Geesh! We never knew there was drama going on behind the scenes of the TV show, “What’s Happening.” Ernest Lee Thomas a.k.a. “Raj” said that to this very day, some people are still mad at him for attending “Rerun’s” funeral because back in the day “Rerun” caused their careers to take extreme blows.

The three main guys on the show were really great friends off the set. We’re talking about Thomas who played “Raj,” Haywood Nelson (“Dwayne”) and Berry (“Rerun”), but according to those behind the scenes, they, along with Daniel Spencer (“Dee”) and Mabel King (“Mama”), had to deal with our beloved Rerun’s antics over and over again. Turns out things got kind of ugly. Scroll down to see why Raj said folks are mad that he went to Rerun’s funeral…

Actor, Ernest Lee Thomas

The Tension That Led To Anger Up Until Rerun’s Death

The 1976 TV show was an unexpected hit. That’s when Fred Berry felt it was time to hit the jackpot and renegotiate his salary. “He could be trouble,” director Alan Rafkin said in his book, “Cue the Bunny.” Berry somehow found out that the network paid him $5000 per episode, while paying the Caucasian actors on there $8000 per episode. The director recounts that fact as well.

“Rerun” convinced “Raj” to join him in a walkout in order to negotiate higher salaries. The network gave them a little raise and the guys became one big happy family again…but not for long. Some time around the third season, the guys pulled another stunt of demands and the network pulled their own stunt and cancelled the series. Here’s how it went down according to the director:

“Eventually, the producers simply had enough of the boys’ antics and they closed the series down.”

But Ernest (“Raj”) had a different take:

“There’s a mystery over that… I remember distinctly that they had a meeting and wanted the entire cast to meet with all of the producers. And they said, ‘Fred Berry tells us that you think we’re racist. So we don’t want you working for racists and we’re going to cancel the show.’ That’s what I remember… Fred was very happy, even at that meeting. He didn’t take it back and say, ‘No, they really didn’t say it, I was the one who said it.’ He said, ‘No, you know you all said it!’ So they thought he really was telling the truth.”

The show’s final episode (in its original form) ran on April 28, 1979, but after the success of the Cosby Show in ’84, networks came a calling again for sitcom with Black stars and revived the show to call it What’s Happening Now and you guessed it, Fred Berry did it a third time.

Ernest On Rerun Apologizing Years Later…

“Fred did apologize for all of that stuff toward the end of his life. Even when he passed away, people didn’t want me to go to the funeral. There are people who are still upset with me for going to his funeral. But to me, there’s a thing called forgiveness. When someone asks you for forgiveness, there’s no reason to keep something going. I went to the funeral because he expressed that he was sorry.”

This is proof that mistakes, bad decisions and bitterness can last a lifetime and there is no time limit on forgiveness. That’s just the way it is.

Unfortunately, our beloved Rerun’s actions costs others’ their livelihood at the time, causing their careers to take extreme blows. So it’s understandable why it was so difficult for them to forgive him. On the flip side, the truth is that none of us are perfect, so it’s great that Rerun and Ernest were able to squash their beef before his untimely death. And maybe, just maybe, “Roger” kinda felt a little the same as “Rerun.” After all, he did go along with the walk-out on the other two occasions.

We came across this throwback commercial featuring Fred “ReRun” Berry’s daughter. Here at ILOSM, we weren’t all seeing eye-to-eye on what we thought of it…so we’re asking you to tell us your thoughts.

Rerun’s now-42-year-old daughter, Portia Berry-Allen aka ‘Lady Rerun’ is the splitting image of her pops. Some years ago, she starred in a TV commercial for a local auto insurance company, which has now resurfaced. In the commercial, Portia is dancing alongside other folks to a jingle.

Depending on how you look at it, following in her Pop’s footsteps can either be a good thing, or bad thing for Lady Rerun. Many would agree that it’s great that she’s trying to continue her Dad’s legacy in entertainment. On the other hand, some would say that she may unknowingly be getting exploited by some people who don’t have her –nor her father’s– best interests in mind.

Fred “Rerun” Berry; Fred’s daughter, Portia Allen

Now, typically the aforementioned factors wouldn’t be up for consideration… but based on the fact that we live in a society where mainstream media doesn’t usually celebrate beautiful, full-figured women, like Lady Rerun (unless you’re Gabourey Sidibe’), it does possibly raise a few eyebrows.

If there was absolutely no intent to exploit Lady Rerun, then that local insurance company deserves a huge hand clap for being able to recognize a talented artist when they see one…but if not, shame on them. Either way, we wish Lady Rerun all the best with her career.

Check out the commercial below and tell us if you think:
1) Lady Rerun is being exploited because of her dad’s legacy.
2) Lady Rerun is not being exploited, and she’s doing a great job following in her dad’s footsteps.
3) There is a little bit of both #1 and #2 taking place.

And below is another commercial featuring Lady Rerun…

It’s been 18 years since legendary “What’s Happening” actor, Fred “Rerun” Berry, sadly passed away in 2003, yet years later, his name still made headlines…as the result of Rerun’s widow, Essie Berry. In 2018, Mrs. Berry was embroiled in a heated legal battle with comedian/host, Steve Harvey, who eventually responded to her claims.

