Ike & Tina Turner’s only biological child together, Ronnie Turner, tells the story of how his dad took it unbelievably hard when his mother left him in 1976, and how Ike NEVER got over it…up until the very day that he died.

After their bitter divorce, Ike and Tina had no contact in more than three decades even though their son, Ronnie Turner, was born. Ronnie said he saw a lot in his time as a child, while his parents were married. He said in an Ebony Magazine article:

“I know everything that has happened all through his life and through my parents’ divorce.” The musician and songwriter who learned to play the bass from his father added: “He [Ike] wasn’t happy and still working. I could just tell and feel it. He never acted like he got over the divorce….My father used to come to my house a lot. I never kept my phone book around. He used to ramble around and try to look for my mom’s phone number.”

Now, you know he’s talking about the days before we stored all our numbers in our mobile phones and that was not that long ago.

“A lot of people were trying to take my mom and do other projects with her,” Ronnie also added. “He was possessive. It caused friction. After a while my dad got introduced to drugs. To me, it was a setup…He was such a good, strong businessman that sometimes people will give you things to bring you down a little bit. Once he was brought down, he couldn’t pull away from it.”

Ike’s assistant and caretaker, Falina Rasool, added what she witnessed firsthand just how hardcore Ike’s presumed obsession with Tina was until his dying day.

“There was not a day that would go by that he didn’t watch videos with Tina. Two days before he died we were watching Tina. He could tell you everything that happened at that time, like the arguments before they got onstage. He could remember everything. Nothing altered his mind.”

Geesh! Didn’t know it was that deep for Ike.

We’ve all seen, or at least heard about the movie, “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” so we know about some of their history together, as well as the abuse Tina had to endure from Ike. But a lot of people don’t know about what Ike also went through before meeting Tina. Of course this doesn’t justify his actions by far, but it sure does explain a whole helluva lot about how he got that way. So here it is…

1. His dad was a minister who was beaten by a white mob and left for dead, because he looked at a Caucasian woman the ‘wrong way.’ Ike said he witnessed this trauma when he was only five years old. His father lived for three more years as an invalid in a tent in the family’s yard, before succumbing to his injuries.

2. Little Ike was then introduced to sex, at age of six, by a middle-aged lady named ‘Miss Boozie.’ Walking past her house to school, she would invite him to help feed her chickens and then take him to bed. This continued for some years. Ike claimed not to be traumatized by this, commenting that “in those days they didn’t call it abuse, they called it fun”. He was then later raped by two other women before he was twelve.

3. If you think that’s horrible and it was, his mother then married another man. This guy, the new stepfather was a violent alcoholic and he and his mother often argued and fought. After one of those fights Ike, now a little older, knocked out his stepfather with a piece of wood. He then ran away to Memphis, where he lived rough for a few days before returning to his mother. He reconciled with his stepfather years later, buying a house for him in the 1950s around the time Turner’s mother died. but there’s no doubt the dude had a rough upbringing.

Check this out from Ronnie Turner as he explains something deep about his Dad’s abuse on women:

“Part of inflicting pain on women brought out of the pain that was inflicted on him as a child. Had he not gone through that, he probably would have been a better man when it came to relationships and women.”

“That’s probably why every relationship I was in was surrounded by sex. Sex was power to me.”

Ike Turner was more complex than what we saw in the movie and because he had his most success with Tina, of course he would be devastated when she left. But then who could blame her for leaving? The things she went through in that relationship were extremely toxic.

It is rumored that Ike was married somewhere between 8 to 14 times and has several more children! This is a really tough situation because Ike was clearly a broken child who’s innocence was stripped away from him beyond his control and in turn, he became a broken man who needed to get severe help before attempting to be in any type of serious relationship with any woman. The cycle of life is a beast, if we never take the pain-bearing steps it takes to repair ourselves as people from the inside out.

