with Diddy trying to elevate his music and decided to ask Diddy to release him from his contract. Diddy apparently granted Mack his wish at that time and unfortunately, that was pretty much the end of Mack’s career as we all knew it.

Even though two years after leaving Bad Boy, Mack released his second album, Operation: Get Down, on the labels, Street Life Records and Scotti Brothers Records, it didn’t have the success that his Bad Boy album garnered. It wasn’t until 2002, that we saw Mack back with his Bad Boy fam,’ only to appear on one single, Diddy’s hit song, “I Need a Girl (Part One).” By 2006, Craig Mack released another single, “Mack Tonight.”

Following that release, it wasn’t until a 2012 Youtube video surfaced (shown above), that fans ultimately learned where the brotha had disappeared to. In that video, it became apparent that Mack had become deeply devoted to his Pentecostal Christian faith as he testified to the preacher and congregation at Overcomer Ministry in Walterboro, South Carolina. Mack was seen proudly speaking into the microphone, testifying and referring to his past hip hop career as “wickedness.”

Until his last days, Craig Mack remained devoted to his religion and also resided on Overcomer Ministry’s compound in S.C.. Erick Sermon revealed, on the day of Mack’s passing, that he’d was in the middle of working on tracks for what would have been Craig Mack’s new 2018 album comeback. That proves that even though Mack’s lifestyle changed, his genuine love for music never died, just like his musical impact never will. Rest on Craig Mack.
