Dionne Warwick doesn’t mind doing some looking back on She’s Back, her first new studio album in five years. The 15-song set, due out May 17, includes new recordings of her hits “What the World Needs Now Is Love” and 1979’s “Deja Vu” — the latter featuring a guest appearance by Krayzie Bone of Bone Thugs-N-Harmony (Billboard).

The album is filled with timeless tunes that remind you of Warwick’s stellar and solid career. The singer tells ESSENCE she’s proud of building a musical career that’s based on music that have “a beginning, a middle and an end.”

When asked if today’s music also has classics, Warwick laughed and said, firmly, “Not yet.”

“I don’t know if 10 years from now, anybody can actually sing the songs of our babies today. That’s not, as you guys say, ‘throwing shade,’ it’s looking at it with reality,” she explained.

Shocking Allegations

Many viewers of Kevin McDonald’s 2018 documentary Whitney were treated to never before seen footage of Whitney during the height and downfall of her twenty-plus year career with many unanswered questions being revealed and tons of new information being discussed.

Essence reports aside from the drug allegations and rumors of animosity between her ex-husband Bobby Brown and longtime confidant Robyn Crawford there was one moment in the film where Whitney’s former assistant Mary Jones spoke about an alleged molestation Whitney received from a family member, none other than Dee Dee Warwick.

“I finally managed to persuade Mary Jones, who was Whitney’s longtime assistant and probably knew her in her last years more than anybody, to talk [on camera],” Macdonald told Vanity Fair last May. “She talks about what Whitney felt and what effect it had on her. So we changed the whole cut at the very last minute. It was kind of a detective story to get that piece of information, which changed how I felt about Whitney and how I felt about the story.”

Whitney’s brother Gary also spoke during the documentary about being molested by Dee Dee Warwick as well, which adds another layer of tragedy to this already sad tale.

Over the past month, there’s been lots of talk about Dionne Warwick’s sister Dee Dee and the molestation allegations brought against her. Now for the first time, Dionne Warwick is speaking out about the situation and she definitely isn’t pleased with all the rumors. As expected, she’s standing by Dee Dee and she has a few choice words to say about all the drama surrounding the new documentary Whitney.

Molestation Claims In ‘Whitney’:

For those who haven’t seen the Houston family’s documentary on the life of Whitney Houston, her brother Gary actually revealed claims about him and Whitney being molested by Dee Dee Warwick. When Dionne sat down with Larry King a couple days ago, she was asked about the situation she quickly responded. She made it clear she’s not buyin’ any of the claims and she wasted no time refuting the rumors:

“I have tried to refrain from responding to that,” the 77-year-old singer explained. “First of all, it’s totally hogwash. My sister would never, ever have done anything to do any harm to any child, especially within our family. And for those lies to be perpetuated in this so-called documentary film, I think it’s evil.”

She went on to offer a scathing statement about the people responsible for fueling the rumors: 

“I will never, and I mean this, ever forgive those who perpetuated this insanity,” Dionne added.

Presumably she’s referring to the actual people who discussed the the allegations in their family’s “Whitney” documentary. Check out a clip from Dionne’s interview:

The latest news follows details from the newly released documentary. After the film’s release in July, it triggered various responses from people who were close to Whitney and fans wondered if there was truth to Gary’s claims.

According to Whitney’s longtime assistant, Mary Jones, who Whitney referred to as her ‘aunt,’ the information was true. During an interview with People magazine, she explained why she’d decided to share those alleged truths with the world:

“I was close to Whitney, she confided in me and I struggled tremendously deciding whether to share this secret or keep to myself,” Jones previously told the publication in an exclusive statement. “I deeply love and respect Dionne, Cissy, and their entire families, and my intention was never to embarrass anyone in the family, but rather to bring to light that Whitney was subjected to something painful and troubling as a child. And it’s something that happens to other innocent kids and goes unspoken too much.”

She continued, “I decided to share the story so that people might understand that throughout her entire life Whitney carried this with her, and the weight of it was immense. Whitney was a wonderful woman, an angel, and she did not drag herself down all alone — there was a cause.”

However, Cissy Houston has a totally different take on the situation. Apparently, she’s standing by her niece and finds the claims quite hard to believe. The Houston family matriarch also released a statement to People magazine on behalf of herself and the Warwick family. “We cannot overstate the shock and horror we feel and the difficulty we have believing that my niece Dee Dee Warwick . . . molested two of my three children,” Cissy told Dionne Warwick’s interview with Larry King is scheduled to premiere on Hulu August 15.

An interesting Instagram post of a clip from a Dionne Warwick interview has caught the attention of social media users everywhere. The clip was posted to a Gladys Knight fan page and it looks like many fans are in total agreement with Warwick’s opinion. Since everyone is entitled to their opinion, Dionne Warwick has made her opinion quite clear.

