Sad news to share today I Love Old School Music fam’…Lisa Marie Presley — Elvis Presley’s daughter and Michael Jackson’s ex-wife — has passed away at 54 years young.

According to reports, Lisa suffered a cardiac arrest Thursday (1/12/23) morning and was ultimately pronounced dead after being taken to a Los Angeles, CA hospital.

On Thursday morning, Lisa’s housekeeper found her unresponsive inside her Calabasas home. Lisa’s ex-husband, Danny Keough, had just arrived home (they lived together), and performed CPR on her until paramedics arrived and took it over from there, administering an epinephrine shot to Lisa, in efforts to revive her. At that time, paramedics were able to revive her pulse, after which they transported her to the hospital.

Priscilla Presley with daughter, Lisa Marie Presley

Lisa Marie’s mother and Elvis’s widow, Priscilla Presley has now released a statement, via her rep, regarding her daughter’s sudden passing:

“Priscilla Presley and the Presley family are shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie. They are profoundly grateful for the support, love and prayers of everyone, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time.”

Lisa Marie Presley was her parents only child. Throughout the years she followed in her dad’s path, becoming a singer and songwriter, releasing her debut album, “To Whom It May Concern,” in 2003.

Lisa Marie Presley with then-husband, Michael Jackson

Lisa’s marriage to Michael Jackson became one of the most talked about marriages of that era. She married the king of ‘music’ one month after she and her first husband, Danny, divorced.

Although she and Danny were still divorced at the time of her death, the two still lived together up util her last days, and clearly cared deeeply for one another.

Lisa is survived by her Riley Keough and twin girls Harper and Finley Lockwood. Sadly, in 2020, her son, Benjamin Keough, died by suicide.

This is so heartbreaking and our thoughts and prayers are with Lisa Marie Presley’s children, mother, and loved ones at this time.

Myrna Smith, a member of the group, The Sweet Inspirations, sang back up for rock & roll legend, Elvis Presley. Smith had many fond memories of Elvis in which she reflected on his love for music as well as his love for black women, particularly her.

Sweet Inspirations:

The Sweet Inspirations was an R&B gospel group comprised of four members: Cissy Houston, mother of the late Whitney Houston, Sylvia Shernwell, Myrna Smith, and Estelle Brown. While they were successful in their own right as a group with many hit recordings, the one song that stood out the song was their song, “Sweet Inspiration.” Back in the 60’s, that song had many people bopping their heads and tapping their feet.

Elvis Presley with his background singers, The Sweet Inspirations (Myrna Smith pictured far right)

One of the people who loved that song so much was allegedly Elvis himself. According to Elvis.com, Elvis loved the song so much that he contacted the group to have them sing back up for him. The ladies of Sweet Inspiration worked with Elvis in Vegas, on his national concert tours, and on recordings from 1969 to 1977. Aside of Sweet Inspirations, Smith sang back up for Elvis in his Graceland recordings as well. Cissy Houston left in 1969 to pursue her own solo career but the Sweet Inspirations remained loyal to the king of rock & roll.

Lovin’ The King:

Jerry Schilling and Elvis Presley were close friends who reportedly both were attracted to Myrna Smith.

In a documentary called, This Time, Smith admitted that Elvis tried to pursue a relationship with her. This isn’t too surprising, as their have been rumors that Elvis was very fond of the ladies. However, it might surprise you that Presley loved black women as he was a rumored racist. Smith dispels those rumors with her open and candid conversation about the love she shared for Elvis. In the video, Smith shared that she and Elvis were often flirty with each other, however, they worked together. Aside from them working together, Smith had a boyfriend, Gregory, that was apart of the band as well. However, that didn’t stop the King from showing Smith love and affection. Elvis’ dear friend, Jerry Schilling, loved Smith too. Unlike the king, Schilling never stopped pursing Schilling and he eventually won her over. Smith even married Schilling briefly from 1982-1987.