Rerun’s Widow’s $5 Million Claims Against Steve Harvey

Fred “Rerun” Berry’s widow/civil rights activist, Essie Berry

As we previously reported, in March 2018, Essie Berry filed a $5 million lawsuit against Steve Harvey, accusing him stalking, harassment, and ‘murder of her emotional state of mind.’

In the lawsuit, Essie claimed that in 2013 she was approached to do a reality TV show titled, “Widow, Wives, and Ex Celebrity Wives,” and she asked Steve Harvey’s ex-wife, Mary Vaughn, to join the show. Essie claims when Steve caught wind of her offer to his ex-wife, he proceeded to enforce the sealed gag order that legally prohibits Mary Vaughn from discussing Harvey in public. Mrs. Rerun also claimed that she had no clue there was a sealed gag order in place at that time, but claims Steve then “defamed” her, by allegedly accusing her of being an “extortionist” and “co-conspirator.”

'Steve Harvey's Trying To Destroy Me!' https://t.co/AWfzSlIrSs via @nationalenquirer

— Essie Berry (@ActivistBerry) April 9, 2018

Here’s what was reported:

Via RadarOnline: “Steve Harvey continued to make attempts to shatter and murder Ms. Berry’s emotional state of mind through the Texas court’s with a lie for years,” Berry wrote. “Mr. Harvey made attempts to silence Ms. Berry through malicious prosecution in order to protect his super stardom image. … With feelings of hopelessness and depression, Ms. Berry was forced to be silent for four years in order to protect what little image she had left, and to protect Mary — while Mr. Harvey paraded around making false allegations against both Ms. Berry and Mary,” she continued. […] She also is requesting $5 million and an apology.

Then Steve Harvey responded…

Harvey Took Legal Action: ‘Enough is enough’

Steve Harvey

In April 2018, it went largely unnoticed by many, that Steve clapped back at Mrs. Rerun and her $5 million lawsuit, in court docs. And it doesn’t look like he had any plans on paying Essie one red cent of what she was asking for at that time:

Via RadarOnlne: In Los Angeles Superior Court documents filed April 9, 2018…Harvey challenges the claims made by…Fred Rerun Berry’s widow, Essie. Harvey seeks to throwout Berry’s lawsuit against him “on the grounds that the complaint fails to state facts sufficient to constitute a cause of action against Mr. Harvey.”

In the notice of demurrer, Harvey’s team alleges Berry is just an “agent” of Harvey’s ex, Mary Vaughn, and was enlisted to tarnish his reputation. “Thirteen years ago a Texas court entered a divorce decree between Mary Vaughn and Broderick (Steve) Harvey. Unwilling to move on with her life, Ms. Vaughn has engaged in prolonged [pattern] of harassment and vexatious litigation against Mr. Harvey that has resulted in four separate injunction orders and a judicial finding of contempt against her for violating court orders on at least twenty separate occasions. […] “Undeterred, and unrepentant, Ms. Vaughn has enlisted her acknowledged agent, Plaintiff Essie Berry, to continue her quixotic campaign to tarnish Mr. Harvey’s reputation and re-litigate the divorce case. … [Essie Berry’s] “rambling and incoherent pleading is woefully deficient… Enough is enough,” Harvey’s legal team argues.

Harvey’s official court hearing – to dispute Rerun’s widow, Essie Berry’s, claims – was reportedly on June 7, 2018. Then came Mrs. Rerun’s restraining order…

Rerun’s Widow Granted Restraining Order In 2020

Essie Berry, widow of actor, Fred “Rerun” Berry

In 2020, Black News reported that Essie Berry filed for a restraining order against Steve Harvey:

On August 18, 2020…Essie was finally granted a restraining order from Judge Thomas S. Garza of the Superior Court of San Bernardino County in California. She says that for the last three years, Steve Harvey and his constituents have been using their resources as a vehicle for threatening phone calls, vulgar language, cyberbullying, text messages, emails, and countless other harassment tactics to “destroy her soul.”

She also claims that Steve Harvey has invaded her privacy by placing pictures of her home on the Internet.

Essie is happy about the restraining order but says that she won’t fully feel that justice has been served until she has received an official police report. The local police department, however, seems to be taking the side of Steve Harvey.

She comments, “Steve Harvey is a dangerous and ruthless man that hides behind his riches and fame. There is a dark side that resides within his soul. He is a manipulator, liar, and intimidator that threatens, cheats, bullies, and harasses Black women that he feels has no power.”

On a side note…pretty sure that back in the day when Steve was watching “What’s Happening” on TV, he probably never imagined in a million years that he’d be legally battling “Rerun’s” wife.

It’s been nearly eighteen years since the beloved Fred “Rerun” Berry sadly took his last breathe, but his impact was so strong, that he’s still a very relevant topic among us Old Schoolers. You’d think that by now, his fans probably know everything there is to know about Rerun, but nope, we’re still finding out a few bits of interesting info about the brotha’s life. We were pretty surprised when we found out which career path Rerun chose after his “What’s Happening” stint and heavy drug/alcohol addiction he oftentimes talked about in interviews. THIS might surprise y’all…

RERUN CHOSE A PATH MANY MAY LEAST EXPECT..

