Word on the Old School curb — as addressed in Luther’s autobiography — is that our beloved Luther Vandross had beef with the legendary Anita Baker and En Vogue back in the day. You’re probably thinking ‘Nah, not Luther!’ and that’s the same thing I said … but unbeknownst to many, Luther wasn’t one to be messed with. En Vogue’s, Cindy Herron, also confirmed this info.

En Vogue vs. Luther

Vandross’s issues with En Vogue all when down back in the day, when En Vogue suddenly decided to leave Vandross’s two-month national tour in 1993. The “official public statement” given to the public at the time, was that their abrupt departure was due to Cindy’s pregnancy…but turns out- THAT AIN’T WHAT HAPPENED!

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly that same year, Cindy Herron spilled the beans when she told EW this:

“We’ve been having a lot of problems with Luther…our nickname for him is Lucifer.”

Cindy also confirmed that Luther stopped talking to them, ordered that the two camps eat separately while on the road, and instructed his crew to hang drapes so he wouldn’t have to see the group backstage. Ain’t that something?!! ☺️ It doesn’t stop there though…according to his 2004 biography, Luther: The Life and Longing Of Luther Vandross by Craig Seymour:

“While on tour in Miami, Luther saw that a member of En Vogue had wandered over to “his side” of the drawn curtain. His temper hit full-tilt and he “actually” called the Miami police to demand the group be charged with trespassing.”

Luther was a trip, but we still love him anyway! On to his reported beef with Anita Baker back then…

Now, as far as the Luther-and-Anita Baker conflict, the story goes like this: They were not getting along when they toured together in 1988 and the rehearsals used to be heated. Why, you ask? Because Luther admitted that it always bothered him that she wouldn’t sing a duet with him. Baker reportedly apologized for not explaining to him about her pregnancy (at the time that he wanted to do a duet with her). So after that, everything was supposed to be all good…until Luther felt that Anita did him dirty again, according to his biographical book.

What happened was that Luther reportedly understood what Anita explained to him about her pregnancy. However, he also felt that they still needed to record a duet together as a type of peace offering that would permanently squash the beef and all of the rumors they they hated each other. He suggested they do a remake of Ben E. King’s “I (Who Have Nothing). Anita thought it was a good idea and agreed to do it. However, once again things went south between them on the day they were scheduled to record in Los Angeles, because Ms. Anita was nowhere to be found! “She simply didn’t show up,” Luther said. So instead, Vandross recorded the duet with Martha Wash. Luckily, Anita and Luther were said to have already mended their friendship long before Luther’s passing in 2005.

There you have it folks! Further proof that R&B beef was REAL back in the day…and even more proof that our favorite Old School artists are human. When many of us think of “beef” we either think of the Wendy’s lady from the ’80s commercials – You know, the “Where’s the beef?” lady; or we think of artists like Biggie and Tupac; or maybe even one of the shoot-’em-up-bang-bang-rappers of today. But very rarely would any of us have thought of Luther, En Vogue, nor Anita Baker beefin’ 🤷🏾‍♂️. Anywho, the point is – beef didn’t start with rap…it’s just that rap took it to a WHOLE ‘nother level.

She told it all- from back stabbing stories, to who was sleeping with the producer, and she even referred to them as “skanks”…geesh! So I guess it’s safe to say that Maxine isn’t really feelin’ her former best friends, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron right about now. The fourth original member, Dawn Robinson, wasn’t caught in the crossfire of Maxine’s verbal shots about the the group, because she left a long time ago and never officially rejoined them (other than a few performances here and there).

When asked about her stance on reuniting with her group members, Maxine said “It’s hurtful. I’m never going back. I’m never going back with those evil skanks — it ain’t going to happen.”

Here are some excerpts from the interview Maxine did with Rumor Fix:

MAXINE ON WHICH GROUP MEMBER CAUSED TENSION BY SLEEPING WITH THEIR PRODUCER
“There’s been a long standing divide between us,” she reveals. She claims En Vogue member Terry Ellis had cloudy judgement because she had a romantic relationship with Denzil Foster, who is one of the producers who put the girl group together in the early ’90s.

She claims Denzil was famous for saying, “Before I see this successful without me I’d rather tear it apart.” And, Maxine says that’s what he did.

ON HOW THE GROUP DISAGREED ON FURTHERING THEIR CAREER WITH THEIR PRODUCER

In 1994 after the success of Funky Divas, Maxine says a new record label wanted to sign them to a lucrative $15 million deal, but the girls couldn’t come to an agreement.