It was clear that Elvis loved his background vocalists. Elvis loved gospel and soul music. The Sweet Inspirations did a great job of blending their voices to make a soulful sound that Elvis couldn’t get enough of. Even after singing and performing in concerts, they allegedly would continue to sing and jam all night. Presley reportedly called the ladies his “church sisters”. See a video below where Elvis is having a conversation with The Sweet Inspirations and Myrna is featured in the video.

Elvis Has Interesting Convo w/Sweet Inspirations Backup Singers

Up until the day she died, Myrna Smith made a living telling old stories of Elvis and even singing as a back up singer for Elvis impersonators. Despite her financial struggles, she was determined to keep her career and her friendships with her group mates going for as long as she could. According to the documentary This Time, The Sweet Inspirations were hoping to resurrect their fortunes with the help of producer Peitor Angell, however, their fame would never be the same without the original King being alive and well. Tragically, Smith died at the age of 69 on December 24, 2010 from kidney failure. Because of Smith’s memories, we learned two things about the King of Rock and Roll: he loved black women and he was possibly not racist.

James Brown once revealed why he had to basically tell Elvis Presley ‘We’re cool, but we ain’t that cool.’ The Godfather was an entertainer whom many artists wanted to be. He had it all- charisma, dancing skills, originality, unique voice, and plenty of hits. He’s one of the the most sampled artists ever and although he didn’t get paid for every sample, he still took it all in stride like a champ. There was one artist that he could not excuse though- Elvis.

James Brown ultimately became tired of watching Elvis attempting to jack everything from him- literally. In his memoir, “I FEEL GOOD A Memoir of a Life of Soul,” James Brown said:

James Brown

“Elvis Presley wanted everything I had, in addition to gospel he wanted to somehow get into soul. I had a man working for me, by the name of Bob Patton, and Elvis used to call him all the time to get my tapes, so that he could play them until he thought he had the sound down. Then he’d rent a theater for himself and friends so he could perform soul music, James Brown style. Not long after he asked me if he could use my band as a backup for a tour, but I couldn’t go for that. That was my band, and my band only.”

They say imitation is the best form of flattery and it looks like Elvis was attempting to flatter the heck out of the Godfather of Soul…geesh!

James Brown and Elvis eventually became good friends though, and after Elvis passed away, James was quoted as saying:

“I wasn’t just a fan, I was his brother. Last time I saw Elvis alive was at Graceland. We sang ‘Old Blind Barnabus’ together, a gospel song. I love him and hope to see him in heaven. There’ll never be another like that soul brother.”

We’re seeing this form of what some call “swagger jacking” or “culture vultures” happening all too often these days and I don’t want you to think I’m only referring to White artists because I’m not…Black artists are doing it also. It’s one thing to have artists who are genuine with their craft, because we can always tell when it’s real. Take Teena Marie for example, soul ran all through her veins and it was just evident. Then there are others who stand out like a sore thumb.

Now, this is no diss to Elvis at all, he did his thing and ultimately developed a unique style, but here are a few artists who seem to have taken a page out of Elvis’ book and attempted to “flatter” their idols, to no avail:

Vanilla Ice
Remember when he was supposed to be the Caucasian version of MC Hammer? Uh…he didn’t convince a lot of us with that one, although he sold a few million. After he started to get called out on the lies he’d told about “growing up in the hood” and other fictionalized attempts about his life in an attempt to sell people on his “authenticity” and that’s where he really messed up and his sales started plummeting. I guess he’s now realized that “being from the hood” is not the only way to sell rap albums, but being authentic, no matter who you are.

Milli Vanilli
This is self-explanatory. Like I said, it is not about race and Milli Vanilli are perfect examples of that. I’m not sure exactly who they were trying to imitate, other than the four singers who actually sang their vocals on their albums.

Justin Bieber
I think that deep down, Justin Beiber’s trying to emulate Chris Brown, not only in singing style and stage presence.

