Jasmine revealed that despite signing a six-year contract, she wanted to quit, but producers wouldn’t allow it. However, the most shocking revelation came when Guy exposed how the producers mistreated Lisa Bonet a.k.a. “Denise Huxtable” on the show.

During the interview, Jasmine mentioned how she didn’t like the way Lisa was treated on set, saying:

“That first season, I’m telling you, it was whack, and I didn’t like the way they were treating Lisa Bonet. You disrespect her in front of an audience, in front of me, you disrespecting me too.” According to Guy, higher-ups would often belittle and disrespect Bonet, talking down to her and pressuring her to “just do it, just say it.”

Jasmine, who hailed from New York, revealed that she didn’t shy away from standing up for Lisa, even though Lisa had to hire security on set. Recounting the incidents, Guy stated:

“That’s a sweet girl because you’re not getting up on me like that. And you know, we’ve dealt with bitches. We’re from New York, as far as choreographers and directors and whatnot. I was like ‘oh no, you not treating her like that.'”

It was clear that Guy had a deep sense of loyalty and camaraderie with her co-star. But both Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison disagreed that the mistreatment was the main reason behind Bonet’s departure from the show. Instead, they believed that Bonet’s pregnancy at the time likely played a significant role in her exit. Hardison expressed his disappointment, saying:

“[They] didn’t want a Black girl pregnant in college. I thought it would’ve been a great tool and something to inspire because it was all inspiring, so why not?”

Apart from the mistreatment of Bonet, Jasmine Guy also voiced her frustrations about the network’s decision to change the show’s time slot. She questioned why A Different World was pitted against another beloved Black sitcom, “Martin,” and expressed her displeasure with the network’s lack of support.

Ever since Lisa Bonet, known for her roles in iconic TV shows like “The Cosby Show” and “It’s A Diff’rent World,” filed for divorce, fans have been patiently awaiting the news about the settlement. Well, the wait is over! Lisa Bonet and her actor-husband, Jason Momoa, have already reached an agreement just a day after the divorce was filed.

According to new court documents, both Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa have agreed to joint legal and physical custody of their kids. The former couple will co-parent their 16-year-old daughter, Lola, and 15-year-old son, Nokoa-Wolf. This decision shows their commitment to putting their children’s well-being first.

Furthermore, the court documents reveal that Bonet and Momoa have also waived the right to seek spousal support from each other. This demonstrates their desire to move forward in an amicable manner, free from any financial disputes and exes-drama:

“Based upon the division of assets and income as agreed by the parties in the [settlement], the parties shall share the living expenses of the minor children, and neither party shall pay child support to the other,” the documents state. “If the minor children, or either of them, are traveling or vacationing with one of the parties, that party shall be responsible for the children’s expenses for such trips.”

It’s refreshing to see how swiftly Lisa and Jason have resolved their differences. Their willingness to ensure the best for their children and avoid prolonged legal battles deserves a handclap and old school fist bump.

The divorce between Lisa Bonet and Jason Momoa came as a surprise to many, as the couple had publicly announced their split back in 2022. In their statement at the time, they emphasized their mutual respect and the love they had for each other, even as their romantic relationship changed.

Now, with this quick settlement, Lisa and Jason can officially go their separate ways, both emotionally and legally. They have both been officially single as of, January 9, 2023. It’s a fresh start for both of them, filled with new possibilities and opportunities.

Tempestt Bledsoe a.k.a. “Vanessa Huxtable” from The Cosby Show and Darryl M. Bell — best known for his portrayal of “Ron Johnson, Jr.” on A Different World; and also in Spike Lee’s School Daze, as “Big Brother X-Ray Vision” — have an interesting decades-long relationship and they explained why.

By now, many fans know the famed 90s actors, who began dating in 1993 –five years after Tempestt made a guest appearance on A Different World— have been together for decades. And although they seem like the traditional couple who follows the traditional social norm, believe it or not, they still aren’t married. Some people have no idea the two have been happily unmarried for more almost 30 years — 29 years to be exact. So, how is such a seemingly unbelievable feat possible? Well, there’s a pretty interesting reason for their decision.

DARRYL EXPLAINS WHAT’S TAKING SO LONG TO JUMP THE BROOM

Although they’ve lived together for years, Darryl said, in a prior V-103 interview, that he’s still not ready to make that commitment and that “If it ain’t broke”… well, you know the rest.  And a few years ago, when Tempestt and Darryl appeared on Fox’s reality series, Househusbands of Hollywood, it was clear that not only was Darryl comfortable with being happily unmarried to Tempestt, when he stated that he wanted to be a “Stedman” to her “Oprah”…but that he was cool with Tempestt being the breadwinner, while he took care of things at home. Darryl does have an hilarious sense of humor though, so we’re not sure if he was joking about that ‘Stedman’ statement, or not.