Maxine felt this would be a way to get out of what she considered a bad deal with Denzil and his co-producer Thomas McElroy. “We had the upper hand and had proven ourselves so it was time to fix our agreement,” she adds, “We sold 30 million records and the group never financially capitalized on the success.”

Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron sided with the founding producers and Maxine and Dawn Robinson wanted the new deal. For two years the girls fought, [then they eventually] ran out of money and signed the deal with the old record label and the old producers and released EV3.   [Each of them took] home around $280,000 before taxes. “We had been off for two or three years. We all needed that deal,” Maxine admits. Dawn was still unhappy and wanted out — so she walked away from the name and even ownership of the group.

THEN THE YOU-KNOW-WHAT HIT THE FAN WHEN THIS HAPPENED…
After a big performance on the BET Awards with Alicia Keys in 2008, En Vogue got several offers for record deals and this is what she said happened next:

“So here he is again presenting this group with a record deal with him as a producer and this record company – he’s the go between guy,” she says of Denzil. “He can’t work out his deal with the label. Even Sylvia [Rhone] had a problem with him.”

[During that time] Maxine [said] “I’m not out. I don’t care if we don’t work with these boys. I’m tired of them and I’m tired of risking everything for them. Our biggest selling song was a production without them — we can sing without you!”

“Cindy said to me, ‘Give the money back or we’ll be taking it out of your check.’ That means I’m not an equal partner – that I don’t have any say so. That was the barrier that she crossed. From that point on — I put all of them on notice.”

After that last straw, Maxine hired her own attorney to handle her business and Terry and Cindy ended up fired her from the group that she was a part of founding. As if that wasn’t enough drama, Maxine and Dawn banded together and started touring as En Vogue and then there were ultimately two separate groups of En Vogue. Terry and Cindy weren’t trying to hear that, so they took Maxine to court to prevent her from using their name. Maxine said:

“The arbitrator asked me ‘Who should I give the name too?’ Maxine says. Her response was, “I can’t imagine you taking their right to use the name –- we all had a stake in building it. Let the fans decide which En Vogue they want to see because we’re all En Vogue. We all busted our a**es to make that name what it is. We all should have the right to use the name. I wouldn’t dream of taking anything from them.”

The ending result was that Terry and Cindy won the right to use the name and Maxine eventually had to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy after taking a financial hit from that legal process.

BETRAYAL
[Maxine says] “It’s silly …  it’s crazy … it’s not fair,” she says. “I was with that group for more than 25 years – I have a stake in that trademark – we sold more than 30 million records. My voice is on most of the leads. That’s my fight. There’s no way I’m walking away from that. There’s no way until the highest judge in the land tells me. “I’ve more than earned the right to use the name – I am En Vogue.”

This is really sad, but not every story ends with a happy ending. Maxine Jones is now doing her own thing and performs solo and it’s great seeing Terry and Cindy perform together as En Vogue now, they sound just as beautiful as ever, but ain’t nothing like the original four En Vogue members. Terry said that she would love to have Maxine back in the group, but after all that went down, it doesn’t look like that’ll happen any time soon.

As bad as today’s music industry desperately needs REAL singers and female groups, we hope they will all reconsider and push their differences aside for the sake of R&B, because quite frankly, I’m ’bout sick and tired of hearing Beyonce on the radio every hour on the hour. Beyonce’s a phenomenal artist, but the music game just needs more diversity like we had back in the day, that’s all. Every last one of the En Vogue members can SANG…so please ladies, make a comeback TOGETHER soon!

Okay, let’s rewind for a minute. You remember Rene’, right? He was in the R&B group, Rene’ & Angela (with Angela Winbush), and they gave us fire joints like I’ll Be Good, Your Smile, You Don’t Have To Cry, and a bunch more.

Now, back to why he hitting the Hold On singers with an incredibly loaded law suit. According to TMZ:

En Vogue cheated on their record label and cost them over $100M … so says the company suing the group for leaving them high and dry for another label.

According to the legal docs … Rufftown Entertainment owner Rene Moore says he doled out $190K to front a huge En Vogue comeback in 2010 with OG members Cindy Herron, Terry Ellis and Maxine Jones that never happened.

Moore says they never toured or cut an album and signed with another label — Pyramid Records — in 2014.

He believes they’ve cost him a fortune and wants both the group and Pyramid to cough up any potential money they cost him — to the tune of well over $100 million.

