Fresh Prince of Bel-Air actress, Tatyana Ali, dated a popular actor who was mostly known for his TV and film roles throughout the ’90s. Her ex was considered a teen sensation among the pop culture crowd and he and Tatyana were extremely in love during the height of both of their careers. Sadly, this actor actually took his life.

His name is Jonathan Brandis. You may recognize his face from several roles. He was a highly sought after actor who starred in the ’90s film Ladybug, he was the star of the ’90s NBC series seaQuest DSV and he made many guest appearances on shows like Who’s The Boss, Full House, One Life To Live, Murder She Wrote, L.A. Law, The Wonder Years, and more.

Jonathan Brandis ultimately died from injuries he suffered from hanging himself in the hallway of his apartment on November 12, 2003. Tatyana and Jonathan began dating at the height of Jonathan’s career in the mid ’90s and they were deeply in love for three years. They were no longer dating at the time of his 2003 suicide, but they were still friends.

Tatyana was extremely saddened about his death, which was really evident in his EOnline special, Broken Dreams, when she spoke emotionally about his suicide. She also hinted that his dwindling career was what caused him to go over the edge when she stated: “When you’ve been on covers of magazines for years, when that stops happening, what’s your identity?”

Johnathon’s friends also echoed that same sentiment, as reported by sitcomsonline:

‘Brandis died from injuries he suffered after hanging himself the previous day. According to his mother, he went out to dinner with friends, then they went back to his apartment. His friends reported that he seemed to be agitated and pacing around quite a bit. He left the room, and approximately 15 minutes later, one of his friends went looking for him and found him hanging by a nylon rope in the second floor hallway of his building. His friends cut him down and called paramedics. Despite all efforts to revive him, he was later pronounced dead.

The Los Angeles Police Department released a statement regarding his death:

Brandis apparently did not leave a note of any kind. He had no known personal problems, except for the fact that he was usually quite hard on himself. According to his mother, he had no prior suicide attempts, drank socially and had quit smoking two years prior. In a People Magazine article, friends were quoted as saying he was lonely and depressed about his lagging career. One friend admitted that Brandis drank heavily, and had even mentioned that he might kill himself. He was also said to be upset when his appearance in Hart’s War, a role he hoped would be his comeback, was cut from the film.’

It’s probably not be a bad idea for childhood actors to go through a required ongoing life coaching program that will help them to develop and be psychologically/emotionally healthy individuals. Matter of fact, that’ll be great for them to undergo during the height of their fame; as well as after after the lights and elated screams from tween fans fade out. Tatyana seems to have dodged that bullet, but many stars like the Diff’rent Strokes kids- Todd Bridges, Gary Coleman, Dana Plato- and so many others weren’t as fortunate.

We all remember “Hillary Banks” right? She was the spoiled rich kid on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air who cared more about her toenail polish color than her actually mental capacity. Thankfully actress, Karyn Parsons, is absolutely nothing like her ’90s character, Hillary, a fact that we’re pretty sure her husband, Alexandre Rockwell, and their two kids appreciate as well.

Speaking of their kids, they are doing some impressive things in the entertainment world. But first let us feel you in on their parents…

After Fresh Prince, Karyn pretty much shunned the spotlight and fame. It was like trying spot a needle in a haystack if you’d planned on spotting her on anyone’s red carpet. She began focusing on her family after marrying Rockwell in 2003 and giving birth to daughter, Lana, and son, Nico. She also launched her Sweet Blackberry Foundation, which her website states that their “mission at Sweet Blackberry is to bring little known stories of African American achievement to children everywhere.”

Her full-time job is being a mother to her kids though. Her husband, Alexandre Rockwell, is a film director and combined with Karyn’s acting expertise, it’s only natural that their babies are now aspiring to follow in their footsteps.

Lana’s now an 18-year-old actress, who –along with her brother, Nico– starred in the 2013 film their Dad directed and also co-starred in, titled Little Feet. Additionally, Lana’s starred in films, Pete Small Is Dead in 2010; and in That is Circling All Round the Sun in 2016.

By February 2020, Lana, her Dad, and her cast-mates were earning a Berlin Festival Award for their work in the film, “Sweet Thing.”

Karyn Parsons was a restaurant hostess at the exact same time she was “Hilary Banks!” Could you imagine going to the restaurant where she was working at the height of her career, and having “Hilary” escort you to your table?!! Crazy right? She’s smart though, because here’s what she explained about why she did that:

Before she got her break on that hit ’90s sitcom, Parsons was living in Hollywood — working as a restaurant hostess, taking acting classes and going on lots of auditions. When she first got the audition for The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, she wasn’t sold on the show’s concept. “I remember my first reactions being, ‘Oh, God, it’s a sitcom with a rapper? Like, what’s that?’ ” she recalls.

She says the Hilary character was originally written as a polished, cool model. “My first reaction to it was, ‘Oh, well, this is ridiculous, I’m not gonna get this, I’m not a model type. This is silly,’ ” Parsons says. Parsons says she decided to make the character her own. “I did what I could do, which was, I kind of turned in her into a little bit of a real brat,” she says. “It was fun to play that girl. It was fun to just be so self-absorbed that you just say ridiculous things.”

Parsons got the part, but she still went back to her hostessing job. “I didn’t know what was gonna happen with that show,” she says.

As you can see, Karyn Parsons is obviously way smarter than her character, “Hilary Banks.” She made sure not to throw all of her eggs in one basket. Some people just go all in and have no plan B, while others choose to play it safe. Karyn chose the latter.

Nowadays she spends time raising her kids with her husband, director Alexandre Rockwell, whom she married in 2003. Together they have a daughter, Lana (born March 2003), and a son, Nico (born May 2007).