During a previous interview with Entertainment Tonight, Darryl also explained why their unconventional, live-in relationship works:

“I think it is that it is really important that we are able to make each other laugh. Have you noticed that some of the ugliest stand-up comedians have some of the cutest girlfriends? If you can make a woman laugh, you will find your way into her heart,” he said. “I believe in the institution, too. I always say you never know what is going to happen 20 minutes from now, but, at the moment, we are happy and we have been happy, so we will see what the future brings.”

Although fans would probably like to see the typical storybook plot for Tempestt and Darryl, she’s not giving away any details, reports People. She also explained why. “I wouldn’t say never,” says Bledsoe coyly, “but we feel great about the way things are.” Either way, she’s happy. “This is a tough business for anyone, especially if you start out young,” she says of Hollywood. “I feel really lucky about the way things have turned out.”

We’ll always love us some Jasmine Guy for for crackin’ us up back in the day with her stuck up “Different World” character, “Whitley.” However, let Jasmine tell it…for her, everything wasn’t always so peachy when it came to being “Whitley.” Although she is very grateful for having had the opportunity to make the late ’80s/early ’90s culture entertaining and memorable for us all, to the surprise of many, Jasmine Guy, began to despise this one thing about her character and it drove her to no end.

WHY SHE DISLIKED HER “WHITLEY” CHARACTER AFTER A WHILE

Jasmine Guy absolutely hated that people thought she was like “Whitley” in real life. For those who don’t know, Jasmine Guy is the FARTHEST thing from “Whitley” that a person could possibly be!

In real life, there’s nothing pampered, nor prissy about homegirl. Truth be told, Jasmine is classy, but she’s got some hood in her too. Her real personality is more of a stern, but friendly woman who does not take any mess from anybody. Jasmine was raised in a Black Atlanta neighborhood by a Black preacher dad and a White teacher mom. However, because she played the “Whitley” character so well, she says that she began to resent her role because the public actually started to believe she was like “Whitley.” But she actually says she couldn’t stand people like “Whitley”:

Via People Magazine: “I would never talk the way Whitley talks,” says [Jasmine]Guy. “In fact I don’t know why she hasn’t gotten slapped a few times. Believe me, if I knew someone like Whitley, we wouldn’t be going to the movies together.”

Jasmine then began to purposely take on other work that were in direct contrast to her “Whitley” character. So when she landed the role of “Dominique Larue” — the seductive girlfriend of a gangster in the film, “Harlem Nights” — she was ecstatic. She also released an R&B album in 1990…again, a very non-“Whitley” move.

But still, even after “Different World” was over in 1993, Jasmine despised that most people were continuing to approach her in public and assuming that she was much like “Whitley.” After a while, she just learned to live with it and embrace the reality for what it is.

BEING LIGHT SKIN CAUSED GUY TREMENDOUS HEARTACHE AS A KID

“I remember getting into several fights in grade school because black kids would think I thought I was pretty because I had light skin and long hair,” she says. “They said I always tried to talk properly. But I wasn’t trying to seem better. I just wanted to be me.”

“The [School Daze] role was difficult for me because it brought back ugly memories,” says Guy. “Again I had to face the reality of how the world sometimes views people only on outward appearances. I don’t like being prejudged.”

Jasmine hasn’t changed all that much, she was a beautiful little girl and she’s still a beautiful woman.
Here’s something about Ms. Guy that many may not know- she is TOTALLY different from her character, ‘Whitley’ on Different World. She always speaks her mind, regardless of who doesn’t like it and that’s something that we’ve always respected about her. Not too long ago, she had to put an interviewer in check when he asked her to talk about the Bill Cosby allegations.

She also gave a quick check session to another interviewer who assumed she’d be like her “Whitley” character- which is an assumption she absolutely cannot stand. She talks about the “Whitley” accent below…

By the way, in more recent years, Jasmine’s more recent roles were on BET’s drama series, The Quad, which also starred actress, Anika Rose. The show was about Black college life and Jasmine played the dean.

“Dwayne-Wayne” and “Whitley” also got back together decades later. Well, not literally…but Kadeem Hardison did join forces with Jasmine Guy on TV again. Kadeem starred in the the hit Disney Channel sitcom, KC Undercover, in 2015 and 2016. He played the father of ‘KC’ (played by singer/actress, Zendaya). Jasmine Guy made a guest appearance on the show as an enemy agent who had been in hiding for years.

Jasmine and Kadeem spoke with Oprah about what they didn’t necessarily like about being superstars back in the day…

When Debbie Allen took over Different World as the director, her stint with Lisa Bonet as a part of the cast didn’t last very long, but it wasn’t because of her doing, it was because of Bill Cosby’s decision, according to Debbie.