Apparently, she ain’t feeling the so-called evolution of the music industry. While young listeners may be captivated by the music that’s being released today, old schoolers, like Warwick, have something far better to compare it to – the old school originality of the past:

Warwick: “I think that’s what happened to our industry – literally – everybody became a clone. If you turn on the radio today, you can’t tell who’s singing what.”

Compared to the described “clones” of today, Warwick insists there’s something uniquely different about the singers of the past and we couldn’t agree with her more. Sadly, that distinctive difference isn’t heard in today’s music:

“But you know when you hear Gladys Knight. You know when you hear Patti LaBelle, you know when you hear Johnny Mathis, and you know when you hear Frank Sinatra.”

She continued:

Warwick: “But I defy you, to turn on the radio and listen to one after the other after the other, and then after 10 to 15 minutes of rest, tell me who sang that first song. They all sound the same. And that has nothing to do with their talents. Their talents are being limited by their recording companies. ‘I want you to look like, I want you to be like, I want you to sound like,’ Why?”

As expected, Dionne Warwick’s words have ticked off quite a few new age listeners. Many have taken to social media to throw jabs at her about the music of the past and how they believe there were similarities there as well. Others credited her statement to her age.

One person wrote, “Girl. Like them dime a dozen girl groups wasn’t all singing the same three part harmonies. No disrespect miss Warwick but you know that ain’t no new ish. Some sound the same, other stand out. Time and time again.”

Another person agreed, “She right but she wrong for saying back then it didn’t exist wasn’t the white artist taking their music like what Elvis did to chuck berry or James Brown.”

Then someone else offered their assumption, “It’s cause she’s not hip no more!!! If this was her generation she would know who is who.”

“This is the dumbest comment I have seen today…,” wrote another youngin’ about Ms. Warwick’s statement.

While Dionne Warwick’s words may have ruffled a few feathers for the younger generation, many social media users are actually agreeing with her. As the post continues to circulate online, people are commending music legend for speaking out and sharing her brutally honest opinion:

One person wrote, “Random basic nothing music today …I was so lucky to grow up with brilliance.” Another person agreed, “Back in the day sanging in distinctive unique voices, your OWN. None of that manufactured nasal stuff.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy Houston, at this time. Clearly, the past 6 years have been horrific for the 84 year old Houston family matriarch. Ever since losing Whitney in 2012, things have only gotten worse. After then losing her grandbaby, Bobbi Kristina, and now dealing with her son, Gary’s, revelation that he and Whitney were sexually abused by her niece, Dee Dee Warwick- it’s a lot and has reportedly taken a severe toll on her health.

What Cissy Is Reportedly Battling

It’s now been reported by Radar Online, that Cissy is currently battling dementia, and a family source says the latest stress factors within their family caused the symptoms to seemingly rapidly progress:

Via Radar Online: [Cissy Houston] has been battling her own health issues, RadarOnline.com has learned exclusively. “She’s in the early stages of dementia,” a source told Radar of the Grammy-winning Gospel singer. “She repeats herself a lot and doesn’t remember what she says. She just says she’s getting old.”

Recent claims made by Whitney’s brother, Gary, that he and his songstress sister were molested as children by their cousin, Dee Dee Warwick, have made her health woes more of a concern for family. “The family is already fractured enough,” said the source, “but she has had enough clarity to know what’s going on with these claims and is very upset.”

This comes on the heels of the family endorsed documentary, “Whitney,” which Cissy and several other family members participated in. This also comes soon after Cissy and her niece/singer, Dionne Warwick (77), released a pissed off statement to blast their family. They are outraged with certain family members, for revealing details of the reported molestation Gary and Whitney Houston apparently endured from Dionne’s late sister, Dee Dee in the film. In their lengthy statement to People Magazine, here’s part of what Cissy and Dionne stated:

“My niece Dionne Warwick and I make this statement to raise our voices above the din surrounding the release of the film, Whitney. Although the film is marketed as a Houston Family approved/endorsed project, neither my son, Michael, Dionne nor I knew of the allegations of abuse, the direction the film would take, until two days before the screening at Cannes. […]

We cannot…overstate the shock and horror we feel and the difficulty we have believing that my niece Dee Dee Warwick (Dionne’s sister) molested two of my three children.

I’ve been told—as justification for the invasive theme of this film—that Whitney was a public person and therefore the public has a right to know any and everything about her. I say, NO, she was a famous person … a singer, an actress, a quiet but generous philanthropist. She wasn’t running for office, asking for money or trying to win the right to run anyone’s life. Her job does not entitle the “public” to know every intimate detail of her life beyond what she herself revealed during her lifetime. Although she spoke about her struggle with drugs, the interventions, her daughter Krissi and issues in her marriage, she never PUBLICLY spoke about her father’s stealing from her or revealed any claim that she had been molested. IF she was molested I do not believe she would have wanted it to be revealed for the first time to thousands, maybe millions of people in a film.