Thoughts, I Love Old School Music fam?’

“Elvis Presley wanted everything I had, in addition to gospel he wanted to somehow get into soul. I had a man working for me, by the name of Bob Patton, and Elvis used to call him all the time to get my tapes, so that he could play them until he thought he had the sound down. Then he’d rent a theater for himself and friends so he could perform soul music, James Brown style. Not long after he asked me if he could use my band as a backup for a tour, but I couldn’t go for that. That was my band, and my band only.”

Elvis Presley

I think that deep down, Beiber’s trying to emulate Chris Brown, not only in singing style and stage presence, but in life. Overall, he’s just a young man who is trying to still find his path, so we won’t go too hard on him.

Whitney Houston may have been the most highly publicized name in the Houston family, but the family’s musical background goes far beyond Whitney’s rise to fame. For those who don’t know, it all started with Cissy Houston. Long before she became the Houston family matriarch, the Newark, New Jersey native had a singing career of her own and she’d managed to make quite a name for herself in her younger years.

Back in the day Cissy and her siblings Anne, Larry, and Nicky formed the gospel group, The Drinkard Four. The group found success singing regularly at New Hope Baptist Church and later went on to do a live recording with RCA Records after adding Cissy’s cousins Dee Dee and Dionne Warwick to the group.

After taking up the stage name Cecily Blair, Cissy went on to record her first solo project, “This Is My Vow” on M’n’M Records in 1963. She recorded “Don’t Come Running To Me” with “One Broken Heart For Sale” before forming The Sweet Inspirations. The group consisted of Cissy, Doria Troy, and Dionne Warwick’s sister, Dee Dee Warwick. As backup singers, the ladies worked with legendary musicians, singers, songwriters and performers like Aretha Franklin, Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix. But that’s not all.

Cissy’s Initial Reservations About Elvis Presley & His Music

Elvis Presley and his then background singer, Cissy Houston

During an interview with NVLP a few years ago, Cissy admitted why she wasn’t exactly excited about singing backup for one of rock-n-roll’s biggest legends. In fact, she made it clear she wasn’t a fan of his music. Since Cissy had a great deal of respect for her gospel roots, singing for Elvis Presley wasn’t exactly the honor most fans would expect. However, things changed once she met Elvis in Las Vegas, NV. She realized he was more than just a stereotypical rock-n-roller, but a real musician.

“I wasn’t a fan of his,” she said flatly. “I just couldn’t imagine what we’d be singing behind Elvis Presley.”

Elvis Proved Cissy Wrong

Elvis

But despite her reservations, they took the job. Surprisingly, Cissy also developed a relatively close relationship with Elvis Presley despite her sentiments of his music. The music icon even gave Cissy a nickname. “When we met him, he was marvelous,” she said. “He could sing, and he did sing beautiful songs.”

Their Platonic Relationship

Although Cissy and Elvis forged a bond, the relationship went no further than music. Cissy adamantly insisted their working relationship never evolved into anything more. To her surprise, he was also a fan of gospel. So there were times they’d sing gospel together after rehearsals were over. During the five weeks they worked with him, he was the epitome of a gentlemen and he treated her with respect.

Here’s Why Cissy Walked Away From Elvis & Her Group Members

Her family needed her. While Cissy admitted she enjoyed most of her time singing backup for Elvis, along with her fellow Sweet Inspirations ‘sisters,’ she revealed there came a time when the job was a bit overwhelming. She ultimately decided to leave the group to focus on raising her children. She continued to record throughout the 70s but eventually began molding another star in the making. Cissy’s decision not to further pursue her music career led to the birth of a special gift to the world of music – the evolution of her daughter, Whitney Houston. Needless to say, Cissy’s role in Whitney’s life, musicianship, and upbringing helped to mold her into the iconic star she became. Thank you, Cissy Houston, for your vast contributions to music!