Here is what Debbie Allen said was the real reason behind Lisa leaving Different World below:

“When I first took over the show [It’s A Different World], one of the first things I did was meet with Lisa Bonet and she secreted to me that she was pregnant.

She had married Lenny Kravitz, and you know…I guess Bill had his feelings about that because he was possessive in a way. I mean they were his on-camera wife and children, but they still were his. I mean, the way he was with Phylicia [Rashad] (Debbie’s sister) too, I mean, that’s a whole ‘nother story.

So I said, ‘Well Lisa we have to go tell him … Honey, put some shoes on, don’t come up there with a bare foot…get your best dress, let’s comb your hair and let’s go up there to see him, let’s tell him together.’ So we got dressed, we went up there, and oooh…he [Bill Cosby] could see us coming! He saw us a mile away, he could see us coming (laughs). And he sat there and looked at us; and I said, ‘Well, we have some things that we want to tell you.’ He said, “What is it? Are you pregnant?” And then we were like, ‘Oh my God.’ Then he said well what is so different about it? He looked at me, he said, ‘You were pregnant, your sister was pregnant, and so now what?”

And I explained to him how I wanted to use it [the pregnancy] on the show because that would be a great thing. To see a girl who’s [this] upper class kid, having a baby, not married because she didn’t want to be married…and the girls could root for her. I was explaining all that we could do. Well, honey I was just blowing smoke and didn’t know it (laughs). He listened to it.

We started talking about stories and then immediately — maybe about two or three weeks later — he was like, ‘You know what Debbie? No. She’s pregnant, Denise Huxtable is not pregnant, Lisa Bonet is pregnant, not Denise. So no…no you can’t have it, no we’re not gonna do it, no.’

So he took her [Lisa Bonet] back, I was so mad at him, I wanted to take her, but I understand, he just wanted her back. So she left us [the It’s A Different World cast] to go back home [to the ‘Huxtable’ house], she ended up getting married on the show, and whatever else happened over there.

All of these years, we’ve been hearing rumors about Lisa Bonet’s ‘attitude’ causing tension between she and Bill Cosby, which may still may true as well. But it’s good to get a first-hand account from Debbie Allen, as to why Lisa actually disappeared from It’s A Different World, and ultimately from The Cosby Show.

Former It’s A Different World actor, Darryl M. Bell (who played “Dwayne Wayne’s” friend, “Ron Johnson”) has had his highs and lows in the entertainment biz’ and in his personal life. In fact, the situation that happened between him and his family, is proof of his personal drama. Darryl is in a great space now, but back in the day, he blew MILLIONS of his rich father’s money. Unfortunately, Darryl learned the hard way, that sometimes mixing money, business, and family is a recipe for disaster.

His Family Was Well-Off

In case ya’ll haven’t heard, Darryl comes from a well off family. Although the School Daze star became a famous actor, he wasn’t the only mega-success story in his family, his pops, the late Travers Bell Jr., did so first.

Travers wasn’t an actor by far, but he was a record breaking businessman. By 1971, Travers Bell Jr. became the first owner and founder of a Black-owned member firm of the New York Stock Exchange. With only $175K in capital, he had developed Daniels & Bell Inc., a securities firm on Wall Street, which by the time of his untimely passing in 1988, had grown to a net worth of nearly $15million. Travers was also a major shareholder in Freedom National Bank and Cocoline Chocolate Co. (the company that made chocolate chips for Nabisco).

Why Darryl M. Bell’s Fam’ Took Him To Court & HOW MUCH $ He Lost

As Darryl’s It’s A Different World stint was coming to an end in 1993, he was embarking on a new dynamic in his life- a 6 month court battle. After Darryl’s beloved father, Travers, passed away at the age of 46 from a heart attack, he left his multi-million dollar business to Darryl. However, after Darryl ended up losing most of his pop’s $14.9 million, due to inexperience, his dad’s widow and two of Darryl’s aunts (Travers’ sisters) took him to court:

[Travers] Bell had also been major shareholder in Freedom National Bank, which was taken over by federal authorities three years after he died. In addition, Cocoline Chocolate Co.,…filed a Chapter 11 bankruptcy petition [in 1992].

A Superior Court probate judge in Morris County, N.J., ruled…actor Darryl Bell wasted the $14 million estate left by his late father out of imprudence, rather than wrongdoing as charged in a suit…While Bell had no experience in the business, court records indicate he put his mother and sister on the payroll and amassed a huge debt on the corporate credit card. As assets and revenue plummeted at the firm, the widow of the late founder, Laura Bell, and two of his sisters, Joanne Walker and Karen Bell McClearin, filed suit charging the young actor mismanaged the established New York securities firm.’ -via Jet Magazine; May 1993

After it was all said and done, Darryl’s father’s business plummeted from a net worth of $14.9million to $1million. The business owed several debtors, including the IRS, which had a $2.3million stake in the estate at that time.