Whitney’s brother, Gary Houston, also corroborated the allegations, when he revealed to “Whitney” documentary director, Kevin MacDonald, that he, too, was sexually abused by Dee Dee.

Cissy and Dionne want the world to know that even though Cissy’s own son, Gary, confirmed the sexual abuse, they still have doubts. They’re also outraged- not necessarily by the possibility that Whitney and Gary were sexually abused- but because an apparent family secret which makes them look dysfunctional, has been exposed…at least that’s what it seems, based on their statement. We cannot reconcile the Public’s need to know about Whitney’s life as justification for invasion of her privacy or the charge against Dee Dee, a charge which neither Whitney nor Dee Dee is here to deny, refute or affirm. Neither I, Dionne, nor my son Michael who was very close to his sister, and in the film is VERY candid about their drug use, has ever heard these allegations; we have never heard anything remotely connected to the crimes charged against Dee Dee in the film. How can that be fair to my daughter, to Dee Dee, or to our family?

I spent many years in recording studios (sometimes with Dionne and/or Dee Dee) where I earned my living. I also went “on the road” with my group The Sweet Inspirations to try to help provide a good life for my family BUT my children always came first in my heart and in my life. When I was away they did not stay with four or five different families; they stayed at home where their longtime babysitter, Phyllis, or my dear friend Bae or their father took care of them. In all the years I traveled Dee Dee, who was 21 years older than Whitney, NEVER BABYSAT for them.”

Family Reveals Whitney Was Sexually Abused

The documentary,”Whitney,” was given consent by Whitney’s family and several of them were interviewed in the film, including her mother, Cissy Houston; sister-in-law, Pat Houston; brother, Gary Houston; as well as ex-husband, Bobby Brown. In the doc,’ it was revealed that Whitney was sexually abused by her famous female cousin, who was also the niece of Whitney’s mother, Cissy:

Via DailyMail- Mary Jones, Whitney’s aunt [and assistant] who found her body, claims Whitney had told her she had been sexually abused by Dee Dee Warwick – sister of singer Dionne [Warwick] – between the ages of seven and nine. She recalls Whitney saying: ‘Mary, I was [abused] too. It was a woman.’ Asked who it was, she said Miss Houston replied: ‘It was Dee Dee Warwick.’

Her half-brother Gary Garland-Houston corroborated the account and said he was also sexually assaulted by the younger sister of soul legend Dionne Warwick. […]

But Whitney never told her mother Cissy Houston about the alleged abuse because she “was ashamed,” according to her aunt. And a relative said Cissy would have attacked Dee Dee.

Whitney’s aunt, Mary, also believes the sexual abuse was a contributing factor into decisions Whitney later made in her love life…

Via DM: Mary claimed the abuse made Whitney “question her sexual preference” – prompting her to demonstrate that she was heterosexual by marrying Bobby Brown.

Whitney Later Grew Close To Her Sexual Abuser?

The film sheds light on Whitney’s personal struggles and it also presents her long rumored bisexual relationship with best friend, Robyn Crawford, as fact. Ironically, Dee Dee Warwick and Whitney grew closer later in life and it was suggested in the film, that their similar struggles to hide their sexuality is what bonded them:

Via DailyMail- One source close to the Warwick family said: “Dee Dee was openly lesbian in the music industry. Not necessarily in public, but I don’t think that was a secret within the music industry. … Whitney felt closer to Dee Dee by virtue of them sharing a similar orientation. It is interesting that there is that connection.”

Dionne Warwick’s sister, Dee Dee, passed away in 2008, at age 63 and she also struggled with drug addiction throughout her life.

Director: Family Struggled To Tell All

The film’s Oscar Award winning director, Kevin MacDonald, admitted, in an interview with Deadline, that prior to filming, he had no clue the Houston family would drop such huge, yet delicate revelations.

Kevin MacDonald: I interviewed Pat Houston and Gary Houston. … [Gary] told me that he was abused by a woman in the family, and Pat Houston told me that, yes, Whitney had said to her, “This is what happened.” […] Then I [interviewed] Mary Jones … and she told me Whitney’s point of view on this, and what Whitney had told her in detail, and how important she felt it was for understanding Whitney, but how scared everyone was to talk about it.

Hopefully, Whitney’s struggles and triumphs will ultimately help others who have gone through similar situations.

