When John David was promoting his film, The BlacKkKlansmen, in 2018 he caught the attention of many during a promo interview when he politely-yet-directly checked the NBC News interviewer.

Apparently, the interviewer gave Denzel props for influencing John David, but not Pauletta. John cut the interviewer off and it was apparent he wanted to make it clear that his Mother deserves far more props than his father, Denzel. His reaction caught the interviewer slightly off guard, but John did made some good points about the dynamic of the roles each of his parents played in his life. See what he said below:

“[She] was earning more money than he was before they got married. She was on Broadway working, she paid for the first date- she paid the bill, paid the cab ride. So uh, [she’s a] classically trained pianist, went to Julliard [School of Arts]. So…she’s a great artist in her own right,” stated John David in his NBC interview.

After the interview clip began circulating online, many wondered if there is some underlying tension between John and Denzel. Could or could not be, but John has discussed this same topic in interviews before.

As we previously reported, in his 2016 interview on “The Breakfast Club,” John made it clear he did NOT want to be compared to his Father, and is determined to carve his own space in Hollywood. He also made it clear yet again, that his Mom deserves most of the praise and not his Pops.

During that “TBC” interview, John was promoting the hit HBO series he stars in, “Ballers.” John introduced himself to the co-hosts as John David, which is only two thirds of his name. He conveniently left out his last name- Washington, with the hopes that he could set the tone for the interview to be solely focused on him and his work, and not the weight of carrying his Dad’s iconic last name.

John David Washington, a former NFL player-turned-actor, responded the same way in 2016 (he talks about his parents at the 4:30 mark of the video below).

TBC co-host Charlamagne: “You seem like you don’t like to tell people that [Denzel’s] your Pops.”

John David: “Absolutely not and like I said, football helped with that…I knew acting would be the subject where it was brought up, but that’s just what it is. And that’s why I talk about Pauletta Washington (his mother)because she in a lot of ways, in her own right, was more talented. […] That’s just what it is. […] My Mother was actually making more money than he was when they started. She was on Broadway, Julliard, classically trained pianist. On their first date, she paid for the date.”

NO DISRESPECT TO HIS DAD THOUGH…John also made it very clear that he was NOT trying to start any mess with his own Dad when TBC co-host, DJ Envy, asked if he was trying to start beef with his dad…

John David: “No, no, no, now see there you go, LOL. I just wanna bring awareness that Moms matter, Moms matter…LOL. It’s very important that I say that.”

So as y’all can see, we’re right back where we started in the beginning- which is, John David loves his pops, Denzel, to death. He’s just praising his talented mother, Pauletta, WAY more…that’s all.

John David is currently promoting his new film, The BlacKkKlansmen, which is based on a true story about a Black detective going undercover to infiltrate the criminal dealings of the KKK back in the day. If there’s one thing we love about Denzel Washington and his wife, Pauletta, is that they’ve managed to stay genuinely in love and keep their family in tact, in spite of the rapid Hollywood divorce rates that exist among their peers. After seeing what one of their 4 children, John David Washington, has just revealed about his moms, we love them even more now. Mrs. Washington apparently put actor, Donald Glover a.k.a. rapper Childish Gambino, in a headlock at a public event and it had us crackin’ up at the visual of it all.

In case y’all haven’t heard by now, Denzel’s son can act. He’s best known for his current role on the popular HBO series, “Ballers,” starring alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. At the present moment, John David is promoting his new film, “BlacKkKlansman.” It was during a recent promo stop to the “James Corden on The Late Late Show,” that he revealed what his moms did Donald Glover (see below video).

According to John, Pauletta got a wee-bit overzealous when she saw one of her favorite rappers at the Cannes Film Festival after-party. Her son’s film had just won the ‘Grand Jury Prize’ after debuting at Cannes and therefore, Mrs. Denzel was apparently overjoyed and slightly full of some feel good juice at that moment, as she celebrated with her son. Here’s what John David said happened next though:

“We’re at the after party. We’re feeling good after a standing ovation and all that, everybody’s loving the film, so we’re dancing, we’re on tables, we’re drinking, cheers-ing. Donald Glover comes in. … So I’m like, ‘Mom look, there’s Donald Glover.’ He just came off that big song he had, ‘This Is America.’

So she goes over there and started, like, chokeholding him [and saying] in his ear, ‘You knocked it out, boy.’ Just started stroking his fro ever so lightly, like this. And I try to break them up, like ‘I’m sorry Donald.’… He was cool about it. But I like literally tried to break them [apart], like, ‘Ma, stop, please.’ So my brother ended up taking her home because she was partying like a rock star.”

Well, you can’t knock Pauletta for being in fan-mode that evening, Childish Gambino’s “This Is America” has been like the hottest thing since sliced bread lately and understandably so. The brotha managed to create music with a purpose, in the midst of the unimpressive hot garbage that is largely classified as hip hop today.