Rerun became a preacher! Who knew?!! According to LA Times:

[Fred Rerun] Berry was an unpaid associate minister and evangelist at the Little Shiloh Church on the outskirts of Huntsville, Ala., where he had moved from Los Angeles a year and a half earlier.

“I’d been going to churches for the past 12 years, to all kinds of services, but when I walked in here [in his church], I felt the power of God,” [Berry] told the Los Angeles Sentinel. “I didn’t want to leave.”

RERUN ALSO GAVE DETAILS ABOUT HIS DRUG/ALCOHOL ADDICTION AND HIS RECOVERY>>>

RERUN PUBLICLY SHARED HIS STRUGGLES WITH DRUGS & ALCOHOL

Fred “Rerun” Berry (screen-grab)

In that same LA Times article, Rerun explained how he got caught up into a life of drugs and alcohol:

“I was a millionaire by the time I was 29,” he told People magazine in 1996, “but then the stress of success got to me. The fat jokes got to me. And I got heavily into drugs and alcohol.”

Berry said in another 1996 interview that he had been “experimenting with drugs and alcohol” since he was a teenager, but as he became more successful, he could afford more drugs.

He was, he told the Cincinnati Call and Post, “addicted to drugs and alcohol for 10 years and probably spent a million dollars partying, and tried to commit suicide three times. I just got tired of being tired and decided to rededicate my life to the Lord in 1984. That’s when I also got delivered from the drugs and alcohol.”

Rerun passed away from complications due to a stroke in 2003, at the young age of 52. He was survived by his three children and his wife. The impact he left on us will never die though and we thank Fred Rerun Berry for giving us memories.

It’s been nearly 18 years since the beloved Fred “Rerun” Berry sadly took passed away in October 2003. But his impact was so strong, that he’s still a very relevant topic among us Old Schoolers.

RERUN CHOSE A PATH MANY MAY LEAST EXPECT…

Embed from Getty Images

Rerun became a preacher! Who knew?!! According to LA Times:

[Fred Rerun] Berry was an unpaid associate minister and evangelist at the Little Shiloh Church on the outskirts of Huntsville, Ala., where he had moved from Los Angeles a year and a half earlier.

“I’d been going to churches for the past 12 years, to all kinds of services, but when I walked in here [in his church], I felt the power of God,” [Berry] told the Los Angeles Sentinel. “I didn’t want to leave.”

RERUN PUBLICLY SHARED HIS STRUGGLES WITH DRUGS & ALCOHOL

Rerun passed away from complications due to a stroke on October 23, 2003; at the young age of 52. He was survived by his three children and his wife. The impact he left on us will never die though and we thank Fred Rerun Berry for giving us memories.

The Tension That Led To Anger Up Until Rerun’s Death

The 1976 TV show was an unexpected hit.
It’s been 15 years since the beloved Fred “Rerun” Berry sadly took his last breathe, but his impact was so strong, that he’s still a very relevant topic among us Old Schoolers.

It’s been 15 years since legendary “What’s Happening” actor, Fred “Rerun” Berry, sadly passed away in 2003, yet in 2018, his name is still making headlines, by way of his widow, Essie Berry. Rerun’s widow is embroiled in a heated legal battle with comedian/host, Steve Harvey, and now Steve has responded to her claims against him.

“What’s Happening” actor, Fred Rerun Berry (Photo by ABC Photo Archives/ABC via Getty Images)

Rerun’s Widow’s $5Million Claims Against Steve Harvey

As we previously reported, in March 2018, Essie Berry filed a $5 million lawsuit against Steve Harvey, accusing him “stalking,” harassment, and ‘murder of her emotional state of mind.’

In the lawsuit, Essie says in 2013 she was approached to do a reality TV show titled, “Widow, Wives, and Ex Celebrity Wives,” and she asked Steve Harvey’s ex-wife, Mary Vaughn, to join the show. Essie claims when Steve caught wind of her offer to his ex-wife, he proceeded to enforce the sealed gag order that legally prohibits Mary Vaughn from discussing Harvey in public. Mrs. Rerun also claims that she had no clue there was a sealed gag order in place at that time, but claims Steve then “defamed” her, by allegedly accusing her of being an “extortionist” and “co-conspirator.”

[…] She also is requesting $5 million and an apology.

Now Steve has responded…

Harvey Takes Legal Action: “Enough is enough”

Steve Harvey (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images)

In April 2018, it went largely unnoticed by many, that Steve clapped back at Mrs. Rerun and her $5 million lawsuit, in court docs. And it doesn’t look like he has any plans on paying Essie one red cent of what she’s asking for:

Harvey’s official court hearing, to dispute Essie Berry’s claims, will go down on June 7, 2018.

Pretty sure that back in the day, when Steve was watching “What’s Happening,” he probably never imagined in a million years that he’d be battling “Rerun’s” wife. Anywho…we’ll keep y’all posted on this one.