The Beef Between Aretha & Dionne

Before we get into how Gladys eloquently shaded one of her two friends over this situation, we’ll recap what Aretha actually said about Dionne for those who missed it: In a nutshell the ‘Queen of Soul’ is still pissed off with Dionne for a mishap she stated FIVE YEARS AGO at Whitney Houston’s (Dionne’s cousin) 2012 funeral. Aretha couldn’t attend Whitney’s funeral due to her swollen foot. So all Dionne said about Aretha (whose nickname is Re and/or Re-Re) while speaking at the podium during the funeral, was “Re’s not here, but she is here…she loves Whitney as if she were born to her. She is her godmother.” No big deal right? Wrong! Aretha still has a problem with Dionne mistakenly referring to her as Whitney’s ‘godmother,’ a common misconception that millions have thought for decades. In a recent interview, Aretha let the Associated Press know that she ‘felt the comment was damaging to her and planned to address it at a later date.’

In that same AP interview, Aretha then revealed that she recently saw Dionne at the Tribeca Film Festival and shaded the hell outta her yet again:

Via AP: “She said, ‘Give me a hug.’ I said, ‘Oh hell no. You couldn’t be serious,'” Franklin said.

Dionne Warwick responded through her representative with a brief statement: “She will not dignify a response to the statement made by Aretha Franklin.”

And as of today, soul music icon, Gladys Knight, has something to say about both of her iconic friends. She basically indicated that Ms. Franklin needs to chill out with the Dionne bashing and let the drama go. Here’s what she revealed to HipHopHollywood:

“I know my sister, Dionne. It ain’t nothing to her. Now Re (Aretha), is a little bit different…LOL. It’s just one of those things, everybody got their little knick knacks going on. “Dionne is gon’ speak her mind and she’s gon’ tell the truth. Re is gon’ be sensitive and cause a whole lot of rift raft.”

And there ya’ have it ILOSM family! Beef does not stop with reality TV stars…it is very much so alive and well within the lives of some of our favorite soul legends also. Via AP: The Queen of Soul is coming out swinging against fellow legend Dionne Warwick, accusing her of making up a story that she was Whitney Houston’s godmother, even though the alleged offense happened five years ago at Houston’s funeral. “She blatantly lied on me … fully well knowing what she was doing,” Aretha Franklin said in a phone interview.

Franklin called The Associated Press on Tuesday, after sending a lengthy fax the day before, to address what she claimed was a “libelous” statement against her made five years ago at Houston’s funeral. At the time, Warwick told funeral-goers that Franklin was there and introduced her, but then realized she wasn’t in attendance. “‘Ree’s not here, but she is here,” Warwick said, referring to Franklin by a nickname. “She loves Whitney as if she were born to her. She is her godmother.” At the time, Franklin said she was suffering from swollen feet and had to skip the funeral so she could perform later that night at Radio City Music Hall in New York, which she said she was contractually obligated to do.

Though Cissy Houston, Whitney Houston’s mother, said in the days afterward that Franklin wasn’t Houston’s godmother (it was Darlene Love), Franklin felt the comment was damaging to her and planned to address it at a later date. “There’s been so much going on around her (Houston), around the service, around the drugs, around her and Bobby (Brown) supposed to be fighting, I didn’t want to add anything to that and I didn’t want to be a part of that,” she said.

While the story that Houston was Franklin’s goddaughter has been part of her story for decades, Franklin said she first met Houston when Houston was a child — and she was far too busy to be anyone’s godmother.

But Wait…It Gets Worse: Their Recent Encounter

Via AP: Franklin saw Warwick last week at the Tribeca Film Festival’s premiere of mentor Clive Davis’ documentary, “Clive Davis: The Soundtrack of Our Lives,” … Franklin said Warwick tried to talk to her backstage.”She said, ‘Give me a hug.’ I said, ‘Oh hell no. You couldn’t be serious,'” Franklin said.

When asked if she wanted an apology from Warwick, she said: “I don’t care about her apology, at this point it isn’t about an apology, it’s about libel.” She added: “We’ve never been friends and I don’t think that Dionne has ever liked me.”

Warwick’s Response To Aretha’s Bashing

Via AP: When asked for comment, Warwick’s representative Angelo Ellerbee said: “She will not dignify a response to the statement made by Aretha Franklin.”

To understand why this is even more entertaining is to understand the personalities of both soul legends. Neither one of them are known to take any mess off of anyone. We’ve all seen enough ‘diva-like’ interviews on Aretha to know she’ll snap on you in a heartbeat. And I learned that Dionne will boldly speak her mind, when I saw her on Celebrity Apprentice a few years ago: She called RHOA’s, Nene Leakes, a coward to her face when she was pissed with her, and she referred to another female contestant as a “heffer” when she thought she was trying to run game on her during the competition. So uh, yeah…this could get interesting. We’ll keep y’all posted.