Although the ladies of En Vogue are successful business people, we don’t know any of these ladies’ personal financial situation, nor is it our business to know. However, I’m willing to bet that even if they were only being asked to pay half of that hundred mil,’ they probably do not have it pouring in like that…at least not from music profits.

So, I’m not sure how successful Rene was hoping to be with his lawsuit, but I guess he just said to himself: ‘Hey, aim high, so that I won’t have to settle for anything ridiculously less.’

Hopefully all parties involved were able to reach a common agreement on this one…because all we – the fans – really want, is beautiful music, minus the legal battles, finger-pointing and drama.

While speaking at an event for Cincinnati Children’s Hospital in 2010, Cindy Herron sat in the audience as her husband recalled the devastating time they learned that their son had a tumor in his eye and in a serious health crisis. What transpired from their changed them all forever…

Why the hospital is special to Cindy and Glenn Braggs:

“Children’s Hospital holds a special place in my heart for myself and my wife and my son, Solomon… When I played here in Cincinnati, I would come…visit the kids here, said Braggs. I felt it was such an amazing thing that they were doing here. I would come and talk to these kids and try to give them something positive to think about. Never did I think that later on that was going to be reversed on me.”

Their son, Solomon’s, health diagnosis:

“When Solomon about six months old, we found out that he had retinal blastoma, which is a tumor on the eye,” revealed Braggs. “We were able to go to Children’s Hospital, which had a … world-renowned doctor for that particular disease. We had a great experience there, and Solomon ended up having the surgery to have his eye removed, and he has a prosthetic now.

I always say he lost his eye but he gained his life. … It’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever gone through in my life…. We really didn’t know what to expect. We met a few families that had already gone through with it, and they talked to us, but … when you go through adversity like that, you think it’s the end of the world.”

Cindy Spoke Out About Son’s Eye Condition

In 2020, Cindy Herron shared a post about their son’s eye condition to raise awareness.

Cindy: “When my youngest son was a baby he was diagnosed with a rare childhood eye cancer of the retina in his right eye called Retinoblastoma. It’s often characterized as a glow in the pupil seen in photos or in person. Without early intervention and treatment it will always become fatal. To save my son’s life his eye had to be removed and he now wears a prosthetic eye that needs to be replaced every few years until he stops growing.”

Where Their Son Is Now Is Now Is Inspiring

Glenn realized that he and Cindy were praying for the wrong blessing at that time:

“I always felt that we were praying that God would save his eye. In saving his eye, he probably would have lost his life. So by losing his eye, he gained his life… Sometimes you pray to God for the thing you think you want, and God gives you the thing you need.

It was a tough thing to go through, but when I look at him now and I see how well he’s doing at school and how it’s not really affecting him, I just look at the blessing of it all. It was just the beginning, and now he’s starting his life fresh. If you didn’t know, you wouldn’t know. … We’re proud to have him as our son.”

Solomon is now soaring in school and is like a spelling bee “genius” as his Pops calls him.  Solomon has been killin’ it in spelling bee competitions and winning 1st place, while at it. Go ‘head Solomon…you’re making your parents proud!

Maxine Jones, one of the original members of En Vogue, did an interview a few years ago, and she went ALL the way off on her former group members/ex best friends, Terry Ellis and Cindy Herron. Last year BET network revealed that En Vogue, Salt, Pepa, Spinderella and SWV have landed a new docu-series titled ‘Ladies Night’. The new docu-series follows the personal and professional drama of the iconic 90’s girl groups as they embark on a national tour.

Fast forward to the current promos launched today, one group, in particular, is absent from the promotions–En Vogue.

The 10-episode docu-series follows the personal and professional drama of the iconic 1990s girl groups En Vogue, Salt-n-Pepa, Spinderella and SWV as they embark on a national tour. With a run of shows across the U.S., these iconic artists must create, choreograph and execute a night featuring all of their famous hits. With major money on the line, the OGs will need to put their pride to the side in order to launch something truly memorable. Produced by Entertainment One’s Tara Long; Mark Herwick and Madison Merritt serve as executive producers.

A few years after Cindy Herron (center) dominated the charts with her En Vogue group members, Terry Ellis, Maxine Jones, and Dawn Robinson, she and her husband had much to be grateful for- they were expecting their fourth child together. Little did they know at that time in 2004, what lied ahead for the fate of their baby boy would test both of them in a way that no parent would ever expect.

Before we get into what Cindy’s husband revealed about the trauma their son, Solomon, endure, let us first introduce you to him. His name is Glenn Braggs and he is a retired MLB baseball legend who made major noise in the league from 1986 to 1992.