But That’s Not All, See What Else His Family Claimed

In their suit, the women [Darryl’s aunts and father’s widow] had charged [that Darryl M.] Bell had mismanaged the business and misappropriated monies. They also asked the court to name new executors of the will and asked that co-executors, Darryl and his grandfather, be held accountable for replacing $5 million they maintained had disappeared from the estate. In dismissing the case after a six-month trial, [Judge] Stanton attributed the firm’s hard times to Bell’s inexperience rather than malicious intent. […] [Judge] Stanton said, “This estate has turned out to be a disaster. It is all very regrettable.” -via Jet Magazine, 1993

He Credits Spike Lee For His Career

On a lighter side of things, Darryl had a successful acting career, which started while he was a Syracuse University college student and he said he owes it all to director, Spike Lee:

Darryl Bell- “I went to see ‘She’s Gotta Have It’…in New York City. There was a big line outside, and Spike was out front just signing autographs.” Bell says he told Spike to give him a part in his next movie if he wanted him to buy a $10 ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ T-shirt. They talked for a while, then Lee gave Bell his address and told him to send some photographs of himself. Soon after, he was auditioning for the role of ‘Big Brother X-Ray Vision’ in ‘School Daze.’ “After the audition, Spike said I’d definitely hear from him again. […] It’s because of Spike that I’m in this business. It’s because of Spike that I met people who helped me get on ‘A Different World,’ namely his casting director, Robi Reed.” -via The Chicago Tribune.

Okay old schoolers, this is NSFW, (not suitable for work), and we aren’t just saying that…we really mean it! On second thought…for some of you this is yesterday’s news, but the vast majority of our ILOSM family didn’t know that one of Bill Cosby’s programs, “A Different World,” turned out an actress of a different kind. Years later, she was still acting, but in a totally different capacity.

If you don’t remember the actress, Jonell Green — she played feisty teen, “Dashawn Curtis,” on A Different World” who always had something flip to say to “Whitley” and the other characters. In addition to appearing in “A Different World,” Green has also played a role in “Bebe’s Kids,” “Roc” and “Sister-Sister.”

She also once confessed that she knows Cosby would be unhappy with the career path she chose after mainstream acting.

“I do think Bill Cosby would be disappointed in me, because he is for a majority of Black people to get higher education and things like that, you know.”

Her Surprising Career After “A Different World”

Her quote came years before Bill Cosby was charged with multiple charges of sexual assault. You see, Jonell Green who played “Dashawn Curtis” is a very popular adult film star who now goes by the name, Aryana Starr.

So, while folks may have something to say about this former child actress and her career moves, the last one who should open their mouth on this here topic, is probably Mr. Cosby…no shade, just saying.

Remember “Kim Reese” on A Different World? Her real name is Charnele Brown. One interesting thing about her is that before we came to know her as the cute girl at “Hillman College,” she walked away from a very promising career that many parents would have given her the side-eye for stepping away from. Especially considering the fact that she’d gotten a shot at a then-unknown TV sitcom that didn’t yet involve a promising and consistent paycheck.

However, Charnele didn’t feel that way, and in 1987 when she got the call that the producers wanted to try her out for It’s A Different World, she’d instantly ended her career as a stock broker on Wall Street in New York City! That’s right…she packed her bags up, and headed to Los Angeles with the quickness!

During her time as a stock broker, Charnele Brown was also a struggling actress who was constantly looking for work and facing repeated rejection from casting calls because they would tell her that as a brown girl, her look wasn’t “in.” That is absolutely ridiculous, but Charnele never let the ignorance of the entertainment industry hamper her determination, nor her drive. So the day before Black Monday on Wall Street, she put it all on the line with the hope that her role on It’s A Different World would stick…and fortunately it did.

That last we heard…Charnele is now doing more work behind the scenes, writing several stage plays for the theatrical world in Houston, TX and she was also working on developing a sitcom to give mainstream media more positive African American representations on television. And she doesn’t bite her tongue when it comes to voicing her dislike for the shows she sees on television today. This is what she said about today’s entertainment climate:

Via Style Magazine – “Twenty years ago if someone would have told me we love to see black women on TV back biting and fighting, I would have laughed in their face. Now we have to bring back the wholesomeness in television. We can bring back dignity through reality TV,” [said Charnele Brown].  Charnele is a Christian who is objective enough to understand that acting and entertainment is simply a job. Actors must make the decision within themselves to go as far as they want. “I don’t like that people talk about Beyonce. She is a light and a woman of God. Anyone who judges her and can’t see the light within her doesn’t have the light within themselves.”

We understand where Charnele is coming from. Although I don’t knock reality shows, I do think it’s time to bring more balance to the TV screen and mainstream media overall…just as we desperately need more balance with today’s music. We wish Charnele Brown much success with her attempt to contribute to helping to bring about that change.