Karyn is also focused on her great project called Sweet Blackberry, in which she’s producing a line of animated films about unsung black heroes. The first in the series is about Henry “Box” Brown, a slave who mailed himself to freedom.

ILOSM family we have all made mistakes in life and hopefully have grown wiser as a result. Sometimes, certain mistakes still make us look in the mirror and say ‘I was a damn FOOL for doing that!’ Today that’s the case for 80s/90s hip hop duo, Kid N’ Play (Chris “Kid” Reid and Christopher “Play” Martin) and the decision they made back in the day, which Reid now says was the one of the dumbest career moves of their lives.

Emotions Got The Best Of ‘Em

In an interview with HipHopDX, Chris “Kid” Reid revealed the decision he and his rap partner, Play should have never made. They turned down the opportunity NBC offered them to do what ultimately became “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” That was before the network offered t to Will “Fresh Prince” Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff. There is also an ironic twist that later involved Smith and Jazzy Jeff as well.

Chris “Kid”: “What went down at the time was that we got the cartoon series first with NBC — first rappers to ever have a cartoon. … We also had a sitcom deal with NBC at the same time, and we were developing that. This was before [The Fresh Prince of Bel Air] was on the air. So we were heading down that road, developing it with producers, about to hire people, this, that and the third, and then NBC came at us and said, ‘We still want to do the sitcom,’ and they also said, ‘but we want to cancel the cartoon series.’ […] They were phasing out cartoons, period. Well, we were so disappointed by that because we’re OGs, we came up on cartoons. So for us becoming cartoons was a big deal. And we were really upset that they were talking about canceling the cartoon. So we told them, and this is probably one of the dumber things we ever did, ‘We don’t want to do no night show with you. We don’t want to do no sitcom. If you cancel that cartoon, then you cancel us, we’ll go elsewhere.’ (laughs) So that slot for that show ended being the same slot for The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. That’s how that goes. They moved on, and they put Will in that spot. We made a mistake and took it too personal.”

DJ Jazzy Jeff Reveals Ironic Plot Twist

Emotions also were the guiding force behind a career altering decision Will “Fresh Prince” Smith and DJ Jazzy Jeff made in the early 90s. Jazzy Jeff revealed they ironically were offered the lead roles in the House Party movies before Kid N’ Play were. Much like Kid N’Play were pissed off with NBC at that time, Jazzy Jeff revealed, in an interview, that he and Will were pissed with New Line Cinema, which ultimately led to them turning down that House Party offer. Gotta luv the irony of this one.

What had happened was that right around that time, New Line Cinema released the 4th installment of the classic 80’s film, Nightmare On Elm Street. Fresh Prince & DJ Jazzy Jeff decided to capitalize off of it, without getting an approval. They released their 1988 hit, “Nightmare On My Street,” which heavily sampled “Freddy Krueger’s” voice. New Line was like ‘Aw HELL naw!’ and hit the duo with a lawsuit for copyright infringement. Smith and Jazzy then were offered two options by New Line: either pay their settlement out of pocket, or film two movies for them and have their settlements be deducted from their pay. One of the films was House Party, which told the story of a rapper and a DJ.

Feeling like they were being ‘punked,’ by the ‘work-your-debt-off 2-movie deal,’ they actually opted to pay their settlements outta pocket instead, passing on what later became one of the biggest 90s cult classic films. See what Jazzy revealed about this below:

DJ Jazzy Jeff: “What sucks about that was my reasons for not taking it [the lead role in House Party] didn’t have anything to do with the movie. It was more of the legal part that we were going through with New Line Cinemas. I don’t think we ever looked at it like, ‘Yo, it would be kind of dope if we did this.’ I think it was kind of like we had the ability to say no, so let’s just say no. […] We almost felt like they [New Line] were mad at us and this was our punishment. We never got from New Line Cinemas like, ‘You know what, quiet as kept, we really think you guys are really talented. … ‘ We kind of got, if your mom says listen, do you want a beating or do you wanna take sitting in your room tonight, you’re gonna take sitting in your room.”

Kid N Play ultimately landed the role after Smith and Jazzy turned it down, which wasn’t a bad look at all. According to TheChive, ‘House Party part 1 grossed $26,386,000 from a $2.5million budget. Part 2 made almost $20million with $19.1million for part 3.’

Overall, it seems that the universe put the right rap duos in the proper places that were meant for them at that time. I couldn’t imagine Fresh Prince of Bel Air, nor House Party starring anyone else.

Tatyana’s Breastfeeding Pic Sends Social Media Into Frenzy

In case y’all haven’t heard, Tatyana and her husband, Vaughn Rasberry, welcomed their son, Edward Aszard Rasberry, into this world nearly two years ago on September 16, 2016. What they probably never expected is that two years later, he’d be a part of the controversy surrounding the beauty of motherhood. You see, a few weeks ago, Tatyana posted a photo of herself breastfeeding little Edward (who was 1 year and 11 mos. old at the time) and stirred up a ruckus on her Instagram timeline.

In her photo caption, she made her purpose for posting the pic very clear- to “normalize breastfeeding.” Peep what she wrote below…

The whole point is to encourage women, black women, to breastfeed and to normalize it so more people feel comfortable doing it. That’s what breasts are for. Breastfeeding passes antibodies to your baby and gives them disease protection since they don’t even have an immune system in infancy. That’s the importance of women, especially black women, seeing this.

The debate about public breastfeeding has been a long one that is pretty much divided down the middle. Not sure if there will ever be a common ground reached on this controversial topic. Nonetheless, we’re just happy Tatyana and her husband have a healthy bundle of joy.