So, like Pauletta Washington, we respect Donald Glover/Childish Gambino for staying in his lane and broadening the minds of the younger generation through his art. Although, I must admit that his name switch-a-roo can get a tad-bit confusing at times. Like…how do we know when to address him as Donald and when to be like, ‘Yo whadup Childish?’ Who knows? At any rate, it’s cool that Pauletta enjoys toastin’ it up with her son in celebration of his hard work. Speaking of John’s parents, it’s also pretty interesting to see his legendary pops, Denzel, rap the lyrics to a Cardi B. song.

I guess the Old School saying rings true, when it comes to Mr. and Mrs. Washington: “Age Ain’t Nuthin’ But A Number.” Well…not in the way Aaliyah and R. Kelly referred to in the 90’s…but in the hip-hop-meets-63-year-old-everlasting-love sorta way.

They’re Kids Got Serious Acting Skills

As most of us know, Denzel and his wife, Pauletta’s, son, John David Washington (34), has been KILLIN’ it on the hit HBO series, “Ballers,” which also stars Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. But what many may not know is that the Washingtons’ daughter, Olivia Washington (27), is also a helluva actress. She’s so talented, that even John David openly admitted, in his “Breakfast Club” interview, that Olivia is the better actress and that their Pops always tells her she’s going to earn an Oscar one day. He also jokingly stated that Denzel just tells him to keep grindin’, LOL.

What Denzel Schooled His Daughter On

Although Denzel knows his daughter has what it takes to dominate in Hollywood, he’s not one to turn a blind eye to unfortunate realities that exist within society and in entertainment. That’s why he kept it real with his daughter about how her beautiful chocolate skin could possibly hamper her career…if she doesn’t learn the game. In a roundtable interview a few years ago, with several other actors -including Matt Damon, Richard Gere, and Jamie Foxx- Denzel revealed exactly what he teaches his daughter to do regarding anything that could be viewed as a brainwashed ‘strike against her’ in Hollywood:

Washington (via The Hollywood Reporter): “I tell my daughter — she’s at NYU — I say, ‘You’re black, you’re a woman, and you’re dark-skinned at that. So you have to be a triple/quadruple threat.’ I said, ‘You gotta learn how to act. You gotta learn how to dance, sing, move onstage.’ That’s the only place, in my humble opinion, you really learn how to act. I said, ‘Look at Viola Davis. That’s who you want to be. Forget about the little pretty girls…if you’re relying on that, when you hit 40, you’re out the door. You better have some chops.'”

Props to Denzel for giving his gorgeous daughter tools that will only motivate her to push even harder at her craft.

Where You Can Watch Olivia Washington Do Her Thing

Olivia Washington is currently starring on USA Network’s TV drama, Mr. Robot. She’s also performing at the Chicago Shakesphere Theater in a play titled, ‘Taming of the Shrew,’ up until November 12, 2017. In the Instagram post above, her brother, John David, encouraged everyone to go check his lil’ sis’ out on the stage. Can’t wait to see what else Olivia has in store for us. Former Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan David Duke once told a Black undercover cop that a Black man could never infiltrate the hate group on his watch. But that’s exactly what retired Colorado Springs detective Ron Stallworth did from 1978-1979. He wrote about how he became a chapter leader in his 2014 book Black Klansman, and now Spike Lee and Get Out director Jordan Peele will tell his story on the silver screen.

With production set to begin in a few months, John David Washington (son of Denzel and Pauletta Washington) is said to be negotiating the starring role. Lee will direct while he and Peele will co-produce. The timing of the project might give one the impression that this was a recent undertaking, but Lee and Peele have been working on this movie for at least two years.

In Black Klansman, Stallworth recounts how he answered an ad in a Colorado Springs newspaper looking for new members of the White nationalist group. The ad simply read, “Ku Klux Klan: For information, call (phone number).” He called the number and spoke to a soldier in the Army stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado. Stallworth was able to convince him over the phone that he was White and a perfect fit for the expanding organization.

“I told him I was a pure Aryan, White man, which in and of itself is a joke,” Stallworth told NBC’s Dan Abrams. “But I said I was a pure Aryan, White-blooded American male, that I had been the victim of racial prejudice because of the dominance of Blacks, Jews, Mexicans, and other minorities, except I used the racial terms that they liked to use referring to those groups.”

From there, Stallworth sent a White friend who worked in the narcotics division in his place for all face-to-face meetings. He always used his real name, while allowing his fellow officer to use all of his credentials except those with photos of himself on them. Their teamwork led Stallworthy’s stand-in to be elected leader of the new chapter. He was also able to stop any cross-burnings from happening  in Colorado Springs for the entire year they were investigating.

The whole story will be told in the movie which will bear the same name as Stallworth’s book. With production on Black Klansman set to begin this fall, expect the pairing of Lee and Peele to make for some cinematic magic.