The late Ike Turner stated quite often that he was married a whopping thirteen times in his 76 years of life. Ike was always quite a character and was very candid about his struggles with addiction, sexual abuse as a child, and his abusive actions toward some women in his life. We all know Tina Turner’s story and now Ike’s last wife/his background singer, Audrey Madison Turner, has told her story in her memoir, “Love Had Everything to Do with It.” According to Audrey, one of the things she wants people to understand the most when reading her book, is the reason WHY Ike used to beat her. This should be interesting. See what Audrey explained below.

IKE’S WIFE, AUDREY, GIVES DETAILS ABOUT HIS ABUSE & WHY HE DID IT

Audrey Turner did an interview with Afro and stated that her husband, Ike, used to beat her because he had bipolar disorder, which caused severe mood swings and his cocaine use only exaggerated the problem. He didn’t find out he was bipolar until much later in life, after Audrey (whom Ike began dating in the early 2000’s) convinced him to go to a psychiatrist. Audrey said:

“I decided to write [the book] because it was like a cleansing and it released all of the trauma. Also, I wanted the general public to have a better outlook and perspective on where Ike was mentally and emotionally, because so often, as a nation, we turn on people who have mental health issues and define them by their behaviors rather than their condition. It is easy to create monsters in people’s imaginations, but when you speak of this same person as generous, good-hearted, and kind, or as troubled, people realize that they are similar or have family members whose behavior is ‘that way.’

Ike suppressed a lot and between the chemical imbalances and the cocaine, paranoia set [in and] took over his life.”

AUDREY TURNER: ‘IKE’S ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR WAS JUST LIKE MY MOM’S’

Audrey was able to recognize, and live with, Ike’s beatings because she said that her mom was the same way, but was never officially diagnosed:

“My mother would fly into a rage and hit me, and then come back a little while later, and hug me, and call me her pretty little girl… and I began seeing that in Ike. One minute we’re talking and the next he’s slapped me, and then just as quickly, he was apologizing and we are both making excuses for why he did it,” Turner said. “I saw the connection and convinced him to get a professional diagnosis,” says Audrey.- via Afro

AUDREY TURNER BATTLED WITH IKE’S LOVED ONES OVER STRANGE WILL

After Ike Turner passed away in 2007, Audrey; Ike’s friend, attorney James Clayton; and Ike’s kids battled it out in court over the strange wills Ike supposedly left behind. Audrey presented a handwritten will she said Ike wrote two months before his death, which included her as a beneficiary. Clayton presented a handwritten will he said Ike wrote in 2001, which excluded Audrey and left Ike’s estate in the control of Clayton and one of Ike’s kids. Ike’s kids also argued that because Ike left no valid will, their dad’s estate should automatically go to them. We don’t know who won, but the journey to get there sure was interesting, to say the least.

Mariah Carey’s ex-husband/actor, Nick Cannon, does not think it’s fair to the late Ike Turner, that he died “as a villain” in the eyes of many fans. That is the sentiment the “Wild N’ Out” host revealed in a prior interview with MadameNoire.

Ike Turner died in 2007 at 76, and while it’s true he was a helluva musician, it’s also true that his abusive reputation far outweighed his musical success. Most of us became aware of that fact, after Ike’s ex-wife/former bandmate, Tina Turner, released her biopic, “What’s Love Got To Do With It.”

Why Cannon Thinks Ike’s Getting Bad Wrap

Nick Cannon revealed why he thinks Ike’s musical impact should get more shine:

“That man passed away being a villain,” Cannon stated in his MN interview. “We have, like, villainized this dude. We don’t even give him his credit of being one of the pioneers of rock ‘n roll, for discovering the great Tina Turner. All we do is think he’s just this womanizing, just horrible villain that he was portrayed in the movie and I was just like, ‘Dang, Ike never got to tell his side of the story.’ And I’ve felt like that many times and in several relationships.”

Nick then said, that sometimes the “media be trying to ‘Ike Turner you’ and, yo, before I die, y’all not ‘gon villainize me. I’mma tell my story, dammit. I’mma turn up in this joint!”

At the time of Ann and Ike’s affair, he was married to Tina Turner, thus making Mia Turner the ‘lovechild. Ironically, Tina proved to be a bigger woman then most, because she was very hands on with helping to raise her husband’s affair baby, Mia. According to Mia Turner, her ‘second mom, Tina, spread one massive lie about her late dad, Ike, in her biopic, What’s Love Got To Do With It. The infamous rape scene, where Ike violently rapes Tina Turner in their home studio supposedly never happened, claims Mia and she wants to clear her Dad’s name once and for all…and she says Tina’s sister stands with her:

Mia Turner- “That rape did not happen.” … Obviously I wasn’t there that night…but after I saw the movie I called Tina’s sister, Aillene, and said, ‘What in the world?’ …She then called Tina and confirmed to me that it never happened.”

Daughter Claims Tina Tricked Ike Into Signing Off On Violent Biopic..

Mia Turner: “A high percentage of Tina’s account has been accurate. When she signed off on the movie it was the way she wanted it, but it was edited heavily afterwards. … We find out later it was tweaked. It was made Hollywood, so there’s quite a few scenes, primarily the rape scene. It didn’t happen. In Hollywood, sex sells, whether it’s good, bad or indifferent.”

“When the movie came out, it took me 10 times to get through it. I couldn’t do it. I asked my dad, ‘How could you allow mom [Tina] to portray you like this?’ He said, ‘I signed off, trusting that Anna Mae would portray me correctly, not lying or tweaking anything. The real story. I got paid $50,000 that I wouldn’t say anything afterwards.'”

In 2018, when Tina Turner released her autobiographical book, “My Love Story (2018),” the music icon has remained steadfast that her ex-husband, Ike, beat and raped her throughout their marriage:

Ike Refuted Tina’s Claims Prior To Passing: ‘I punched her, but never beat her’…
Prior to his passing, Ike Turner wrote an autobiography, titled “Takin’ Back My Name (1999),” refuting several of Tina’s claims…although his rebuttals were a tad delusional:

Tina said, ‘Look at this diamond Ike gave me,’ as she pulled the ring from her purse and started putting it on her finger. It was dazzling. When Ike came back, he took one look at the ring on Tina’s hand and without saying a word; he punched her in the face with a closed fist. Then he grabbed her hand and bent it back, and yanked off the ring, almost breaking her finger in the process. Her face swelled up right in front of me. This isn’t necessarily surprising, given the violent history of Ike and Tina’s relationship, but it’s still sad to say the least.

It’s evident that Ike had severe issues with women, issues that stem back all the way to his childhood. What he and Tina went through is just another example that it’s almost impossible to know how to genuinely love someone, if we are not healed from the type of conditional love, or lack thereof, that we may have experienced in our childhood. Every human needs unconditional love. However, broken children often mature into broken adults if they don’t get the help they need/deserve in order to heal the wounds and heartaches that were passed onto them without their permission.

Hopefully, Ike Turner and Tina Turner were both eventually able to fully heal from their wounds and toxic relationship. From the looks of it, Tina has…but not quite sure if the late Ike Turner was ever fortunate enough to do so.

Chaka Khan revealed in her book, “Through The Fire,” that Ike Turner once tried to seriously sway her into taking an offer that I’m sure we’re all happy she declined. Here’s what Chaka said:

“He [Ike] flew us [Rufus ft. Chaka Khan) to L.A. and put us up at the Hollywood’s ‘Jet Motel,’ and said he wanted us to record in his studio. As it turned out, what Ike really wanted was for me to become an Ikette. I was like ‘HELL NO!’ Ike had his brilliance but he was insane back then.”

Chaka is a wise woman and that “hell no” response was hilarious…and seemingly very appropriate. We respect Mr. Turner for all that he contributed to soul music, he was one talented dude. However, after seeing the “What’s Love Got To Do With It” movie back in the day, we ALL know that situation probably would have been a disaster for Chaka.

On the flip side, Chaka ain’t no joke either! Remember our story on the time Chaka recalled shooting multiple times at her then-husband, while she was 8 months pregnant, after he allegedly hit her? Guess he learned his lesson that day. So, one can see how Chaka becoming an ‘Ikette’ would have been a masterpiece of DESTRUCTION just waiting to happen.
